John Adams on Lollapalooza Orchestra
The great Genius doesn't realize that his music largely comes from his unconscious self!
You won't like my comment if it refers to your nonexistent Concerto for Bass Drum, so I won't. You're probably too old.
Courte vidéo extrêmement intéressante... Merci beaucoup ! ; )
His comments (original language, please let me know if the text is wrong.) Hallelujah Junction is actually a location. It's a little truck stop on the California-Nevada border. And the first time I drove through there I was on a trip through the desert. I saw this sign that said welcome to Hallelujah Junction and I thought that is a great title waiting for a piece. I'm attracted to the sound of two pianos because I can write very similar material but interlock them slightly out of phase, so it creates a kind of acoustical version of a digital delay, and the music has its own resonance that only can happen when you have two instruments playing almost the exact same material. What's fun about Hallelujah Junction for me and what was fun about composing it was using the sense of pulsation that one can get by having two pianos working at the same tempo with the same material and tossing back little motivic ideas back and forth. And then riffing, you know, one piano will stay down a little while another one goes up high and jabbing back and forth, so that, you know, the moments where they're kind of dueling like Dueling Banjos, only in this case, it's dueling pianos. I used the word hallelujah as a stimulus for melodic material. Actually hallelujah, it's a Hebrew word, I'm sure, its roots are probably in pronunciation, it's very different and alien from the way we use it but it still signifies a sense of joy, a sense of praise. And I start to work without the "HA", it starts with "llelujah, llelujah" and that idea is repeated on and then eventually it gains the first "H-A" and becomes "hallelujah, hallelujah". So it's a interesting case of a kind of musical onomatopoeia where we take a word and use the rhythm and the inflection of the word to generate musical material.
Grateful for the upload. Love the composer and this piece specifically, so it's great to hear him talking about it.
Yep it's a great piece 🎉
I saw this performed live in Vancouver, BC last week and was impressed by the uniqueness and intensity of the beat. Cordialements to you, John Adams and anybody who attempts to play it!! Thank you!
Got to see this a lot in the summer of 1991 when The Cadets opened their show with it.
After "Call Me by Your Name", I love this even more ;)
wait does this piece have something to do with call me by your name??
@@aIewishus it’s in the opening credits of the movie, so it’s everyone’s first impression with of the film.
2nd movement, makes me feel deeply nostalgic but I love it! I love how it make me feel! (I’m not depress) a master peace
Not enough of John's wonderful music seems to be heard in the UK.
This is Astronaut music, fighter pilot stuff, fast moving, powerful locomotive. The shuttle launching to orbit, music that celebrates the triumph of Man over his faults and failures. But then we also have Beethoven's 9th for that also. Heehee
I guess . . . 🤨
Just listened to this after CD collecting dust for some years. Love it . Minimalist, but with interesting surprises all the way.
Amazing work!
This is poetic genius masked as musical genius. Do you understand how artistically refined this work is?
ABOLUTELY BRILLIANT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
His voice is so ASMR
When I first heard the Tuba section, OMG, my jaw dropped flat.
The first 2:30 of the piece of really one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever heard
jerry goldsmith inspired john adams. who would have thought
Hi Mr Adams, here is my version of "short ride in fast a machine" music and video. Let me know what you think - ua-cam.com/video/T58Re4sm0yg/v-deo.html
2:15 Is that an electric violin?
Yes. That is for another one of his violin concertos, the dharma at Big Sur, for 6 stringed electric violin
@@codascheuer8426 awesome, thank you!
Onomatopoeia (Pronounced "AH-nuh-MA-tuh-PEE-uh")
😊
What's about the dedicatee Sir Simon Rattles? May we know why he was given that honor?
He probably commissioned / premiered the piece
Fascinating piece. However, the word sounds just like it's pronounced: הללויה, read right to left. Hallel=praise, U=to, Yah=God.
@peterg5383 Its a response to Adams' remark at 2:00 that the Hebrew roots of the word are probably pronounced very different to ours.
He's a god damn genius!
Brilliant ,,,,,
