The Nature of Things
Canada
Приєднався 1 кві 2017
For over 60 years, The Nature of Things has explored our planet’s fascinating creatures, ecosystems, and scientific breakthroughs. From 1979 to 2023, it was hosted by world-renowned geneticist and environmentalist David Suzuki. In 2024, new hosts Sarika Cullis-Suzuki, a marine biologist, and Anthony Morgan, a social science researcher, continue this legacy. They bring fresh perspectives on how science and conservation can help shape a sustainable future.
ABOUT THE HOSTS
Sarika Cullis-Suzuki
Sarika has a PhD in marine biology and has hosted episodes of The Nature of Things and programs for Audible and Ocean Networks Canada. She continues her father David Suzuki’s legacy, which began almost a decade before humans landed on the moon.
Anthony Morgan
Anthony Morgan is a social science researcher and game designer who has hosted science programs for Discovery Channel, CBC, and Vice. He runs a lab studying how we can have better conversations around tricky science.

How to eat fewer ultra-processed foods | with Chris van Tulleken
Ultra-processed foods (UPFs) are everywhere. According to the documentary Foodspiracy, more than half of Canadians' calories come from foods that are ultra-processed.
UPFs include things like mass-produced bread, ice cream, breakfast cereal and instant soups - foods that are created through multiple industrial steps. One way to determine if something is a UPF is to read the ingredients: if there's at least one ingredient you wouldn't normally find in a domestic kitchen, it's likely ultra-processed.
In Foodspiracy, Dr. Chris van Tulleken joins The Nature of Things co-hosts Sarika Cullis-Suzuki and Anthony Morgan to dive into the world of ultra-processed foods and explore how giant corporations have worked to sell us products that seem to prioritize profits over health.

It's truly amazing. I had that special bond with my Apache, miss him.
😮???
seeing the three of them work together there was lovely <3 real horsemanship
Thank you so much for sharing. I was diagnosed with N with Cateplexy at 26 in 2001. This is the closest to what I experience on the daily. Hug your mama. I have the best parents in the world, and they did not see it either.
If seals are so rich why don’t they buy a boat
Ok so what? The endocrine systems function differently
We're got viral Fish Singing before GTA 6
Love to see Mae doing this show! The production value and research going into this is more than admirable. Needs to be shown in every science class. We have known nature is not exactly binary for a LONG time- let’s make it part of the curriculum!
It's an interesting presentation, but hyenas and clownfish are still either male or female. That they differ from our notion of what it means to be male or female does not mean they do not practice anisogamy, or that they are intersex. They are simply different species with their own evolutionary traits.
It sounds like gregorian chanting
STOOOPP THEY'RE SO CUTE
This was presented in a really informative with well communicated points. Very glad to see this
Great documentary! I was fortunate last spring to photograph Anna's getting fluff from a type of willow tree. One of the most exciting situations in my years of photography.
" we kind of" not....We ALL have an accent. I speak 4 languages and I have an accent in all of them. It all depends where you learn those languages and at what age.
Thank you sir ❤
Fascinating!

- Hate to say it, but China did it to themselves. They eat anything && *everything!* They even illegally over fish protected areas && other countries. Even endangered species as well. *They need to be shut down!* 39:44
So awesome to see them still feed the baby after it left the nest
I love Bailey I will die for Bailey 💔
So... grey brain
“LEGEND!”
This is an amazing program for youth at risk. The government will most likely fund it. Just a thought…..
I'm impressed by this comments section, at least the first view people.
They're removing anything critical.
I always love seeing people talking about how weird gender and sex is in nature! Shout out to my favourite trans animals: Ribbon Eels! :)
I love the way he uses the other horse sorda inviting that Buckskin into a pack. Part of the transitional comfort. Brilliant 👏 👏 👍
“how to eat fewer” ? Lol wtf. Jc you know one day I’m gonna be dead and this language will still go on. Well my advertising slogan for myself is I JUST DON’T BUY IT.
I think I just witnessed you lighting a paper maché burner and then pause the episode because I was laughing too hard or did i do that E: okay we got to the kids and now I’m uncontrollably crying omfg I’m so excited for these kids 😭😭
Me on a ship in 1800s hearing this in the dead of night, waiting for the sea demons to come get me: 😭💀
Hummingbirds are magical creatures. And Eric and his passion are so inspiring. I hope to see a longer documentary someday about how he created this paradise for the hummingbirds. What trees and shrubs and location are the hummingbirds using to build their nests? How can I turn my backyard into a hummingbird heaven? We have so much to learn from the hummingbirds and from Eric. Pure joy!
This was so beautiful! This man is such a gentle soul and a wonderful citizen scientist. Thank you for this excellent little documentary.
Still, if a mouse enters a room, 99% of womens monomorphic brains will prompt them to jump on chairs and call a man to solve the problem.
Thank you so much! This is an important message about what's obvious in nature. Biology doesn't fit into simple binary terms. 💜
Honestly, I did not know that hummingbirds live in a cold climate and don’t migrate to a warmer place. Here in Utah they arrive at the end of March and leave at the end of September. Thank you for this beautiful video.
Note: I make my own jams by buying frozen berries and reducing them on my stove and adding a combo of Swerve and liquid Stevia. Far healthier than adding equal parts fruits and sugar. I also use a SodaStream and use Lemons, Limes, Grapefruit Juice as well as the likes of raw Ginger Juice I make myself and raw Turmeric as mentioned with liquid Stevia. All super + healthy
Mistake on the Non Nutritive Sweeteners - There are very save ones like 100% Stevia, Monk Fruit and the likes of Swerve that only contains 100% Erythritol. I have no idea as to how the CBC research staff missed the boat on these. Still shaking my head🤔🤣🤣🤣
What a pleasant surprise to find this video on UA-cam. I love hummingbirds and we'll watch this channel again. Thanks so much for paying attention to those little gems
The way he does this, he still break the horse. 😪
Excellent. Thank you Mae, so well done! And many thanks to Nature of Things and CBC.
Love seeing you hosting/presenting this one Mae
Timely and informative, thank you!!
Such important information!! ❤
This is fabulous work! Mae Martin is so good!
queer science nerds rise up‼‼
A very informative video, well written and explained. Thank you very much for putting this information out there
Explaining this to the unintiated is a battle in itself. No matter how perfectly you try to put the condition into words, the healthy person may never understand that feeling of the fatigue-limbo and the frustration that comes from not being able to sleep or stay fully awake.
Such a gorgeous looking animal
The brain stuff, spot on.
Never knew about hyenas. Thanks for posting.
