Importance of Finding Your Own Editing Style | Landscape Photography
I like the colours before sunrise to but I tend to be too late to have the right compositions ready.. Nice video 👍🙂
Thank you. Morning blue hour is always a little easier in winter, as long as you can get out of bed in the cold 😅 and I generally go to locations maximum 45 minutes from home and locations I know well, so less planning on the compositions. I also do far less "traditional" landscape photography now, so not many early mornings needed. 😉
Beautiful colour tones on those shots across the water. It looked so peaceful.
Thank you, blue hour photography is a lot easier on the alarm clock in winter ;)
Nice video 👍🏼 I'm also more of a fan of sunrise conditions.
Thank you. I also prefer it because it's much quieter when you're out in nature.
After two L5,S1 surgeries and being gored along my spine by an upset 1860lb bull....I'm pretty limited on a good day.....but cold days 😅. NOPE Enjoying watching you walk around in that white stuff though
All of that sounds really bad, I can't imagine what that must be like. I'm glad you enjoyed watching me out in the snow, and I appreciate your comment. 👍🏼
The b&w image at 6:45 is great.
Thanks Alex 👍🏼
I’m glad that you found a pair of gloves that you like. I just don’t like gloves, so I probably wouldn’t be happy with any of them. A little too chilly for me these days. For outdoor photography that is. It’s supposed to be -0 Fahrenheit for the next few days. Maybe I will dig out a macro lens and play around in the house.
Wow, that is cold! (I'm so used to Centigrade now that I had to think again in Fahrenheit), so I can fully understand that, it's not so much fun when it gets that cold, even when wearing multiple layers. If the sun isn't out then even worse. Macro indoor photography sounds like a great idea 👍🏻
Another interesting video and I really like the b&w photos of the trees.
Thank you 👍🏻 Doing some b&w snow photography was something on my wishlist this year. Hopefully I'll get more snow this winter.
Thanks for the tips, always good to get a different perspective on things 👍🏼
My pleasure, glad you found the video helpful.
Mark thank you - these are all tips I have not heard before in the endless tip videos that are on youtube- very nice! Also since you asked, as it's very subjective and maybe depends on the other photos in the set - but I really liked the shot of the red ceiling with the lights - something about the tint of the colors and they yellowing line running in an interesting framing! Curious what yours is of the two.
Thank you, it's nice to know I'm giving a different perspective on the "tips" videos. My favourite is the same as yours, that was my original edit before I experimented with the other option.
Nice video as always and thanks for the tips, I always struggle to get out in these conditions.
Thank you very much and my pleasure 😃
There are quite a few man-made objects on the Moon!! 😁 Seriously, an interesting video. A photographer called Alfred Stieglitz did a series of photographs from 1925 - 34 of the sky called "Equivalents". Mind you, in those days he didn't have any problems with con-trails.
Plus Elvis is up there 🤣. Thanks, I'll be sure to check out the photographer you mentioned, sounds interesting.
I’ve never really been one for “projects” but anything that can motivate or make you think about your photography has to be a great help.
For sure, I still meet so many former photographers who quit because they lacked motivation.
Thank you, Mark. Your videos are quite insightful. Keep them coming!
Thanks for your support Christine, I'm happy you enjoy them. I'll continue to try my best and cover different topics.
This is a really interesting video , thanks for sharing 👍🏼
Thank you 😃
Nice video Mark, like the way how you document the environment
Thank you very much :)
Thank you
My pleasure :)
Great video, thanks! Love the photos!❤️
Thank you very much 😊
Great video thank you 🙏
Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed it 😊
It’s not Sunday morning, just saying.
Yes, I hit "publish" by mistake instead of "schedule" 🙄 Although this is the time of the year when I forget which day it is! 😅
@ I’m retired so it doesn’t matter what day it is.
I really like your everyday photos, I think they have more meaning than just standard landscape photography.
Thank you 👍🏻
Interesting video, I like that you challenge the norms here and offer a different perspective.
Thanks, I've been trying to do that recently with some of my videos. Although some people get upset by that 😅
Changing things up and experimenting is always a good idea. I would add take multiple shots of your subject from as many angles as possible.
Yes, that's a great suggestion.
Lots of good advice here, Mark. I really appreciated your POV. I love mixing it up. It's a great reminder. I did a TON of zoom, and now I'm back to using a prime (just one at a time) and trying to make it work. Guess when I've done that a while, I should go back to a zoom. B&W, I use it the way you said. But maybe I'll do a whole project where I do B&W only. I do love Daidō Moriyama, and would love to do a (bad) tribute project in that style.
Thanks Chris. Your idea about a B&W project sounds like a great idea. I've just started doing project photography too. I'm hoping for snow where I live because I really want to do B&W with snowy conditions this winter.
Great video and good advice, I get stuck taking the same type of photos. I should try something new for 2025 👍🏻
Thank you as always for your comments, I really appreciate it.
very good !
Thank you
Bad light is a contributor to boring colour, and if an image has boring colour then B&W or selective desaturation can be a way forward. I immediately wondered what your chicken coop photo at the end would look like with no green or with only the chickens in colour!
Yes, there are many options for flat light, as always it's a question of personal preferences.
I haven't tried them myself, but Valleret make gloves, some touch-screen-capable gloves, and also some models where you can pop your index finger and thumb out by "flipping the top back" sort of. No affiliation. Just might be worth at least checking out.
Thanks for the suggestion on the gloves, a few others have also suggested this brand. I definitely think the flip back option is best.
Check out “ice fishing” gloves. They are dirt cheap and work really well. Two fingers exposed, rubberized grip and usually waterproof. I figure if they work for ice fishing they should do well with my Leica!
Thanks for the tip, I'll check them out 👍🏻
Great video, thanks for the inspiration to get out and shoot in any conditions! Have you ever used Vallerret gloves or do you know anything about them? I recently learned about them and was thinking of buying one of their warmer pairs
Thank you. Regarding the gloves, you're the second person to recommend this brand to me, so clearly they are good. I've actually just ordered a mit style wool glove, where it flips to fingerless. I'll see how they work out, if not then I'll look at Vallerret.
A very interesting video Mark and one that resonated with me. I only started photography a couple of years ago and very quickly got sucked into the dopamine hit that comes with social media likes when your photos start to improve. I quickly realised that often the photos that get the most likes are not all that appealing to me personally and I’m much more drawn to more unique things or interesting scenes that make me ask lots of questions. Your mindset sounds spot on and you should always do what makes you most happy and keeps you taking the camera out.
Thanks Anthony. I had the same reaction when I looked back at the photos I used to post on social media, none of which I have printed which tells me everything about those photos. Let's stay true to ourselves.
Outdoor photography in the southern UK offers little all year round. So few days of good light, whatever the season.
I know this well, I used to live in Kent before leaving the UK, I didn't do photography in those days, but still remember little variance in light.
@@markhampshirephotography Yep. Much as I like landscape I don't tend to shoot it very often, due to the perpetually flat light. Portraits are easier to shoot any day. The flat light can work in your favour, as long as you have some idea where to position your subject, and there's always artificial lighting. I just got tired of wasting days standing in front of promising vistas or scenes but with the worst light possible, contrary to the ever-changing forecast. I don't have the time for that!
Flat light days do present a nice challenge. Definitely gives you a chance to try and be more creative . As for gloves, I use the Vallarret ones which allow you to get quick access to your finger and thumb for taking photos. Still not a perfect solution though unfortunately!
Definitely. I've just ordered some wool mitts, those that flip out to reveal fingerless gloves, so I'll see how that works.
Nice and different ideas. Give me new ideas!!
Thanks 👍🏻
@markhampshirephotography 🙂👍
Hey Mark, great video. Here to recommended a good pair of gloves for ya. I use the Outdoor Research 'Lost Coast' gloves for my winter photography. They are mits that flip into fingerless gloves when you need the camera. I highly recommend them as they're very warm when you need them to be and very free flowing when you require it as well. Check em out :)
Thanks and thank you also for your glove suggestion. You've reinforced my thinking that the "mits that flip" are the best solution. I'll be sure to check them out 👍🏻 Then all I'll need is snow 😅
Hello Mark, This is a very interesting topic and I am currently working on it. Without being as extreme as you are, I am starting to use manual focus and find it very usefull to choose what will be sharp and what will not. I discovered that it is an excellent tool to isolate a subject in a cluttered environment. Thank you for the idea on blurring faces because it is indeed a problem in France. Blurring the subject seemed like a bad idea to me at first but looking at your photos I tell myself that it forces the reader to make an effort and finally to look more carefully at the image. After watching two of your videos and looking at the titles of the old ones, I chose to subscribe to your channel because I find your topics relevant. Bruno
Hi Bruno, firstly thank you for commenting and subscribing. It's great that you are experimenting with blurring the images, I try with my channel to give other photographers ideas to try, so it's nice to hear someone trying something new. Good to know that France also has this rule about faces, I'll be sure to remember this if I ever come to France for photography. Have a great day. Mark
Actually I don’t mind gray days, any day is good in my book. My goal is to try to take photos in every condition that I can. You just might get a once in a lifetime chance at a particular shot. Practice in all weather conditions may give you an advantage, but that’s just me. As for gloves good luck! I just don’t like gloves. If it’s really cold I have gloves on and off most of the time. I do keep hand warmers in my coat pockets.
Absolutely, you have to be there to get the chance. I've just ordered some new gloves for colder weather, they are more mitten type, so you can flip back the mitten part and they turn into fingerless gloves, so I'll be using my fingers on one hand, I'm hoping this is a good solution, plus they are wool.
In such scenario, carry two things with you. a small warm light such as torch or apurture light or anyting or use your phone torch light to lit the things and photograph those. Often I encounter a scene without any movement, no wind or nothing absolutely still. I carry a small fan which can be powered through powerbank. I place the fan besides the grass and turn on. I have motion for my videos which look natural and better I can control it well. One sub from me and huge respect for you.
Thanks for the sub 👍🏻 Sounds like a good idea for your videos. Also for close ups in photography. On the rare occasion that I photograph mushrooms, I use the torch on my phone to light them.
Some nice photo ideas here, including the woodland shots towards the end. I generally stay at home on gray cloudy days, but I'll give it a try. I have the same problem with gloves!
Thank you, I know many people struggle for ideas in winter with flat grey skies. I think I may just put two pairs of gloves on when it gets colder.
I don't have or want any editing software - love anything new and artistic to attempt. Thanks for the video! Certainly up for this.
Thanks 👍🏻. I'm sure you'll have fun trying this out and experimenting.
I'm doing this kind of Intentional Blur photography, using sometimes keeping ON the "macro option" of the lens or i fix focus on close but shoot far and vice versa. Most of the time wide open, sometimes f8 or higher. Wide open ives me better results in bokeh, obviously. Everything manual. I shoot in color, raw; I change them if necessary in post processing. Breaking all the rules.
That's great. Our cameras have so many possibilities, so it's good to explore more creative approaches 👍🏻
The blurred photos have an artist's feel to them, like sketches. Or perhaps they are part of a dream, where the fine details are lost, but the overall story is there.
Yes, I think these are both really interesting interpretations of this type of photography 👍🏻
I really like the results -- it's very refreshing to let go of perfection.
Thank you. I think it's good to challenge the norms and try new creative things.
The images had a lovely retro feel to them. I agree doing this in camera is always going to be better than in post production as you have more control and I imagine it looks more 'real'
I agree, and definitely a retro vibe to the photos, especially with the grain I added in Lightroom. It was fun to do something different.
My first thought was kinda a Holga look to your photos. Always fun to experiment.
I had to look up Holga, looks like it was a fun camera. I enjoy exploring the more artistic side of photography.
@ you can buy just a Holga lens. I’m not sure in what mounts but you can get one in f-mount. It’s very cheap and cheap to adapt to mirrorless. Not the same look as film but still fun.
I didn't realise that, out of curiosity I just checked it out, looks quirky.
@ it’s not for everyone.
Nice idea 👍🏻 Thanks for giving me some inspiration to try something different.
Thank you. The biggest reason for my channel is to try and offer some ideas.
Hi Mark! Thank you for the video and good luck with your channel! A few tips for you, that will improve your video quality. Watch a few videos or read about “Key light” (Rembrandt triangle) and “motivated light”.
Thank you. Yes, this video is not the best lit, I rarely make videos at home. But I've already made a second and improved the lighting (with the minimal resources I have). But thanks for the tips.
Thanks for this video! Great video, great shots
Thank you 👍🏻
Found the video very interesting and the photos are creative and with good variety.
Thank you 👍🏻
Sometimes it takes guts to follow your own path but in the end I think it’s more rewarding.
I think you're absolutely right David.
@@markhampshirephotography now all that I have to do is find my own path. 😉
Very interesting 👍🙂
Thank you 👍🏻
Hi Mark, thanks for posting. Sorry this is somewhat negative but not personal. After a couple of minutes I switched-off, so missed possible good photo items. Well, I suppose it is personal - but to me. Thing is that I am hyper-allergic to self-improvement / psychology topics. Probably my up-bringing - they set me on edge. Instead, I switched to Kim Grant's video (on ice photography) which was also posted this morning. Now, this is ironic because, after years of watching her YT photo channel, I had almost stopped precisely because of her latter focus on (what I think of as) psycho-babble. By the way, if anyone isn't me, her channel on landscape photography in Scotland is, otherwise, excellent. (YT channel: Kim Grant). This morning she squarely focused on photography - hurrah! Apropos your first point (which I did see) - be prepared not to be liked... well, as an retired teacher, that is an important mantra. I knew of a new teacher going into class, wanting to be liked; the pupils bestowed a near-nervous-breakdown upon him within a couple of months; he left the profession. Sir Paul McCartney said he (and The Beatles) wrote for him / themselves, not for others - that is the way to success of some sort. Maybe not quite Globe-conquering mega-success but, at least, not failure. I'll be back for your next video. All the best. Cheers.
Thanks for your feedback. I know that this video is not for everyone and I'm sure that others will share your viewpoint.. That's ok, I have zero problem with that, otherwise I'd be a hypocrite given the topic of the video. I definitely don't take it personally, everything is a game of opinions. Plus you expressed your viewpoint politely. UA-cam is after all for conversations and different ideas and topics, and you are free to watch what you like and switch off what you don't like. My focus will continue to be on photography, never gear, but sometimes it's good to do something different. P.s. I'm sure Kim will be grateful for the channel recommendation!
I enjoyed this, as well as other previous videos. Please keep true to yourself, not the algorithms. There is an audience for low key, thoughtful videos. You may never get tens of thousands of subscribers, but the audience you do acquire will be true followers.
@billgreen1140 Thank you, I'll certainly continue to avoid falling into the algorithm trap that's for sure. I like the community feel of UA-cam and I'll continue to mix my content to cover many topics/ideas. I appreciate your support.
