    I personally go back and forth with leaving the exhaust brake on auto when I shut off the truck. I Use it 99.9% of the time while driving, but I do tend to worry in the winter months about the truck starting with it engaged. It may be unfounded, but I’ve heard some theories that it’s better to turn it on manually when it’s cold outside after startup. In the summer, I just turn off the truck with it on and my tuner does leave it on its last setting when turning the truck off/on. I’ve read some theories about potential issues with cold oil and some others about possible issues with the actuation on startup if left on when turning the truck on/off, which it’s supposedly why it’s not automatically left on with stock trucks. I’ve got nearly 130k miles on my OEM brakes and still have a fair amount of life left in them, all thanks to the exhaust brake! I will say, i love the sound of the high idle with the exhaust brake on cold starts! Really does sound like a jet engine 😂. Have you heard any negatives about starting the truck in the winter specifically, with the exhaust brake engaged on startup? I’m being a little more cautious than I’ve been in the past now that my truck’s 8 years old and I just had to replace the actuator this summer. I’d be curious to hear your thoughts on just leaving it engaged all the time like I’ve done for quite a few years since certain parts mysteriously fell off my truck. I’m really wanting to do my best to extend the life of the turbo as long as possible, so that’s why I’ve waffled on the idea of leaving it engaged 100% off the time on startup and shutdown.

    I have a 2017 Ram 3500 6.7 diesel. P2609 code my heater grid. Apparently there is a nut that gets cooked and can fall off and go into the engine. I am about to get an upgrade. I can get a stock set up or I was thinking about the Banks Ram which would give it more air flow. Will I need to modify anything else if I go that way or am I better off staying with the stock option?

      I installed a Banks Ram in my 2007 6.7 cummins last year. It came with everything I needed and more. No mods and the Banks video was very detailed and easy to follow. I am an old school back yard mechanic with no formal training btw. I am totall happy with it and have driven it across country twice this year pulling a 10,000 lb camper.

    you dont need to cycle the lift pumps on newer 5th gens man, they dont back drain when you shut the truck off, they only release pressure. you do need to cycle when changing fuel filters though. you would be surprised how quickly EGT's go down. I run the Banks iDash and can see all 3 EGT sensors. Even pulling a 10k toy hauler above 6k ft elevation, the EGT's rarely get over 900deg. Coming off the highway to the house pulling the toy hauler, my EGTs can go from 800-900deg down to under 600deg in less than 1mi. I do idle while re-fueling on long trips (towing or not), but short trips running around town and re-fueling on the way home, I will shut the truck off...no issues...

    I have a 2012 ram 2500. 250000kmsMy seals are going on my turbo :( I have blue smoke coming out of exhaust when letting off the throttle when turbo is cold or when I’m in traffic. I use the exhaust brake regularly but I believe with the amount of back pressure being upwards of 60psi it’s caused the exhaust side seals to leave the chat. I’m upgrading to the fleece cheetah VGT right away here as it’s $1000 more than rebuilding the stock turbo here in Calgary. I’m hoping that this new turbo will outlast the stock by a long shot

    Just hit 70,000km on my 2020 2500... pretty similar to yours and just like you my only issues have been emission related. I believe 6 times now I've gone into the dealer to have DEF related parts replaced under warranty. I think Alberta cold had somthing to with it. Started getting my DEF from a pump and had great success. And totally agree with the factory running boards...that'll be my next purchase is maybe a set of bulletproof side steps. little pricey though. You have a running board suggestion?

    • @jl6.790
      @jl6.790 Місяць тому

      Sounds like its a common issue with these trucks, both running the same truck and both had the same issues. Interesting to see the point of getting DEF from a pump, ill have to take a look at some other gas stations to see if there's DEF pumps around my town, Unfortunately the station I frequent doesn't have anything but the boxes. As for the Running boards I currently have the AMP research Xtremes and I'm very happy with them, Gives me the look of having no running boards which I like, and makes the truck look taller without compromising usability by going with a 6-8 inch lift but they still make it super easy to access. I haven't had any real issues with them in the last few years and they always seem to work in the snowy frozen conditions. I spend a lot of time on gravel roads where lots of dust and debris accumulates on them so as long as you're able to keep them reasonably clean they should last without issue, obviously, like anything though care and maintenance go a long way. I personally haven't run any other aftermarket running boards that I can suggest but that's just due to lack of time with others, not because I believe AMP is the only good option

    1. Sounds cool 2. Save brakes 3.save turbo Are you even a mechanic? In my personal experience I took over a truck with 175,000 Mi on it from a guy that always used his exhaust brake and already changed the actuator at 100k. The turbo went out at 200k so I ended up with that expense to start off on my first diesel truck, an LML. I never ran the exhaust brake after that, put another 500,000 miles on that truck and it's still got the same Turbo that I replaced. Now I've got an l5p and up to 300,000 MI, no issues with brakes or the turbo. Long story short it sounds to me like it causes more issues, at least in my experience. So I don't run it and I don't like how it slams up into high RPMs which can't be good for a lot of things. I'd like to see the science behind what you're claiming but I have my doubts it's actually beneficial

      Based on what I have read, seen first hand, and heard from all the local diesel shops is where this information is coming from, there are hundreds of forums, videos, and websites explaining the benefit of running it vs not running it with lots of first-world experiences within. Just giving those who are new to diesel trucks insight into recommendations and everyone including yourself is fully capable of making the final decision on whether they will do something or not to their own vehicle.

      @jl6.790 i advise you to do some more research. It is a highly debatable topic, and it is irresponsible to tell people they should use it all the time. It should not be overused and should only be used in certain situations. Even then, engine and transmission temps need to be monitored. Especially if you're using it a lot in the mountains. Its a brake, its to slow you down in certain situations. Theres more going on using the engine brake than just air going back n forth. Lol its debatable if its good for the engine, tranny, turbo, etc. I just havent seen anything where it says its an actual benefit to the turbo, as you say. It "might" not hurt it from what ive read about it, but....use it all the time right. Haha leave it up to the mechanics, but thanks for the answer 😉

    • @jl6.790
      @jl6.790 Місяць тому

      @@cham5275 I will continue to do research and look into it but as with any debate there's people on both sides, clearly you're on one side and myself and the people who work on my things are on the other. Nothing I say or do is with a gun held to anyone and they are fully capable of making their own decision based on the information provided. Not to mention I have a plan in place for making a "why not to use your exhaust brake" video and as with all things on the internet, everyone should use more then one source. Ill be sure to include a "for entertainment purposes only" disclosure in the video itself instead of just the description as I did with that video and every other one in the past. Thanks for the comments though, good or bad it boosts the channel!

    Ram 6.7 any generation is a win win. Carli, weight loss, build trans your good to go. Stay away from the ridiculous wide wheels and or spacers. The biggest problem is guys want the rubber band tires and wides which will kill any steering and suspension. Carli has the best ball joint expensive yes but worth it. I love the 5th gen looks but stay away due to cp4 and the roller lifters.

      @nahaha4565 if you know of videos show a mechanic saying that please post it. I saw a video explaining why to run thinner oil and it made perfect sense. They showed a 6.7 lifer next to a 6.0 powsroke lifer, both looked very similar until he turned them around and showed you the hole used to pump them up, the cummins was half the size of the other, with the thicker oil they're collapsing because they aren't filling up fast enough.

    Is the Dodge/Cummins not equipped with a Jake Brake anymore? Did not realize they have switched to a variable vane turbo setup?

    • @jl6.790

      I believe they switched to a vgt turbo in 2007.5 when they released the 6.7 Cummins to replace the 5.9 Cummins due to stricter emissions requirements. As for the comment about the jake brake I am fairly certain dodge/ram 6.7 trucks never came factory with a jake brake, other then on the 5.9 there was a dealer installed option for one. But I could be wrong and would love to see if someone knows otherwise

    I have a 2019 F250 Powerstroke. I use the exhaust brake 100% of the time, and you need to consider operating RPMs. Exhaust brakes don't work at low RPMs. I keep 2000-2500 as the best operating range, empty or loaded. I got a Raptor paddle steering wheel, revolutionizing my driving experience. The engine warms up faster and is much happier (as opposed to lugging), soot levels are lower, so regen times are extended. I also use Archoil at every fill-up and the cleaner at 5000-mile oil change intervals. I don't see much on exhaust brakes, and this was a well-done video. Thank you.

      @@jl6.790 Absolutely. If people drive these like diesels, rather than like gasoline cars, they run better and last longer. Thanks again for this as I haven't seen another video like it.

    It’s good practice for your VGT to run it always, it’ll keep it moving freely.

    • @kyles234
      @kyles234 2 місяці тому

      VGTs are junk. It will still fail. Rarely do they see 300k kms. Meanwhile a fixed vane will easily do 1m kms.

    • @FireBosspilot

      @ Ya, that’s why I’m on my original VGT TURBO at 430k miles..what a dumb statement ..

    • @kyles234
      @kyles234 2 місяці тому

      @FireBosspilot oh wow!! One that lasted more than 300k. I work as an automotive mechanic and I see tons of failures of VGTs. There is a reason why there is delete kits for them. Here in northern Canada trucks do a lot of idling and the fixed vane turbos will outlast them 3 to 1.

      @FireBosspilot Місяць тому

      @@kyles234 Congratulations, you’re a mechanic, I guess I’m the exception to the rule. Idling trucks all night may have something to do with their failures. How many of your trucks have the valve cover breather line piped into the turbo housing?

    • @kyles234
      @kyles234 Місяць тому

      @FireBosspilot i delete the ccv and the vent them to atmosphere when possible. The vgt failures still happen to the deleted ones. Too many cheap electrical moving parts in a VGT.

      usually add an additive to the tank on every fill up but I'm not brand loyal in any way, as far as I'm concerned something is better then nothing. Check out my video I made couple weeks back about mistakes cummins owners make I go pretty in depth with the subject of fuel additives

    I know that crystal formations in the DEF fluid can cause enough trouble to lock a truck in limp mode. Rislone apparently sells a really effective DEF tank additive to prevent that. Emissions equipment can definitely become the downfall of a truck if you don't stay on top of it. There are mods that can greatly mitigate the damage they can do though. One really good product that is fairly new on the market, but totally makes a difference for your engine health is an EGR-filter solution by FASS. Definitely check that out! But the best of the best of them all is the Speed of Air pistons that you can get for most of the model years of the three big diesel truck platforms. These pistons actually truly nullify the problems you see with after gas treatment equipment because they single-handedly make a truck almost emissions compliant! And they improve fuel economy and increase low end power and extend engine oil longevity. They do more for engine health and longevity than any other single upgrade ever did. They're just a superb overall upgrade to any engine platform! Unfortunately, they don't yet have sets for 5th gen Cummins (2019-2025) listed on their online shop, but they're definitely coming. Even the Detroit Diesel 6.5L platform has gotten a set! Definitely research those things!

    The 2019 and newer rams with 6.7 cummins has the thin walled graphite block which is prone to cracks! The 2017 and 18 rams have major issues with the ABS and hydraulic control module. The emissions are intentionally made to fail and destroy the cummins engines! The epa gestapo in the US has declared war against all internal combustion engines especially the diesels. You must pay for carbine credits or face fines and a lawsuit! The epa is run like the mafia were you must pay for protection or they will shut you down. This is all about extortion for money, they are part of the largest organized crime syndicate in the world, the us government! If you have any problems with these trucks and are trying to purchase replacement parts forget it because ram chrysler jeep dodge is going bankrupt! They bought into the EV scam and dumped their profitable cars and trucks. Their co taveras has made his main goal in life to destroy FCA mopar and for thirty nine million dollars a year he is doing a great job! Do not buy a ram truck unless you want to be cheated and left with an ninety nine thousand dollar boat anchor!

    I would recommend as a additive for lubrication '' Cheapest you can find '2' cycle oil mix '''''' I've seen it selling in 5 gallon bucket's at farm / ranch supply.... If your driving a newer one with all that pollution devices under it.... evenly it might stop--up one of those devices under it' on the Exhaust.
