Hi, I am a former BT technician with an interest in all types of things. I also worked for an American company called Gould, in the UK, formally Advance Instruments. More recently, I have been a coach driver. I am involved in bus preservation, and help to look after these vehicles with a local enthusiast. I enjoy walking, and exploring historic places. I live in the South East of the UK.
HAUNTED BROWNSOVER HALL
Brownsover Hall Hotel is said to be haunted by a former resident known as
'One Handed Boughton', who lived in Elizabethan times. The present building
is the result of a rebuild in 1876 by Sir George Gilbert Scott, replacing the
original hall. Although some of the original outbuildings still exist.

It really is a great day out for young and not so young. This is a re upload, as I spelled Sir John Betjeman wrongly.

I'm a Steve Double U too!
I worked a chr. We had 8 of those beaties.
Having done a canal holiday I can tell you it isn't a great sound when it is all you hear all day. Out in the countryside it would be nice to hear the birds and sounds of nature or even someone at the front asking you a question without having to raise their voice. However on a canal boat all you can hear is the relentless chug of a diesel engine for hour after hour. I vowed I wouldn't do another canal boat holiday until I could rent an electric powered boat. One day I hope that our canals will be free of this dreadful noise and once again return to the quiet places they would have been in the days of horse drawn barges.
@@OpticalMan Very good point actually. I think electric power would work very well on a narrowboat maybe......
Back in the early 1980’s, I was a DJ on my college radio station in California. We used cart decks for station IDs, jingles, public service announcements and station promotional spots. The ones we had were not ITC, but a different make (I never noticed the manufacturer of them). In order to get a passing grade for being on air staff, we had to produce three promotional or PSA spots per quarter which we recorded onto carts. It was a rather tedious process to record and mix the spots on reel to reel tape, then copy to cart. We had a supply of carts in production room to choose from, so if I had found a cart that had a longer recording time, I would record my spot multiple times on a given cart so it didn’t have to fast forward so much after playing. I actually found a set of these ITC 99b decks on eBay that are in working order and even came with the connector cables between the two units. The seller even made a hardcopy of user manual and put in a nice binder for it. And, I also bought the teeshirt through Redbubble here in the US.
@@djm5k Wow both machines AND the connecting cable. That's great, even better with the manual. I had to make my cable and found a manual on Ebay from the USA. Thank you for your comment and congrats on the machines. Built like tanks!!

This is super cool
Wouah, your are amazing. I have one MIni disc Denon, work fine on player, but what he wants to UTOC write, it fails. Real good set up. I am looking for a cartridge reccord machine by the way.
Thank you. Best advice I can give as regards cart recorder is to keep a look out on EBay or similar sites.
Great setup! I would love to see a video where you talk more about your custom mixer project, it looks cool and sounds great! Not a lot of homemade mixers out there.
Thank you very much for your comment. I will endeavor to meet your request.
WOW! Usually when you're just checking some stuff out there is a real lapse in quality but Holy Crap that is a tremendously awesome sound! Fantastic set up although I wish I could buy you an airplane hanger to set up in . . . you deserve it.
Thank you, the camera is a Canon HFG 25 fed by line audio attenuated and fed into the mic input. The mic input can be set to line level in the menu, but I prefer to put a low level in just in case.
I have the Sony broadcast minidisk recorders
I should imagine they are nice to use, being Sony.😊
You cant have enough minidisc players offcourse. Change that 1 or 2 not working are huge. At least thats my experience. Had multiple md players. All broke down. Now im oldskool burning cds. Bought a load of those lightscribes (350). And as player a denon dcd 720ae. Didnt had a single problem anymore. Must say really like those small discs, for recording im just gonna stick to cds.
Thank you for your comment. Indeed you can't have enough.😊
Nice place! I love minidiscs too, but I only have two portable units (a sharp model and a Hi-MD Sony) and like 50 discs.
Thank you. It seems minidiscs are more popular than I thought.

Hey Steve, do you still have the original tapes of this?
I think I do Matt, it is on hi8 format, I believe.

@@stevedoubleu99B That’s amazing are you on Facebook or Twitter? If not what’s the best way to contact you?
@@stevedoubleu99B what is the best way to contact you regarding the use of the video?
Hi Matt. Sorry, I missed your comment as they don't always show up. As far as I'm concerned, you may use the content in the video. Sadly I am not on Facebook or Twitter. My email is stevedoubleu3@gmail.com
Hook of Holland still has two pairs of lights, one red pair on the north bank (actually right by the Stena terminal) and a white pair on the south bank.
I must make the trip and visit the hook. I'm told that the town is a great day out in itself.
In the US, cart machines were used for songs too. Fun fact: when PR&E imported (under their brand) the Sonifex machines in the US, they failed because the motor was not rated to play for that duration and would overheat.
Thank you for your comment.
HI Steve, what cable do you use between the recording amp and the cart machine? I'm looking for one.
Hi, I had to make the cable up myself, as I couldn't find one either. It is pin for pin, so was straightforward enough. Unfortunately, I can't remember what the plugs are called. If I can find out/remember, I will get back to you.
@@stevedoubleu99B I think I found it. It's a Centronics 24-pin connector, 57-30240. My cart machine is an ITC Delta 1, so it might be different for yours.
Nice one. Do you happen to know where I can get the interconnect cable from the recording amplifier (the unit with VU meters) to the playback machine? Looking all over but haven't found it. I haven't seen them on Ebay. I wonder if they are a standard cable of sorts?
Hi, sorry for this late reply. I made mine up, but can't remember what the connectors are called. However, at least it is 'pin for pin' at each end. If I can find out, I will let you know. May be an Idea to enquire at radio stations, as they may have odd ones left over from the 'good ol days'
What a nice wake up!
Wow, the sound of those four Merlin engines, was so reassuring for the people of the home front but must have been terrifying for the unfortunate people who suffered its destructive consequences! Thank you for sharing 👍
Exactly. I just watched a video documentary about Dresden, and I must admit, it brings it home very vividly that this beautiful aircraft is ultimately a machine of destruction.
Such a mighty sound.
For sure. I have enough time to hop out of the tub and run to the back yard to see it. The Mynarski Lanc here In Canada always gives a resounding hello.👍
Hi Steve, I have 2 of these machines but only one slot works properly on each one. Could I pay you to look at these and fix them if you can?
Sorry, only just seen your other comment. If you tell me the symptoms I could possibly advise, but If you prefer, I would be happy to take a look. One point I would warn of, which is not obvious...the solenoids work via bridge rectifiers, DIRECTLY FROM THE MAINS. Bl..dy dangerous if you're unaware. Just thought it was worth mentioning.
Do you repair NAB cart machines for a fee? I have quite a few but many do not work and I can't find anyone to fix them, although many have tried.
Hi, sorry, I have only just seen your comment. I can repair most aspects, or would offer advice based on my own experiences. i.e. with my 3D machine, many capacitors had completely dried up, replacing them brought it to life. I would of course be happy to look at them. Depending on your own experience of course, but they are pretty straightforward as regards technology. Thank you for your comment.
Hi, Any experience with replacing the motor bearing on the later motors, ITC series one? (though they are all very similar) How exactly is it pulled off? any into appreciate. Thanks
Hi Kevin, sorry, I have only just seen your comment. Sadly, I have not attempted a bearing change even though mine are noisy. I imagine it is reasonably straightforward though. Hardest part probably is aligning the motor with the pinch roller afterwards, I believe there was a little tool for this. Thank you for your comment and good luck.
I liked the RP series they was so reliable.
Is there a cycle path anywhere winding onto the top walkway..cheers
Hi, sorry, I have only just seen your comment. As far as I have seen, there is no cycleway without using the road itself. The west access is a rather steep slope (steps all but eroded away) and the east is decent steps. Only the westbound walkway seems to be in use. I would say that the walkway itself is very suitable for cycles though. The path towards Felixtowe is under the bridge, then through a gate so you travel parallel to the eastbound carriageway. (along a footpath) I hope this is helpful.
@@stevedoubleu99B you couldn’t of explained it any better, thanks for that information..you would of thought someone would of at least made some kind of decent track up onto the bridge,I do like the look of the Orwell bridge though..
@@dnvlogs4390 You are welcome. Yes you would have thought better access for cycles would be in place. About a mile along the footpath I mention, there is a little free parking area, so you could walk it maybe. I would urge you to do it, the view is stunning.
It was great fun and a great honour to be asked to film this great ensemble.
Very enjoyable video! 👍 There has been a documentary about Waverley on German TV and in it it was mentioned that the ship does indeed have a rudder and its small size is considered a bit of a design flaw, because the speed above which it is effective is said to be relatively high.
Thank you for that, and thanks for watching. I enjoyed my 'Waverley Experience very much.
I've been looking for years for an nab cart machine
Ebay is a good place, as mine have been purchased on that site, or maybe some radio stations may still have one or two stashed away.
Well presented.
Thank you Dave.
Thank you for this! I’ve been toying with the idea of walking over but was concerned about the noise and the size of the path. I think you’ve persuaded me to give it a go!
Thank you for your comment, sorry for delayed reply. You should do this, the view is stunning. A couple of tips if you do. 1; the bank on the south side is a little steep, so maybe a stick would be helpful. 2; Only the southbound carriageway walkway is accessible. The easiest climb is on the north end where there is a lovely concrete stairway, so you could maybe do it from there and back. Definitely you should do it. Let me know if you do and good luck!
A bicycle is out the question then or is it
The anchorage blocks are hollow inside
Thanks for that info, I had no idea that was the case.
Hi Steve... can you still get servo boards for the 99B.... incidentally I got some vintage buses too... 4 Bristol RE and a tiger....
Hi Bryan to great to hear about your buses. I used to drive Leyland tigers for a company in London called Grey-Green, sadly long gone. Anyway, I think the only way to obtain servo boards is to keep an eye on the auction sites. What I can say is that although the boards went through changes, as far as I can tell, they were designed to be interchangeable. Unless anyone knows differently.
Are these type of machines available to buy in the UK?
Yes, they come up on the auction sites now and then. Be sure to check the voltage and mains frequency, as the motor speed is governed by this frequency. ie USA 60hz and UK 50hz
Great fun.....what a crew.
Missile launcher! United States Navy could convert these container ships and tankers into vertical missile launchers, carrying everything from, cruise missiles, anti-ship missiles, air to air missiles, 20 mm phalanx cannons, torpedoes, conventional and non-conventional missiles or combination of both and these ships could carry a ton of these! What a potent and formidable adversary on the seven seas! Wow! That would be incredible!
I'm working on a Schulmerich Magnabell. I replaced the rubber tension wheel and now it won't stop playing after the song ends. If your not familiar, it is a continuous play cart. Any advice on what may be wrong?
Hi Mark. I googled the machine and it looks fascinating, not having seen one before. I imagine it will play any recordings, but optimised for bell sounds perhaps? Anyway, after giving this some thought, assuming there is some kind of electro magnetic device operating the pinch wheel, it may need a little adjustment, as it could be sticking 'on' due to residual magnetism. Maybe there is a gap that needs to be restored so it releases when it should when de-energised. Hope this helps, Mark.
Hi, Steve. I'm from Brazil and I really like your videos
Thank you very much Fabrício. Best wishes from UK.
Nice video!
Thank you very much.
The trains you showed were Javelin trains which only operate in UK They have a top speed of 140mph. The Eurostars do go up to 160mph and have a top speed of 186mph which I think they can now run at in UK on some sections of the line. The new Eurostar trains are faster, up to 200mph in France. Good of you to report the open gate You are right you would never hear one of these trains in time to get off the track. That free ticket would be very nice, if only.
Thank you for that. As you have probably noticed, I am not an expert on railway stuff. Had to report the gate as I thought it was my duty to do so. Thank you for your comment, cedercam.
@@stevedoubleu99B I worked track side many years, not in this area, and even 100mph looks fast. I did not know you could walk across this bridge so you told me something I did not know., I would love to see these trains passing in real one day. I have been on the Eurostar through here a few times and the bridge is crossed in no time even though it is so long, around one mile I think.
Ah well at least you got to see her You could of gone to Clacton and not seen anything. If you ever get a chance to go on her take it. The engine room is fully open to the public and has one of the largest most powerful steam engines still working
She is a beautiful little ship. This is the first time I have seen her 'in person' and I was not disappointed. I shall indeed book when the next opportunity arises. Thanks for watching and commenting.
The original Medway Bridge? I would have thought that was the one the Romans built downriver!
Of course that's very true. What I should have said was the original of this particular set of structures.
Brings back memories. I worked at one station that served as a network head-end for several stations and we had three of these side by side, and three SP decks (single decks). The three triple decks were used to send commercials to three time zones, while the SP decks were used for music only. It was wild. You'd have to load the EAST spots in deck one, the CENTRAL spots in deck two and the WEST spots in deck three; then pray all the spots timed out right for the rejoin to music. They finally gave up the network feed and we got to use the triple decks all for music and spots (all local by that time). Fun memories. The relays are also used for SECondary and TERtiary tones to trigger other things. We used SEC tones to trigger the next deck, like if you had three songs in a row, you put a sec tone at the end of the song where you wanted the next song to start. Ive also seen the TERtiary tones used to alert the board operator that there was ten seconds left on the currently playing spot or song. Those tones were laid on the CUE track--which had the 1K tone that stopped the cart once it had played. The TERtiary tone was 150Hz and the TERtiary tone was 8KHz, I think. Thanks for the video and memories!
Thank you Jeff. I have never worked in radio, my interest is more as a hobbyist, being impressed by the superb build quality etc. It's great to hear of real experience such as your own. Thank you for your comment.

ELSA was Erase Locate Splice Azimuth. It controls the functions of erasing the cart, setting the record head azimuth for optimum performance, and locating the splice. Would love to see a demo of the erase, azimuth adjustment and locating splice on a blank cart. Thanks for the memories!
Thank you Jeff, I will try to set up that demo today. I'm not sure the azimuth works, but all the rest does.
Just uploaded a video demo of ITC machine which may be of interest.
I've went their 2 weeks ago and the eurostars are so fast, I can feel vibration on the ground when they pass
Great video, very informative for anyone who's sailed from Harwich. It's such a shame the ferries to Holland are the only ones left nowadays, nice ferries though they are.
Thank you so much for that. Yes the Stena ships are quite superb.
The solenoid is likely binding. I just worked on a 1987 version of this and 2 of the three solenoid plungers were binding and would not release. had to sand about 1/2" and polish and wax them and now they work perfectly.
Thanks Kevin, I haven't touched the solenoids so that makes sense.
