I'm not sure about mobs chasing another mob up or down, but for general wandering mobs will search an area around them for a solid block to pathfind to and then try to get as close as they can to it. A slope has a higher quantity of blocks on the up side than the down side, meaning they'll tend to pathfind upwards. WhiteStoneJazz has an excellent video that covers this topic.

I made and was playing with a Beta 1.7.3 world, when I later went into version 1.6.2 and played that exact same world, forcing the game to load me into Creative Mode, giving myself stacks of unstackable items, diamond blocks, and messing with the terrain. When I loaded the world again, this time back in Beta 1.7.3, it was as if nothing had changed except the stack of diamond blocks that had found itself in my cheat. Do you think you could experiment why this happens?

Here is the thing with 1.13->1.12, in 1.13, numeric ids were completely gone, 1.12 tried to load the world's chunks but failed once it saw the non numeric ids, so it reset the chunks and entities it failed to read.

I'm curious why stuff dissapears that exist in older versions. Take going to 1.17.. why would mountains dissapear? They consist of blocks that 1.17 also have.

I always thought it was just because there were more nearby blocks to pathfind to upwards since there’s usually blocks under the higher ones, and I know some farms use a large clump of blocks to tempt mobs into a killing chamber so I know they don’t all need to be accessible for it to effect where they choose to go

Yeah i have a few big towers in my village and i noticed that the villagers just straight up go climb the staircase and bunch up in the top floor. After rescueing them i blocked off the staircase now
