If there is an old saying for a movie called "respect the content, not the message," I think it would fit this movie. I look at The Birth of a Nation from a scholar perspective. I don't agree with the film's ideology and viewpoints, but I respect the film for its story and technical achievements. D.W. Griffith, through this movie, unlocked the inner machinations and the power of movies as an art form and as a means of entertainment rather than as an experiment, and helped influence cultural and significant changes to the film industry. The Birth of a Nation, as controversial then as it is now, is the birthplace of our American movies.
