Surviving the Game: ALWAYS Check the Barrel
"Surviving the Game" (1994) is an adrenaline-pumping action thriller that catapults you into the dark, wild heart of human nature and the ultimate hunt. Directed by Ernest R. Dickerson, this film redefines the classic man-vs-wild narrative with a gritty, urban twist.
**Plot Overview:**
Meet Jack Mason (Ice-T), a down-and-out homeless man teetering on the edge of despair in the unforgiving streets of Seattle. Just when it seems life couldn't get any bleaker, he's thrown a lifeline by the enigmatic Walter Cole (Charles S. Dutton), who offers him a job as a survival guide for a group of wealthy businessmen on a remote, picturesque island. It's a chance for a fresh start, and Mason seizes it with both hands.
**The Deadly Game Begins:**
Upon arrival, Mason meets the group: the charismatic and psychopathic Thomas Burns (Rutger Hauer), the icy and calculating Doc Hawkins (Gary Busey), the sociopathic brothers Derek and John Griffin (William McNamara and F. Murray Abraham), and the trigger-happy Tex (John C. McGinley). It doesn't take long for Mason to realize that this isn't an ordinary hunting trip. Instead, he is the prey in a perverse and deadly game where the wealthy hunt the homeless for sport.
**Survival of the Fittest:**
What follows is a relentless, high-octane chase through the wilderness. Mason must rely on his wits, street smarts, and raw survival instincts to outmaneuver his well-equipped and sadistic pursuers. The forest becomes a battleground where every tree and shadow could mean life or death. The hunters, accustomed to having the upper hand, quickly learn that Mason is no ordinary prey.
**Twists and Turns:**
"Surviving the Game" is packed with intense action sequences, psychological warfare, and unexpected twists. As Mason turns the tables on his hunters, picking them off one by one, the line between hunter and hunted blurs. Each confrontation is a testament to his resilience and cunning, showcasing Ice-T's gritty, no-nonsense performance.
**Climactic Showdown:**
The film builds to a climactic showdown that is both thrilling and cathartic. With the odds stacked against him, Mason must confront his deepest fears and the men who see his life as nothing more than a game. The final scenes are a brutal reminder of the primal instinct for survival that lies within us all.
**Why You Should Watch:**
"Surviving the Game" is a masterclass in tension and pacing, keeping viewers on the edge of their seats from start to finish. The stellar cast delivers powerful performances, with Ice-T's portrayal of Mason being particularly noteworthy. The film's commentary on societal inequalities and the value of human life adds depth to the relentless action, making it more than just a hunt but a profound survival story.
In essence, "Surviving the Game" is a must-watch for fans of high-stakes thrillers, blending intense action with a thought-provoking narrative. It's a heart-pounding, edge-of-your-seat adventure that asks: How far would you go to survive?

Judy Garland had to be corseted three years before the Wizard of Oz at age 12. Judy Garland was corseted because her bosoms were the same size when she was 12, 13,14 15,16, 17, and 18! Judy Garland was Not overweight! The most she ever weighed in her entire life was 103 pounds which is a healthy weight. Judy Garland at 12 and for her entire life was only 4 feet 11 and a half inches tall! Her shoe size was only 4- and one-half inches! The ruby slippers were six feet to be more comfortable to danced and walk in! However, the vulgar, dictating, hypocritical, tyrant troll Louis B. Mayer who was always overweight himself and born in Russia/Prussia living under the Zahr, then migrated to New York insisted Judy Garland be kept on a strict diet and ordered prescription addictive diet pills to be taken and cottage cheese, canned peaches, his mother's awful chicken broth soup with no chicken or noodles for Judy Garland! The Arabian style ruby slippers were only worn once for test photos by Judy Garland when she was a blonde Dorohty Gale and Geroge Cukor who just filled for four days after Roger Thorpe was fired as the director from the Wizard of Oz because he was rushing through making the movie and the footage was considered awful by the producer and by George Cukor. Geroge Cukor exact acting words to Judy Graland was' "Remember you are just a little girl from Kansas!' when he changed her gingham dress to the gingham dress with white pinafore blouse, that is seen in the final film and the bugle bead ruby pump slippers with no bows were changed to red sequined ruby slippers with bugle bead bows and changed her long blonde hair to auburn pigtails and curls. He made Margaret Hamilton's Witch's Hat taller and pulled her hair long stringy black hair back in a bun to give her a more severe look! Judy Graland was still an adolescent at 16!

Always had a soft spot for Rik. He was as punk as they come. A mad lad with a real gift. Both he and Adrian Edmondson were a comic duo with real staying power, and it was a brand of comedy to be reckoned with. From the Young Ones, to Drop Dead Fred, Bad News and Bottoms, he was so entertainingly weird and loud and wonderful. He made us laugh, and did so consistently. He was such an endearing ham, and he was everything fun, and anything but boring. Rest in Power you legend!! Rik Mayall 1958 - 2014

By the book the silver slippers were lost when Dorothy crossed the barrier so to speak, the other side of the rainbow. They remain in the Fairy Land of Oz and they are technically still Dorothy's property. She could go reclaim them if she had the ability to cross the deadly desert, as it is anybody could try to claim them and find that they couldn't cuz they did not defeat Dorothy to get them. Dorothy very well could have used the Gnome King's betlt to retrieve the shoes but Ic don't think the children thought that through and Dorothy is under the mistaken impression that the gnome King belt is so much better than the shoes when Dorothy only knows one of the powers that the shoes hold and the Gnome King attempt to get Dorothy to relinquish ownership of the shoes to him. But anyway, the shoes would not have been on her feet in either case so it should work for what they wanted

I'm afraid that's not it. When Dorothy flew over it on her way back to Kansas, the silver shoes fell off and were lost in the desert forever. And it's the Nome King; unlike in the movie _Return to Oz,_ the shoes never ended up in the Nome Kingdom. As for the belt, why would Dorothy want the shoes when the belt can do basically the same thing? ;-)

    • @yamanuhem.netjer3165
      @yamanuhem.netjer3165 4 місяці тому

I was aware of the Desert being the actual barrier, I was being poetic. For the movie Return to Oz, Disney decided it was better to call back on the Shoes and skipped the Belt entirely. Much like in the MGM movie skipped the good witch of the North and just used Glinda twice switching her to the North rather than the South. The Desert can be traveled over by flight or, as Ozma and her Entorage showed by crossing to the kingdom of Ev by unrolling a massive carpet. Dorothy could have recovered them. It has been theorized that the shoes fell off because they would cease to exist or lose their charm if they left a "fairland" such as Oz. The Shoes never made an appearance again but they were mentioned several times across the books. The Nome King would want them because they are made of Silver and he wants all such treasures for his cave. The fact they have strong magic is just all the more he would seek them. Yes, she has access to the belt's ability to grant wishes as long as the subject of the magic is not only found on the surface typically, such as trees. But the belt is one object whereas having two has obvious benefits and she wouldn't need to get Osma to do things all the time. The shoes have powers not known in addtion.

@@yamanuhem.netjer3165 I don't know what you mean by "as long as the subject of the magic is not only found on the surface typically, such as trees." Dorothy can use the belt whenever she wants to.

You are corect, it had been a few years since I had read it so I revisited the book. Baum did in fact only say wood. I was remembering the Nome King involving Eggs and how the Nome King explains life in his realm, no day and night, etc and possibly something I read that someone wrote. From others I have read that later in the books the belt is inconsitent, or seeming forgotten about in some books. If so, its likely because Baum was tired of the setting having to return to it by popular demand and financial needs over time but thats just speculation.
