Brake Break in
This one is about brake discs. I think I say that a few times during this video.
With the MOT fast approaching, I finally get off my backside, stop procrastinating etc. and get the new brake discs fitted to Babe. Along with new pads, naturally.
I take a couple of laps around my local 'loop' to check the operation of the new pads/discs and start the bedding in process.
Why did it take me so long? Not sure, really. Maybe I was holding on to some forlorn hope that the EBC discs would come good with more use. Didn't happen.

How much!?!? Another 'unique' motovlog?

The second video in my 'weird/strange/odd' motovlog series. Well, I say series - since the first one was nearly a year ago calling it a series is probably a bit of a stretch. I ride and talk (more like grumble) about a part I am collecting for my car. All while saying the phrase 'glow plug' a lot more than any sane, rational person would say in 19 minutes. Since I recorded and edited this video, I have found a potential solution. Once I have the item and it is fitted, I will make a follow-up video - hopefully with much improved audio.

    If it was me I'd make two videos and upload them..... (I hate throwing things away🙂) Thank Heavens for suppliers like Euro Car Parts, I wonder what the dealer price was? Did you check? It's funny how we 'justify' spending money on cars/bikes 🤣 My car tax will be £345 next year 😢 (Just dodged the bullet this year) (I justify it by the fact I've owned it since 2004 and apart from a ABS pump and a bit of bodywork repair it's cost me nothing but 'consumable parts, tyres, exhausts, batteries etc) 👍 Next year will be the last MOT on the bike....it will be MOT (& Road Tax) exempt after that. 👍

      To be honest, Paul, I didn't bother with the Vauxhall dealer. I've not had much luck with them in the past as far as parts costs go. The part I got from ECP is BERU, which is the same as was installed in the car. I do tend to shop around though. A couple of years ago, I was in the market for a new battery for the Insignia - the stop/start system wasn't working and it looked like the battery in the car was the factory original. That would have made it over 11 years old and over 90k miles, not to say how many stop/start cycles. I can't remember the prices now, but Tayna Batteries was significantly cheaper than ECP for the same Bosch S5 AGM battery (Tayna did have a discount running to be fair. IIRC the Vauxhall battery was far and away more expensive. If I'd still had my Vectra I think the tax for that would be £345 this year. Nice to only have to pay £35 for the Insignia :). Cost me almost 3 times that for the bike! What are the conditions for exemption on the bike? Babe is now 30 years old, 26 of those in my ownership.

      Hi CB, thanks for that. The only concern I have about using the camera mic is that the camera only has one port that it uses for charging or connecting the mic/speaker adapter, not both. So if I want to go for an extended trip and need to run the camera on an external power pack, I won't be able to use the mic. I will have to experiment with a lavalier mic as a temporary setup in my crash helmet connected to my phone in my jacket pocket, for those sorts of occasions. Yep, the Avons get a thumbs up from me :) - I think I said that already! Tyre choice is often a bit of a gamble, what someone recommends as the best tyre ever, someone else might hate with a passion. Glad the Avons worked for me.

    I dropped my first helmet and binned it. It was quite a cheap helmet and I generally don't spend a huge amount on them. I do check the SHARP ratings though. If I was spending £500-600 on a helmet and dropped it I would think differently. I wouldn't use it immediately but I would send it off to be scanned and checked. I go with the five year change duration. I'm sure that they could probably go a little longer but, as you say, why take the risk? Hi Gordon, tyres are doing well. I am starting to think the 'twitchiness' I'm getting with the new tyres is due to the old tyres being so worn and unresponsive for so long that I had forgotten how responsive decent tyres are. Not sure if I said but had new fork seals and chain and sprockets on my old girl...not cheap as I haven't got the skills....🙁 Heavy downpours by us, so no shakedown rides for me. Didn't realize you'd had Babe for that long. The last few years I've always seemed to be replacing a bulb at MOT time after it's been laid up for the winter. This year it was the headlamp bulb which is a bit of a pain as I have an aftermarket headlamp fairing that had to be removed, and it was a Bank Holiday! Babe definitely sounds like a female name to me...just sayin... Hope 'it' went through the MOT OK...even though you know it should pass, it's always a tense time.

Looks like it will be staying on Bridgestones - not that I have any issue with them, just wanted to give the Avon Spirits a try... I remember an MOT a few years ago, the test was under way and they were just going through the lights. Literally at that exact moment, one of the tail lights went out. Luckily there are 2 so the tester said it isn't a fail. Phew. People sometimes think the bike's name is something to do with a talking piglet. Nope :). Interesting you should mention Avons, they do a fitment for my bike, and the mechanic who did my fork seals was saying how he rated Avons. I have Bridgestone B45's I'm not a fan if I'm honest. Looks like Babe is good to go! Have to say if I had a battery that lasted 7 years I'd buy it again in a heartbeat! My original Honda battery lasted years with zero maintenance (I didn't know any better in 1985) When it came time to change it I went with Yuasa...I had a couple and wasn't impressed to be honest. I ordered an original fitment from Dave Siver Spares, it's a GP Battery, I do look after it much better now and I'm happy for now. I like to keep my bike original, one of my biggest regrets was getting a two into one Micron system and not paying 3 x the price to get the Honda silencers...even though they rusted from the inside out terribly. What happened about 'the engine problem' she sounds fine to me.....?? (As I've said before)

    • @mightybeanstick9872
      @mightybeanstick9872 Рік тому

      I tried to find another battery like the one that had just failed, but it didn't have any brand information on it, and I couldn't find any record of when I bought it. I've known about Motobatt for some years now and have seen some YT motovloggers put them in their bikes so thought it would be worth a go. Working REALLY well so far :). Before I got the last AGM battery I went through 3 Yuasa 'wet' batteries in about 2 years so I won't have those any more. The engine problem is a noise at idle when the engine is hot. It's done it for many years, and seems to emanate from the alternator/starter drive area. These bikes were known to break the alternator drive bolt on occasion (so much so that Triumph made an 'upgrade' bolt available), but I've checked mine as far as I am able, I don't think it's that. When the engine is running at speed above idle it's fine. My interest in the Delkevic silencers is partly due to wanting to preserve the Triumph silencers currently on it. I had to replace the right silencer a couple of years ago as it had rotted out, and was able to find a NOS Triumph silencer on Ebay. But they're getting scarcer and more expensive so I wanted to put mine away and use something less 'valuable'. But it's not a priority - yet... Originality is something I try to maintain also, as much as possible, but I also bear in mind that sometimes there isn't an option but to get something aftermarket as long as it is 'in keeping' with the style of the bike.

    • @paullee6663

      @@mightybeanstick9872 I've heard mixed reports on Motobatt to be honest. Generally speaking I don't like to 'update' the technology of any part I fit unless I have to. Thankfully, Dave Silver Spares still keeps the OEM fitment for my battery so that's what I went with. Completely agree Yuasa is not for me either. Despite the hype. I had a similar experience to you. Very little OE stuff is available for my bike now although thankfully I've been able to get the OE oil filter....(I'm considering buying a 'stock' just in case, in fact typing this I think I will as I'm old and I probably won't need many 🤣) Strangely, Honda stopped making the air filter for years, but I see Dave Silver is showing them as available this year? You probably already know this but.... Esso Premium fuel is methanol free for the vast majority of the UK. My old thing seems to run much better on it than the old E5 supermarket fuel I used to use pre E10. Problem with older bikes is everything 'ages together' so you end up doing 3 or 4 jobs at a time instead of 1. Had to have new fork seals fitted recently, and changed the chain and sprockets. I haven't got the skills so that wasn't cheap! I did tyres last year and front indicator brackets that I had to get 3D printed in Nylon....as well as the normal oil & filters...

      Hi Paul, and thanks! Funny you should mention going to a local engineering shop/machine shop. It reminded me that I actually did just that! I had forgotten all about that. To be accurate, I TRIED to go to one just a 5 minute walk from me. I had been there some years back to enquire about getting the pivot bushing in the gear lever pressed out and a new one pressed in as I felt there was too much lateral play in the lever. They were honest with me and said the bushing wasn't particularly worn and recommended I put a shim/washer behind the pivot to take up the slack. Worked like a charm. So I went to ask them about the pistons but, unfortunately they had closed up. I tried a couple of other places a bit further afield with no joy. This was at the beginning of the Covid panic, to be fair. So I just decided to try and find my own solution, and continue using the original (OEM) pistons as they were still ok - but they aren't ok now, hence the relief at finding the mini chuck. Hope all is well with you and yours.

    Amazing how many people open their car doors, sometimes even flinging them wide open without looking. I grew up with the 'lifesaver' over the shoulder since I was about 11 doing the Cycling Proficiency Test and later on motorbikes, as it was a definite 'Fail' if you missed one! Do they still do that today on bike tests? Only recently discovered the changes in the Highway Code, I think I better check again, if it's changed that much. All I could really find was 'Give Way' to 'squishy things' 🤣 How to upset everyone that lives in 'seedy' Bognor Regis 😆 Everywhere looks better when the sun's out!

      Strangely enough, in the nearly 50 years I have been riding/driving, I have never witnessed anyone open their door in front of other traffic. I have seen a couple of videos online of people opening their door in front of passing cars, with the inevitable result, so yes, it happens. I have also read somewhere that the Dutch Reach rule also applies to passengers. How the rear seat passengers are supposed to check mirrors before opening the door I don't know. Lifesavers/shoulder checks are definitely part of advanced training/assessment, but as I passed my bike test nearly half a century ago when all you had to do was not fall off or run over the examiner during the emergency stop (just kidding) I'm not sure what current day instruction and testing does. As for those 'squishy things', which does include you and I on frequent occasions, I don't think anyone can deny that they are on occasion contributors to, if not the authors of, their own misfortune. Worryingly, the recent changes to the rules may have given more than a few of them (particularly those on bicycles) the idea that they can be more reckless and unthinking because someone else now has to provide for their safety. As for the 'seedy' description of Bognor - well, I'm one of the people that lives here so I think that lets me off 😄. I also lived in Margate before moving to Bognor so I clearly have a 'thing' for seedy seaside towns. Ho hum...🤔

    Sorry... I'm late, I missed the 'notification' from YT! Have to say, apart from getting my MOT done in March my first 'proper' ride wasn't until a couple of weeks ago. Unless I'm on a 'tour' I have no interest in riding if the weather is poor. (Obviously work and 'life' get in the way too) Babe's looking great! Lovely paint job! My first ride was into Wales....an hour of motorway / A5, then B roads to Bala Lake, B roads to Tywyn / Aberdovey and fastest route back home.. 270 miles round trip. Is Babe OK on E10 fuel? I had a right 'mission' trying to find E5 in North Wales :-( Did you ever get that noise on the engine looked at? To be honest mine clatters like a bag of spanners are rolling around inside anyway , so if it was noisy, I doubt I'd be able to tell... :-) (Oh personally I'd save your money on the exhaust thing)

      Hi Paul, thanks for the compliments for Babe! Always welcome :). After I got the fairings back from Pete, I gave the other panels a light buff/polish and coated with ArmorAll 'Better than a wax' - seems to live up to its name... I've only ridden in Wales once - and it was end of October, beginning of November so the weather wasn't at its best, but the roads and scenery were still fantastic. Ethanol fuel is a bit of a worry. I always use super unleaded so hopefully the ethanol content is minimal (pump says E5 at the moment by I've heard they are planning on enforcing a minimum of E10). I have a theory that the ethanol issue is a useful way of getting older vehicles off the road. So far, Babe has not suffered any ill effects - touch wood. As for the noise 'problem', I really though last year was going to be the year that it got properly investigated. I was anticipating having funds available to splash out on having a Triumph dealer look at it. Yeah, extravagant I know! Unfortunately several things cropped up to put the kybosh on that, not the least of which was having to have approximately two thirds of our roof stripped off, reinforced and re-covered. We knew the roof wasn't in the best shape but it turned out to be a lot worse than we imagined. So that was that. Ride safe.

    It's been a while :-) I've not bought a Vauxhall since I part exchanged my Viva X14 back in the early '80's :-) Nothing against them, just bought a Capri, a Midget, and an Escort, before being lucky enough to land a company car. (Rovers) I seem to remember Vauxhalls had problems with Cam Sensors... I hope they managed to sort that out. My sister had a Frontera and that was a right PITA. Not sure it's 'right' a Dealer should be 'allowed' to 'dump' a car in an Auction knowing it has an 'uneconomical repair' needed. Did you ever do anything about your 'engine noise' on the Triumph? Sounds sweet enough to me...... I bet that 'exposure thing' on your camera drives you barmy....have to say I've never had that, even on a £25 Chinese camera...

    I'm sure you already know this but your insurance should be claiming off your neighbours insurance, and or the van drivers..... He should be 'done' for 'driving without due care' at the very least.....looks like he was turning left, doing about 30+mph ......??? No (photo) evidence he was on the phone, which was my first thoughts. Hope you got your new car sorted. As my dear old Dad used to say 'It's just metal, as long as you are OK' .... I guess it applies to bricks and mortar just the same in your case.....I did a long weekend in Anglesey in June on the bike...off to Pembroke this weekend. Like you, I've not done much this year. Hi Paul, hope you are all doing ok. Yep, all sorted with the insurance. Strangely, my insurers were also HIS insurers:). The police did attend at the time, and the driver was breathalysed, but took no further action, presumably they considered it simply a 'traffic incident'. I am starting to wonder if this area should be a 20mph limit; the roads are quite narrow and cars etc. parked on both sides, yet some drivers (I hate to stereotype but you know the sort - loud exhausts, thumping bass etc) drive around here at stupid speeds. No go with the car I went to look at. It was nice, but there was a problem with the tailgate, it wouldn't open. I also though the panel gaps between the tailgate and the rear quarter panels looked odd. Heard from the dealer yesterday that, when their workshop looked at it, it turns out they would have to spend £2k-£3k to sort it, so they are going to send it to auction instead. I think they got stung on that one. I've had several trips to Wales, but only one on the bike. Great fun. Hope you enjoy (of course you will) and you ride safe as well.

      Hi Siberman, yes, had a couple of close calls on that r'bout. Funniest one was coming onto the r'bout in lane 2, van to my left in lane 1 (had been like that on the approach). There was a police car parked on the nearside kerb just before the Fishbourne exit, ON the r'bout and partly blocking lane 1, so the van driver starts moving into my lane - right beside me. I, of course give him a beep on the horn. Bear in mind the horns on my bike are NOT standard bike 'beeper' ;). So the van driver hit the brakes and moved left again, and I went on my merry way. A short way along the A27, the police car catches me up. Apparently they thought the van had beeped at me because I had done something daft (isn't it always the bike rider that's in the wrong?) so I had to demonstrate that what they had heard was MY bike horn, not the van. I thought about pointing out that they were parked in a dangerous spot, but changed my mind :). How's the ankle (foot?), all healed up now?

I do all my own (and the rest of the family's) IT support (used to be my work), and I save money by not going for the 'latest and greatest' tech. Solid state drives are coming down in price but, for example, the Crucial BX series drives are quite a bit cheaper than their MX series, because they are slightly older technology but still better (faster, quieter, cooler running) than conventional hard drives. Stuff that is a few years 'out of date' is still good, and usually more mature and reliable.

    Guilty as charged! it twoz I ! Did you 'grass me up' or was that a 'shout out'? :-) Back to the audio..... Firstly, this is just my opinion :-).....and from my very limited experience.... I think the audio is much better with the wired mic and the position of the mic. As you have already realized it's not quite that 'simple'. The problem you (and I) have is the noise an air cooled engine makes. The audio (from your voice?) is 'spot on' .... the 'problem' is the engine and possibly the wind noise??. You didn't mention how you were recording your audio or on what device. My first observation is you cannot really compare this with your other videos as you are going at Warp Factor 3 compared to your normal videos.... I've only had 2 helmet cameras and 2 mics.... I bought a cheap Chinese camera... and a mic more expensive than the camera ... I copied this guy .... ua-cam.com/video/22plKNaYab0/v-deo.html (My audio was much better than his) Last year I bought one of the last Drift Ghost S from an authorized dealer in China (no really! It said so on the internet so it must be true) That is my attempt at humour as thats absolutely not fair, everything bar 1 satnav lead I have ever bought direct from China has been exactly as described. I hadn't bargained on the menus on the Drift being in Chinese but thats another story (Google Translate.... I'll get to my point (see why I like your videos?) Using the Drift Ghost S with a Drift mic, despite it having a reputation of being an 'over sensitive' mic I could hardly hear the note of my Honda 500 singles engine....apparently it has something 'built in' to reduce that type of 'noise'.... I even tried using my other mic to put some 'engine noise' back into my videos! Actually it worked very well! I guess what I'm trying to say is some mics are a good match with some cameras...but not all good mics are good matches with all cameras for the results you are looking to achieve. I have a brand new in the packet (BNITP?) Drift mic If you want to try it before you fork out the £20 you are welcome to give it a go (return it or replace it...I'm not giving it away I've only just bought it :-) (Incidentally, both my cameras were fitted to a Schuberth C3 Basic (the quietest helmet I've ever owned, so I understand your problems (can you 'close' that chin vent? If not I suggest you tape it closed) Let me know here if you want to try the Drift mic....and we'll sort something out. PS You should have video'd the Coffee (even though it's Latte) and The Cake) Itchy Boots always videos breakfast !!! :-) Viewing the 'larger' channels less and less these days.... with a few exceptions..... generally I think the money and the sponsorship begins to get in the way.... 'just my opinion' :-) Oddly some that I'd least expected......

      @mightybeanstick9872 4 роки тому

      Hey Paul, cheers bud! Just call me 'stoolpigeon' :). No it was a 'shoutout'. Confession time - all the audio was from my usual bluetooth headset mic. While editing this video, there was some sort of glitch somewhere along the line (either operator error or something to do with the two occasions my editing software crashed as I was working) and my two video tracks become de-synchronised. (I do refer to this at the beginning of my next video, but of course you haven't seen that yet...) I ended up using the 'undo' to try and get back to where the problem occurred without having to re-do too much of the several hours of editing I had already done. Never found the problem so I ended up having to manually re-do quite a bit of work. Along the way I must have undone the audio clip from the wired mic and the caption that explained that it was not much better, even with the changes. However, I didn't notice it was missing so didn't put it back in. Drift is one of the brands I have been considering over the last year or so. I like the form factor and I thought the Ghost X looked good value for money. I've become a bit concerned at the many reports of technical issues and lack of support from Drift, though. There is another brand that is looking more likely to be my next helmet camera, more on that in a later video... :). It IS one of the big names, but the camera is quite reasonably priced. I wasn't aware of riding any faster than normal..? Apart from a couple of overtakes. I think my helmet is a big part of the problem. The chin vent is definitely closed, but even with ear plugs I can hear a high level of wind noise, but not as bad as my previous helmets (both Caberg Justissimo). Maybe I should get a full-face helmet, just for motovlogging. I'll give that thought for when I need to get a new helmet. (edit: I've just seen that a shop not far from me has the C3 Basic in silver for £200... hmmm...) But, as you say, riding a motorbike, unless it's a Goldwing with a barn-door fairing and screen, there is ALWAYS going to be some level of noise. Would the Drift mic work with a phone? I'll look into that (would probably need a headphone/microphone splitter adapter). I wonder if the 'noise reduction aspect only works when it's plugged into a Drift camera, using the camera mic in conjunction with the wired mic to eliminate external noise...? Neither of the cameras I'm currently using are able to use an external mic. I'm also considering getting a 'proper' digital audio recorder, like a Zoom recorder or similar.

    • @paullee6663
      @paullee6663 4 роки тому

      @@mightybeanstick9872 Yes, Drift seem to be having lots of problems with their new models, that's the main reason I searched for a Ghost S as up to a few years ago they were quite popular with vloggers and the quality is fine for my use. It depends on your camera which mic you use in a phone I think some of the new iPods use the Lightning connector, other phones use 3.5mm plug, however the plug is 'for use with phones only' so Drift wouldn't work (nor any other standard plug) To plug into a phone it's my understanding it has to have '3 black rings' around the plug like this www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Pro-Lavalier-Lapel-Microphone-Clip-on-Condenser-W-Mic-For-iPhone-Android-Phone/192936074829?hash=item2cebe2de4d:g:OAcAAOSw70Rc7Y1S Not recommending this one just using it to illustrate the photo of the 3 rings on the plug. You could be right about the mic only doing the noise reduction on the Drift, I don't know the answer to that one. To be honest, I think it works a bit too well in that regard.

    @ Mighty Beanstick I have to confess I never took you for someone that listened to anyone that told you that you had to do something! :-) From what I've heard, there is nothing to be 'gained' from producing videos in anything above 2.7K on YT due to compression etc. I don't have a 4K TV.... I watch on my 17" laptop and find 1080p more than 'acceptable'. Not sure what's going on with your wired microphone? I'm assuming you have some sort of 'deadcat' fitted? If you do, I think the mic is probably a 'bad match' for your camera? I suggest you search for someone that has had good results with a certain make of mic with your camera. From my 'research' the best mic placement is directly in front of your mouth, with a 'deadcat' fitted. (chin vent closed obviously)

      Hi Paul. Yep, looked at the Innovv systems. The C5 is a single camera and the K2, as the dual system, is the one that I have also considered. Cost is a factor with both of these. The C5 is around £180 and the K2 around £280. If money was no object, I'd probably seriously consider the Thinkware M1, although that is £350! Ouch. But it does claim to have electronic stabilisation, one of the few bike-mounted dual systems to do so. The cameras and mounts do look rather chunky though: www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07SJTLP6K?ref=em_1p_6_ti&ref_=pe_19532351_495399291 Not had the 'noise' investigated yet, hopefully a bit later this year, when funds might permit. And yes, 'they all do that' is basically what the dealer told me when I first had the bike and asked about it! Compare this quality with a regular cheap (£50) Viofo a118 dashcam. It's nowhere near. You simply cannot make out numberplates from any sort of distance. Camera looks to be great for insurance purposes, proving who was in the wrong etc but only if they stop to give details. Hello, and yes, I would have to agree that the quality falls short of what I would have wanted, and I haven't yet tested it at night. The camera system cost me £80 last year. You might think that sets it at 'low budget' price range, but that was an Amazon offer, the full list price was (I think) about £120. To be fair, I did see a review on the Innovv K2 dual camera system (£250+) that also said the quality was lacking. I'd rather pay £80 and be disappointed in the video quality than over £250!
