Japanese Whisky Goes GLOBAL || Nikka Session Whisky REVIEW
This is the Nikka Session, and it’s Nikka Whisky’s “World Whisky”. This is an interesting idea which likely came about from the new rules around Japanese whiskey, which means some of their old methods of blending international whiskey with Japanese whisky are now no longer allowed be called “Japanese Whisky”.
This is a malt whisky, blended together from malts from Nikka’s Yoichi and Miyagikyo distilleries, along with some malt from the Ben Nevis Distillery in Scotland. This means it’s a little more focused than the OTHER world whiskey from Japan, Suntory’s Ao. If you want to see a video where we put the Suntory Ao vs Nikka Session, make sure to check back next week for that video!
It comes in at 43% ABV and doesn’t say if it’s got colour added or if it’s been chill-filtered. With how light it is, I suspect there’s no colouring, but I can’t be sure
So, let’s get to the tasting notes!
Nikka Session tasting notes:
Nose
It’s light and sweet, with green apple, herbal mint and a touch of minerality. There’s no real peat character, despite Yoichi Whisky supposedly being “heavily” peated. There’s some oak wood, but no oak spice, and a little hint of orange flesh.
Palate
The palate is honeyed, with a touch of bitter oak, reminding me of tart berries. There’s more herbal malt with vanilla, toffee and a light bit of peat. There’s also a little bit of apple, pepper and a touch more peat on the second sip.
Finish:
On the finish, it gets steadily smokier, with more oak, pepper spice and tart green apples which lingers after the sweetness fade.
Overall, I liked this whiskey. It didn’t change the way I look at Japanese whisky, but it’s really nice. It tastes quite consistent, with the three malts working together rather than against each other. I managed to get this bottle at the distillery for about €30, and I think that’s a fair price for it.

I'm a total whiskey nerd and this channel is all about Whiskey, Whisky, Bourbon, Rye, Pot Still Whiskey and Single Malt Whiskey. I'm always on the hunt for the best whiskey and love making whiskey review videos. My passion is for Irish whiskey, but I'm open to looking for the best Bourbon or the best scotch too!
I'm an Irishman, but that doesn't stop me from enjoying whiskeys from all around the world, from Kentucky bourbon to Japanese single malts. I also love making cocktails, especially whiskey cocktails (or whisky cocktails) and really enjoy taking a classic recipe and adding my own twist to it, or making simple, 3 ingredient cocktails

Don't Miss This Riff! || Monte Cassino Cocktail Recipe
Переглядів 12212 годин тому
This is a great little Last Word riff which you should try out! This is a really nice cocktail based on the classic Last Word, which was invented by Damon Dyer in the Louis 649 bar as part of a cocktail competition sponsored by Benedictine. He named it after the Monte Cassino hill outside of Rome where the Benedictine Monastery is located, and it has since spawned a few riffs of its own. I actu...
100% IRISH || Blackwater Full Irish Whiskey REVIEW
Переглядів 18716 годин тому
This whiskey is 100% Irish! This is the Full Irish Whiskey from the Blackwater Distillery, and it really lives up to the name. It’s made up of all the grains allowed in Irish whiskey, all the styles of Irish whiskey, and it was finished in a stout cask for good measure! Blackwater have been distilling for a few years now and they have released a few special single cask releases which have made ...
Simple is Better! || Japanese Honey Highball Cocktail Recipe
Переглядів 104День тому
This is a simple cocktail, but it really highlights the whiskey I’ve used! When I reviewed the Nikka Pure Malt Black, I was wondering what kind of cocktail I should make, as it’s got this sweet, honeyed character, with a strong backbone of peat smoke. So, I settled on a simple, honey highball, as it will balance the flavours of the whiskey, while not hiding any of its delicious nature! For my h...
PURE Japanese Whisky? || Nikka Pure Malt Black Whiskey REVIEW
Переглядів 15414 днів тому
This is the Nikka Pure Malt Black Japanese whisky, and it’s a rich, smoky little number! It’s called a “pure malt” because it’s all malt whiskey, but not all from the same distillery, however, there might be some non-Japanese whisky blended into this one. It is one of a series of pure malts by Nikka whisky, and it is meant to highlight the malt whiskey from the Yoichi Distillery. The Miyagikyo ...
Green Spot Battle! || Which Green Spot is BEST?

Which Green Spot is the Best? Let’s find out! A few years ago, the Spot Whiskey brand released some variations on their classic Green Spot. These came in at a slightly higher ABV and had a wine finish from particular vineyards, in addition to the classic bourbon and sherry cask maturation. This may have been the inspiration for the new Gold Spot Generations, which itself highlighted a special v...

This is a lovely little tropical tiki cocktail with whiskey! I got the idea for trying this recipe when I reviewed the new Irish whiskey from Dingle Whiskey, the Dingle Cónocht on Fomhair. It’s a really nice, easy-drinking single malt whiskey which was finished in rum casks, so I looked through some tropical cocktails with whiskey, and some lists of tiki cocktails with whiskey, and I found this...

Brand new from Dingle! This is the new whiskey in the Dingle Wheel of the Year series, and it’s a tasty little Irish Whiskey! Cónocht on Fomhair, or the Autumn Equinox, is a time in Ireland towards the end of summer, when the days are still warm, but the nights can have a bit of a chill to them. It’s a holiday on the celtic wheel of the year celebrating the onset of winter, so Dingle have chose...
A Legendary Cocktail! || Irish Legend Cocktail Recipe

This is a legendary cocktail! I got the idea for this cocktail when I reviewed the “Legendary” whiskey from the Killowen Distillery, and wanted to find something to match it, and luckily I found this cocktail from the Tullamore DEW Website! This whiskey sour riff looks like it’s got a lot of ingredients, but it’s actually a nice simple whiskey cocktail to put together. Combining apple juice wit...
LEGENDARY Whiskey! || Killowen Kult Irish Whiskey REVIEW

This is a cult whiskey, with legendary status! Killowen are a special distillery, always willing to experiment with new things and perhaps because of that spirit of adventure, they have developed a “Kult” following, with a Facebook fan page evolving into full-on, card carrying group (of which I am a very happy member!). Recognising the Kult, Killowen gave us first dibs on a really interesting p...

Hail To The Chief! || Taoiseach Cocktail Recipe

Hail to the Chief! This is a really nice riff on the classic El Presidente cocktail, and it’s named the Taoiseach. As we’re using Irish whiskey instead of rum, it’s only fitting that we use the word for the leader of Ireland, the Taoseach (pronounced TEE-SHOCK), or “Chieftain” in English. This recipe was created by Aaron Wall in the Homeboy Bar, and he originally used the Redbreast 12 Single Po...

This is a real SHERRY BOMB! Is their new Single Pot Still, finished in PX casks a good whiskey? Let's find out! This week, we're looking at the last of the three new whiskeys from the Boann distillery. While they still release sourced whiskey under the "Whistler" range, this is entirely their own distillate! It's about three and a half years old, and spent about two and a half years in ex-oloro...
Refreshing & Simple! || Japanese Lemon Sour
Переглядів 220Місяць тому
This is a lighter and more refreshing whiskey sour! If you’re in Japan, you will likely see “Sour” cocktails on the menus at most bars and restaurants, but they’re not normally a whiskey sour. A traditional Japanese sour will have a combination of neutral spirit, lemon liqueur, lemon juice, soda water and sugar. This however, is a bit different. I got the inspiration from a restaurant I visited...

Always a good and detailed review. I have seen a few NIKKA around here but have not tried any. thanks
What's your favourite Japanese Whisky?
Sounds like a nice little sipper. Thanks, as always, for the detailed review. Cheers!
Thanks! It really was a nice little blend!
Terrific thoughts on nosing and on your palette, Matt! I just got the smallest bit of peat and quite a bit of vanilla and cucumber! It's too mild for me, overall, but it was enjoyable when I was able to get a bottle. Not complex. But nice to sip. Solid. I agree - nothing exciting! I'm glad I could try it! Really awesome video!! Cheers!! 🙂
Cucumber!? Now that's an interesting note that I'll have to go back and see if I can find it! Cheers Christine!
oh interesting notes. I have not tried this one but a lot of Japanese whiskey seems light. but I love your cucumber note. thanks for sharing. cheers
Just tried this with green Chartreuse and Bulleit rye, it's fantastic! I can see that maybe a tiny bit less of the green Chartreuse would improve the balance, as the yellow did. If you've not tried Bulleit rye you should, it's a great all purpose rye for neat pours or cocktails.
Cheers! Glad you enjoyed it so much! Bulleit is a really solid rye, tried it a few times, but haven't gotten a bottle in a couple of years... Might be time I change that!
Great review!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Agree with you on price thing, I bought it for 52 euros yesterday ( full price ) and the finish on it is the one that got down some points for me. On the nose it is pretty good though
Yeah, the price is really shocking, especially as I was in Japan recently and you can find it for less than €25!
First, excellent close up footage at the beginning! That was a nice touch. Other than hearing you speak on it, I've not ever heard of Blackwater. We'll pick it up and check it out should it ever emerge in our market. This sounds like one flavor merged into he next without any overwhelming transitions. Cheers to ya!
Cheers! Yeah, they're a really small Irish producer, so I wouldn't be surprised if they're not fully available near you, but they are making some lovely stuff!
This looks so good.
It really was!
Finally! I'm Andrew, and yes, you're correct on the SF part. Slainte!
Cheers Andrew! Thanks for the recipe and hope you're having a great weekend!
Fabulous ingredients Matt! I will make this beauty for sure! I’m really looking forward to trying this cocktail! 🍸 Love Benedictine and Chartreuse in a Rye 🍹
Cheers Christine! It was really great!

Thanks to @AGinsfbayarea for this recipe! Whats your favourite riff on classic recipes?

Ooo. Chartreuse! Been a while since I've seen a bottle. :)
Haha! The perks of being in Europe!
Nice cocktail! Monte Cassino is a cool place to visit too!
Hopefully I'll get to visit there eventually!
It's so good
Glad you enjoyed it!
I just tried it and It's VERY GOOD!
It's definitely good, but I'm glad I paid the US price, rather than the amount they charge in Ireland!
That whiskey sounds awesome

Balcones Cataleja 15th Anniversary single malt
Oh! What was so special about it?
@@TheWhiskeyNerd For me it’s complicated, the most unusual whiskey I have ever had. I’m trying to enjoy it, I struggle with the sulfur note from the aged Sherry barrel influence. Just a wild ride.
@@MS-go8dl interesting! Always fun when a whiskey is a little challenging but has parts you like, makes it a bit fun to go back to it repeatedly and see if it, or your palate, changes!
What's the most interesting whiskey you have ever tried?
Nice identification, both of you!
Thank you!
I had no idea that BT was only 40% in Ireland. Going straight to the comparison video after this!
I know! It's such a scam! 😂😂
Yellowstone made it more popular
Ah! Like Lost in Translation did for Suntory whiskeys!
I just picked up a bottle of this. It has cream for day doesn’t it! It’s completely different than what I expected but it is definitely delicious
I totally agree! The more and more I had of it, the more I actually enjoyed it and wanted to keep going back! A nice balance of sweet, cream and spice!
Great walkthrough. Thanks for sharing!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Hey Matt! I hope you and Rose are doing well. This cocktail looks like one that would cost a pretty penny at a great bar; A+. Wanted to let you know that I started my own channel as a spin off from Flour, Eggs, and Yeast so Theresa can concentrate on baked goods over there and our Disney content. I'll keep an eye out for some of these ingredients on my next trip to ABC. - Cam

Just had it tonight which was gifted to me from the duty free airport. Loved it very much.. From India
Cheers! It wasn't 100% for me, but glad you liked it!
This beauty sounds light and delicious Matt!! I will try it for sure if I have any of this Nikka left! I think I do! Fabulous ingredients - not too sweet!! I hope you and Rose have an awesome weekend!! 🙂
Thanks Christine! Hope you like it!
@@TheWhiskeyNerd We made it last night!!! Delicious!!!
Great review Matt. Have a bottle I got when deployed overseas in 2021. Haven’t opened yet. Must try soon.
Cheers Ultan! Hopefully you get a good occasion to open it soon!
What do you think of Nikka whiskeys?
I enjoyed this Nikki Japanese whisky but at $275 Canadian before taxes there are absolutely other whisky expressions (single malt scotch!!) that I would choose over this whisky. Too pricey for what it is - nothing exceptional. Not overly complex. Terrific thoughts Matt! Love seeing a variety of whiskies!! Much care to you and Rose!!
Dang! $275 is far too much! At the price I paid in Japan, it was fine, and I felt it was fairly priced, but not the "international" price
@@TheWhiskeyNerd I'm glad you got a good price Matt!!
love how you review whiskey. Easy to understand
I appreciate that! Thanks for the compliment!
another great one, with hints of winter/autumn spices
Oh yes! Very easy to enjoy!
Hi Mat there was a sale on for jamson crested was 44 euro down to 25 euro so I picked up two bottles because I have had it before and I really enjoyed it
That's great value! And just in time for the holidays over the next couple of months!
Yes true just in time for the Christmas
We get this now in South Africa at 43% but the Malaga casks have been replaced with chestnut casks
Interesting! If I see one with those casks I'll definitely pick it up and see how much of a difference there is!
A great comparison guys, all three are delicious whiskies! The zinfandel cask gives me lactic notes just at the right amount where I enjoy and it's not overwhelming. The bordeaux one is a more safe choice I think where I see more people like it but overall three beautiful whiskies. Cheers guys 🥃
Cheers right back at ya! The Zinfandel definitely had some creamy notes to it, but the influence of the bordeaux won out for me!
What a battle! My favourite would be Chateau Montelena, but You can't go wrong with any of those three.
That's the truth! While we both preferred the Leoville Barton, the montelena was lovely!
Since they are both from the Middleton distillery, just wondering what are the differences in the making process of the Spot whiskeys compared to the Red Breast line?
They don't really talk about it publicly, but essentially, the difference is that they can use different proportions of malted and unmalted barley to vary the base flavour. They also make variations of "light, medium, heavy and traditional" pot still whiskey by changing the where they make the cuts, i.e. they can include more/less of the foreshots or feints or both. So it's likely a combination of those two things. Hope that helps!
@@TheWhiskeyNerd Thanks Matt. Take care.
Picked up a Leo Barton recently on your recommendation and very happy with it, it's what I wish the regular Green Spot was like. Would be great to see you do a similar video comparing those various Dingle seasonal releases
Glad you enjoyed it! And I actually did a video comparing the first year of the Dingle releases, and I'll do another one comparing the second year, then a final video comparing my favourites from both years, to find the best one (in my opinion)
Very tropical vibe for a whisky drink
Green Spot Leoville Barton for me!
We really do think it's the best of the three, and we don't always agree on these videos, which shows how broadly appealing, but fully flavoured it is!
@@TheWhiskeyNerd super expensive here in Chicago, not easily found either
@@MS-go8dl that's a pity
I enjoy the Green Spot with a casking in Quail's Gate Chateau Montelana which might be a Zinfandel. Labels might be different in different countries? Not sure. I don't enjoy the original but I love the release from our amazing wine rich region - the BC Okanagan!! Prefer to the new Gold Spot! I can still find the Chateau Montelana!!
Yeah, they must have had different labels and names over the years, but as long as it's tasty whiskey, that's what matters!
Not yet. But looking forward to it after your description of the taste 😃
Hope you enjoy when you get a chance to try them!
Montelena for me but all lovely.
It's fabulous!
Definitely a improvement over the original!
@@TheWhiskeyNerd 🙂
Leoville-Barton all the way
Same here!
Have you tried the green spot variations? Which was your favourite?
I am not a fan of the classic. There is another one finished in Canadian Quails Gate Pinot Noir casks.
@@DileepB Chateau Montelana and I think this is a Zinfandel wine - bottles might have different names - some with Chateay Montelana and some with CM Zinfandel as far as I know. Fabulous!
