In this video of my D2 4U revival project my son and I start dismantling the engine. We make it as far as removing the head. I’m happy to report the new gantry crane worked excellent!
Gantry crane build Caterpillar D2 project extra

In this video I’m building a gantry crane that I need to take my D2 Caterpillar apart for rebuild. It needs to be adjustable in height so I can use it both inside and outside my shop, get it through the door and still have a good lift height.

Home built dumping flatbed trailer affectionately known as “FLIMSY”
Переглядів 9872 місяці тому
Here’s a video of the dumping flatbed trailer I built a few years ago. I was looking for a deckover flatbed trailer that dumps and just couldn’t find any so I decided to build it myself. I’d never built anything like this before and it was a learning process. Overall I’m very happy with how it turned out.

I’ve been looking for a small crawler to restore with my son. A few years afo I came across a John Deere 2010 crawler dozer with a backhoe. Unfortunately that machine had been through a flood and was in very poor condition. Thus I kept looking and finally came across this D2. This will be the first of many videos as we begin to bring this machine back to life.

This is my home built dumping flatbed trailer I recently finished building. Affectionately known as the Flimsy Trailer (my dad decided it was flimsy), I built it to haul my Bobcat and whatever else needs hauling. I wanted a deckover flatbed trailer that dumps but nobody seems to offer one so I set about building my own. I even built the scissor hoist myself. I’ll try to put out a video of the c...
Logging with my 977H, just a small log…
Переглядів 80Рік тому
Had a huge log hooked up and went to take a video. Kept logging and at the end of the day went to look at the videos I had taken, unfortunately my camera took a nice still photo of the line out to the bush and another of the log at the landing instead of a video of the whole process… so instead all I have is this rather unimpressive video of fishing a small log out of the bush…

Always good to have a helper.
Awesome that you gave Squatch 253 a mention. He is the "How To" when it comes to D2s.
Hi mate thanks for sharing I will be following you as you progress
Bon Boulo 😆😆👍👍
Nice I need one of them 😁👍 thanks for the video. Got the old 8T Motor Grader out for the for time this year. I tried to make a video but it is hard enough getting up and down off that sucker. I am getting better at it though 😁👍 Thanks for your Subscription.
A beautiful father son project
Great project. I’m Working on my 1954 No12 8T Motor Grader. Went to start the pony and the electric start quit working. Tore it down 🤷♂️ have no idea why. I guess it just wanted attention. 😊 I haven’t run it in two years. Just got a second 1945, 9K No12 Motor Grader a few weeks back and I’ve been playing mechanic 😊. Thanks for the video.
Thanks! I'll hopefully get a bit more done on the old girl soon... yeah sometimes it seems like things just want attention like you say, my 977H just decided not to start the last time I went to use it too... Enjoy those graders, had a chance to get an 8T many years ago, sadly I didn't have the cash otherwise I would have...
I bought the Vevor 3 ton trolley on Amazon, there was an open box one cheap. I figured that could be my own safety factor :D
Nice build. I just scored a Vestil AHS-2-10-12. I need to crunch some numbers, but I think I can put the improved casters on, sister another 4x6 beam to it, and consider it a 2 ton (vs 1 ton).
The gear shifter is interlocked with the main clutch so check with the main clutch disengaged - it may not be stuck
You want to where possible avoid the weld joint side as the steel has been partially tempered by the welding process.
Looks a great project to follow. As you've mentioned, it hasn't been knocked around or butchered. Cheers Tony
Just use a center punch to mark the location for the holes, way more accurate.
Like your build, i bought a gantry similar like yours only its a little more "light duty" haha. mine uses a lever arm to raise and lower. As mentioned when using annular cutters ut really likes a bit of spray. Anything is better than nothing. Motor oil, wd40 i even used plain water on a job once. Other things is they dont like drilling multiple layers steel because even when clamped on 4 corners there is always a chance there's a little play or tension in one of the layers. The sides of the bit dont cut so it will jam itself.
Anything heavy moved along the track will need to be pulled along the track by some type of winch or winches pulling in each direction. After a few uses, because of the short corner braces, you may discover more movement between the legs and the top rail than you thought you would have. Good luck.
Lubrication goes a long way when drilling holes
Flimsy is a BEAST..!! Great job. You are going to get so much good out of that.
You need to use lube or coolant on the mag drill. Even with annular cutters, usually mag drills come with flood coolant options for them. That and clearing the plugs from the start would likely have saved the bit.
grease points on uprights would help with moving up and down.
Don't forget weep holes for any blind pockets so the water doesn't get in it and freeze. It will crack the steel if enough accumulates. Nice project.
When I built my engine lift many moons ago I combined schedule 40 and 80 for a slip fit. I also had all the pieces hot dipped galvanized as it lived outdoors and that made the fit just right. I was using 2 inch and 2 and a half or three as I recall. The upright receiver I had to weld up as nothing was right for it. Used it for close to thirty years. A little cutting oil on those annular cutters extends their life immeasurably as with the chop saw.
I think that’s great your son was involved too. Good job! Very creative.
6:20 Least you could do is use some gear lube as a cutting oil. Those hollow core drills are not cheap, and sure work better when not overheated and turned to dull nubs. Oh and you speed it up... nice. Next.
You're absolutely right. Was my first time using one of these... It was an expensive lesson.
Do a kick flip
I disliked this so much! So I liked it😊
Diesel can flush out all the crud in the gear box if you can turn the cogs by hand , same for the motor although I think you said it was frozen , I've even filled the pony with diesel to flush and lightly lube the moving parts. Let it drip dry for a day or two though
I poured diesel in mine and took a air blower with a long stem on it. Stuck it in the fill hole to the bottom. And blew air in the diesel. I did it twice and mine looked brand new inside. That's the only way I've been able to get it all out.
Hi mate good to see you working on the old girl love those old girls keep up the good work looking forward to seeing your next video
Thanks, glad you’re enjoying it!
What a beast! Nice work
Thanks!
Looks very nice 👍, what size swivel pins did you use on the rear?
Thanks! I used 1 1/2" pins for the dump hinges at the back.
Hi mate I love all of the old cats I am looking forward to seeing you restore the old girl back to life hopefully it won’t be too long before your next video
@@malcolmyarnold6172 I'll try to upload videos as I have time to work on the machine, but at the moment I've got a few other things on the go that I need to get done before I get to it again, but there will definitely be more.
that just amzaming how good that machine is wish you luck for the overhaul.
@@Yellow_iron_and_spanners Thank you!
Man I'm always so jealous of these machine finding videos. I live in Northern British Columbia Canada which is still largely based around logging to this day. Any old machine that was left around here has been scavenged already. They're all still working. I would love to find something like that and restore it. Good find man
Im sure you already know. But Squatch253. And LAOL. Here on UA-cam have many videos on these crawlers. And they are great guys. I've asked a few questions and they've been great to respond. I have a 1944 D4 2T. And the ACMOC website. Is worth it's weight in gold for becoming a member. Alotta knowledge on their.
Thanks David, I watched Squatch253's entire 5J1113 series from the very beginning. Very informative and I'm sure there'll be many episodes I'll look back on to see what to do on mine. I've been a member on ACMOC since the early 2000s when I got my first cat - a D6 9U that I got for next to nothing with a blown engine. Absolutely great people on there like you say. Hope you're enjoying your D4!
👍😎
Can't hear anything besides the wind noise.
The National Guard would like to know your location lol These were the sort of old run down decayed places my unit got taken to for field exercises lol
I noticed those old Alberta phone number's on the sides of the camp shacks! Whereabouts would this camp have been. Looks very similar to a camp that I stayed in 'bout 15 year's ago near Conklin. I realize they could simply have been built by the same company, but I am just curious. ❤
Rip Leslie Nielsen
I take it that was a camp for logging crews?
You should have gone inside!!
Old tanks are so AWESOME!
Thanks so very much, I just got my 743 adjusted to almost perfect!
Awesome stuff! I have the same model 743, same problem, now I can fix!! Thanks so much!
Does the hydraulic fluid need to be brought up to operating temperature first? Its cold outside. My Allis tractor has a wet hand clutch and it creeps when its cold, then goes away. Wondered if cold oil has an effect on a Bobcat for creeping.
Thank you for the tutorial, now I wont go into work looking like a complete idiot 😄
I need to do this to my 743...it doesn't creep...it leaves the community...lol
you are genius
👍🏻
that was a great vidio.for the right side ,,,now show us how you adjust the left side which is way back under the metal plate where the fuel tank sets on. thanks @@77هيرتز
Awesome video. I have a 642 and now know exactly how to fix it. My thanks.
Would this work for a 743?
Yes. I have a 743 that does circles when I don't hold the levers.
Huge help! My step dad recently passed and I've been doing my best to take care of my mom and her property. We have a 642b and until this video, I really thought I was in over my head. I really appreciate you sharing your knowledge.
