Today there's a lot of experimentation in drone design. The Quickie configuration could be good for a CTOL "horizontal" quadrotor - electric props mounted in the wings. It would be optimized for speed and endurance rather than VTOL capability.

As an avid Diamond Pilot I can say : Yes, beautiful aircraft, industries best handling qualities, perfect Garmin G1000 suite and not to forget the fabulous Jet Fuel powered FADEC engine. BUT : For this price, the aircraft range is too small. Practically (if you plan with a nearby alternate in IFR-Conditions) you can just fly around 2 hours and 45 minutes. Finish! Why does this big SEP airplane has only 11 Gallons more fuel then the DA40 NG ? And the ridiculous MTOM of 1999 kilograms. The official answer from the company : Because their owners (in Europe) don't want to pay the IFR-fees (because in Europe, you don't pay IFR-Fees if your MTOM is lower then 2000 kgs). Sorry to say; this sounds to me like a bad joke. With such a big wing and the 300hp engine, you should be able to boost the MTOM to at least 2300kgs and it should be possible to add 20-25 gal more fuel compared to the DA40 NG.

The Cirrus SR22 line is the modern day doctor killer.... Same reason. Too much plane for an inexperienced pilot. Just because you can buy it doesn't mean you are good enough to fly it.

In 2006 I tried out Mooney, Cirrus, and Columbia 400. By far the Columbia 400 got my nod. I owned one for 7 years. It gave way to a TBM 850. But it's a great plane and better than the others in its class IMHO

Grew up around The Starship, got a chance to work on one in flight at Raytheon. Always liked the Q2, but they had a problem getting airborne before a fix was created (Flow conditioners on dihedral wing) and had problems with low power on Q1 and Q200 (Low Hp and unavailable powerplant/CoG issues) but they were fixed by the time the Q2 came around. I want one badly, but I have accepted it will probably never happen.

As a teenager in the ‘70s, I followed with eager anticipation every new kit design, especially those by Rutan. The Quickie and Q2 really caught my eye and imagination. But sadly, I was never in a position financially to build a kit plane. Aside from several trips to Oshkosh in the 90s, an inactive ASEL pilot’s license, and a 3 1/2 year stint as a flight nurse in the USAFR, my keen attention to aviation can now only be quenched by looking up….and watching videos like these. Thanks for bringing back the memories!

I attended the Oshkosh airshow in the late 1970's and got to hear Burt Rutan speak about his Vari-Eze. I had an FAA A&P license plus pilot license and he convinced me I needed to build one. I bought his plans and started gathering all the components. Shortly afterwards I had the opportunity to buy a 1946 Cessna 120 so sold my Vari-Eze plans and components. Always been sorry I didn't build that beautiful airplane. Burt is a genius!
