    I really love this channel and the whole idea of it. Its really awesome and needed. I downvoted just this vid because i gotta say i did not enjoy the disparaging political comments made. Nor hearing alot about how they didnt like someone elses prayers. Its offputting tbh, its not our job to judge other peoples prayers or intents.

      Hi, this is Matthew. Sorry you didn't like this video. I don't recall hearing any political commentary on this episode, but I understand what you mean about our guest getting frustrated about the prayer to receive good grades. I think the others on the episode clarified with him that he meant to say he felt like the student was asking for God to *give* him good grades instead of asking the Lord to *help* him in the process of learning, which principle is well in line with prophetic teachings on improving our prayers. However, at the end of the day, while we as hosts do our best to keep conversations aligned with the Brethren, we are careful to specify that neither us nor our guests speak for the Church or the Lord. We'll take this feedback into consideration and try to improve in keeping discussions on topic. Thanks for listening and we hope you find benefit in our other episodes!

    Awesome discussion! Thank you both for doing the Work to put this out there. One thought and one question: Thought: Pres Oaks stated that he doesn’t know that policy and doctrine can be differentiated in a church that believes in ongoing revelation. I think that applies to a different context, but the ambiguity is still there. Also, the referenced talk did not discuss corrections in doctrine, such as Adam-God or the race ban. We hope that our understanding of doctrine aligns with eternal truth but that hasn’t always been the case. And as for looser usage of the word “doctrine,” I agree for the most part, except in the specific case of George Albert Smith’s First Presidency statement, the race ban was explicitly labeled as doctrine with accompanying description of its permanence (“never before questioned by previous leaders” or something to that effect). The Church really hasn’t dealt with engaging prophetic error yet, and that’s a messy, messy topic, but extremely relevant. Question: have you dealt with Boyd K Packer’s “Not all truths are useful,” sentiment from his talk, The Mantle Is Far, Far Greater Than the Intellect? Curious for your thoughts. Thanks again. Great episode.

    • @conferencetalk
      @conferencetalk 4 місяці тому

      The word doctrine has not had a universal, strict meaning attached to it historically. Church leaders earlier in the dispensation often used it as a synonym for "a teaching" whereas in modern times, we have attached a more strict definition to it. Dr Michael Goodman has done some great work in this area, demonstrating the changing nature of the word over time. When we refer to doctrine in our conversation, we refer to the more modern definition of it as a description of eternal truth that is inherently immutable.

    • @aBrewster29
      @aBrewster29 4 місяці тому

      @@conferencetalk I agree to a certain extent, and I also laid out the exceptions. We have a current top leader saying there’s no difference even today and the church president from 80 years ago adding specific context that aligns with today’s prominent doctrine vs policy concept. We have authoritative instances of both mentalities in both eras, so the argument that what we call doctrine today is fixed, certain, and absolutely represents God’s will just doesn’t hold water. The Church’s position today represents the collective views of the leaders, which we merely hope aligns with truth.

    I think that the cross would detract from the ordinance of the sacrament and specifically the focus on the body and blood symbolism. It is by His body and His blood that we are cleansed. It is not through the cross itself.

    Conversion is not a process. Conversion is another term for being born again, redeemed, and coming unto Christ. There is not one example of conversion or spiritual rebirth as being a process. Moses 6 explains this spiritual rebirth and how it's in likeness of your temporal birth, which happens in a moment, as there is a time and day of birth. The reason its taught as a process is because it seems hardly anyone is experiencing that spiritual rebirth, even among the brethren as Elder Oaks openly stated in a meeting not too long ago. Compare that with Oliver Cowderys charge to the 12 and there is quite a discrepancy going on at the highest levels of the church. Also, the idea that a spiritual witness is more powerful than a vision makes little sense as visions and dreams are coupled with the spirit as Joseph's vision in D&C 76 describes. Laman and Lemuel were just as hardened against the voice of the spirit as they were a vision, both mediums had no effect on their ability to be converted. Being valiant in the testimony of Jesus is not the same as having a testimony of Jesus. The, not a, testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy. And to have the spirit of prophecy is to be a prophet. To be valiant is to speak the truth by the spirit and that will not award you many friends, but will assuredly grant you many enemies. All those who live in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution. One must become a prophet first before being able to be valiant in the testimony of Jesus in the first place.

    It's interesting how the Lord renames so many people (Abram to Abraham, Jacob to Israel, Simon to Peter, Saul to Paul, etc). In most cases, the pattern seems to be giving them a more powerful view of their identity and potential. It seems to be a call to become an enhanced version of themselves. It seems like a paradox that we can become something greater via humility. Our cultural enthusiasm for expressive individualism and worshipping "the self" can be a Nehor-like deception. Good conversation.
