Hunt for the Ivory Billed Woodpecker, The largest of the woodpeckers north of Mexico and the third largest in the world, the Ivory-billed Woodpecker was a bird of old-growth forests in the southeastern U.S. and Cuba. Destruction of its forest habitat caused severe population declines in the 1800s, and only very small numbers survived into the twentieth century. It was thought to have gone extinct in the middle of the twentieth century. The bird was rediscovered in the "Big Woods" region of eastern Arkansas in 2004, but has not been relocated since.#enviormental #woodpecker #birds #animals #ivorybilledwoodpeckers #rarebird #endangeredspecies #birdwatchingworld #extinctanimals

The Fascinating Connection Between Woodpeckers and Indian Drumming
Переглядів 14214 днів тому
A drum ceremony takes place at the Indian mound in the swamps of Louisana. Both myself and Raechel believe we heard what is called a double Knock. After hours of studying the audio files, it was determined that my microphones were directional and were pointed 180 degrees away from the sound. Nonetheless, after hearing what I heard and having Raechel substantiate it, I now believe there are Ivor...

Thank you! It is all a work in progress and an attempt to get some funding.
Strong evidence, imo. While maybe not conclusive, it's definitely a good sign. Keep up the good work... and by the way, hunters, please, DO NOT shoot at large birds unless you can be SURE it is not an ivory bill -- thank you!!
Yes lots of evidence but it's that darn burden of proof that keeps it all from acceptance.
Honestly there are so many pileated woodpeckers on my familys land there could be ivory billed one in there and we wouldnt even know it, i didnt even know about the ivory bill till i was in my 20s lol where im at we got around 1000 acres and our neighbors collectively have around 6000 acres plus state land isnt far away and none of all that is farmed other than about 50 acres which is corn fields and some fenced in elk so who knows
I have been told that the two do not play well together. But it would be so cool to see both at once.
Really hope you guys find it one day!
I hope anybody finds it! And we will keep trying as well.
@@Ivory-BilledWoodpeckerBu-en3wx if I get to do a study in other countries in a few years for my school I’m gonna see if I could maybe travel to Florida and try and see how you guys go at work and learn about the ivory billed woopecker! Still in highschool though lol
@@jurassic_hobbyonmyaltaccou3878 Study hard and apply yourself! It will pay off down the road!
I was very happy to hear and see an ivory-billed woodpecker in 2018 near Enterprise, Alabama not far from the Choctawhatchee River.
I'm jealous! I have only heard a double knock but I have never seen one yet!
I will look for more subscribers for you, For now my family!😅Greetings from Costa Rica 🇨🇷
Awesome! Thank you!
What camera system do you use for your professional work?
My main camera is a Sony A7RIII, I also have a Sony A6500 as aback backup and we use DJI action Cams for head-mounted video at all times. This way if we see one at least the head cam will capture it.
Contact Colossal Biosciences, the same company behind reviving the woolly mammoth, dodo, thylacine, and northern white rhinoceros also wants to find the ivory-billed woodpecker. They would love your assistance in locating this lost species!
I am getting my family to subscribe
That would be awesome and we would be so thankful!
Have you considered contacting Colossal Biosciences? They recently announced a project to rediscover or revive the ivory-billed woodpecker.
I have not but I will be checking them out today. Thank you!
Where can I join the meetings they do via Zoom?
Go to Mission Ivorybill on Facebook and you can join in the meetings there!
NOBLE CREATURES DESERVE NOBILITY
I agree!!!
I was so happy to hear and see one in 2018 not far from the Choctawhatchee River.
That's awesome!!!
Have you considered using playback audio of their call to maybe attract one to your location? This has been used in the past to help locate birds.
Yes many folks have tried this method including Cornell when they were searching.
Have you considered reaching out to the same team that rediscovered the black-naped pheasant pigeon/auwo in 2022? If they can find a bird that has been lost since 1882, I am sure that they could find a more recently lost species.
I have not but thank you for the suggestion, great idea!!
Everytime someone claims to see one in recent years they usually: 1. Already believed the Ivory-billed still exists (confirmation bias) 2. Are not adequately able to distinguish it from Pileated (mistaken) 3. Are not even in the historic range (uninformed) 4. Appeal to the potential of its existence (cope) The data points to its extinction. Your efforts would be better suited helping any of the known endangered and threatened birds on the continent
You have a very valid point! But Im more of the Burden of Proof guy so that the same things would prove either existed. There is currently no definitive burden of proof parameters defined!
@@Ivory-BilledWoodpeckerBu-en3wx I'm confused by what you think "Burden of Proof" means. There haven't been any sightings that meet the burden of proof needed for Ornithologists to say it's still around.
@@hairiestwizard I do not believe the feds have a defined burden of proof. Is there a defined burden of proof for Ornithologist?
@@Ivory-BilledWoodpeckerBu-en3wx any physical evidence: feathers, call recordings, photos, nesting cavities, eggs
@@Ivory-BilledWoodpeckerBu-en3wx Who are the feds exactly? Do you think this is a conspiracy or something? Burden of proof for an ornithologist should be the same as for any other zoologist. You don't get to claim the bird is still extant when you have absolutely zero proof.
As far as I am aware, the only other woodpecker bigger than the Ivory-Bill was the Imperial. Whats the other?
The Great Slaty! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_slaty_woodpecker
@@Ivory-BilledWoodpeckerBu-en3wx if you read the wiki article correctly you'll find that the Great Scaly is THIRD largest after the Imperial, then Ivory-Bill. It is only the largest if you count the other two as extinct.
It's too late. They are long gone.
More than likely but there are still confirmed sightings but no true visual proof!
@@Ivory-BilledWoodpeckerBu-en3wx I think you mean unconfirmed sightings. They are misidentifications.
@@dogtoddy No, not the people I have interviewed! Just no visual proof.
@@Ivory-BilledWoodpeckerBu-en3wx they are mistaken.
@@Ivory-BilledWoodpeckerBu-en3wx If there are any, it would be easy to deploy Audiomoths and record their vocalizations. They had a very distinctive call note. Everyone always focuses on photographic evidence. Sadly, I believe that the species is long gone.
I was very happy to hear and see one in 2018.
Im jealous!
All the evidence presented in recent years is extremely sketchy and ambiguous. For the evidence to essentially retreat into the distance as the number of birders with powerful cameras and the use of remote electronic audio sensing has exploded is as close to confirmation of extinction as we're going to get. It's a sad fact that a lot of people don't want to accept. But the evidence strongly argues that they are, in fact, extinct, and have been for many decades.
I agree with you! But Im all about what is the actual defined burden of proof that would show an animal still lives?
@@Ivory-BilledWoodpeckerBu-en3wx An unambiguous photo
Very nice and informative
Thank you! Fingers crossed there can be proof and then protections!
@@Ivory-BilledWoodpeckerBu-en3wx welcome
i wonder how it feels like to go there and feel that
Its brutal enviorment and not easy to get from point A to B. The hurricane has made it a giant horizontal forest in places. There are no trails so it's all gps and compass navigation.
A part of me hopes they’re so expertly hidden to be safe from us forever 😢
I agree! But unless we get some protected lands I believe they are doomed to man's greed!
Thank you. I saw my 1st Pileated Peckerwood today in my backyard - I thought it was a dinosaur - there was something about it's flight pattern that was mesmerizing. And his hair is very rock and roll. Beautiful bird. As I understand it the flight patterns difference is that the Ivory Billed flies like a duck when viewed from below? Is this true? Might help when the white markings are murky due to the speed of the flight pattern. Cheers man!
I have not seen one yet but have heard they fly very fast and have to purge speed to land. So they do an upward approach to land on a branch rather than a direct path such as the pileated.
I became fascinated in this topic after seeing a very large woodpecker-looking bird that flew more like a buzzard, opposed to how a Pileated darts about in 2018. I had no idea what I was looking at, and I still am not sure. I live about 30 miles north of Gainesville in a very swampy rural area near the Santa Fe river. I found out that such a bird did exist but was extinct. I have been looking for it ever since. Besides some similar kent calls that I can not confirm I have no evidence, but I will never stop looking.
That's awesome! Keep looking, we always have head cams on now just in case we see one. We bring photo gear too but the head cam will hopefully capture what out eyes see. Please pass along any updates as you continue to search!
How many people are looking for it on your team?
Small team of two but large community of many so we compare notes and observations in hopes some finds a hot zone. Then we concentrate efforts to that area.

Thank you for posting this and thank you for your dedication to the project. I want to believe the i-bw is not extinct. I refuse to believe that rednecks with shotguns can eradicate a species whether it is i-bw or passenger pigeon. It is logistically too farfetched. Maybe disease. On another note, I suggest you not mention the war between the states as a spot on the timeline because soon you'll have to field distracting nonsensical claims that racism caused the birds' demise. I wish you the best and I hope that one day you find irrefutable evidence on a bird.
I hope the Ivory BIlled Woodpecker is still alive. Good luck and i hope you find it 👍👍👍

They are extinct.
Some folks believe they are not!
@@Ivory-BilledWoodpeckerBu-en3wx some folks believe the Earth is flat.
@@dogtoddy Yes but they to have to prove it is flat or round!
There was a sighting with video proof in 2022. Considering that a bird similar to this was rediscovered after being presumed extinct for 180 years in the same year, the ivory-billed woodpecker still being alive in remote regions of swamps or forests does not seem too far-fetched.
@@Daralexen the video is low quality and could easily be another more common species. If there was a population they should have been able to relocate one and get good evidence. Dozens of people have been looking for the Ivory-billed Woodpecker for decades. The other bird you mentioned wasn't even being searched for at all. It was accidentally rediscovered in a rainforest in Borneo. It makes sense that a much smaller bird that nobody is looking for would go unseen in a rainforest in a part of the world where there are fewer cameras and people didn't even know the bird existed.
They are extinct.
The Feds have not made that final determination yet!
@@Ivory-BilledWoodpeckerBu-en3wx that doesn't mean anything. Bachman's Warbler has been extinct for decades and the USFWS didn't delist it until last year.
@@dogtoddy My project is on the Burden of Proof! So how do you prove to the feds it does exist if evidence is found?
Id guess its extinct, dont bother me tho if people want to make informative videos and keep looking for em just in case
Anyway, I seem to have a "gift", like God brings them to me? Once I was carrying my 3 year old grandson on my shoulders and prayed the Lord would show him a hummingbird. Before the words were out of my mouth a hummer appeared hovering for 2 seconds 15 ft in front of us Instantly. I would really like to get to Florida. I think that is a great place to see the Ivory Billed. If you read all this, THANKS!
I've saw the Elegant Trogan in the Chiricahuas 3 minutes down the canyon trail! Followed for 15 minutes. Got the Tropical parula at a campground in the Davis Mountains. My other daughter spotted it first
I have done endangered species surveys on the Golden Cheeked Warbler and Black Capped Vireo. Found a Golden Cheeked nest very first transect, feeding babies! Took the others back to location to see them. Found 2 black capped video nest. Took my daughter to Lost Maples in central Texas and she found a black capped on the nest in 3 minutes. Right out of the car! The male was on the nest. Them we went uphill to where there were some mature junipers mixed with Spanish Oak (Red Oak) and live Oak. We saw Golden Cheeked fledglings being fed by the parents, all in an hours time
