@@elymental You're the girl to do it, too many classic car owners, simply don't have the trust or confidence in these old work horses. The way you threw your Midget with the K series engine around that track, you definitely have what it takes.... If you can only do a bit of the Rt Then Arizona has to be my favourite, California near AZ excellent, Pan handle of Texas, Lovely bits on whole of route, but for a long good run Arizona hard to beat. Spring or Autumn best times for Brit tolerable weather. Jim and me close to our best by dates, you've plenty of years in your tank... So do it but do it in a classic as you won't be likely to see another actually being driven: Plenty on drive ways and parked.

I bought a 1960 Bugeye Sprite in 1970, and a Mk III Sprite in about 74. Australian delivered so rust free, but came with all the A Series, SU and Lucas foibles. I have now gone to the dark side with my current model MX5, and sadly, don't miss the Sprites one bit. Call me shallow.😊

Ah, those engine and gearbox sounds! My Mum owned a 1957 MM1000. I've owned a 1955 Series II convertible since 1986, plus a 1950 "Low Light" - both powered by 1098 Sprite engines. I've been told that local school kids call the Low Light (in Roman Green) the "little green rice bubble". I'll happily own that! We had a Morris Minor in early 60s, then a Morris 1000 Traveller. I think that's the name. Wooden frame. Rusty floor and green mould on frame. Beige/brown paintwork. Around 1967/68. It took us five kids and parents on many journeys around Scotland before it finally got beyond economic patching up. A Datsun Sunny was the next family car. It lasted nearly a decade with minimal work to it.

Hi Jimmy, My first car was a Morris Traveller, like yours it had green moss growing in the rear window gutters, due to the drainage holes being clogged up. Spent my summer resurrecting it, that was back in 77, in 2017 I got myself another, which I am in the process of fully restoring at the minute. Once I've done I plan some long trips and never restoring another car 😅👍

Sounds like when I get mine back on the road Simon (about a year, as I am doing a lot on it, so having to use the Midget at the moment, which I also love), if you live in the UK we need to take it for a spin, do a nostalgia video. My first car was a Moggy Traveller in 1977, it had been my Uncles, I sold it and bought the MG Midget that I still have. However, I did like the Moggy and had great adventures in it, so in 2017 I purchased another Traveller, drove it from Stoke to Norwich on the day I picked it up, took it up to tye Highlands of Scotland the following Summer, the Ardennes in 2019 year, then in lockdown decided to tart it up, mistake as I took the timber frame off and made a big job of it. But once back on the road it will be adventure time. Hopefully will do Rt66 Slovakia in it, plus many shorter trips👍. A lottery win and I could do it next month 🤣👍 Many thanks for your Subscription very much appreciated 👍

pleasure to watch your runnings! reminds me of such phrases as tooling around the country. I as especially enjoying your music. It reminds me that England brought us in the Americas such great music as The Beatles and rock and roll and Elgar and is is pleasing to just here these riffs along the road. I have suggested John Coltrane who has provided me some pleasurable driving music even when I was not motoring. Although we played lots of Micheal Jackson on previous road trips out west a recent artist I have listened to is Joe Jackson

Also from Norwich and also used to own a red Midget which I also drove around Norwich & Drayton. Loved winter drives with the half tonneau cover on. Those little food heaters work wonders. I swapped my Midget for a Locally made Turbo Esprit again in red :-)

Johnny! This is so funny! I could not have envisioned going to the Grand Canyon in my AH Sprite. And it would have been an unimaginable trip going to the Grand Canyon in my Alfa Romeo spyder. The last trip i drove it on the weather rained and water was coming in everywhere. the weather was cold and so I wore construction leather gloves. I am now toying with buying a miazbuchi spyder and do not know what a road trip would be like in that one. I am a private pilot and had not taken a cross country before i stopped flying the Cessna 152 I was certified in. My imagination explodes! Grand Canyon Baby! Thanks

Thanks Paul, Really appreciate your comments. I like to think I have that pioneering instinct that if the wheels fall off, we'll get there somehow. I think my Kentucky friend Jim, has a similar view, however others might see us as a couple of foolish old men.... a country bumpkin from Norfolk UK and a Hillbilly. Certainly was a trip that proved to me these old buses can do more than most folk realise (not however, in comfort though not a vehicle for those liking luxury lol). Inspired me to taken a 1500 mile trip to the Scottish Highlands and back in my 1964, this last summer, in fact one of the first things I did when I got home was to book my Midget into a show at Brodie Castle near Elgin, Scotland. A flight over Grand Canyon in your aircraft now that would be something Paul. All the best and enjoy those cars in whatever way gives you the most smiles Johnny 👍

Johnny. I just realized your trip is like the tv show here in the states called Route 66! Except a better theme song for the show is one by John Coltrane. as you add songs to your road trips (and I like your selection of music for them) I suggest you listen to his. Thanks again Buddy. Say hi to Jim!

Good to hear Rod, I'd have loved to have seen some of those small towns and attractions in their heyday. I also imagine that even in the 1980s they would have still been thriving with small businesses. Thanks for you comments and all the very best Johnny 👍

Many thanks for your comments Edward. Have to say I loved Arizona. Yes the windscreen cracked on the trip, I remember seeing the bit of rock flying towards my face having been thrown up by another vehicle, but can't remember exactly where it was, I believe it was back in Oklahoma. Lucky it was passenger side really or would have been a problem. Jim's probably still driving around Kentucky with it like that, knowing Jim 😅. Jim and me both like driving our Midgets with the hood (softtop) down and when a guy on an MG forum suggested we did RT66 we along with 27 others were up for it. Well folk said they were, finance was my only issue, but covid and lock down did me a favour as it gave me more time and also the realisation that if you don't do things when they present themselves you might never get the chance. Sadly most of the others were full of hot wind and excuses. Some folk like Dave, Allen & Lynette, Bill and a couple of others made great efforts to meet up and join us on bits of the route, which we so appreciated. We ended doing about 5000 miles and only put the hood up for about 2 hours in our 6 week adventure. Thanks to some lovely young Slovakian folk we met at a gas station in the Californian desert, we now know of RT66 Slovakia and Czech Republic, so money and health permitting, that has to be done in a 60s classic car. Possibly my Morris Traveller I am rebuilding at the moment. If I get the chance to do Route 66 again it will be with my wife so not a classic and not the whole route. A few places I would love to visit again. All the very best Johnny

On the way back we got Jim's Childhood dream and stopped in the Wigwam Motel ... I had a tight budget so couldn't push boat out too much, plus it was 7 weeks on the road. All the best Johnny
