Crackle in potentiometers and switches in our analog mixing console, do we need to change them or is DEOXIT the miracle we are looking for? It’s time to check how good DEOXIT really is when renovating a 30 years old Soundtracs Jade analog mixing console. Our original plan was to replace all 64 gain pots and 64 pan pots since they are really scratchy, but so many people advised us to try DEOXIT ...

Well done - glad Tim was able to help, he's a legend 🙂
Totally agree, Tim is such an enthusiast, legend and so supportive in the process of saving these beautiful consoles.👍
Great video, really enjoying your journey, thanks for sharing 🙂
Thanks mate!👍
love the dental brush, didn't think about it when i didi it on my Soundcraft Delta 200, nice idea
Thanks, it was a happy first try that turned out well. Happy to hear that your Soundcraft got some love. ❤ Did you experience a big difference after the cleaning?
@@moneeo yes, lots of pot and switch noise before ,all gone after the cleanup i just didn't need to change any of them, on a 30 years old console used on the field by a national radio station here (France Inter)
@@sound-ur1bq Sounds amazing - great work!👍❤
there is a way to open theses switches, but be carefull everything can jump out and it takes a long time to fit everything back in there, better method than put it in from outside.
Oooh, they would probably be REALLY clean, but it would take some time to do - there are 1,435 switches... 😳😳
@@moneeo yes probably do it only when the external pathway is not enough
How many liters of de-oxit will the whole desk take ? hahahah :D
Ha ha ha, not sure i wanna think about that right now...🤣🤣
I'm not certain but I dont think you should be getting 0 on the master VUs with your test. -4 might be right. I think you have a lower internal level to get headroom on the masterbus from the channels. Otherwise you would to easily overload the mixbus when running a lot of channels. You must find calibration instructions for that to be sure.
You might be right, maybe -4 was a good level for analog tape machines, and today 30 years later we aim at 0 dB as a reference with digital equipment. Yeah, we really need to learn how to calibrate anyway since most of the channels are different at this point.
@@moneeo Ok, I think you're missing the point. This is not related to what you send to your multitrack or your 2-track machine, analog or digital. This is to keep you from overloading your consoles internal gain staging. You'll figure it out... Keep up the good work.
@@MISSINGMANRec Ah, that's true, ofcourse the levels adds on as the channel count goes up. That makes sense!
@@moneeo (Your channel direct out is another story. If your led meter Is set to monitor the channel output and the console is set to balanced operation then 0 on your meter should give you 1,223V between hot and cold on your group/direct output.)
@@danostlund3032 Excellent, i really need to learn how to measure and do the calibration when all the channels are cleaned. Your tips is a good way to start, thanks for sharing.🙏
I love your approach - I did this with my Syncon B when I bought it over 20 years ago 🙂 Good luck, I'm sure you'll have a fantastic desk when it's finished!
Syncon B looks really interesting - is that the only inline console A&H made?
Great work and good to see success! Don't forget to give the faders some love as well while you are at it. Do some research as there are a few Desolvit products for faders depending on what type you have,.
Faders truly need some love, and it seems like the master fader is responsible for some of the crackles we heard so far. We will have a look at them. Thanks for sharing your thoughts👍
Hey, nice to see your progress with the console. Just curious: have you tested the channel after cleaning the switches but before cleaning the pots? Because from my experience with my own console (Soundcraft Sapphyre which is a bit smaller but quite similar.. same age, same sealed pots, same switches etc.) all crackling was caused by either dirty switches or dirty patchbay contacts (especially the normalling contacts). I actually never to had clean or replace a single pot so far. Of course that might be different with your console but maybe worth a try checking the channel after the switches are cleaned. Btw if you encounter other problems further down the line that affect a number of or all channels, a good tip is to check the power supplies of your console. I had some weird rumbling noises on the master bus and mute groups switching on and off randomly which was driving me crazy. This was all caused by the power supplies. The big smoothing caps had already been replaced but that was not enough. I had to rework the whole thing, replacing all caps, all diodes and bridge recitifiers, clean all contacts etc. After that was done all problems mysteriously vanished ;) Good luck with your restoration. The Jade seems like a great desk!
That's an interesting thought that the switches are the cause of lots of the problems, but it could be possilbe. Might try to clena the switches first and see what effect it has. I guess i will clean all the pots anyway in the end, just to make sure everything works smooth and fine. Wow, what an amazing job with the power supply you made - and so great that it paid off so well.👍 In the future i would love to replace the PSU with a blue dog, but we take it step by step. Thanks for sharing your ideas.🙏
Really great job!!!! I also have a Jade 40 in, and we arrive in December....it's maintenance month for her...but nothing to do, just have to go through it like you, a lot of patience and hours doing this. Well done again !!!
Thanks mate - great idea to have a maintenance month for your Jade. I'll keep that as inspiration for the coming years!👍
Nice to see and hear the results of your hard work. Realy liked the music you ran thru the desk, a lot better to listen to than the sine wave!
Thanks, yeah finally some auditive progress!👍 This is one of the songs from an upcoming album that we are wrapping up!
@@moneeo Nice, sounds intresting, kinda digital but organic.
The great thing with sinus waves is that they really reveal crackles in the signal path. But not so fun to listen to. :-)
Well done Moneeo, it takes some time but patience is a virtue. great video thanks very much👏
This is the perfect time to practice patience. 🙂
This video is all about trying out some of the ideas and tips we have received from you guys, we really appreciate your tips and comments!👍💥
I came across this video of clips, shot from the audience. ua-cam.com/video/BAjBPv9VXr0/v-deo.html&ab_channel=StafrinTV
I think you're right about approaching it from a meditative perspective, each board is a gift of communion. My suggestions, you might make a checklist for each board in a spreadsheet so you can track what you did to each channel and I would think about making a jig to hold and protect the channels while inspecting and cleaning the parts. I've really enjoyed your videos and I'm excited to see and hear the results!
Thanks Wes, great thoughts! A jig would be really useful and might do it in this early stage . there are a couple of channels left to work on.😀
Those square buttons that go through the front panel didn't actually have to be removed, at least to get the front plate off. Good job there.
That,s right, have to check if i can leave em on - that would some time and also be better for the buttons as well. Thanks for the tips!👍
Hi i'm enjoying these servicing videos. I have a tip for you, If you wrap electrical tape around each jaw of the pliers they will not mark the buttons, and this makes It quicker to remove them as it feels better and is safer.
Thanks mate, that's an excellent tips - gonna try it right away!👍
@@moneeo Cool, Also something else to think about is they sell Deoxit in an small bottle D5L, so you waste less,, because as you say it is very expensive and it looks like the D5L is even more expensive! But You can just spray the D5 it into a small bottle with a syringe like needle spout, as the D5L bottle has and put a few drops into each switch. Could be worth an experiment as thats a lot of switches! Keep up the good work. Also as i'm watching video you can also spray the D5 into something and wet the tooth brush and again this will waste less!
@@JAMIEPHILLIPS-g3j Aha, that idea with a syringe sounds like a really interesting option. With the spray there is so much waste going beside the switch. Have to look in to that one as well - thanks!🙏
@@moneeo Yo, No problem, Also like I say just spray some into say, a jam jar and wet the tooth brush in that for cleaning connectors. Anyway the whole process will greatly improve the console. Cheers!
@@JAMIEPHILLIPS-g3j Wooow, just checked out that D5L - it's almost ONE LITER of deoxit🤣🤣 - now i know what to wish for christmas!!👍❤
Great stuff Moneeo. It does take alot of time to clean everything, hopefully it will be worth it in the end. Keep up the good work and please keep the video's coming. Thanks very much
Hopefully we get up the speed as we go, and find improvements of the process. 🙂
i know how you feel!!i just got a soundtracs pc midi 24!!beautiful machines!!
Yeah, lets keep those beautiful machines alive!❤
I know it sucks to do this. But recapping the entire console will be the best option.
Have to start to get the console up and running properly, and after that i will probable do a recap on a channel or two to see what different it makes. The Jade's dont run as hot as many other consoles, so it seems to they are a lot more friendly to the caps over time.
now imagine if this was a Neve VR, SSL 4000E console or API Legacy. good luck getting any of those type of consoles up those stairs. I brought my 48 channel Allen & Heath upstairs by myself and it was 150 pounds. Never again, Good Choice. The Soundtracs console are great sounding consoles.
Ha ha, your so right - stairs and mixing consoles are note the best combination.🤣🤣 Love the GL serie, they where such a great work horse for live shows back in the days. Great for studios today👍
The MARKED cable is actually the Negative one, that mark is a Minus symbol (------) and the Unmarked one is the Positive one. Same as Capacitors.
Aha, that makes sense.👍
Alligator Clips or Crocodile Clips. In Spanish they are called Caiman Clips
Great, it seems like the term is universal - Caiman Clips sounds amazing!👍
What a complicated job💪👌Exciting!
Fantastic can't wait to hear the performance. You guys rock!!!!
Thanks Joey, it's such a strange and difficult instrument to play, but totally amazing at the same time. 😀
congrats! Love your videos. I work on similar equipment and always want to celebrate when other techs overcome another engineering challenge on their way to better audio signal paths.
Yeah - always celebrate the small (and big) victories!🥳👍
Great stuff. Glad you got them replaced. Onwards and upwards with the recording and mixing. Well done folks
Thanks for your earlier tips about flux - that really made the difference this time. So great to keep learning!❤

Hi Per and Irene, good to see you still going. There is a great series on restoring a Sony MXP3036 console which give you some ideas of things to try. ua-cam.com/video/fmqtB1R8F4k/v-deo.html
Give them to me :) The GL is a nice console for free and should be low maintenance. The older one…could be everything. Also you can still throw them away yourself ;) Hope that helps. All the best, Tobi
Yeah the GL is probably not to bad as it is!👍 Ha ha, the Soundcraft seems to be another story - most pots have not been touched in 15 years or so, and is a bit stuck 🤣🤣
Hey folks you 2 are amazing, what a brilliant idea. What do you guys think of doing an electronic version of Pink Floyds......Time, from Dark Side Of The Moon?
Thanks, such a fun project and were happy to share.😀 Yeah, that could be something, these bells would work great for the intro.👍
Its SAD, but these old babies need so much love and care.. I have a Beautiful soundcraft Studio sitting in a corner... :(
Yeah it's sad when thinking about it. How is the condition of your Soundcraft Studio today?
Save em’
That is very tempting...
It's tempting to always grab gear but dont lose focus on what your core mission / plan is. If one of those helps for "live" or something you need portable for then it could be useful. Otherwise dont just grab something as it takes space to store - both physical and in your mind. If you have time you could clean them up/test them and sell them but dont expect much money
Dont worry, were not loosing focus here.😀 We just feel it's sad to see things go away in the trash, that could be of use for some people. Hmm, lets see what we decide to do...🤔
Thanks for the great video, what an amazing project! Peter
Thanks - this will be a lot of fun to keep working on. Stay tuned!🙏
Dont change any pots , until you have proved , it really is the POT , get a SCOPE on it FIRST , it could be something further down ,, , , get some DEOXIT D5 and spray switches , you can do this from the TOP , pull off tge BUTTS with pliers and spray down the NECK of the switch , and pump the switch , especically the LINE SW , the EQ sw and the VCA SWITCH , because the signal passes thru all these switch contacts , if you look at the circuit , even when the switch is OFF the , the signal passes thru the " other side " contacts ,so these have to be clean as well as the ' switched contacts "
Yeah, i have been getting seconds thoughts before i change the pots. Your right, the switches ARE also making crackles so that could be the first thing to try out easy. Thanks for the Deoxit tips, thats a good start. I am thinking of trying Deoxit F5 on the pots as a first step. Could that be worth trying? I never used an osc, but this could be the perfect time to get to learn how to use one. Is there anything special feature i need to look out for when buying my first osc?

A question - when you are soldering - what headset are you using. It looks great - like an old jewellers magnifier. Trying to get something similar but have only found cheap junk.
This is the one i found. It has three different lenses to combine and a small LED light that could have been a little bit stronger IMO. It was around 33 $/€ and pretty OK quality. I takes some time to get used to. in the beginning its easy to get feeling of sea sick, but it's great when you have getting used to it. www.velleman.eu/products/view/?id=387484

Excellent, thats great ot know!👍
Yes, they are called crocodile clips in the UK, and in the US they are called aligator clips.

Well done folks great job and series. Maybe put some solder mask on the jumper cable? Remember, flux is your friend and IPA with a tooth brush will clean all the flux residue away. Thanks folks, keep the videos coming
Thanks.👍 Have never used solder mask before, is that to protect the wire from oxide? Flux is new to me, but it seems like it could help get the solder to connect a lot better, right?
@@moneeo Yeah the solder mask protects the wire and also protects shorts if anything comes in contact with the wire. Get UV mask, spread it on and cure it with a UV lamp ( pretty cheap to buy the mask and a UV lamp). Flux will help with flowing the solder to the pads ( solder points on the PCB )Some good flux would be Amtech 559 comes in a syringe and easy to apply. Get some IPA ( Isopropol alcohol ) and a toothbrush to clean away the flux residue with some cotton buds and lint free tissue paper👊
