Minute Walk in History - Badlands National Park
As start a landscape as most will find on earth, the Badlands, with those limestone pillars rising from the prairie for one hundred or so miles, was once an inland sea that split North American in two. Take a look at how the landscape became lunar, how the variety of fossils, some fish fifty feet length, formed and can still be found. Through a variety of natural videos and ranger programs, you'll be amazed at how different this land looks from almost anywhere.

I do not know if Grant was used to orders being immediately followed. I find this narrative to be false and a common take to simplify things. What Grant was used to was commanding a much smaller Army and a smaller army by its nature will move quicker and orders get netted out easier. It is not like his corps commanders with AOP were worse. Sherman was a friend, but his accomplishments as a corps commander are not that fantastic. McPherson was slow and cautious and had trouble with his attacks. Ironically, his most aggressive and tactically successful commander was McClernand, who he hated and barely talked too. At Chatanooga he did not even give the order that caused the decisive attac k. Grant was also not in command of the army in the east and was going through extra steps for orders to be delivered and executed. Griffin, would end up being commander of 5th Corps by the end of the war. For the AOP and Grant they still held the important strategic crossroads, which was the most important spot on the field, and really were able to get out of the wilderness and the ANV never was able to go on a true offensive again. it was hard and casualty ridden, but the AOP did accomplish getting through the Wilderness and hold the key point on the field to do it. this was all that really mattered from a strategic point of view. I feel very strongly after 40 years of study (i am 50 now) that the AOPs speed and aggressiveness compared to others is humbug and a pure myth. Sherman when leading the combined armies of the west (much more numerous than what grant commanded when out there) did not exactly move that fast himself. In fact, Grant got to Petersburg before Sherman got to Atlanta. so there is that

@americasbesthistory Absolutely! I often think about if they had invested just a bit more and made them all steel frame and Terra cotta instead of wood and staff and had kept all the main "palace" buildings in Chicago, Buffalo, St. Louis, Seattle, San Fran (both 1915 and the Treasure Island one) and all the other world's fairs of the Golden age... they kept most of the buildings, court yards and water features in Sand Diego from their fair and made it a park/Zoo/Botanical Gardens and it is considered the jewel of the city... and it was a smaller fair, imagine what an asset they would be to cities to have Beaux Arts/Neoclassical park districts with museums, botanical gardens, convention centers, markets, etc.... whatever would work there. What a lost opportunity!

Actually, only one building survived the demolition shortly after the Exposition closed. The building you are referring to, although similar in architecture to the Art museum, is the Buffalo History Museum which was the New York State building during the Exposition. There is one other building which survived, and it is the Wisconsin building which was moved to Point Abino in Canada. It is a summer home in a gated community there. I know all this because my husband has always been interested in the PanAm as are others and have formed the PanAm club. On May 2, 2024 from 2:30-4:30pm many members will be at the Buffalo History Museum with some of their souvenirs for public viewing. Come and see if you’d like and talk with some of them.

After recently walking the battlefield, I realized that Cemetery Hill and its 40-50 Union cannon was the real prize on the Union's right flank. Culp's Hill was a fools errand. It was like climbing up a sheer rock wall on a mountain and the Confederate assault was doomed to failure before it began. Easy to say in hindsight but if the Confederates take Cemetery Hill they win the battle- simple as that.
