Hornby experience
Hi thank you for the comment. I wouldn’t agree on all Hornby’s locomotives. They have a huge catalog of models so it’s clear not all are going to be home runs 😊👍
Horrible ,motor buzz suggests your DC controller may need replacement. Long wheelbase loco and tight curves do not go well together but maybe back to backs on drivers may need checking?
Hi Stephen thanks for the comment! And it’s just the Hornby select controller from train sets, they always sound like this when attempting a crawl. They’re just not great, I have just upgraded to DCC but need a small fortune to upgrade all my locos in one go 😂 yes it’s something I need to check as it was derailing on third radius so clearly something isn’t right. I’ve also contacted TMC where I purchased from to see what they have to say on the matter hopefully they can help 😊👍
Horrendous glue marks to the cab window frames on just about every example of this 9f I've come across has put me off new releases from Hornby for a while. Unacceptable quality control for a modern RTR loco
Hi thanks for the comment, I didn’t even realise but does look like thick glazing seems to only be through the side you can see it. For me personally it doesn’t detract from the rest of the detail. But I can get how it would bother some 😊👍
Hi Harry. I'd have to agree with most of the other comments. Mine runs extremely well on curves even tighter than 2nd radius, and will happily haul both my very heavy Welsh coal train and 14 Lima BR Mk1 coaches, neither of which are known for their free-running characteristics. I think Hylton's right: it sounds as if yours is faulty. Don't delay (like I have on a couple of occasions), and send it back for a replacement, as at £150 it's excellent value for money.
Hi Stephen, thank you for the comment! And yes it does seem like most have a very good model in comparison to mine. Like Hylton says it’s definitely faulty. I have contacted TMC and await to hear back from them to see where to go from here. But you’re quite right at that price it’s hard to say no 😊👍
@YorkshireRailways You should have any difficulty getting it replaced (or refunded, if you so wish). TMC is a reputable company. Buy if you do, Consumer law is very clear in such circumstances and is on your side. PS: I guess the reason these 9Fs can operate over exttemely tight curves is the flangless centre driving wheels, which, of course, are prototypical.
@ yes I’ve heard great things about them but I’m ashamed to say it’s my first time shopping with them 😂 but I’ll get it sorted. Preferably would like to have the model but depends if they have more in stock they can exchange it for. And yes I did notice that it’s a very clever design 😊👍
I love 9Fs and even commissioned an artist for a painting of one that now sits over my fireplace. I have the earlier release of this model and have been really ahppy with it. I might have given consideration to this model, but my problem with it is the name. 92023 only carried the name Black Prince in preservation which, without significant artistic licence, means it only looks right running on a layout that depicts a preserved line, which mine doesn't.
Hi thank you for the comment! And that painting sounds amazing! And yes not to everyone’s taste but the North Norfolk Railways has a special place in my heart so I had to get one 😊👍
@@YorkshireRailways That makes sense. I've lost track of who owns Black Prince now, but I know that it was once owned by David Shepherd.
@ I believe it is still owned by the North Norfolk railway but it’s ran out of its boiler card so won’t be allowed to run until it has some sort of overhaul which will be ££££££
No surprise More surprised if the Hornby stock worked, feel sorry for people who still look forward to their range releases and pre order stuff for them prices Whatever happened to 2006-2010 Hornby
Hi, thanks for the comment. Would disagree as there’s plenty of Hornby models that are a class act. But as with all manufactures there will be defective models. It’s just an unfortunate event when you get one 😊👍
NICE WORK ON THE VIDEO ❤❤❤❤❤
Hi Dennis, thank you for the comment! Glad you enjoyed the video 😊👍
@@YorkshireRailways You're welcome
I think the Hornby 9F is a beautiful-looking model. Your observations 100% mirror mine - of another variant. Mine was hauling a 10-coach low-drag BR blue/grey rake. The motor current draw started increasing substantially, up to 500 mA. I saw the 'Black Prince sale' and through the poor performance, I abstained - sale lost. Mine is with Hornby now, hopefully to at least replace the motor ... not certain what I really want, but it's obvious I cannot use the 9F on a regular basis. My Bachmann 94xx tank has no problems hauling the same rake - and doesn't slow much! My curves are 95% 4th radius, 5% 3rd radius and my 9F slowed A LOT. Al.
Hi Al, thanks for the comment and that’s interesting to hear and I’m sorry you’ve suffered the same issues I have, hopefully it’s just we’re the unfortunate souls and we have both received duds. I’ve contacted TMC on where to go with mine in hope of either a replacement or repair 😊👍
A very fair and honest review, thanks YR. I purchased a Hornby Black Prince (only slightly discounted) in August. My initial reaction was to be very impressed with its appearance both overall and in terms of detail. I didn't notice a significant lack of weight (but didn't specifically examine this aspect). This is certainly a problem with all my Hornby A4 locos (main range). At the moment, I do not possess a layout, simply a short Y-shaped test track. I was very satisfied with the 9F's running when crawling and at moderate speed. It handled the points very capably at the limited range of speeds possible on my track. But I don't know how it will perform on curved track, when travelling at speed in reverse and when hauling a prototypical consist. It would be very disappointing if the torque was inadequate and I would then question, as you do, the quality of the motor and the product's value for money. But at the moment, I'm not able to offer an opinion. Hope these comments help!
Hi Rob thank you for the comment and kind words. Glad to know you have a good 9F. I have decided to contact TMC to seek advice on the performance of mine as many do seem to have good runners 😊👍
I also purchased the Black Prince from TMC at the bargain price and received it late December 2024, mine runs really well on 3rd, 2nd and even on parts of my first radius track I have no issues with derailing or pulling large (to me anyway) mixed coaches and wagons over 20 units long. I do have a DC Gaugemaster controller and the 9F motor is almost completely silent with really smooth control over all the speed ranges. So as others have suggested I would recommend a return for a replacement as this is a fine loco. Wishing you all the best and hope you get a good un.
Hi Paul, glad to know you have managed to get a good Black Prince! I have contacted TMC to seek their advice on how to move forward because as you say multiple people seem to have bought them and all seem to run a lot better than mine. Will update when I find out more info 😊👍
This review sounds just like a Sams trains review. You've studied his style and cloned every move!
I hoped you asked his permission to copy his channel !
The loco looks absolutely stunning!
Sams trains doesn’t own the idea of a model Railway review, go back and watch channels like Intercity82, a guy who started making model reviews in the late 2000s. Of course there’s going to be similar talking points in any review, like box, detail, performance, etc. Its not something you need permission for, unless you’re directly ripping an idea off.
Not really. Sam spends a great deal of time dissecting the mechanism whereas YR doesn't (at least in this review). That is not a criticism of either of them. All reviewers are entitled to adopt their own approach, provided they are fair and constructive. Both are, IMO.
@@robmckenzie2538 He even uses the same vocab eg Repeating the word stunning over and over.
Hi there, Google lookin model - Have you Run it in” before pulling a load or dyu not have to do that these days?..
Hi thank you for the comment! And yes the model was run in 30 mins in either directions before adding a load. Some manufacturers say you don’t but me personally I always do 😊👍
It's irritating to see that there is a recurrent inconsistency in the quality of the motors Hornby mounts into their engines... I should play to the lottery, my TWO 9F (yeah, two, I'm a nutcase...) have no motor problems... There is a S-15 expected in December this year, the one I own now have a faulty motor, I'll try my chance again... Mines had only been run on 484mm radius Piko curves, what you can call R2 1/2 radius, and I had no problems with that, unlike the Bachmann 9F I have that derails all over the place. I think they might perform well on R2. Completely agree on the price. You have Dapol Manors, more complicated on the livery, for GBP50 less...
Yes, Hornby do seem to have a problem with quality consistency...
Hi Olivier thank you for the comment. Touch wood this is the first Hornby locomotive I’ve had issues like this with, I’ve contacted TMC where I bought it from to seek advice and where to move forward. Good to hear you have no issue running your 9F’s on R2 I’ll have to give it another try if I can get a replacement sent out 😊👍
Something must be wrong with yours, just bought mine from TMC, its a great runner, it pulls 40 coal wagons easily, these are old wagons, 40 years at least, i do run on DCC and have fitted sound in it too.
Hi Ray, thank you for the comment! And yes I fear as much I have just contacted them to see where we can go from here. Hopefully a swap and a new one might prove to be better. If so I will do an updated review to show the true potential. I imagine on DCC with sound it’s amazing and I can’t wait to get mine chipped. Which decoder did you go with if you don’t mind me asking? 😊👍
I picked up an old Hornby TTS Decoder with speaker, I am well pleased with it, used a 21 to 8 pin adaptor which I had already. You can easily spend a lot of money!!
@@raymondjohnson6129 that sounds good and yes I have about 30+ locomotives currently so going to cost a fair bit to DCC chip and sound them all
Sams trains replaced the motorwith a coreless one and now much better! Maybe check the gauging of the wheels, could be the cause of the derailing?
Hi David thanks for the comment! Yes I would imagine that would be a good solution, however unlike Sam I don’t really possess the talent to do that and I wouldn’t feel comfortable trying whilst it’s still in the warranty period. I haven’t checked the gauging so will do that and see if adjustments are needed to allow smoother running. Thank you 😊👍
Great review. I think I stick with my tender drive version. Stay safe mate
Hi Gordon, thank you for the comment! And it would seem from other comments that my example shouldn’t be the case and that it more than likely is a faulty model. I’ve contacted TMC for advice to see what they can do for me 😊👍
Why is it buzzing ? as mine don't .
Hi Alan, thanks for the comment. It’s my controller that’s the Hornby select from train sets. It’s not very good but I am in the process of upgrading to DCC, I have the controller just need chip my locos 😊👍
The last 3 I bought from Hornsby had to go back for repair, I’m no longer buying!
Hi Bill, thanks for the comment and I’m sorry this is your experience. I have a feeling this one will be as well, the motor just doesn’t seem to be performing as others suggest it should. All the best 😊👍
You need to change your controler Patrick Quinn IRL
Hi Patrick thank you for the comment. Yes fully aware my controller is terrible but I already have. The only problem is it’s DCC so I’m currently in the process of chipping my locos which isn’t going to be cheap 😂 so because I’m taking this step I won’t be changing my analog controller. All the best 😊👍
I got one of these sound fitted for less than 200 quid. I think it’s from the first batch (number 92002), and it performs pretty well. It’s a shame buying models these days feels a bit like a lottery. Will it work properly, or will it not? Are you feeling lucky today?
Hi thanks for the comment and wow that does sound like a bargain. Yes unfortunately it can be like that but I’ve being lucky this far. I’m tempted to get into contact with TMC and see what they think. All the best and take care 😊👍
@@YorkshireRailways sending them a polite enquiry can’t hurt!
@@Alpha-oo8 yeah did that this morning but I imagine been the weekend I won’t hear back till Monday
Looks great but runs like a pig is a common theme. It makes you wonder if you got the one out of a thousand that performs dismally or did you get the normal 9F Black Prince. Nice review, Jersey Bill
Hi Jersey Bill thanks for the comment! And yes it is making me scratch my head. I’m tempted to contact TMC to see their thoughts on the matter and see if I actually have a faulty model. May be the best thing going forward. Thanks for the kind words mate and all the best 😊👍
@@YorkshireRailways I think you, Me, and Hylton are of the same mind send it back and get a replacement. Good luck
Yes I’m going to get in touch with both Hornby Direct and TMC to see their thoughts and I think it will be going back for a replacement.
Is that the 9F or your controller making that awful 50 Hz hum ? sounds like 1/2 wave rectification ? and unless you bought it from TMC for £149.99 then yes you have wasted your hard earned money :)
Hi thank you for the comment! And more than likely it’s the controller. I never bothered upgrading my analogue controller from the Hornby select that comes with the train sets as I knew I would be upgrading to a DCC controller at some point which I did get for Christmas. However it means I now need to chip all my locos, so for review purposes I will still be using the Hornby one for now. I’m interested to try taking the chip out of my Class 91 and put it in the 9F to test if it is the controller. Might be good for another video? And well I did get it from TMC in their after Christmas sale but I had a further 5% knocked off from a discount code I had in a magazine so I can’t complain about the price just the quality of the model. I’m tempted to see TMC’s thoughts on if this loco needs to go back for a swap or if it is knows to run like this. Anyway thank you for the comment and all the best 😊👍
Guagemaster analogue controllers use half wave rectification because DC motors run much better with it. PS Although they don't make the din that the one in the vid does!
Harry, great review my friend. I really like this tooling but I am shocked to see the performance, I would expect better. I suspect you may have a bit of a dud here as others haven’t seemed to have the same issues, worth a swap out maybe? You won’t be happy with this long term I suspect. Keep up the great work bro.
Hi Hylton thank you so much mate! And I feel the same the tooling for the model is incredible it’s really well detailed with some nice features included. But I’m stumped with the performance. I’m waiting to see collectively what others say if this is a common thing or I’ve got a dud like you say. I’ve had it about three weeks and I’m tempted to contact TMC to see there thoughts on this because you’re quite right I don’t see myself being happy with this long term. Which is a shame as the Black Prince has a special place in my railwaying heart to have it be so bad 😂 either way time will tell I’ll fill you in when I have more to update. All the best mate!
Totally agree with you, Hylton. Mine (also bought from TMC @ £149) is an excellent performer. Harry's example does seem to be faulty.
@@stephendavies6949 that’s great to know Stephen! I have contacted TMC so will see if they can help sort things 😊
Hi mate I hope you are well Yes i got one from 1st batch. She can do second radius with easy She may be hornby best model i Only my opinion What controller do you use Main thing is that you like the model. Keep safe ARP
Hi mate, yes keeping well! And wow seems to be a huge difference between yours and mine. I am wondering whether to try swap it for a new one as it doesn’t seem good in comparison. I’m using the Hornby select which I know isn’t brilliant but I’ve upgraded recently for a DCC controller just need to chip all my locos 😂
@@YorkshireRailways i was going to say use a gaugemaster combi for dcc ready or analogue It does not buzz. Every one is models are different
I was going to get one of those but decided I wanted to take the leap to DCC which I’m glad I have as it’s a different ball game with sound so I’m looking forward to getting more locos chipped.
Jacked up prices and lower quality standards
Hi Elliott thanks for the comment and I wouldn’t necessarily agree with all their models but I do find it interesting that a lot pop up in the sales at a really high discount 😊👍
Doing same locos wouldn't be so bad if they all didn't keep doing same numbers. Accurascale are doin 007 & 033 same liveries as Hornby done. So if you've already got one you ain't Gona buy another.
Hi Thanks for the comment and yes that can be the case for a lot of people but I’d imagine for the price it could give more beginners looking for a high quality model the chance to get one 😊👍
Nice Gner set
Hi Tony, thanks for the comment! I’m a big fan of the GNER takes me back to my childhood going up and down the east coast 😊👍
The announcements were great this year for me, I’ve saved so much money not ordering anything. I’ve even managed to resist getting some Beatles tat 😂
Hi William, thanks for the comment and I’m in the same boat, there’s the odd bit I might pick up but waiting to see what comes from other manufacturers first. But I’m sure there’s still time to get some beetles wagons 😉 All the best 😊👍
Many thanks for you're in depth review of Hornby 2025 releases. I thought it was a good all-around release, something for everyone. I am incredibly excited for the lady of legend saint class locomotive. I have been on the real train many times, and it's beautiful. Looking at the development so far, I think we are all in for a treat when this one comes out.
Hi thank you so much for your comment and feedback! Yes the saints class I think is the highlight for most, hopefully it will be a good one. I will say for me personally there wasn’t much I will be picking up this year from the new range but I do think it’s a good all rounder and definitely for beginners perfect time to start with the amount of affordable railroad models on the market 😊👍
The real Class 395 Javelin train Rail 200 livery has not been revealed yet, so Hornby were not allowed to reveal the livery. Hornby have said you can swap the magnetic couplings on the new B4 starter set loco and wagons for standard NEM couplers. The magnetic couplings will be safer and easier for youngsters to use. The Railroad class 800s coaches do not have interiors. I was happy to see some more affordable offerings added to the range.
Yes I’m very excited to see what they are cooking up. That’s a great idea but good to know it is a nem pocket so you can interchange them. I thought that would be the case with the class 800 but I’m excited to see them. And yes the railroad range has had some series love this year Thanks for the comment 😊👍
Your reference to Beatles Tate makes no sense. You're not a business, so you clearly don’t understand the appeal. The Beatles wagons are collectibles, not just for model railway fans but other collectors, and they always sell out. They’re clearly profitable for Hornby, so just because you don’t like them or won’t buy them doesn’t mean they aren’t successful. Criticising what you don’t understand makes no sense so get back in your box.
@@markcale7034 Hi Mark, as I’ve established many times I do not have an issue with Hornby making the beetles wagons/trains if it works for them so they can fund new tooling great it’s a win win. It’s some innocent fun as many people do call it the beetles tat models. I’m fully aware it’s not aimed at me or my age group and that is okay. Only some light hearted banter it’s not that deep. If you are one of the people who really enjoy the beetles range that’s great and I’m glad you enjoy your models. Have a good day 👍
Well, that was a long one but very informative so hats off to you. Great video, Jersey Bill
Hi Jersey Bill, thanks for the comment as always! And yeah bit of a jam packed year to talk about stuff 😂 I was loosing my voice a little towards the end. But thank you so much glad you enjoyed the video 😊
I wonder if the HST set will have a scale length coach. The original had a shortened coach.
Hi Andrew thanks for the comment! I believe it’s using the same tooling as the GWR High speed train set that does have the long mk3 so if it does it will be a decent set to go for 😊👍
Has the 9f got a metal body
Hi James thanks for the comment, no it has a plastic body shell review is coming soon so stay tuned 😊👍
Great breakdown Harry, enjoyed watching this and your opinions. I think Hornby did a solid on most of their pricing and approach to getting the next gen in with new more modernized train sets. I like the offering. Their strongest launch in a while.
Hi Hylton thank you so much mate! And yeah I think they have a very solid range this year as well, nice to see they’ve gone heavy on railroad range at affordable pricing hopefully will bring in new blood to the hobby. Hope you’re keeping well my friend 😊👍
Hi mate I hope you are well Saint for me The new b4 was on hornby a model world series 2 If it helps young people to get in to the hobby it good The yearly and Christmas wagon price is too high. It great to see rr get a good budget price Keep safe ARP
Hi ARP, thanks mate doing a lot better now! And I can see the saint selling out on preorder seems many are after it! And that’s good to know, seems a good price and nice to see a new tooled railroad 0-4-0. Yeah the Christmas wagons are a little pricy for effectively a new print every year they could be a lot cheaper. Keep well my friend 😊👍
They can't keep everyone happy, but i think Hornby have had a pretty good try in all fairness. I'll definitely be buying a Swallow 91 as the GNER one ive got is brilliant. I will also buy 66723 'Chinook' for the livery. Seriously good luck to Hornby. Its where most of us started.
Hi Matt, thanks for the comment! Couldn’t agree more it’s where most of us started and this years range definitely has something for everyone. Great to hear the models that are on your wishlist. I’d definitely like to grab another Class 91 but will have to see how my budget goes this year 😂
Apparently, Buccleuch is pronounced buckloo
Hi and thank you for the comment, I never knew that but it doesn’t seem to sound as fancy 😂
With due respect a lot of waffle. I'll wait for Hornby's release i doubt there will much to interest me - a load of boring modern tin boxes - diesel and electric; very little new steam .
Hi Ray thanks for the comment and feedback. And well for me personally the tin box modern image some takes my interest as I enjoy been able to see the real life locos running on the mainline as well as on my layout but I get they’re not for everyone. Steam does take my interest as well but I’m sure there will be something to float everyone’s boat 😊 think we are in an era of model railways where we are really being spoilt for choice. But not long to wait for the announcement! Take care and all the best 😊👍
I hope they do a new tooled LNER Raven A2 as well as Gresley A1 "Great Northern" in the original GNR livery

Caley single, a decent 4f, and derived from that anSR Q, re vamp the l&y pug, and 8f with smoke... mn with smoke seems likely, GER e4 240 re tooled off the excellent j15 would make sense , and rather obviously a class 74, no 3rd rail required!...
@@mikeyratcliff3400 Hi Mikey thanks for the comment and some amazing suggestions there! Not long to go until we find out
We have the same temperature problem where I am here in the states, and it is no wonder you're not 100%. Time for a small heater I'd say. We will see how in touch with your Nostradamus heritage you are soon, and I look forward to it. You're a trooper so hang in, Jersey Bill
Hi Jersey Bill, thanks for the comment as always. Yeah it has been a tad cold here, getting better now though the temps have been rising today. And it’s one of them things there was a lot of colds and bugs going round through December just unfortunately I got every one of them 😂 and yes I do have one but it’s not the best I could do with getting a new one. And yes won’t be long until we find out so stay tuned for my breakdown of the new range see if I get any right 😊 take care mate and all the best 😊👍
A few days ago I got one of the new Hornby class 08's which retail at £199.00. For a few extra quid you could get a new tooled model with better features so the price isn't bad when compared with Hornby.
@@williamvanalen9414 Hi William thanks for the comment, and yes I saw over Christmas a lot of the Hornby 08s were heavily discounted but I wouldn’t be buying one at full RRP, myself I am waiting for the Bachmann release. Haven’t got one on preorder yet but it’s on my watchlist 😊👍
How did you manage to reassemble the loco? I hove one of the new pugs with the screws in the body and I can never reassemble it first time and never without the help of a screw driver.
@@williamvanalen9414 hi William thanks for the comment, and I found it pretty easy to be honest. The best way is having a small tray or pot for the screws and remember the way you take it apart. Because reassembly is just doing it in reverse. But yeah had no trouble with Smokey Joe. Sorry that’s not the most help, but all the best with your locos 😊👍
Heljan is releasing a Class 153 and Class 155's. I have preordered 2 of the Class 155's as the Hornby one is getting a bit old now and was based on an old Dapol model. I have a couple of these but non are great runners and since the Heljan announcement these are on the forsale list. Agree about the Hornby Class 153 which is a great little model. I have 4 of these. Not sure whether to get a Heljan version yet. Will see what the Class 155's are like first. I personally would like to see the Network Rail livery version of the Class 153 which has some of the windows blanked out. Think it is based on the old Arriva turquoise colour. As for other things I would like to see the HST in Network Rail yellow (the flying banana) along with the coaches to match. I would also generally like to see more Network Rail engineering wagons and coaching stock from any manufacturer added to their ranges. I think they are all missing a trick here as I am pretty sure engineering stock would fly off the sleeves. The one model I would love someone to do (please Accurascale or Revolution Trains or Dapol) is the Class 185 DMU in both the old and new TPE liveries. Not sure why Bachmann have not done this as they already have tooling for the Siemens Desiro EMU and pretty sure Siemens used the same body shell but with different cabs i.e. non corridor type on the real things. Only issue is if Bachmann did this it would be at some stupidly ridiculous price like £500+.
@@jonathanmillar1975 Hi Jonathan, thank you for the comment! And some great suggestions! I do think there is a high demand at the moment for network rail engineering vehicles so it will be interesting to see which manufacturers jump on the band wagon and flood the market with them. Not long to go till we find out. All the best 😊👍
I hope they do a C12 4-4-2T, 1P 2-4-2T and a N5 0-6-2T
@@christopherbellamy639 Hi Christopher those are some cracking suggestions. Only time will tell what will come. All the best 😊👍
Hi mate I hope you are well I hope you get well soon Err your predictions are a bit safe if am honest but it your video Ive done a wishlist on my channel for the year. Could hornby do a steam generator tank engine Ive subscribered to you channel Keep safe ARP
Hi Adi thanks for the comment and thank you for subscribing. Yes maybe a bit safe but tried to think logically as to what we might see more than a wish list of locos I want sort of thing. A steam generator tank engine would be great just not sure if the technology is small enough to fit in a loco of that size yet. All the best 😊👍
@@YorkshireRailways would be interesting to see a smoke generator in a tank engine or a diesel cuz they smoke as well
@@AdiPullen could see them doing a diesel more than the tank engine but I think for now they’ll be sticking to big tender engines
I would love to see an EMR IEP - but that would require new tooling as the Midland Mainline ones I think have shorter coaches and the nose is a different shape. Never mind more Coke stuff lets have an IrnBru train! Some new starter set locos would be welcome.
Some great additions there and haha I think there’s a market to do a whole load of fizzy drink inspired models, it’s got to be a better seller than the beetles 😂 I’d be interested to see if a few train sets of decent quality make the cut. Take care and all the best 😊👍
