I used a base image and gave each area a unique color. A python script created the image and all variants by recoloring a specific unique color.

Great tips, thanks! The maze can be solved in a much simpler fashion: you just have to open it with Paint and use the paint bucket over one of the edges to color it. You'll end up with two different colored halfs of the maze, with the solution between them. One caveat for these strategies is that they work only with mazes that have an entrance and an exit, so one path divides the whole thing in two unconnected sections. When the ending of the maze is located in the middle of it, this hack won't work. You'll need some extra steps: erase a small segment of the border and try the gimp/paint trick. It will probably solve the maze just partially. Iterate by erasing additional segments, until you get the whole solution.

Loved this video. Planning on attending my first Going Caching Mega, and working on Rome puzzles. I've seen (and used) most of the techniques that were used in this puzzle, but still learned a few things. Fotoforensics and AperiSolve were both new to me, and I added them to my toolbox. Thanks, and hopefully run into you in Rome.

These geocaching puzzle videos are absolutely fantastic! Allan does an excellent job of explaining the complicated puzzles in an understandable way. Thank you for putting so much time into this. Although it sometimes takes some effort for me to understand the English explanation, I am happy that I took up the challenge, and I am increasingly successful in converting everything into Dutch in my head. The fun I get from these videos is second to none, and I look forward to more adventures in the world of geocaching!
