    In the play, none of the 3 girls singing this song got into the chorus line at the end of the show. In the movie version, one of them did. The one that did was (*&(&))(&()&*0 (sorry I misspelled it).

    I was at Parkening's master class in Montana years ago and he stated this is the most beautiful piece ever written for classical guitar. He actually said this

    • @juli8orodriguez44
      @juli8orodriguez44 4 роки тому

      And he plays it as it is written, with the exception at the beginning, like most top player he does not slide the F from the 1st string down to the 5th fret as it is written. As far as I am concerned he plays it better than even Segovia did. I had the pleasure to see him in concert many years ago.

    Capricho Árabe AKA Arabian Stubornness is such a beautiful composition that no matter if you play it fast or slow, it's brilliance comes up. Nevertheless, Parkening's interpretation as far as I am concerned, it is the one that I enjoy the most.

      I think all signer/dancers did a great job, but the big difference between a stage and a movie production is, that in a movie production through post-sound design and editing as well as cuts in the video material, the magic of witnessing a life show with all its tiny imperfections and variations that make every single visit special and unique is lost. In a stage show there are no second takes, and that's what makes it special every single time. A big part here is also that there isn't and there can't be any interaction with the audience, while most musicals dedicate sections of the show to engaging the audience, say by certain characters breaking the fourth wall in between and addressing members of the audience directly. I've found no movie version of any musical as of yet that could take it up with the original stage show, but it's not the performer's fault but just in the nature of the medium. It's just an all over different experience.

    Such a beautiful but also sad song from a great adaptation of a unusual stage play. This is the only play i know of that shows the audition process in detail. I wish however that the writers of the play would have given sheilas part to a different character. Shes so forward she is obnoxious.

    But everything was beautiful at the ballet Graceful men lift lovely girls in white Yes, everything was beautiful at ballet Hey! I was happy... at the ballet spoken: That's when I started class Up a steep and very narrow stairway Sheila and Bebe: To the voice like a metronome Up a steep and very narrow stairway Sheila: It wasn't paradise Bebe: It wasn't paradise Sheila and Bebe: It wasn't paradise Sheila: But it was home Bebe: Mother always said I'd be very attractive When I grew up, when I grew up "Diff'rent, " she said, "With a special something And a very, very personal flair." And though I was eight or nine Though I was eight or nine Though I was eight or nine I hated her Now, "Diff'rent" is nice, but it sure isn't pretty "Pretty" is what it's about I never met anyone who was "diff'rent" Who couldn't figure that out So beautiful I'd never lived to see But it was clear If not to her Well then to me Bebe and Maggie: That everyone is beautiful at the ballet Every prince has got to have his swan Yes, everyone is beautiful at the ballet Maggie: Hey! Bebe: I was pretty Sheila: At the ballet Maggie: I was born to save their marriage but when my father came to pick my mother up at the hospital he said: "Well, I thought this was going to help. But I guess it's not." Anyway, I did have a fantastic fantasy life. I used to dance around the living room with my arms up like this. My fantasy was that it was an Indian Chief... And he'd say to me, "Maggie, do you wanna dance?" And I'd say, "Daddy, I would love to dance." Bebe: But it was clear Sheila: When he proposed Maggie: I was born to help their marriage and when Sheila: That's what he said Bebe: That's what she said Maggie: I used to dance around the living room Sheila: He wasn't warm Bebe: Not to her Maggie: It was an Indian chief and he'd say "Maggie, do you wanna dance?" And I said, "Daddy, I would love to" Everything was beautiful at the ballet Raise your arms and someone's always there Yes, everything was beautiful at the ballet At the ballet At the ballet! Wheres the rhythm? Why is the metronome section so slow and sounds nothing like a metronome? Why do we only see their weakness and not the strength they use to cover it up? Gah, I hate this. It butchers the message of the song and the musical integrity of the brilliant score.

    • @DerpsGW
      @DerpsGW 7 років тому

      Completely agree. Too often people cover up a strong moment in a song with a "weak" cut off thinking they're giving a creative twist. All they're doing is robbing themselves of a chance to really wow the audience.

    It's a real pity that Parkening retired so young. He was truly a Segovia heir. A sensible artist, although, obsessed with religious thought. His religious believe should not had to interfere with his music development. His recordings are a historic treasure, unforgettable. Hope someone uploads the entire LP records.

      OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT FROM CHRISTOPHER PARKENING: In July, 2012 in Charleston, South Carolina, the renowned American classical guitarist Christopher Parkening was inducted into the Guitar Foundation of America (GFA) ]Hall of Fame and given the Artistic Achievement Award. This prestigious award is given to "performers who have made monumental contributions to the development of the art and life of the classical guitar." Mr Parkening also used this occasion to make this notable announcement: "As I am gathered with you to celebrate the classical guitar, I have chosen this time and place to share with you what for me is a rather difficult announcement. After nearly five decades as a concert guitarist, the time has come for me to step away from the concert stage. "Some of you know that for these past few years I have had some physical issues resulting in numerous back surgeries. At this point in my life, I would like to focus more on my family and on my commitment to teaching my students at Pepperdine University and in master classes throughout the country, sharing my insights and experiences- both musical and personal- as I mentor young artists. "I am grateful to all of those who have had important roles in my life and career. Through the years I have tried to play my guitar for the purpose as defined by J. S. Bach who said, 'Soli Deo Gloria,' 'To God alone the glory.'"
