Gene Baur at Peacefield Farm Sanctuary
When we started Peacefield never in our wildest dreams did we think someday Gene Baur would come visit us. They say never meet your heroes but this was the exception! Gene is the President and Co-founder of Farm Sanctuary. Since the mid-1980s, Gene has worked to end factory farming and advocated for a just and compassionate food system. He is the author of two best selling books, and his work has educated millions and inspired an international farm sanctuary movement. He was kind enough to visit, share his journey, answer questions, and just be more amazing than we already thought he was. Farm Sanctuary is truly incredible and worthy of your support. If you haven't seen our previous videos working with them here they are:

Peacefield is a 30 acre farm sanctuary located next to Gainesville and the University of Florida. Our not so secret secret mission is to save the world. By eliminating animal products from our diet we can save the animals, our health, and the planet. The ultimate win-win-win! We are a 501(c)(3) non profit and Peacefield exists to rescue and rehabilitate farm animals and to be a resource to the community through education, farm tours, plant-based cooking classes, kids programs, a community garden, fitness classes, and more.

Vegan Homesteading / Florida Rescue Farm
Переглядів 7 тис.4 роки тому
When we started our journey to Peacefield, Glenn and Kelly were some of the first FL people we met and showed us how they created their own piece of magic at Florida Rescue Farm. Originally this was just going to be a homestead as they wanted to live off the land and remove themselves from the food system. They weren’t vegan at the time and assumed homesteading had to include killing and eating...
Freedom ride! He fell off a truck, escaped slaughter, and found a new home!

This sweet boy avoided a dark fate. Weighing about 250 lbs he survived a fall from a moving truck on his way to the slaughter house. His brother had to be euthanized on the scene due to his injuries but this guy came away with only a few scrapes. He was taken to the Lake County, FL animal shelter and needed a forever home. Thanks to sanctuary friends he found his way to Peacefield. Although he ...

    This is awesome to see and I'm inspired by their openness and courage to do better once they knew better. I will say, I disagree with the notion that their animal farming neighbors aren't bad people because they're simply following the money. I seem to be the odd vegan out for this, but I can at least respect hunting or a self-subsistence farm more than some coward who lifts themselves up by putting others down - in this case literally.

    I have stopped my car and traffic, and moved turtles out of the road FOR YEARS, and would actually see cattle across the street, and never thought about the life of a cow, a pig, a chicken, etc. How conditioned we all were to not notice.

    Well, RIP. My great Grandmother did all the chopping. Even at 101, she would grab that chicken and chop that head. It is how you are raised to survive on a farm; she has been raised on a farm all her life in Puerto Rico. I feel you; I can not chop a live chicken's head for my life. You need to also consider that there is an overpopulation of chickens. Then there is an overpopulation of Foxes, bears, Cougars, and panthers, and in no time, we become the hunted ones. They are the overpopulated ones. There is no accessible medium; either we are the apex predator, or we become their food supply. Of course, I am not talking about Cows or pigs; I am talking about what eats the cows and pigs. The more cows, pigs, goats, fowl, and chickens, the more predators. Increase food chain.

    • @duskexx1742
      @duskexx1742 10 місяців тому

      Buddy.... Farmed animals aren't wild. If we didn't breed them, they wouldn't exist. They're not 'overpopulated', they're perfectly populated for the number we demand them to be in. I'm really confused by how you decided that predators would start hunting people? Foxes are not going to kill us, obviously, and predators that can try to avoid us. 'Of course, I am not talking about Cows or pigs; I am talking about what eats the cows and pigs' WE EAT THE COWS. No one else! The only reason foxes and such eat lambs is because we eradicated the native animals that lived there! Once we stop breeding them, the native animals will return.

    Hi, I love what you’re doing! We are an equine sanctuary but 2 days ago we took 2 calves headed for veal. I know nothing about cows! Other than grass and hay I don’t know how to feed them. I’m up in southern Ontario and I’m concerned about them in the winter. Do you feed soaked alfalfa pellets, oats? I can only find out how to feed cows to make them fat sadly. I’d appreciate any advice! Thanks, Nicki Carlisle Creek Farm

      Oh my goodness, wow! This is so amazing of you THANK YOU so much for saving them. We know that’s a huge undertaking! We learned a ton from our neighboring sanctuary Critter Creek who has rescued the most cows of any sanctuary and from our vet. We have 4 cows and 3 of them came to us already weaned from the bottle. I gave them a calf starter grain according to the bag instructions from Tractor Supply during their first winter with us along with rolls of hay. We then rescued our 4th cow and he was a baby who needed to be bottle fed (twice daily by the time we rescued him). Again it was a formula (Unimilk) from tractor supply that I mixed and warmed according to package instructions and bottle fed him twice daily (he was 8 weeks when we received him). I believe it is calf starter grain until they’re 6-7 months old then switch to regular grain and if the grass is growing and lush they may not need grain after that age. You can give them a bottle til about 6 months. Around 4 months when they’re eating grass/hay/grain you can gradually cut back on bottles. We use a multi species mineral (since we have sheep and a mini donkey too) and access to a salt lick. We provide a tub of molasses in the winter as well. I hope this helped - I know there’s so many people out there way more experienced and knowledgeable so keep reaching out and you’ll continue to learn and improve ❤️ thank you so much again!

    My family is vegan but we have a dog and we cook his meat at home. Even dealing with meat that’s not for my family still feels sad bc we know what the animal went through. Now on the process of looking for a country property we will not have animals for eating, but what to do for the dog❓ buying sustainably raised meat is very expensive as well.. so ... and we’re not giving the dog away. He’s family

    It is hard not to be intense when the blinders from our eyes are removed amd we realize whats going on and want to change but everyone else around us continues on like they don't even care. Its extremely difficult when people know everything but make the choice to continue on contributing to animal suffering,etc.
