    I have a heat loss of about 11kw and at the time the 12kw Samsung wasn't available so I had a 16kw version which is actually the same unit just the 12 is downgraded by software. We have had ours 4 years now and as we had oil before seemed a no brainer. I didn't change any radiators for a start but have now over the last 2 years. We now use between 4000 and 4500kwh per year which equates to about 900 quid Ours runs at a flow temp of between 32 and 40 degrees depending on outside temp and as we are in a 220 year old solid stone house we leave it on 24/7 Very happy with it

    I've gone a different path with GFCH, but key is pushing the heat losses down by adding as much insulation as you can - My gas consumption is now 25-30% of the 10 year old new build, in winters rarely seen in Whitley Bay. High thermal mass downstairs, low mass upstairs - The coombes were a pain to augment because of the construction but it transformed the top floor when the last slab of insulation went in. All boarded up now, you'd never know it is there. Your views on the importance of the rads are spot on for low temp heating, but a few gotchas to think on from my own experience - I fitted triples to most rooms, 200%+ of the theoretical heat loss at -16, but you're dealing with such low real power outputs, the bigger the better, it gives you plenty of reserve. The bathroom and toilet were a pain to tame for return temp - The problem is a towel rail behaves like a straight through pipe - I tamed mine with huge alloy rads added on, but were I doing it again, I'd go for electric towel rails, and leave the alloys on stats on the heating loop. I thoroughly recommend a total flush of the pipework, fit new stat valves (Mine are IMI Eclipse and are a delight to set up for flow balancing) and yes I know Adam's views on zoning, and new lockshields (Mine are Herz even though they are only used as shut off valves, they were on special offer) then start fitting all new upgraded rads - Forget about any that are adequate', the cost of new rads are not ridiculous in the overall scheme of things, and you start from a fresh datum. PS mark the date of fitting under the end plates so it's not lost over time. I'm currently running the boiler on constant heating 24/7, 47c when it's -5 with return ca 23c - Will have to wait for the -16 to see what it maxxes out at but quietly confident it'll sail through. All rooms are flatlining at their individual temps, gas consumption little different, but the comfort is a delight - Heating costs ca 370 quid a year, but gas is now cheaper here than back in the UK.

    Forget the grant and go it alone - we had the same problem (11kw heat loss). Over time we built up an EV (on IOG) and 20kw of battery storage. Our house is grade F and uses 20,000 Kw / year, it currently getting internal insulation (room by room), and the main heat source was oil. I got a quote on the old grant system about 5 years ago (15k), and octopus (£7.5k plus grant). In recent months installed our own bivalent system (i.e. just tapped the ASHP into the exisiting heating) - total cost was around £1500 max. - lucky that we got an accident damaged, but new ASHP - Daikin 3M monobloc 6kw system. for £900, 08/01/25 we used £6.50 of electricity (93kw, incl 41kw of EV charging) with an average temp of 1 deg - no oil needed on the 8th, but if the batteries are getting low, just turn on the oil heating = works well albeit a bit of monitoring to manually optimise.

    I just don't see the value of heat pumps whist electrical costs are do high. Having to rely on time of day tariffs even with 3 or 4 time more efficient is too tenuous a proposition for me. I do hope Octopus pushing them like that doesn't come back to bite them

    • @Lewis_Standing
      @Lewis_Standing День тому

      @@stuartburns8657 did I do my piece about efficiency or SCOP in this one? Heat pumps don't heat your home with electricity directly, they use the refrigerant gas and the fan unit to suck heat from the outside air and bring it into your radiator pipes. Have a Google for a better explanation but essentially they can make between 3 and 5 unit's of heat for every unit of electricity used. This is called COP or coefficient of performance. To break even vs gas it needs an avg over the year or SCOP (seasonal) of 3.6 . Electricity might be 4x the cost of gas but gas boilers aren't 100% efficient. Heat pumps are being suggested as gas boiler replacements because yes they are greener. But after an expensive or sometimes not so bad upgrade - they are cheaper to run. Even with our expensive electricity at the moment. Just imagine how much cheaper it will be if and when the taxes get put on gas and not electricity.....

      @Lewis_Standing SCOP is 3 is indeed more expensive than gas, but I have storage so my average unit electricity rate is about 10p, so circa 3p per kWh of heat - just marginally cheaper than gas. I had similar issue 12 months ago. Octopus £4k vs next best £9k. Highest quote £15k. Octopus couldn’t install due to 10mm micro rad pipes but they were working on it. I decided to wait as £5k difference is huge and octopus would only install if they are confident to avoid bad reviews. 3 months ago (Oct 24) I received a call from Octopus that they are happy to install with existing pipes but 8/21 rads will be replaced plus new quote will be £3.2k due to Black Friday 20% off as an Octoplus member. They installed end of Nov 24 and the entire Dec was smooth in terms of heating and gave me 4.1 cop (space+tank). It’s a Daikin 8kW (heat loss 7kW @ 50/-2c). With me, they have been honest and didn’t play games.

    I think you mentioned that you were keeping 22mm primary pipework with a 12KW heat pump? This would be too small. You would likely need at least 28mm pipework for a load like this. The mass flow rate would be 12/5/4.2 = 0.571 KG/S 0.571x60= 34.3 KG/min or 34.3L per minute At a velocity of 0.9m/s you would need a pipe diameter (internal) of over 28mm so that would actually be 35mm pipe. You can tweak the velocity to say just over 1.1m/s you would be fine with 28mm pipe providing the runs are not too long. The water noise would be okay at this flow rate.

    • @Lewis_Standing
      @Lewis_Standing 2 дні тому

      @@Ifitaintbrokedontfixit yes I was worried about that too. You're quite right. However if we T off into that 22mm pipe work between the floors so that in one direction we have flow to downstairs and the 22mm can give the 6kw heat loss for there, and separately the other flow pipe to stay on the first floor and to join the top floor can take the combined 4kw of the upper floors. We think we're fine. The plan was for heat pump to that T being 33mm I think. I'll have to check the HG quote for that or course in case I'm misremembering . And that plan and surety is why I contacted HG first - but was not shocked at the price but motivated to find an alternative shall we say.

    Beware of heat loss surveys based upon EPC survey data. I'm an atmospheric scientist who decided to qualify as an Energy and Retrofit Assessor in my retirement while retrofitting my house with a heat pump, solar PV and batteries. Heat loss from buildings is complicated and the BREDEM model which underpins EPC heat loss calculations makes far too many simplifying assumptions to usefully determine the peak power requirement of an ASHP in any given property. The retrofit energy assessment is somewhat better but the gold standard for heat loss is the Passive House Planning Package. Unfortunately, I have never met a heating engineer who understands building physics and can use the PHPP- this is the preserve of passive house architects. Beware of MCS and heatgeek accredited installers. Their estimates of heat pump peak power requirements are likely to be inaccurate. However, in mitigation, good heat pump installers tend to learn from their mistakes and are less likely to trust EPC and other heat loss calculators. Choose an engineer who understands the importance of thermal bridges and airtightness.

    Assuming you have a smart meter, what was your gas use on the coldest days of the few years? That would give you an actual heat loss rather than just an estimate. Having said that, they probably have to go with the MCS official calculations in order to qualify for the grant. Also, radiators are fairly cheap and swapping a single panel to a double panel of the same length is often an easy DIY job. Even extending pipes is a quick job for a plumber. It's hard to see how they can justify a total cost of £20,000 unless they need to pull out most of your old pipes.

    Question - I’ve not done this calculation (but concede maybe I ought to as it may not be that hard to): given neither the 45° system or 50° system will be running at such high temps for more than a few very cold days per year, and given the likely low cost of electricity a well informed homeowner will secure with intelligent tariffs - isn’t it likely the additional costs of a 45° system simply won’t pay for themselves in a reasonable number of years?

    • @Lewis_Standing

      @@constructioneerful my theory was that all my rads needed swapping to achieve a 50c flow - and the difference between rads to achieve 50 and 45c might not be that large. The 45 system is running at 40 for many days a year, and the 50 system is running at 45 for many days a year. You are looking at a 0.5-0.7 reduction in SCOP either way. Have to do your math to see if there's ROI on this for your specific case, or not. Underfloor can sometimes be a good investment, as it massively increases comfort, home value, and can also massively reduce your flow temps.

    • @Lewis_Standing
      @Lewis_Standing 2 дні тому

      Oh yes by saying a certain temp flow rate - that would be the highest needed on the coldest day But you get annual predicted SCOPs based on that, on the assumption that it's mostly below that during the warmer months

    Just go with the Heat Geek install so it is done right. Only a part of the price is for the heat pump itself and it sounds like you are going to regret getting a SCOP lower than 4.0 even if Octopus somehow gets the energy price down. The Vaillant is a very good ASHP. The only reason to wait would be the cost, but you can be sure the government will chip in less in the future as the prices come down. I also have an ASHP and my only regret is not getting one sooner.

    That's weird. My heat loss came out as about 4.2kW with octopus and they are proposing to install a 4kW heat pump. The surveyor thought four radiators would need replacing but after the design was done, they're saying all seven need to be replaced. The Daikin is pretty noisy by spec so I can believe that that might need planning where a Vaillant wouldn't. I needed planning which is going through now, but it wasn't because of the noise level in my case. In your case it sounds like it makes sense to spend more for a better quality system. In my case I spend about £700 pa on heating and I'm really in diminishing returns territory so on balance I think I'm happy to accept the 50C design.

    • @Lewis_Standing
      @Lewis_Standing 2 дні тому

      Those are all really good points thank you. I'm a bit surprised they would undersize even at the low end. It might be that it's badged as a 4KW but actually can do a bit higher which could explain it. The nominal power labelling isn't regulated so it's a bit in transparent. You'd have to find the technical sheet download from the website. Sometimes it's easier to find them on a wholesaler website than the manufacturers. I completely agree re. It being more key to optimize a high heat loss home than a smaller one too

    • @robynrox
      @robynrox 2 дні тому

      I think it can produce up to 4.6kW from a data sheet I saw so there is a bit of wriggle room which should be enough, and from what I've heard, the heat loss calculations err on the side of being a bit too high anyway; standard worst-case engineering practice I suppose. The three bedroom radiators meet 98-99% of the size requirement and the other four are between 105-135% of the size requirement so as a whole, the radiators will be slightly too big to meet the design flow temperature so I can probably run a little cooler than 50C though not at 45C I suspect!

    • @Lewis_Standing
      @Lewis_Standing 2 дні тому

      Yes it would be sensible to do anyway if I had a condensing gas boiler. Only issue would be that you get VAT free ASHP installs when you claim the BUS voucher and includes labour for radiators and the radiator changes itself. any work done not as part of the ASHP installation first, or done after a ASHP installation to reduce the flow from 50 to 45 later would have to include VAT so be 20% more. Still might be sensible to spread costs 🤷
