    thats still quite allot of whip, what i dont get is who thought compression was a good idea ? when tension used be aware you need to change out your bearings , to trust bearings not only axial. or you will destroy them in no time. nice video anyhow !!

    I have one of the very early 1000mm x 1000mm Workbees and, being a cheapskate, I don't want to scrap the existing lead screws for ones only a few millimetres longer to allow tensioning the lead screws with a clamp on the "free" end. I plan to drill and tap this end of each lead screw and locktite a 14.9 grade M3 stud in. This will allow me to tension the lead screw fairly accurately because the tension can be obtained by stretching the lead screw by a well controlled amount using the fine pitch of the stud. For a 1000mm lead screw I estimate we need of the order 0.2mm of stretch to obtain around 100kgf tension in the lead screw.

    Hi Sean, Purchased your air assist drag chain recently and need some help or suggestions. I thought that your drag chain could work but my K40 already has a drag chain installed for a red dot guidance system and my laser nozzle mounting plate is different. I would have to stack your chain on top of the existing to make it work and then it's too high. Before I return via Etsy, any suggestions??

    Been updating my k40 and the bed is something I was looking into. 100mm Got a scissor lift but it was wonky and took away too much space beneath it. Was looking at belt raising contraptions and they also seemed to loose space and have problems with bolts coming through in useable bed space. This is an awesome simple idea that is most probably faster for known thicknesses. This was worth a subscribe.

      Its a couple of rectangles with a slot in them. Takes 5 minutes to draw in inkscape or a similar drawing program. If you are laser cutting and engraving, you'll be designing parts that are massively more complex.

    just remember this laser was not made for the high street, it was made for one purpose to churn out rubber stamps all day long, thats why the bed size is so small, it is only since we laser enthusiasts have got hold of it and bastardised it has it become and work entry level home c02 laser.. My bed is now 1 metre square to give an example.. I completely disagree however with your comments on honeycomb parts and thats probably because your extraction system system is not good enough for what you are cutting, you need to throw away the chine fan, install a proper suction outlet with a metal tube and install an larger fan that will suck all the smoke an air out of the chamber, there is a calculation that you can do to ensure that the air sucket in is equal to the air being sucked out, Its important that you work to this to clear the smoke, the honeycomb beds, are lighter, they allow the cut to properly cut and that is through the bottom of the wood, most people thing its on the top but its not it happens at the bottoms, if you do not have a honeycomb bed that smoke can not escape and will stain the wood, you also need a powerful air assist, this helps put out minute fires that can happen on the top and assists with the cut. Finally you should check your inlet outlet calculations to make sure you have enough coming in to let whats going out correctly, thats why their are holes all over the K40, they are air inlet holes. If you have patched them up or use a solid bed then you may well need a smoke assist as well from the front of the laser that pushes smoke to the rear and out of the outlet. If you take some time to look at larger commercial lasers you will see they all have honeycomb or raft beds to allow smoke to be sucked out of the bottom of the piece of wood you are cutting as that is when the cut occurs not the top of the wood. Have a play with a honey comb one and upgrade your extraction and youll see what I mean.

    • @seanmartin8770

      Legos sound like a great idea. There's a difference between a user and someone who just wants to play with the machine. I'm definitely a user and it sounds like you are too. I currently have it in a garage, but I tend to watch the temperature. The garage is insulated and attached, so typically won't go below 40 deg. If I'm concerned I turn on the pump and plug in a aquarium tank heater. These days in Colorado there's only a few days a year when it drops to a point of concern.

      thnaks..i prefer diode lasers since they are low to zero maint.and much bigger engraving area....c02 lasers are more powerful but are high maint high cost...and temp sensitive..i love my 5w diode laser..its way bigger area 600mmx550mm...and i do mostly light engraving in wood is all..i boought the ebay k40 becasue i got a good deal at $200 new shipped...but im not sure im going to like it since i cant use it in the garage due to temp well below 20f during winter..and would crack the costly laser tube for sure....i would never use a laser indoors..fumes too toxic...my diode is in garage and works fine..temp doesnt matter at all since its not water cooled like c02...if i cant use it in the garage i may have to dump the k40 on someone else.

    Wow. I actually ordered and installed a new 1500mm ball screw, knowing that the original had a slight bow to it when it was installed. Bad wobble if I pushed it much beyond 250IPM. I was able to achieve well over 100IPM faster with the new screw, but only for a couple of days, then the wobble returned, mysteriously. In the process of troubleshooting the issue, I stumbled upon this video. Since I designed and built my machine, it was easier for me to introduce tension on the axis. What happened? when I loosened the BK12 mounting bolts and pulled on it to add tension, it came right off! The Jesus clip that was supposed to be holding that end of the screw fixed had fallen off, which likely led to the wobble in the first place. I replaced the clip, tightened her up and kaboom! No more wobble! Now I need to get better Jesus clips... Sincere thanks and best wishes!

    • @joppepeelen

      well tension and temperature might give you more or less woble over time and broken bearings .. since they are stressed non stop

  • @wernerboden239
    @wernerboden239 3 роки тому

    Thanks. The clamp was a great idea. I just moved the gantry to the center of Y and then pulled the lead screw by hand to get a slight tension. You are right, btw: Workbee does supply longer lead screws in their V2, with 'Tingle Tension Extensions' is what they call them. I might order longer lead screws and put some push bearings on the outside. Regular bearings are not supposed to handle axial forces.

    The change of the bearing to the outside of the endplates is a good idea but with the tension applied to the roller bearing in the "wrong" direction will cause the roller bearing to fail quickly, it may be a advantage to place thrust bearing between the roller bearing and the collar. To minimise the dust to settle in the open thrust bearing i made large washers with dense felt that fit snugly over the thrust bearings

    What could it be if I have the opposite problem? Instead of it moving back and not stopping, every time I turn it on it moves the gantry forward towards the front of the machine about 4 or 5 inches and then stops. No matter what position its in... Eventually it hits the limit at the front and grinds just like yours did, but at the front of the machine... Thanks

    • @seanmphoto

      I think if you are in compression, 1.5m is pretty unusable. If you are putting the srews in tension, you are probably OK at the longer lengths. You will likely find it necessary to apply a greater tension preload and will need thrust bearings.
