    I'd check to see if chlorine or chloramine is used by your water company. If chlorine, I'd simply stir as I heat the water to strike temperature - as gases are less soluble at higher temperatures, the majority of the chlorine will be lost. If there is chloramine in the water, Campden tablets are the way to go. Oh, and complain to your water company.

      Hi thx for your comment and you are right but as we are talking about kit brewing and I doubt many ppl will ask there water company for a detailed water report its always best to treat the water as I'm sure ur aware. Thx again and stay safe

    I don't have a spare fermenting bucket. Can I just crush a tablet in 3 litres of hot water and add to my brew when topping up to the 23L mark? Also: for 23L = 5 gallons so I would use 1 whole Camden tablet, right?

      @@40pints52 Thank you. I think I figured out a way, I'll treat the 20L of tap water in the fermenting bucket, then decant that into sanitised 5L water bottles. Start my brew in the fermenter, then add back in the treated water.

    Would this be ok to mix with a can of muntons oat extract to make a hazy brew? Or maybe more economical to just go with 2 muntons cans, one extra light and one oat (plus a nice shedload of hops).

    Haven't tried this but i did make the mj pinacolager with the pure malt enhancer and it was a cracking drink. First cpl bottles tasted bit malty but after just 2 weeks it was superb. Agree with you on using malt instead of sugar/dextrose, it's a much cleaner drink and loses the slightly alcoholic smell/taste that i notice when using dextrose. Worth spending that lil bit more for final quality.

      Thx for your comment m8 . This used to be my favourite tipple but fortunately I found dark rock brewing and in my opinion they make the best kits out there . Thx for watching and enjoy ur next brew 😄 stay safe m8

    great video! I've been finding this kit at a great price lately so been brewing it often, pretty much exactly as you did here with a dry brew enhancer. Not bad stuff eh? I find it never clears , even after months in the bottles but I enoy the slight nuttiness and it's a nice change from the coopers! Cheers!

    • @40pints52
      @40pints52 Рік тому

      Thx m8 glad it helped you and also really appreciate your kind comment. Yh its not a bad drop but if your having trouble clearing it I advise to cold crash it in a homemade fermentation chamber made out of a fridge or freezer. Also don't be greedy when it comes to bottling. Always leave a bit at the bottom and try not to agitate the trub. Try dark rock kits from dark rock brewing. Easily the best kits on the market. They taste lush 😋. Thx again and stay safe m8 happy Xmas too

    Good useful tips, I've probably made every mistake listed (although many yrs ago) and have learnt a lot since returning to brewing recently. One question i have though is regarding brewing sugar or just sugar, when a company releases a premium kit containing say 2.4kg of malt extract (hopped or otherwise) why are we then encouraged to add 1kg of sugar fermentable, or perhaps an additional 1.2 kg of pure extract. Is the 2.4 kg of supplied extract not enough for the kit to fully ferment? Would it not be better marketing to supply the extra malt in such a kit or is aimed at keeping cost low? Sorry for a noobie question but having returned to brewing the choices to me are so vast and I just want the best method without making endless so-so brews.

    • @40pints52
      @40pints52 Рік тому

      Thx for watching and your comment. You do pose a very good question and my guess is cost .the cheaper kits usually come with 1.7kg hopped extract but do require extra fermentables to achieve the desired abv . I also reckon it to be because everyone will want to use a different fermentable . The premium kits will include 3kg hopped extract and these require no extra fermentables just dextrose for priming. My advice never use brewing sugar alone. It will give u a thinner beer plus increase your chances of getting homebrew twang. Always use lme or dme . If you live in England check out dark rock brewing company. They do there own kits as well as the usual coopers etc but there own kits are superb and I highly recommend them . They even do part grain kits which I advise ppl to do and even all grain kits but you'll need to spend a bit more money on equipment for them . You can brew kits without extra fermentables but you will get a very low alcohol beer . Happy brewing and stay safe m8 :)

    • @billybass4189
      @billybass4189 Рік тому

      @@40pints52 cheers for that, I used 500g of dme in my last brew along with the brewing sugar and it's perfectly drinkable but has that slight twang, I'll use bottled water next time and possibly treat it with pure brew plus avoid dextrose and go with lme.

    • @40pints52
      @40pints52 Рік тому

      Sounds a plan m8 . Basically you made your own beer enhancer 😁 . Lme is good but you may find your beer being a tad sweet but you may like it . Dme also has the advantages of being able to store longer. Dark Rock do supply there own beer enhancers with there kits but there kits include a lot of hops so I guess that can mask the twang but ive never even tasted a hint of twang from them . I ise pure brew but only because they supply it with there kits . Its obviously cheaper to use tap water n treated with campden tablets. I mainly do extract brews now and the occasional kits .wanna do all grain but they do take alot longer and there's only so many hrs in the day lol . Just enjoying a West Coast apa atm . Very nice 😉

    • @billybass4189
      @billybass4189 Рік тому

      @@40pints52 well the dme i added was muntons hopped light plus i chucked in 50g of cascade pellets and 50g of mosaic, I've tried about 3 bottles now over last 3 weeks and it's clear and tasting better every time. As i said, just a slight twang, I'm happy doing extract kits for the moment but considering biab for the future, i don't have the space for tons of equipment so will try to keep things simple as possible.

    Thanks for the informative vid there... very helpful. The two things I'm not sure about though is where does the chloramine go? (I used to just let my water gas-off for 24hrs back before Welsh Water started adding chloramine instead)... and secondly, is the water then used with the dissloved tablet still in there in solution? (I know 20l is heaps so the concentration is really low and clearly doesn't cause issues (else it wouldn't be used)... just thought I'd check) Thanks again

    • @40pints52

      Soz just found ur msg .thx for your comment btw , to answer ur first question Adding half a Campden tablet for every 5 gallons or 20 litres of water will remove chlorine or chloramine present. The potassium metabisulfite reacts with the chlorine to break it down into chloride, sulfate, and ammonia which are not going to add undesirable flavour compounds to your home brew and in some cases are beneficial. And to answer your second question yes you do lol . Hope this helps and happy brewing:) stay safe

    Thanks for that! 😊👍🏻 How about underpitching yeast? I started homebrewing about 7 months ago and had a few early shockers using the single pack of dried yeast supplied with the kits and even when I used branded yeast for the style. Then I read about how too often beginners underpitch yeast so I started experimenting with creating a yeast starter 24 hours before brew day using 2 packets of yeast and some LDME and the results have been a revelation!

    Good thing I remember hearing when I was younger that British people call a flashlight a "torch" or otherwise I would've been a little confused. I would be saying: "Why on Earth would you use a blowtorch or even a stick of fire to look at a thermometer when you could just use a flashlight?" Lol. Nevertheless, this was helpful.

      No problem. The video was simple, easy to follow and strait to the point, which I like. I was searching up how to read a thermometer strip since I am attempting to make kombucha for the second time ever. I'm hoping it goes well this time now that I've become more educated. This video certainly helped so I knew when to add the scoby and starter tea. P.s. Have you ever thought about making kombucha videos? That's a whole 'nother world, right there. It's a very healthy drink with a wide range of flavors with either more alcohol or less alcohol depending how you make it. Just a suggestion and I'd probably watch those. Many people brew kombucha a little differently and so there can be many different outcomes...

      Oh man, then you are missing out! You've gotta try it! Kombucha is life for me. Can't live without it after having tried it. It's a healthy drink that can replace soda and also act as an energy drink. If you've never heard of it before, then you may be surprised to hear that it's a billion dollar industry. But really, you can make your own much cheaper at home. It is typically fermented, sweetened black tea. It becomes a healthy drink at the end of the process. If you're interested, these 2 videos are an excellent place to start: ua-cam.com/video/23P7QqsjEMw/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/iP1L_u4kiNE/v-deo.html The second video's channel you may find inspirational for helping grow your channel with it's presentation. It will also go over more details of brewing kombucha. It's definitely a world you will want to explore, I promise! Thanks for the well wishes and you're welcome! Keep up the good work with your videos. Having helpful videos on UA-cam is invaluable for many people, so thank you!

      Hi m8 and thx for watching. Really appreciate your kind comment means alot 😁 . My best advice is to buy a second hand fridge cheap and turn it into a fermentation chamber. That way you can manage the fermentation temperatures and have spot on brews. You'll then be able to brew any style of brews you want including true lagers. It might set you back a few bob m8 but its totally worth it and you'll claw back the money from what you save on all the commercial beer you would of bought 😉 . Check out my how to make a fermentation chamber video. Its so easy to do. Just make sure you measure up your equipment first to make sure it fits in your fridge. Get back to me n ill recommend some good kits when youve built it You wont regret making it m8 😁

      Lol you'll do fine. Brewed that many times. Not bad. Just remember the kit contains a true lager yeast and for best results ferment 13-15c .will take around 3 weeks at these temps. I'll look into that. I've tried a few wilkos kit n not bad but not to keen on brewing with sugar as this will more than likely lead to a thinner albeit stronger brew also you risk the dreaded twang lol. I'd use lme or dme for better results. I've done the bulldog Mexican gold cerveza which wasn't bad. Mangrove jacks deffo make some cracking pints. Will be trying muntons gold at some point.
