How I Plan on Feeding Hay This Year

We've (partially) made the switch from square bales of hay to round bales, which means we need a new feeding system. I am planning to roll out the round bales for several beneficial reasons, and I am also planning to avoid using a tractor to reduce soil compaction and mud. My wife is excited to use them as well! They really do work good 👍
A set of these pruners are on my bucket list for sure! thanks for showing them to us
They definitely do make it easy!
You have to work with what works for you and what you can afford to use. The newest Mazda gadget advanced don’t do good if you can’t use it or afford it.
DeWalt Pruners: amzn.to/3DzQ4K1
Sure, there is a tool for every job but the way you're doing it works pretty well. It's kind of how the Stoney Ridge farm does it but than on a different scale.😊 That electric golf cart is nice, I have one for the last 25 years and I call it my drink and drive mobile on my own property. Glad I found your YT channel. BTW nice cows, are they long horns?
@TheDutchGambit Stoney Ridge is where I partially got the idea from. I have been watching him since about 2016 when he was a small channel 😆 We have always had a 4 wheeler, and about a year ago, we bought the golf cart. Turns out, for 90% of tasks, the golf cart does better/is more comfortable. The cows are Scottish Highlands. Something relatively new we got into. Glad you found the channel and hope you stick around!
What do you think: could a chicken ramp be built out of a single metal roofing piece (a narrow one), one that has ridges going from end to end length wise? If you screwed slats using the ridges, water would be able to run off easily (rain, spraying off). If it lacked stability, 1" - 2" slats that run the length could be screwed on with the same screws you attach the runners. It's a thought but not sure.
That actually seems like a decent idea. I think it could work!
love them round bales!!!
You and me both 😄

@@yamgray5006 Sorry Yam
Question for ya ?? Seems Toyota rav 4 & highlanders all years seem to have warping issues ? Like your input on or if you heard the cause for these issues ? Also have you had warping going on ? & Did you use different brand rotors or pads or both ?? Thanks for any input on that ! I'm not sure if it's mechanics not cleaning hub good & calipers too or it's bad metal composition or caliper design, or their not torquing everything to spec even though it's a dealerships or reg mechanic or DYI
I can't say that we have had warping issues in the approx 250K miles on the Highlander. We have had several calipers seize up though. Maybe yours are dragging ever so slightly causing heat build-up?
@SkylineAcresVA ok I don't have one yet but hearing alot of complaints , don't wanna get it if there's still issues , too many areas that could cause that prob ? Thanks for the feed back
@johnbart8454 I will say, it has been a good vehicle that just keeps going and going

What a beautiful property! I know the campers appreciated such a nice spot. I have a similar thick, low, grassy area under my powerlines that always seems to stay damp. VEVOR Chicken Plucker amzn.to/3CxuLIG Storey's Guide to Raising Chickens (great book) amzn.to/3YUmDcF
We bought one for 500 at auction. Parts are a problem!! They have not made Hesston in 40 years. Parts are only available from junk yards. Also, you need to watch that the bale is rolling evenly in the machine as you go along. It was cheap, What did you give?
I wonder if you're thinking of a different model. I was able to get on Agco's website, and practically every part is available. I just bought a new twine knife for it. I don't know the year ranges of the Hesston, but the Case 8420, which is the same baler, looks like it was made from 1988-2000. Mine has a serial number that starts with 04 (not sure if that's indicative of the year)
I made one about twenty years ago out of a 3" x 10' stick of pvc. At first, I made a bracket for the 3 pt hitch. Later adapted it to fit on the bucket of my front end loader. I also did the same thing you did and clip the seed heads whenever I saw them. You will knock the johnson grass back, a lot, by using these methods. The problem here in GA is that I have a fescue field and the fescue slows considerably during the hot dry months of July and August and the Johnson Grass loves the hot weather. It grows tall and will choke out the shorter grasses.
Since that application, the Johnsongrass was probably eliminated by 80% the next year. I used the wick and clipped seed heads again this year on the remaining 20%. Should be down to almost nothing in the next year or 2
I've wondered how much mine weighed too, great idea!
@@TheTriangle4 Thanks for commenting!

My wife has already mentioned she wants to use it for that as well 🤣
@SkylineAcresVA I just ordered one!!!
👆 Awesome
Link to Digital Crane Scale: amzn.to/3YHe3On
Thanks for your hay weight demonstration with that nice scale. I'm going to order one to use on the farm. BTW, did you deduct the weight of the chain? No big deal.
@christopherjake5610 thank you, I hope it serves you well! Once I had the weight of the chain dangling, I 'zero'd out' the scale. Might have still been a few pounds of chain on the bale but nothing significant.
I had a Hesston 5545 round baler, which made a 4x5 bale. Bought it used, used it for ten years, and sold it for the same price I paid for it. Those are good balers. Very simple, not much can go wrong with them, and parts are readily available. They are not a "fast" baler, as it takes time to stop and tie a bale. But as you said, the advantage is that you are not pressed to get them out of the field the way you do with a square bale. One thing I had to do with my baler was cut all the belts the same length. I had to replace a couple of the belts and the remainder of the belts were stretched. Took the old belts off and cut them to the same length as the new ones. And yes, you need to address the loose chain. What I did with my control box was to attach a magnetic base from one of those nut and bolt trays. This allowed me to set the controller on the top of the fender when I was baling and easily remove it when not in use.
@lkj0822g Thanks for the tips! I'm definitely going to address the chain and I really like the idea of the parts tray magnet 🤜
Video of us using the round baler for the 1st time: ua-cam.com/video/AbqlRMENH7k/v-deo.html
Any idea what the actual weight is? Wondering if my Bobcat Mt100 skidsteer can lift one full 🤔
@anythingadrenaline4515 this one was super heavy b/c it is the taller 330 gallon tote and then it was neatly stacked above the rim. Maybe in the 1,700 ‐ 1,900 lb range? The more common 275 gallon totes are shorter and much lighter. Maybe like 1,200lb or so. Don't have to fill it all the way up either.
What size is your pole barn do you have a video on it
It's a 30' x 50'. I don't have a video on it but it serves us well
Good no nonsense video. I plan on using this on a tractor quick attach system. Thanks for posting.

@@SkylineAcresVA we are between Galax and wytheville
I started with a bale spear, after my 1st season went to a bale hugger. Look on marketplace, makes stacking so much easier. I ran lines from rear remotes to front loader, just unplug when I need rear remotes. I use it on my Kubota L2850 so you could too. Anyway great purchase!!
Thanks for the tip! I will look into them. Right now I am using pallet forks and flipping the bales on end and stacking 3 high. The video coming out this weekend will show my attempt at stacking 😆 Do you stack on end or on the round side with the hugger?
@@SkylineAcresVA on the flat end, less distortion that way. Plus we wrap ours so stacking on flat keeps the wrap in place better. To sell them either need a barn or wrap imho.
@@TheTriangle4 👍 I figured that's what you were doing. And you are 💯 correct about storing to sell.

You need to address the gathering wheels at the front of the baler, They pick up all the loose hay which hasn’t been rowed up and turn the excess hay back into the rows of hay.🇬🇧🇮🇪.
@michaellynskey7124 it's next on the list. I had explained that in the video but I took it out during editing. Most 530's I see, the rubber has come off and they are expensive! People just leave them off! I'm going to try the sidewall of an old tire bolted on there, or something similar.
