Creating an Ocean Sunset Painting: The Struggle to Find the Perfect Color Palette
Painting name: Goodnight, San Diego
Painting size: 20” x 40” x 1.5”
Oil on cotton canvas
This painting took me around 40 hours to complete. If I were to do it again, it would likely take less time since I experimented a lot with different color palette combinations the first time. I enjoy testing things out, and I ended up with a limited palette that I really liked, including Hansa Yellow Medium, Cadmium Orange, Quinacridone Magenta, Cobalt Teal, Ultramarine Blue, and White.
Looking back at the painting, I think it turned out pretty well. The ocean might need a bit more work, but overall, I’m happy with how it looks, even though it doesn’t closely match the reference photos. It has its own character and stands well on its own. I’m very happy with this piece!
About me:
As a self-taught artist, I’ve always loved drawing, especially with pencils during my younger years and in high school. However, life pulled me away from art, and for years, I longed to return but didn’t know where to start. In July 2023, I decided to invest in high-quality colored pencils and paper, hoping small drawings would bring comfort during challenging times. That decision reignited my passion for painting. By February 2024, I began oil painting with little knowledge of techniques or the medium. Since then, I’ve mainly focused on landscapes and animals. While I still have plenty to learn, I’m proud of the progress I’ve made.

Hey Chau, I still remember watching your videos for the first time about 8 months ago! I used to watch Nhat's streams u used paint in split screen...
