The GRAMMY Award® winning vocal supergroup, säje (rhymes with “beige”), is the brainchild of vocalist/composers Sara Gazarek, Amanda Taylor, Johnaye Kendrick, and Erin Bentlage. Born out of close friendship and deep admiration, these world-renowned artists, composers, and arrangers have come together to explore, create, and celebrate the music that moves them. Their highly anticipated debut album was released in August of 2023, featuring new original work and compelling covers, highlighting collaborations with artists Jacob Collier, Terri Lyne Carrington, Ambrose Akinmusire, and more. The album was received to critical acclaim, landing a #2 spot on the Billboard Jazz Chart, and peaking at #4 on the iTunes Jazz Chart, along with a sold-out tour across the USA, and a GRAMMY Award® win for “In The Wee Small Hours of the Morning” (featuring Jacob Collier). The union of säje is rooted in the tradition of joy, curiosity, lush harmony, heartfelt expression, and profound sisterhood.

“In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning” written by David Mann/Bob Hilliard; arranged by Sara Gazarek, Amanda Taylor, Johnaye Kendrick, and Erin Bentlage with Jacob Collier; featuring säje and Jacob Collier on piano + vocals. Vocal engineering, production, and editing by Erin Bentlage and Amanda Taylor; Jacob Collier tracking by Pete Min at Lucy’s Meat Market; mixed and mastered by Rich Breen. Artwork designed by Miles Wintner with line drawing by Kaveh Rastegar. Album produced by säje.
“säje is blazing a new trail for female composers and performers in the jazz world” -- Micah Hendler, Forbes
“...[säje is] taking the vocal jazz ensemble into the 21st century.” -- Abe Beeson, KNKX/NPR
“...transcendent music.” -- DownBeat Magazine

“It was an absolute thrill to hear Jacob improvise this tender and heart-forward rendition of an iconic jazz standard in the recording studio, and to then to be given the space to compose and arrange, layer and paint around him, after the fact,” shares Sara Gazarek. Erin Bentlage continues, “I realized quite soon into the session that Jacob was very deliberately holding space for us in everything he was doing. Specific breaths, harmonic pivots around single long notes, leaving room for us to play in a moment he could have easily taken - in take after take of unendingly generous creativity.”
When a jazz ensemble earns a GRAMMY Award® nomination with its very first song, something unusual is in the works. Magic is a word that comes up often when the women of säje talk about the group’s founding and evolution, and the story of their first single, "Desert Song," has attained near legendary status. Early in the group’s journey, the women took a retreat in Palm Springs where they formed closer bonds and experienced a creative breakthrough. This creative energy resurfaced when they had the opportunity to perform at the Jazz Education Network Conference in New Orleans, which then led the women to quickly create an entire set of new material, much of which makes up the debut album.
Encompassing finely wrought originals, reimagined jazz standards and inventive interpretations of contemporary tunes by the likes of YEBBA, The Bad Plus, Michael Jackson, and more, säje’s debut exists in a space without sonic or genre boundaries, coaxing the vocal ensemble into new sonic territory. In addition to Jacob Collier, guests on the album include vocalist Michael Mayo, trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire, drummer and NEA Jazz Master Terri Lyne Carrington, tenor saxophonist Daniel Rotem, bassist Ben Williams, drummer Christian Euman, and pianist Dawn Clement.
When you look at the accomplishments of the women in säje, their individual virtuosity and singular chemistry starts to make sense. Erin Bentlage has been featured on albums by Jacob Collier (Djesse Vol. 3), Kiefer (When There’s Love Around), Kate McGarry (What To Wear In The Dark), and Amber Navran (their collaboration Golden Light). Amanda Taylor is a Grammy-nominated arranger known for her work with leading vocal ensembles, including Groove for Thought, The Manhattan Transfer, Chanticleer, and Kings Return. Johnaye Kendrick has honed a deep repertoire of originals and inventively arranged standards, jazz tunes and contemporary pop songs, having released two albums on her record label johnygirl, 2014’s Here, and 2018’s acclaimed Flying. Sara Gazarek is a two-time GRAMMY® nominee for her solo albums, and is widely considered one of her generation’s definitive jazz vocalists.
With multiple award nominations and critical acclaim this early in their artistic journey, säje is poised to shine on the international stage with their debut album, paving the way for other singers to explore new sonic and emotional territories.

Love you ladies !
Amanda Taylor finally meets up with Gerald Clayton!
I’m not a jazz fan per se but this ‘kind’ of interthreaded jazz harmony I love to mix in my listening to music. And actually I’d say this group is epitome of ‘that kind’ of jazz. It’s like a Jimmy Buffett or Nanci Griffith video: you are compelled to watch rather than just listen because there’s so much of the right stuff going on that you have to see it not just hear it. Fantastic.
This is one fine piece of music! It combines virtuosity and musicality of the singers that I haven't heard since CSNY. No instrument can match the sound of pure voices. Go, girls, go!
Emocionante❤
that's inspired
This sucks
I listen to this song 2 or 3 times a week. It's a happy place 😄
Spatially and with the singers they are from another dimension.
Amazing
Wonderful ❤
I don't understand the World anymore. How can something so creative, musical, beautiful, technically proficient, and totally uplifting have 15K views and something as crass and fake as Baby Shark has 14 Bln views. The World is so mixed up.....
this cover is annoying .... not sure what it is .....
Beautiful, thank you !
Liked Manhatten Transfer. Loved Take 6. Adore Voces8. Own saje's latest album. But the original Jolene cannot be improved upon. It is sacrosanct.
I can't believe they removed this song from their CD on iTunes! I saw them perform live, and these women are amazing. Their vocal arrangement on the song is fantastic.
Beautiful!!!
❤
Beautiful - love from Switzerland!
So good!😍
so beautifull! Thanks for your music.
This is sublime vocally and a wonderfully creative arrangement, which we have so come to expect from you. Sorry Ive gotta say this (controversially perhaps), I am more than a little 'shut out' from you as performers by the frequency of you closing your eyes, it makes it an unintentionally 'self' (thing). The lady in the yellow T-shirt looks so happy and engaging with her eyes open, she literally visually blossoms and comes alive (visually), only to be received by mostly closed eyes. The eyes are the windows to the soul. Occaisionally is fine for a moment, but please don't shut me out by keeping them closed for so long :( (IMO).
Not much raises the hair on my arms these days, but this - your blend, tonality, synchronicity - did it and makes me want more.
I have enjoyed their album so much. Beautiful on all levels.
Did the Original Justice and made it your own!
Thanks

So incredibly beautiful! I just saw them last night and their voices touched my soul. If you get a chance to see them grab it….they do not disappoint!❤
Incredible
If aliens are studying us to decide whether to wipe us out or not, hopefully they hear this
Clusters goosebumps
Whaouh 😮, i'm speechless. I've just discovered you a few weeks ago and i can't stop enjoying
If it's possible to hear something beyond beautiful....this is it. 👍🏾🙏🏾👊🏾👏🏾🥰
The first instrument. That was stunning. I'm so glad I found this group. ❤
This is so beautiful ffs
wanna hear Johnaye Kendrick solo!!
She has 2 records out. Self produced- the songs are all on UA-cam.
@@MsSambaNow thank you for the info! (:
Beautiful arrangement, Jacob was so into it, we can see how much he was thinking in the beggining haha!
My new morning 🌄 routine this song....amazing powerful ✨️ and energetic ❤
Wow, I'm really grateful for your amazing support! You've been an active and engaged subscriber, and I value your input. I'd love to dive into some interesting discussions with you...

❤️🔥
Goosebumps 🙏🏻🫶🏼🤍
This song reminds me so much of The Free Design. Absolutely beautiful. I just can't get over how warm and seamless their harmonies are.
It's like listening to 4 Bonnie Hermans (Singers Unlimited) you Lady's are awesome... Glad you were able to fit that Jacob guy in somewhere *wink*
Super song from Dolly, nice performance, I'd like some less-soft piano harmonies, something with more bite.
Need to update your 'Grammy nominated' status...
How is it even possible to hear harmonically like this? I presume this is Collier’s doing. Astounding!
A seminal piece of recorded music.
Heartwrenchingly beautiful.
Absolutely wonderful and beautifully made video's .I 'm Happy!
When you scat in unison with chords, that's something special!!!!
Oef, so much potential. So little output!
