    Why not use titebond 3 in case the paint fails due to damage or lack of maintenance?

    • @deanvandress4693
      @deanvandress4693 4 дні тому

      @@joewoodchuck3824 good question. TB3 is much more expensive. Plus, my research says that paint doesn’t adhere to TB3 as well as it does to TB2.

    • @joewoodchuck3824
      @joewoodchuck3824 4 дні тому

      @deanvandress4693 I know it costs more, but I was supporting water proof vs. water resistant. I didn't know about the adhesion issue. That's certainly a strong consideration. But to keep it in perspective no paint company recommends painting over adhesive to begin with. Hopefully most of the glue stays underneath the canvas anyway.

    • @deanvandress4693
      @deanvandress4693 4 дні тому

      @ good points, and to be honest, this is my first time doing poor man’s fiberglass. But, from my understanding, the very chemical properties that make TB3 “waterproof” are the exact properties that cause paint adhesive failures. The TB3 doesn’t know that the wet paint isn’t just water. It rejects anything liquid. If I recall high school chemistry properly, TB3 has less covalent bonds for the paint molecules to attach to. Maybe someone with more experience than I can shed light upon this.

    • @joewoodchuck3824
      @joewoodchuck3824 4 дні тому

      @deanvandress4693 Sounds like you have more knowledge than my own simplistic views. The overall success of tb2 is certainly a strong consideration anyway. I concede. 🙂

    I have also heard you can sand and fill the final result to get it super smooth but I havent tried it yet. Maybe in the future I will. If the poor mans fiberglass ever fails, I will just peel it and use the camper as a mold to make fiberglass shell.

  • @AaronHendu
    @AaronHendu 5 днів тому

    Also...a current latex "clear" coat experiment...a transparent base...it is the base they use for mixing colors that cant be made easily with opaque white base. I havent done it yet, but gonna try it in the spring. I bought it but havent got around to it yet. It will be a bit foggy compared to typical clear coat. I also did several tests of aerosol solvent sprays on top of the latex+canvas with great results. Rubberized undercoating works great on top of it. I did the entire underside of my camper in thicker foam between floor joists, and covered it all in the poor mans fiberglass, and then coated it all in the rubberized undercoating. It worked awesome.

  • @AaronHendu
    @AaronHendu 5 днів тому

    The trick to it is never stretching the canvas or it will want to pull out of creases and whatnot. I am on about to have my ebike camper.go through it's second Canadian winter. No damage after nearly 2 years of being outdoors in the sun, rain, snow, etc. I did buy a nice golf cart cover for it but it is a bit loose and I don't trust it in the wind. Gonna modify it for a better fit but it will probably be outside all winter without the cover again. I do go and regularly sweep the snow off of it. But I figure with a repaint every two years, it should last quite awhile.

    • @AaronHendu
      @AaronHendu 5 днів тому

      I used rigid foam board though instead of wood...there is a wood skeleton / frame, but the rest is that pink rigid foam board. Fully sanded so it glues up well. Also...Gorilla glue was the cheapest wood glue with decent amount of water resistance...it is all I used and it has been holding up very well so far.
