Had an incredible time teaching my parents how to play Pathfinder with the beginner box :)
If you're really interesting in finding a family friendly or kid friendly version of D&D, Basic Fantasy RPG (BFRPG) is a retroclone based on D&D Basic, is simpler that OSRIC, and it's free. BFRPG has free supplemental content including adventures. BFRPG does not have devils and demons in the monster section of the book, does not have alignment (in other words, no player option to be chaotic or evil), and it has ascending AC (roll d20 add modifier, meet or beat AC) which may be easier for kids to learn.
That’s awesome! I’ve heard of Basic Fantasy but never looked into it. I’ll have to check that out!
Hey there! At 11:48 you mention a review of the digital version, but I can’t seem to find that video. I have the digital version from a Humble Bundle, and seem to lack the creative vision to use it. I’d love to see your video on the digital version. Thanks!
Here’s the link to my review of rhe digital version (pre-remaster) - ua-cam.com/video/IUXMRvRxkF8/v-deo.htmlsi=NWH0Pkx7Zbl8j1JR // When I prepped to run this for my family, I printed out the adventure and put in a binder. I also use a blank pathfinder battle mat (a great investment) to draw on with an expo marker.
I want to buy this but can’t find it anywhere.
I saw it was back-ordered on Arcane Library. Hopefully, it will come back soon! It’s worth it.

Very interesting Beginner Box. Thank you! Started in 1980 with D&D BX. Played every edition of D&D since then. It's time to look at Pathfinder now that it's Remastered without the OGL.
You’ll love it!
Doesn't it also improve their imagination?
Totally! I love that about D&D!
It’s a fantastic setting. I like that it has a lot of open content so you aren’t beholden to canon
Exactly! I like that too!
Eberron's aesthetic feels magi-punk more than high fantasy or sword & sorcery. It's like Shadowrun tried to re-create Indiana Jones. And I love it.
I agree! It’s a great campaign setting! It’s a shame that WOTC doesn’t support it more.
Amazing video!!
Thank you so much!!
@@rchriswells you're welcome!
Hello! I run a podcast about all sorts of things d&d/rpgs. I am also a teacher that runs a d&d club. Any chance you'd be interested in being on my show to discuss making rpgs more accessible for kids? Thanks! X - @rollaroundpod
Fr
yes!
Shadowdark is so awesome!
Why there isn't a solo-option in general is beyond me.
I think there’s a real market for that!
@@rchriswells 2 good examples, the "D&D Adventure System", which are boardgames, but solo is an option, and "Dragonbane" of course. So it's very possible to do, and Coronapocalypse pushed this more into the light, but still, most of the time, they'll avoid it like the devil does holy water. It's not like this would be super expensive to do, we are probably talking about a couple of pages, in the simplest variant. So weird this isn't more mainstream.
Nice part is.. you can use Archives of Nephys to glance thru any of the books systems without spending a dime and decide if worth your $$. IMO almost all the books are, I just don't have the $$ on hand to buy them all... yet.. also waiting for next years releases before really start getting hard copies. Joy of PF2e is there is literally $0 needed to spend to start playing it, gming it, or learning it in any respect.
Agreed! I love that about Pathfinder second edition!
Awesome taster for this book Chris - thanks so much! I'm guessing I'll need to also grab one of their adventures/settings books if I'm not going to want to freestyle an adventure?
Thanks so much! Yes, check out my video on their 5e Shire Adventures. I’ve not yet reviewed this one… but the Mines of Moria adventure that just came out looks really good!
How many total hours of play would you estimate each monthly book/adventure covers?
I would think for kids… 3-4 hours per zine. So maybe one or two sessions? That’s just a guess. Everyone’s group is different. Each zine contains a single adventure.
I think the biggest thing preventing me from getting into Pathfinder 2e is the sheer number of books. Are the different Player Core books required, should I just wait for the remastered versions to be released? It's like looking back at how D&D 3.5 turned out, a book for every occasion it seemed. I kinda choked when I looked at the price of this box set, but with literally everything in it, it's definitely a much better value then any of the 5e beginner sets, and I have generally high opinions of those, in comparison with the rehashings of old content back to the AD&D days.
No book is required because rules are all free on AoN. If you really want a book, Player Core 1 is all you need. Monster Core is you want more monsters but not required. GM Core if you want alternate rules and design tips etc, not required. Player Core 2 if you want more player options. Again, none of these are required
I'm going to have to try this I'm always struggling to draw the maps quick so we can get back to playing
Really enjoyed the detailed review, thanks!
Thanks so much!
What is very good about the BB is that it gives you enough monsters and info on Otari that you can continue the adventures beyond what's in the box.
Totally!
Hi I am the author of an educational role-playing game for children. This is the game where young heroes solve the problems of monsters without violence. Everything takes place in the Land of Heroes, a magical world where almost every creature speaks and has its own rights. The rulebook is very friendly for new Game Masters and the game rules are easy to learn for kids. I will start a crowdfunding campaign on Gamefound, because I want to translate my game into English. Master of Fables (Mistrz Baśni original) has many fans in Poland. Here is the link to the DEMO version: drive.google.com/file/d/1bwJLbrjZW9yE--xq8Wmov7H6gnzJ3h85/view and the draft page on Gamefound: gamefound.com/en/projects/school-of-imagination/masteroffables Why am I writing to you? Because I want to ask you if you are interested in looking at my game and maybe showing it to your audience? This game is different from other children's RPGs. I will be glad if you reply to my message. My email: mar.kubiesa@gmail.com Best regards Marcin
Thanks so much for that info about the school/youth support from Paolo, I’m definitely going to suggest that to some people that work in schools and in youth work programs!
Awesome!
Edit: Paizo, not Paolo 😂
This is a great review. I have been running RPGs for a few deacdes. Whenybkids are old enough they are allowed to play in the weekly game, before then they get one shots every so often (herokids, mouseritter). My weekly group switched to PF2e (original) just before the OGL stuff hit. Some of the players (grown ups) really haven't caught that this isn't d&d and that is a bit of a difficulty. They really like how easy d&d is with very few conditions and damage type not mattering. Im hesitant to buy the new books, because having to learn a new set of terms may fry some brains.
I love it! A lot of good thoughts here! Thanks for the comment. I agree re: your PF2 players. I wouldn’t do anything mid-campaign to confuse them. I might wait until you are between campaigns to look into the remaster.
I have used this in my sandbox campaign. It’s great. I love supplements like this that you can plug into your game.
I agree! These scenarios are awesome to plug and play!
Great intro to their complex game.
I love this beginner box. It's so fun to open and go through. Christmas every day of the year!
Haha! I agree!
While I'm not a fan of the old editions, I don't think they have any dark themes in them. On the contrary, I think they are actually rather made for a child audience than current editions. Current editions have more mature themes and more complex rules. Old editions were more cartoonis and had a stronger resemblence to board games. If anything at all, DnD has grown up with it's audience.
That’s a really neat perspective. A good reminder! Thanks for commenting!
It looks identical to the previous 2e Beginner Box set. What exactly makes this set "Remastered" ?
It’s the same adventure. However, all the spells, magic items, terminology (flat-footed = off guard) and monsters match the new remastered edition. A handful of monsters have been substituted out. Other than that, it’s the same as the original.
Wow. I did not know that they remastered the BB. That's great!
Thanks for this review. I had the original PF 1E beginners box, and even though I did not use it for playing PF games, I still to this day use the pawns, maps, and the beginner adventure. Paizo really makes good products. I might have to buy the new beginner’s box anyway. Btw, their goblins are the best! I have 10 of their pre-painted goblins in my minis collection ❤ Thanks again!
Thanks so much for the comment! Yeah. I find D&D goblins to lack flavor. Just a minion to hack through. Pathfinder’s goblins on the other hand are awesome.
@@rchriswellsyou mentioned an email to Paizo if one has a library or after school program (I did not see it in the notes). Can I get that? I do run a d&d tween club (we are actually playing Shadowdark currently), and I might see about running a few sessions of PF to see what they think.
@@dustincoopermusictotally! community@paizo.com!
@@rchriswells thank you, good sir!
I love all Dungeons with Dads videos!
Thanks so much!
The Paizo team learned a lot from making this box. That is why the Pathfinder box is so good. Pathfinder box came after this one. This box is fantastic for what it is. I don’t like the nerfed character sheets as it’s impossible to roll into the next level without rerolling a character. My kids loved it.
Awesome insights! Thanks for commenting!
love the break down.
Thanks!
Thanks for running through this Chris, great information!
Thanks so much!
I'm glad I picked this book up for the infiltration and chase subsystems alone. Love this one
Chases are a blast!
I love Tinyd6 games! I moved over to ICRPG (for the crunch and Runehammer is cool af) but they have similar LOOT driven character mechanics which I love.
ICRPG is awesome!! I love that system!
Ok…so I have heard repeatedly that you’ll need to know the 5e rules in order to play this campaign/setting. What specific rules is that? Outside of the action economy and combat…what other 5e base rules are needed if you play this using only the setting of LOTR?
Those are the main rules. If you are looking for the “complete” package, look into Free League’s the One Ring. That has combat mechanics and everything all rolled into one. This particular book is essentially just the One Ring minus those parts with the monsters retooled to match 5e’s encounter balance. Hope that helps!
@@rchriswellsdoes that mean I can jump into the One Ring with 0 prior knowledge of DnD? I would like to try out DnD with some friends for the first time under this setting. Is there anything else I should read before the One Ring?
@@ivancanales7747One Ring is a complete self-contained TTRPG, so that resource would be all you need to get that system-aside from any adventures Free League has produced that interest you Shire Adventures, Moria, etc. However, if you want to play LOTR: Roleplaying which uses D&D 5e rules, you’ll need to get the D&D 5e Players Handbook and D&D 5e Dungeon Master’s Guide (& possibly the Monster Manual if you want extra monsters besides the ones that appear in the LOTR Roleplaying book) and be familiar with that system before you start.
@@ivancanales7747 The good point of One Ring rpg thar rules has been made just for Middle-Earth settings, so all rules are thematic! The D&D is less thematic, but simpler for those who knows allready D&D and don`t want to learn new rules. Both are excelent products, but if you want to live in Middle-Earth, chose the One Ring version! 😉
I've been running TTRPGs since 1989. I've also GMed several campaigns in PF2. I'm still overwhelmed by this system.
I can totally see that. It is definitely super crunchy. However, check this out. I ran across this the other day, and it has really helped me. It’s a really robust PF2 Cheat Sheet. It’s been a game changer for me: mattreagandev.com/?page=tabletop
When it comes to fantasy game I always go with pathfinder 2e, because this system support many styles of fantasy. I just finished an short adventure that me and my friends was all undeads finishing a mission that went wrong.
Love it! I totally agree.
I like the fact that they got rid of ability scores, and Alignment. Honestly, after 2E, D&D did not need the ability scores anymore, and I never used Alignment since every other rpg out there shows you don't need it (lol). Do they still use spell slots? Because that would be best changed to a more modern system (and not the system that 5E used, which is crazy more complicated that the original spell slot system of AD&D and B/X). Thanks for the review! This is the kind of game I would play (and my oldest daughter would too if given the opportunity), but never would run, because of the crazy size of the books. I personally feel if your game is 300+ , then that should be all the rules for the game (that's why I only use the 5E PHB & the DM's section of the basic rules and even then, we've thrown out so many rules lol)
Thanks for the comment! Yes, Pathfinder 2e uses spell slots, although they operate a little differently than D&D 5e. PF2e has more pages than D&D, but the majority of those pages are given to character options rather than rules.
@@rchriswells After watching this video, I joined the Forum for the "Rocky Mountain PF society" and signed up for this Wednesday at one of my game shops. Since i have it free, I thought I would go there to try it out since I have friends that keep telling me to try it. That being said, I will still keep on using games like Shadowdark, or even pitch EZD6 to my Tweens library group since those games are not only really easy, but better for casual play (they only meet once a month, so not a lot of time for rules questions and even character development lol). Thanks again!
I have not read the Playing the Game sections that come after all the character creation sections and basically it took me several days to become confident about making a character. The step 7 in the sample build was confusing but that information is there on each Class chapter, but there are small details that take time to see. Now as far as role-playing feats and skills, I do recognize the levels of training and how that effects proficiency bonuses but just interpretation of some of the feat and skill descriptions is possibly going to be a challenge at least until I read that later Playing the Game section of the book. There are tags or keywords highlighted at the top of most descriptions and those are important but basically I looked at some remastered monsters in Monster Core and found that it was readable and friendly which made me happy but like I said feats and skills descriptions are not transparent yet to me and will take more time.
I can totally see that. You may want to jump onto Pathbuilder2e.com to get a feel for character creation. I’m all for doing characters by hand, but playing around on that site might help. It helped me! Thanks for the comment!
@@rchriswells I use to recommend pathbuilder to everyone, but have started to take a more measured stance on it now. If you only want to make basic characters, it's a great tool for beginners. If the beginner wants to however REALLY get into the system and make complex characters, it gets in the way of that process.
what a lovely review! it's great that you remind people that if the GM wants to, they can take on the rules burden, so the players can just focus on the story!
Thanks so much!!
Kids and grown-ups love it so. The happy sight of a six on a roll.
Amen!
I cut my teeth on B/X and 1e. But even then we didn’t bother with segments and weapon speeds. 1e’s RAW combat is its greatest failing, followed very closely by different ability score maximums based on sex. Most other things, even the quirkiest ones, are fun and endearing. OSRIC presents this system very well.
right. i thought this was for system administrators who want to teach their kids about the linux shell in a playful way
