ECM Synchronika - Defective Boiler and Repairs
Hello All,
In this video I go over the repairs I had to undertake after four and a half years of ownership of my ECM Synchronika. The issues I did have were as a result of a defect in the welds of my brew boiler. One testament to getting this machine, is being able to repair it myself (although I am thankfully handy). That was one of the decisions in purchasing the machine, manageable repairs.
Thanks for watching and please let me know in the comment section if you have any questions.

Just so everyone knows, Coffee by Design is a big left leaning liberal company. If thats where you want to spend your money thats fine but you should be aware of it.
good call out, thanks
Thanks for the info. I will be buying all of my coffee from them from now on.
"Hi there, It was after watching your video that I decided to purchase my first espresso machine, the Synchronika, about 6.5 years ago. Up until now, I haven’t experienced any significant issues. In the second year, the +/- signs on the PID panel started to fade, so I emailed ECM in Germany, and they sent me a new PID cover sticker to Turkey that same week. I still haven't replaced the old one yet and continue to use the faded cover. Additionally, the steam boiler gauge no longer drops all the way to zero. I believe the vacuum breaker got stuck a couple of times, which slightly shifted the needle. However, since I'm aware of the situation, it doesn’t cause any problems for me, and I haven’t felt the need to replace the manometer for now. Other than these minor issues, the only maintenance I’ve done so far is replacing the E61 gasket, and while doing that, I decided to upgrade the shower screen to an IMS one for good measure. I also just checked the 3-way T-connector; the plastic one is still in good condition, but I plan to replace it with a copper one when I find the appropriate part nearby. Although there are no major issues, I’m considering doing an E61 rebuild and replacing the steam joystick gasket soon, as it has become a bit stiff, and sometimes it doesn’t close immediately without a little nudge. In light of all this, would I recommend this machine? Yes, I would, to all hobby enthusiasts who have the budget for it. However, I would advise not to set your expectations too high."
If you're allergic to milk then it's most likely from hormones or Type B proteins. Brown cows produce A2 milk. Interestingly, until about 5000 years ago, all cows were A2. Commercially available conventional milk is batched, which means it always contains the wrong proteins as well as all of the other things. Same with wheat and gluten. Why are so many people now allergic to gluten? Gluten is protein, and the surge in allergy coincides with the introduction of GMO crops. Buy organic wheat flour and make your own bread. Bette yet, buy organic wheat berries direct from organic farms and mill your own flour. Your allergy will disappear. But Organic A2 milk, and your allergy will most likely disappear. Worth a try.
I know you posted it a while back but wanted to check if you still have your Synchronika and if it’s been serving you well since the boiler replacement? Thanks!
Hello, I actually shot an update video, wasn't happy how it came out, and haven't been able to reshoot it. I did also have to replace my vacuum breaker valve, as the seals inside it finally let go (7 years of operation). Besides the boiler and just a couple of other maintenance items, the machine has served me well the past 7 years. Finding parts though, can be difficult at times. Clive Coffee at least stocks the boilers, it took MONTHS to get one from Whole Latte Love.
Helpful video. I've got to replace my steam boiler heating element. I have a water softener systems, but my heating element was pretty scaled up.
Try lactose free milk
The temperature is in Fahrenheit ?
Yes it is
Thanks for your review! I was going to buy Synchronica. How is it holding up? any broken parts after 6 yrs?
I have filmed a video for the "6 year update", wasn't happy with it. Need to re-record it. I will try and get this done soon
Yup!, same Machine all same problems 5 years old.. now searching for a steam boiler, cheers for the Vid, Great help Thx.
Crazy. ECM is supposed to be the pinnacle of build quality.
So no scale buildup but the RO creates very aggressive water and leads to rust - which you do have - I suspect it lead to the premature failure of your boiler welds. There's a reason they say not to use an RO for pretreatment to these machines.
So I have an update on this actually. The problem I was actually having, was my water being to acidic. I NEED the RO as I have to inject chlorine into my water (iron bacteria problem), the RO process made the water to acidic, so I was able to add a pH Booster canister (calcite) to the system and now have water closer to neutral pH, also the booster adds some minerals back into the water, TDS 50-100 range now. I went over all of this the first time the boiler failed, and the support team at Whole Latte Love determined it had bad welds. When my water system is serviced every year, the water is tested each time, but it was never tested out of the RO system. I am on a well, so the water will fluctuate naturally in pH, and was coming out of the system to low (6.3). Just had that corrected and now it comes out of the house system around 6.8 now. Will see how this works out.
too noisy
Bulky
Would you get this machine or if budget permits the La Marzocco Linea Mini?
How was the customer service when this issue occurred?
Customer service was helpful, but now you can not get them on the phone as it is all done through a ticket system now. But they are responsive.
You need three hands.
Great review thank you for posting.
Thank you for sharing your experience. Very helpful information.
Got mine in Nov 2020 so just over a year of ownership. The vacuum 'T' valve completely disintegrated behind the group head, probably after only about 5 months of use. This lead to the drip tray filling/overflowing if I didn't keep an eye on it on a daily basis. Replaced the valve thinking this would solve the issue, but the drips were still occurring as well as a hissing/gurgling sound every couple seconds from the top of the steam boiler. Vacuum breaker valve had to be rebuilt with a new O ring , i wasn't able to find a high-temp replacement part locally so had to order from Clive Coffee (which was backordered). Hopefully this is the last of the surgery I need to do on the machine for a while, not too excited about the prospect of doing this every year. I'm also getting a fairly loud buzzing from the pump / motor areas when the brew handle is initially raised, and it's not due to anything rubbing or touching the metal side panels.
…but how it was rusted as the boiler is made from s/s?
The boiler itself did not rust, it was the defect in the weld that rusted.
Nice vid. I see you don’t subscribe to the, don’t drink from the steam boiler… I feel like if you have a water filter setup like you ought to with this machine it’s no different.. maybe purge some of what’s been cycling in the machine, but I don’t see why the steam boiler is any different.
Yeah, I don't see the difference either.
Have you tried lactose free milk?
Actually, yes I have.. it froths quite well and obviously doesn't bother me all that much. But I generally keep away from dairy regardless, but I will indulge from time to time.
Thank you for making such a informational video about this. Looking into buying this soon and this has been very helpful! Keep them coming 😄
Hi, thanks for sharing! would you buy this expresso machine again? It so expensive and should not break after 4 years!
I would buy this machine again. It has a defect in the boiler unfortunately, and now that it is fixed I hope it will run for years to come.
This video scared me considering that I had just ordered an ECM Synchronika online just hours before. I actually cancelled my order, and then spoke to Mark Jefferson (Whole Latte Love) who phoned me. It seems this is the best machine on the market for home use. I turned the order back on, and I'm hopeful that the issues you had have been FIXED by the manufacturer in Milan, Italy, so that these machines are now being sold in a much more reliable condition. Thank you for all your effort!
really? just one video and you already assumed the others would fail too.
@@calvintran8691 this person is stupid clearly and doesn't understand water... however they clearly have money, so I would like to talk to them about their investments, because I manage a commodity pool!!!
I tried to make the point that this was a defect, and it also has not been a common one. My machine was made roughly 5 years ago, and since I have not seen anyone else mention this happening to them since then, I would consider this an anomaly.
@Chad Gregory please educate me on water then. Your assumption that "I have money" just because I bought this machine just shows how ignorant you are. So please explain, in detail, what I don't know about water.
This was a really helpful video. I have the same problem with the T connector, but didnt even realise it could be a problem until I checked the indicators you mentioned. Thanks for posting it!
As I watched the rest of the video - we have so much in common - on a well, whole house water filtration,, and purchased through whole latte love I’m thinking I should send it to them ?
Heh.. yeah, maybe you could, not sure what exactly is causing your issue, but hopefully it is something simple you may handle yourself, like resealing fittings or something like that.
I have similar problems with leaking After 1 year I changed valves Now I have a steam leak and it is popping the electrical breaker Very frustrating
I think a Wemo switch is a great programmable auto on/off option. If works with a wide range of machines, allows for multiple times of day for days of week. Allows on demand control. Voice control from smartphones.
If you have trouble digesting cow milk give oatmilk a try (like the oatly barrista). I think it tastes amazing
Yes thanks, I have already switched to oak milk and it froths up quite nicely as well!
Creme is just released co2
Thanks! Great review!
thanks for the review
Your latte art is almost as shitty as mine!👌🏻
I think that shot ran quite fast, especially considering it wasn't a particularly light roast. Filling two shot glasses to that height (even assuming they're 1oz glasses when they appear to be 2oz each) in 28secs like threatens some mighty sour espresso.
Yes correct. Over the past couple of years, I have since found a local roaster. Now I have fresh roasted coffee and my shots now pour consistently.
Hey there what's the minimum warm up time needed to pull a shot from cold startup? Thx!
No less than 15min-20min. I do have a wifi smart plug so I can have it turn on automatically in the AM before getting up. After 15-20min it is ready to go.
@@hagar852 No, it is 25 - 30 min as for all machines with an E61 group head!
How's it been performing? Any issues now that you've had it for a while? (Assuming you still got it!). You've probably learned by now, tapping with your finger / compressing it that way isn't ideal, you want an even density of coffee ideally, before tamping it down. You can see the edges around as high so when you tamp it down you'll get a higher density of compact coffee in the center, when water is forced through there during brewing, it will find the easiest path to flow through which is around the edges (it's pretty common, they call it a donut extraction) with a naked portafilter you could see it starts out around the edges and eventually works its way to the center. So you get an uneven extraction which affects the taste. Some people use a Stockfleth technique where you kinda use your hand to evenly distribute the coffee, ua-cam.com/video/kTSd8xu81y0/v-deo.html It seems like it can be a bit messy and may waste some coffee so I don't do it. I prefer using a home made needle distribution tool with very thin needles to kinda stir and distribute the coffee evenly before tamping (using a 58mm funnel designed for coffee which sits on the OUTER edge of the basket helps keep things clean too while grinding or stiring). The ECM tamper is actually really nice, it's a good width for a pretty snug fit and I like it's got a thick base which I think helps with your chances of getting an straight (not tilted) tamp, but I found the best way for consistent tamping if you find you do it on an angle sometimes, is to use a self-leveling tamper, pressure calibrated doesn't really matter as much but having it level is important.
Mineral free / Reverse osmosis water is slightly more acidic and I have heard it can be corrosive maybe due to high temperatures as well. I wouldn't think it would do something like this though (could it?) :O I think this machine uses a magnet to sense water level which is pretty cool and doesn't rely on an electrode and will still work with mineral free water as a result. Usually if it's really mineral free water you get more acidic / flat tasting coffee. I'd try maybe adding a little like 1-2 parts bottled spring water combined with 3 parts your regular RO water and see if you notice the difference.
God bless you, saved me days of agony !!!! the blind plug for the newer boiler , ah!
Thank you I have a Gaggia Classic I hope to one day get a synchronika., which I purchased from Whole latte love
Clumpy grinds.
It is from the coffee, when using quality coffee it doesn't clump.
Thank you for your update with the Synchronika! Very helpful!
4 years is a short time for a boiler change. I expect no less than 10 years for such a major repair
I agree... It was a defective weld in the brew boiler, and I hope the replacement can last the mentioned 10 years.
@@hagar852 I just bought a Synchronika online; supposed I wouldn't have bought this machine had I watched this video first. How disappointing to spend that much money and then have to do an expensive repair. I have a Rocket I purchased in Germany in 2011 that is still going strong. Sure hope my new Synchronika will be completely updated!!! I love your videos!
Hopefully this was a rare occurrence, but since getting it repaired (knock on wood) she has been running fine. Yeah it sucked, but I was able to get the parts and repair it. In the world of disposable goods we now live in, I thankfully purchased a machine that can be serviced. Hopefully I can keep this for many years to come.
Great Video, thanks for making it!
Had the same problem on my profitec pro 700 ua-cam.com/video/EurWO8RkdHA/v-deo.html
Sorry this happened to you.. mine got to the point it was bubbling out quite a bit more rapidly than that. Where you able to get it repaired yet?
@@hagar852 yep, I sent the brew boiler only and they swap my parts on a new boiler. I reinstalled the brew boiler myself and I descaled the rest of the machine. I also rebuild the e61 group. Feel like a new machine.
Nice! Glad that worked out! Even having the problem we both had, having the ability to be able to repair it ourselves was a factor in buying it for me. That, unfortunately, came to fruition but gives confidence in the machine being supported with parts and etc.
Thank you so much for sharing your experience! For others who are interested in replacing the tee splitter/connector, you can find lots of stainless steel ones on Amazon for cheap! Just search for "stainless steel barbed tee 1/4 inch" and you'll find it all over the internet. People apparently use them for beer kegs :) Just make sure you get a quality, solid unit, not something that's cheaply welded together. I'm surprised that Profitec/ECM allows that tee connector to be made of a material that's not temperature stable. I bet if they saw this video they may consider changing it in their design. I'm going to immediately replace it on my new Pro 700.
Thanks! Yes I agree, I was also surprised to see what happened to that original barbed t connector. I can't emphasize enough that it literally turned into dust, like it was Thanos snapped out of existence. I wish you luck and enjoyment with your Profitec 700. I really have enjoyed owning mine, and being able to repair it myself relieves the stress of finding a specialist for repairs. One of the reasons I chose ECM/Profitec.
Just the other day something appears to have gone wrong with the stream vent system. That’s the little vent at the lower front of the machine right below the group head. A few days ago it suddenly started venting a continual flow of steam, only a small amount but its continuous. Steam and evaporated water is condensing over the face of the machine as a result and a small puddle forms under the machine during the course of a day. My first thought is that the sensor has failed. I’m waiting on a call back from the supplier and will report back with the verdict. At least its still useable :)
I recently bought a Synchronika and it did not have the two wing nuts on the bottom. I assume the machine has been upgraded and these are no longer used.
Hello John, those nuts were there for shipping purposes either by the vendor I got it from or the manufacturer. Where did you order your machine from? Maybe they were removed already before it was shipped to you? From what I know, the differences in my now 4.5yr old machine and the new ones isn't much. Pid, boiler drain, chassis change for blind basket and steam tip holders, and flow control is you got that model. Everything else is basically the same.
@@hagar852 Hi thanks for your quick response, there is definitely no wing nuts on the bottom of my machine and there is no mention of them in the manual. I googled the topic and found a comment saying they are only fitted to machines shipped to the USA and I am in the UK. Very pleased with the synchronika, after two weeks still trying to perfect an espresso with all the different variables and different beans.
Sorry to hear this. I’ve been shopping & thinking of buying this same machine from Whole Latte Love as well. These machines are expensive. It’s making me second guess buying one now. I would think with only home use & using good water that this machine should last 10 years before you need to start replacing items?? Would you buy it again?
I am having the same thoughts. All the reviews say how well the ECM machines are made. Your issues don’t reflect that at all. Now I am having second thoughts as I have the Synchronika in WholeLatteLove’s shopping cart. Thanks for any thoughts you are willing to share.
One reason why I bought the Synchronika was it was touted as being easier to service than most machines. For the most part, I think that is true, as I was able to do the repairs myself, and for the most part, most items are fairly accessible. Once again, my boiler was defective, and I haven't found anyone else with the issue I had (bad weld leaking through). So I think what happened in my case is not at all common, if that didn't happen, the only issues would have had would have been the barbed-t connector disintegrating (the plastic one I mentioned). Those I know are a common issue, as over time, they just break down and will start leaking. Other than that, my machine probably wouldn't have needed such a big service/repair. Yes these machines are expensive, but are at least repairable if anything should happen. The E61 brew group, over time, will need maintenance done (replacing seals and such) which is common with anything that relies on seals and moving parts. The commercial machine also need regular maintenance as well, but as long as you do the "regular" maintenance of running cleaning flushes here and there, and monitor for leaks, you can prevent major problems. The biggest key to long life of these machines is clean water, proper filtration is probably the biggest contributor to keeping your machine running for many years. Would I buy it again? I will admit, it was disheartening having this problem, but I was able to get the parts and get her running again. I was also able to clean up the inside from the water that had been leaking for some time, so it was good to get her "like new" again. I have looked at other machines, especially some of the newer releases from Crem, Quick Mill, and Bezzera. I watched the videos to see what they look like inside, some have better placement of components, but may require a little more work to remove boilers. I can't speak to those other brands on their reliability as I haven't really researched them, but I was curious what is "new" and "exciting". Sorry for the long response here, but yes I would buy my Synchronika again. Besides the issue I had, I have enjoyed using it (we use it everyday) and it has held up very well other than my defective boiler of course. Hopefully now, I my boiler can last the 10 years you rmentioned!
@@hagar852 Thanks for getting back. & I’d rather have a long explanation than one that is lacking in detail. I’m thinking of getting this. Maybe if I do, I should replace that T splitter now. Or maybe they’ve improved that piece on the newer machines🤷♂️?? Anyways, thanks for the video & your thoughts. It’s a nice looking machine!
Yeah, if you do decide on the Synchronika, I would pop it open and see if it is the plastic t-connector. If it is, then I would suggest the lead-free brass one, and you never have to worry it. One thing to note, not many other machines have the steam pressure the Synchronika now has(2 bar). I didnt think I needed to upgrade my PID to get it, but when I had it all apart I went ahead and did it. It really does make a big difference, and I also went to a 4-hole steam tip. Now the frothing is much faster as well as easier to be more consistent. At least that is my experience. Eventually I will so my 4 year update vid and go over the upgrades I did over that time. Anything that helps with consistency is what I went for.
Thanks for the video, very helpful. Do you know the TDS of your water? I’m considering the Synchronika but the water level sensor is a major concern as I have RO run to my machine. I’m in the 25 TDS range.
What unit of measure is that reference to? PPM? I don't have an accurate reading as I had my water tested when my system was serviced last fall, and the tanks being re-bed threw off the test for TDS. I am on a well and the reading from the well is 290mg/L which is also 290ppm. Sorry I don't have an accurate reading, I will try and get one though.
Thanks for your reply. Sorry, it’s 25 ppm TDS. My tap water averages 400 ppm TDS. I bought a meter from Amazon for $20 (HM Digital DM-1 In-Line Dual TDS Monitor). I have one on my deionized water system too where it shows 0 ppm TDS so they seem to work ok. I was hoping to learn if the 25 ppm TDS from my RO would work with the Synchronika. I’m a fan of the RO for no-scale (as you mention). I performed a big taste test with bottle water (3 kinds) distilled, tap and the whole latte love blend... tested on my wife, two kids and me. Except for the tap water, nobody could discern an appreciable difference so I don’t buy into the hype about RO making bad tasting coffee. So I’m back to trying to sort out if my RO will work with the level probes in the Synchronic.
@@paulclark5437 Did you make sure the brew boiler water was completely changed between tasting different water types? not just the water reservoir. I think the synchronika uses a magnet sensor that float as water level rises / falls. So mineral content shouldn't matter.
omfg dont use RO water
unless you love corrosion!!!!
