Peter's message to the future Prime Minister
Переглядів 4821 день тому
Caring took Peter out of employment for 2 years. Until then, he'd never had to navigate the benefit system, and found huge issues in understanding it and getting the support he really needed to care for his wife. With a General Election coming up on July 4 2024, we wanted to know what message Peter had for the future Prime Minister. This is what he had to say. If you agree that it's time for go...
Nancy's message to the future Prime Minister
Переглядів 3921 день тому
Nancy has been a professional nurse for 50 years, and a full time unpaid carer for her husband for the past 8. She's found this challenging psychologically, mentally and physically. It took her a long time to realise she was a carer, and found it surprising how difficult it can be to find the support she needed from the health system, especially as someone who knew it so intimately. With a Gene...
Jaycee's message to the future Prime Minister
Переглядів 2521 день тому
Jaycee is a carer for her mum, and has been for the past 10 years, following her career as a nurse. Balancing work and care has been a challenge for her, with her reaching burnout a few times in her journey. She found that having to give up her career felt like a loss of identity, and she's found that very isolating. With a General Election coming up on July 4 2024, we wanted to know what messa...
Norman's message to the future Prime Minister

Norman's been a carer for his wife for the past 45 years. By the time Norman was 56, Ros's health had deteriorated to the point that caring for her was costing him half his monthly salary, and she'd had to leave work completely. With a General Election coming up on July 4 2024, we wanted to know what message Norman had for the future Prime Minister. This is what he had to say. If you agree that...

You claim over 8 million carers, your membership AFTER removing those carers that have died, stopped being a carer are? Less than TWO MILLION PEOPLE are eligible for Carers Allowance, carers are those unselfish people that keep your charity in business and your CEO's £80k - £90k salary. You have NO idea of our lives, you have NO MANDATE to speak for us, your charity is a disgusting con rivalling Captain Tom and his family

Carers allowance is a lot more complicated than this - there are all kind of hacks such as legitimate work expenses that can be deducted from your pay - such as a car on PCP you need for your job or a mileage or meals allowance, half your pension contributions, any tax and NI etc - and also, dont forget that the earnings threshold means just that - it only counts earned income - not unearned income from, e.g., a workplace pension or income from premium bonds or investments. If your income rises, it is usually better to top up your pension contributions - most schemes allow this.

Your state pension is counted earnings for this Allowance I applied as main carer for my husband and was told although I qualified my State Pension counted as a “benefit” and therefore I couldn’t be awarded it. We have worked all our lifes and we are now in our 70’s and never had state benefits. Another government con.

    • @carersuk557
      @carersuk557 8 місяців тому

Hi Phyllis, thanks for raising this important point. We understand that many carers are very concerned that they are unable to continue claiming Carer’s Allowance once they receive their state pension. We have pushed the government to review pension rules for unpaid carers, including taking actions that would enable carers to receive similar pension levels to those who are not carers. These actions include enabling unpaid carers to receive their state pension up to five years early and creating auto-enrolment payments for carers in receipt of Carer’s Allowance to ensure that they continue to contribute to additional pensions. You can read more about our recommendations to government on page 9 of our State of Caring report: www.carersuk.org/media/vgrlxkcs/soc22_final_web.pdf If you would like some information on financial support, our Helpline team can check that you’re currently receiving everything you’re entitled to. You can contact our Helpline team by emailing advice@carersuk.org

Hey Phyllis. Make sure carers allowance still award it to you- it's valuable proof to the council of your partner's need and your caring. It also acts to give a discount on council tax in most English councils reduction schemes, which can be valuable- particularly if you would only get a small reduction without (carers allowance) it.

It's ridiculously hard to claim even if your loved one needs intensive 24/7 care. The whole system and process is just going to make you want to jump off a bridge. Better to not put yourself and your loved ones through the nightmarish process and not bother.

Hello Bertie, Thank you for your comment. It sounds like this has been a really difficult time for you and we wanted to provide you with some information which we hope you will find helpful. We were concerned to read that you are experiencing suicidal thoughts. We would strongly encourage you to speak with your GP about how you have been feeling. Your GP may be able to suggest some local sources of support. It’s vital that you don’t have to deal with this alone and if you ever feel that you are in danger of harming yourself or taking your own life, please call 999 for an ambulance without hesitation. You may also find it helpful to contact the following organisations about the challenges you've been facing: • The Samaritans are available at any time to provide a listening ear and can be contacted by telephone on 116 123 or by email at jo@samaritans.org . • C.A.L.L. They are also for those times when we notice we are starting to struggle, or when we need extra support as we start to emerge from a particularly difficult time. Fair comment you have to be a carer for at least 35 hours a week to get paid £67 a week. This is less than the minimum wage. It’s £1.92 an hour As a carer you can not earn more than £138 a week. What are you supposed to live on? The cost of living is soaring. They reckon the average household will be paying at least £300 a month for energy It’s a joke the carers allowance A lot of people who need care are not getting it, They can’t afford to live on the carers criteria!

When my dad passed away he left some money. The government stopped the income support. Now I get £67 a week to look after my mam for 35 hours a week, pay for eye tests, dental and prescriptions. Less than £2 an hour, how is this even legal? Imagine this happening in the workplace, your savings reach a certain level and your boss cuts your wages by 25%. But it's ok to do it to carers.
