XS650 Hanging idle. No pods test run
Переглядів 8499 років тому
xs650 test ride with no pod filters fitted . Attempting to find cause of a hanging idle when engine hot. Internal lip on the pod filters is not the cause of my hanging idle problem . High Idle will reduce to1200rpm when the throttle shaft lever is pressed down firmly but it rises back up to 2500rpm when released

XS650 BS38 Carbs. Idle too high. Slow return of idle
Переглядів 22 тис.9 років тому
A high idle that is slow to come down is generally due to a weak mixture. Weak mixture may be due to a too small pilot jet and fitting pod air filters but is more often due to an air leak on the inlet around the stubs or worn butterfly spindle bushes or butterfly disks leaking around the edges when fully closed Centering the butterfly disks in the venturi to reduce excess air weakening the mixt...

That very well may be my issue on my bmw r75/5, thank you, I'll see about that.
I have a '77 Honda cb550k3. 4 carbs cleand, renewed, with stock parts.Main jet, needle jet,(groove set to middle position on the needle) new mixture screws(set to factory setteings 1+1/2 turn out).New intake tubes, airfilter.....Idle with choke is ok, but as I rise RPM it does not drop right at once after relesing throttle.Only Very very slowly.Carbs sincronized before reinstalled.THX
Have u fixed it ?
Just had this issue and your video saved my bacon. Thank you sir for your time and knowledge 😉
you're very welcome ,glad it was helpful, thank you for your message it makes it all the more worthwhile.
Your a great help as I put a clutch in my SPECIAL. thanks alot
thanks for the feedback ....its good to know that the videos are still being useful.
9yrs later I thank ya mate🍻
Definitely the mark on the far left
no s*** Sherlock ...........I think I pointed out 10 years ago 1st post below
This is the best mouse I ever had and it is still working!
Any help would be greatly appreciated I have a 83 Suzuki gs550l with the Dual CV carburetors and I am having issue of runaway it idles at cold start up somewhat okay A little choppy but okay but when cold if you give it some throttle it just runs away at 5000 RPM Full Throttle the cable is not sticking, I have adjusted the idle screw in the middle till it wasn't even touching the throttle linkage anymore so it's not that but as it warms up if you start it it just goes straight to 5000 RPM I'm going to double-check a few things this weekend before I take it out and tear it apart but just wanted to see if somebody knew what could cause that in this type of carburetor I was told recently to clean the Jets which I do plan on doing but I just don't think that's it and yes this bike does have a vacuum petcock which one of the things I'm going to check is to make sure everything is tight on the vacuum lines just in case that's it but when it idles real high I can use the choke as a somewhat throttle at half choked it calms somewhat down at close to full choke it dies I've been doing a lot of research over the last week even going through the owner's manual and service manual I bought for this like and I have a few ideas of what it could be but wanted to see if somebody on here have a lot more experience than I do with this type of carburetor oh, I already got a hold of the manufacturer that makes the carburetor and they said Jets as well but to me it's just not making sense why the Jets if they were clogged the bike wouldn't run right or run that high
sorry didn't see your post as this channel is not monitored regularly. The symptoms you describe are of a very lean mixture and when you told me that the throttle runaway is reduced by giving the idle mixture more fuel.....well that clinches it. You need to increase the amount of fuel to air ration in your idle circuit. Either by adjusting your idle mixture screw ( depends on type of carb), or by fitting larger idle jets. My recommendation would be to buy some pilot jets of the next 2x sizes up from your existing jets and try them. You will need to warm the engine up and then adjust the idle speed and idle mixture screw until your idle is even at around 800-900rpm . Then rev the engine and make sure that the engine speed responds immediately with no bogging or misfires or hesitation. If you still get the same issues then go up to the next idle jet size and try again. With the CV carbs it is important to make sure that your diaphragms are not leaking or holed , ( check out my other videos )
I'm pretty sure the solenoid is gone on the 90 S2 I'm working on. Just getting the dreaded clicking noise when I hit the key. Gonna crawl back under it this afternoon to test it.
sorry this channel no longer monitored regularly. I'm sure you have the problem fixed by now. Sometimes the starter can jam and give the clicking solenoid problem. Always worth putting the car in second gear (ignition off ) and rocking the car back and forward to check for a jammed starter first before removing it.
@@blimeyolriley.no problem. Yes got it fixed. Thanks
Is any way to add a electric gear selector indicator to this engine?
Wouldn’t the mixture too rich cause the same issue ?
Gosh I wish my cat would eat raw
Are you giving him the meat straight from the fridge ? cats need to smell their food so you might find if you leave the meat out until it reaches room temperature so your cat can smell the meat and cut it up fine you cat might show more interest .....
Why is this mirrored. It's messing with me
Super helpful, thanks
thank you for your positive feedback its much appreciated.
Awesome thanx...huge help
thank you for your positive feedback Leon its much appreciated
Mine tries to throw me off in first gear. It almost jumps it over revs then grabs. It'll do that right away in first gear. I'm gonna try this.
Thanks. Had sluggish butterfly return after separating and cleaning the carbs (v4) Sprayed all springs and spindles with carb cleaner which restored the snappy action, however the issue is slowly returning. Will try your butterfly reset trick! 👌🏻
Brilliant
Please help, I’ve been working on a 1990 Porsche 944s2 for the last few weeks, bodywork and repaint. The battery was disconnected for maybe a week or so while the work was being done. Now after all repairs the car cranks but won’t start, everything to me points to the original factory immobiliser not reading the little fob next to the ignition barrel. Can you lend any advice if possible as I’ve no idea where to begin to fix this issue? Thanks
Thanks for this. My keys got wet for my S2 and my car didn't want to start. Think this will be my job today.
you're welcome. if you still can't start the car let me know on my other channel ua-cam.com/video/IwJHK6Cp-kE/v-deo.html and I'll take you through the troubleshooting sequence to find the fault. I don't monitor this channel much now.
Thanks, now i know whats problem with my carburettor

Proper pilot screw adjustment & idle to fine tune. My did same thing.
My kitty is 11 and has hyperactive thyroid .I cant afford much for my cat. Is cbd an option? Can anyone help? my cats my dearest best friend, she's been by my side when I had no one and I love her. I cant have kids and she's my baby. Can A certain diet or certain cat food help ? I cant afford surgery :(. I want to take a holistic approach and possibly the radioactive treatment if I can afford it. Any tips? Im so sad.
My understanding is radioactive treatment, will provide a cure. The claim is it's not cheap, I don't know how much. If your cat is you baby you must do it. Start a go fund me on Twitter. Ask vet it you can pay a little at a time.
Recently my cat is diagnosed with hyperthyroidism and congestisted heart (?). What about the bacterias in roh meats?
cool trick, have to save this video if i at some point have to do this to my bike
Final adjustment of the clutch screw and lock nut I do after riding the bike to heat and expand the motor/trans unit then while the motor is still hot and idling I adjust the screw now able to feel all the internal assembly build against the pressure plate, then go ahead and snug nut. This for me is so much better than the cold and dead stop feel.
Yamaha recommend that the clutch adjustment is done with the engine cold . Whether adjusted cold or hot the clutch will probably need a second adjustment on a freshly rebuilt engine. You use whatever you find to be the most effective method. I have a perfect working clutch that can be operated easily with just 2x fingers but that takes a lot of attention to detail when building the clutch and lots of experience over 50+ years
Thank you so much for making and posting this video. It made putting mine back on properly so much more simple than I would have done it. I feel like I owe you some money or something. Again thank you so so much brother
you are very welcome Sam thank you so much for taking the time to leave me some feedback its much appreciated . I don't monitor this old channel much these days I have another channel ua-cam.com/video/-Q5xu7gnJao/v-deo.html
How weird, I was looking at exactly this on my latest engine build and after putting all the clutch together was wondering where the hell was all the take-up lash coming from, now I know! Something I learnt today, cheers John!
The motor was NOT set at full advance on the compression stroke ( note at end of video the inlet tappet began opening the valve when tightening the rod nut). This motor will not start/run,probably result in a massive backfire!
you idiot ! this motor started first time and has been running perfectly for 8 years. If you had bothered to read the comments and text and watch the other videos you would have known that
Beef it up run xs 850 gearing waystronger less lash
Are those screws not staked?
no they are not ......the screws had been unscrewed and removed in order to remove and clean the butterfly discs and venturi. The screws are then replaced finger tight so that the discs can move when re centering them. When the discs have been re centered, the screws are then fully tightened.
I had a 1975 XS 650 with the same problem. did all the suggested remedies to no avail. Replacing the clutch cable solved my problem. The cable was rusted internally, enough so that oil didn't help
The key thing that I have learnt about fussy or non eating cats over the decades has been the need to sterilize their food bowls with boiling water every time, before they are fed ...cats have an extremely keen sense of smell and will often turn down food that has been put into a dirty bowl or left out for hours and then topped up with more food . The other thing that is really important is that cats need to be able to smell their food so it needs to be at room temperature when served. Food straight from the fridge has no smell is cold and unappetising and is therefore often refused.
Thank you for the helpful info.
thank you for the feedback its very much appreciated. Hope that it has been helpful to your cat/s . NOTE: Set the Rotor mark to the Full Advance mark on the Stator..... ie the far left mark.. NOT the stator F mark as shown in the video.
Thank You
you're welcome thank you for the feedback much appreciated. Hope you have sorted the issue
Just got a 650 last weekend and it's really hard to squeeze the clutch. I thought of putting a pipe on the clutch lever. Never seen a clutch like this before!
Hi. sounds like you will need to go right through the clutch components from the lever to the clutch basket and plates to find which component/s are causing the dragging issue. If the bike hasn't been used for a long time it may just need some use for the clutch to free up a little . An oil change doesn't hurt with a new bike either unless you know the history. Check that the clutch cable hasn't any tight bends or curves along its length which will increase friction. Oil the inner cable too. You will probably need to remove the clutch cover and check the clutch worm assembly has not been over-greased or tightened too tightly into the cover with the fixing screws. Thats a common source of stiff clutch operation
What if it idles well until you take the choke off? Then it dies.
that would suggest that there is insufficient fuel to the idle circuit on one or both carbs. You don't give any info about your bike so i can't help further .
@@johncooper7242 Yeah, I've done a little more research. It's a bike I intend to buy, so I haven't actually put hands on it yet. The gent is selling for his late father, so he seems to know almost nothing. Based on what I can see in the photos it doesn't currently have air filters, which would mess with the air-fuel ratio. It also may be a dirty pilot jet. It's a 78 xs650.
@@samwhite8668 78 ....is that manufacture or registration date? the stock carbs will be the late BS38 if its the manufacture date. If it hasn't run for a while the carbs will obviously need a strip and clean but as you say with the air filters removed the mixture will be lean . I suspect the filters are off because someone has been trying to get it to start and run for the sale.
Thank you for sharing I will try the egg yolk.:)
Wow really informative thankyou!

Mine has a thrust washer and flat needle roller, which may be after market, but mine is an XS2, so perhaps that is why it is different. Interesting.
It took me the first 2:00 to realise you had your engine upsidedown. At first l though you were usinf selfie cam so that the image was reversed, but lvsaw features inside the upper part of your engine thatcare on the bottom of mine, and thought...... huh!?
Hi bro! When i put stared my bike, the regulator rectifier its so hot and the battery not charge... What do you think about this? Can you help me? Thanks!
Big thanks for this video! Was able to get mine assembled thanks to it. Very well done video!
