Cable Capacitance and Resonant Frequency (Your Guitar Tone)
In this video, I delve deep into the effect that cable capacitance has on the perceived resonant peak of your guitar pickups. This is something I have been interested in knowing, as I create pickups for my pickup company, JF Hummer Pickups. The pickup used in this test is a lower output humbucker I created as a prototype of one of the pickups that I'll offer for sale next year. This one will be a bit dry if you aren't into the nerdy side of your guitar tone. Hope you enjoy!

PRS SE Custom 24 35th Anniversary Edition (SE Custom 24-08): My Thoughts
Переглядів 2,2 тис.2 роки тому
This is a video on the PRS SE Custom 24 35th Anniversary Edition. This is virtually the same as an SE Custom 24-08. They have the TCI S pickups and the individual coil tap switches. I fell in love with the cleans the TCI pickups offer on this guitar, but when pickups are run through any kind of distortion or overdrive I have tried, they quickly become very lack-luster to my ear. Overall, it's a...
Swapping a Brass Baseplate in Humbucker Pickup with Nickel Silver. Plus, Pickup Giveaway.

In this video, I remove the brass baseplate of a PRS SE Pickup (HFS) and replace it with a nickel silver baseplate. there is a before and after sound test with the only thing that changed being the baseplate. I also go through the steps of swapping the baseplate. The results of this test are little easier to hear in person, but it was a fun test to do! I think you can still hear the results on ...
Deep Dive - Results of using capacitors to clean up muddy pickups
Переглядів 13 тис.2 роки тому
In this video, I show the results of using various capacitors to clean up the muddy neck pickup on one of my PRS SE Custom 24s. It is one of the more involved pickup mods (if you can call it that), but I was curious to see for myself the difference each one made across a broad range of values. If you go to guitar nuts 2 you will see all the pickup guys quote capacitance in their pickup graphs. And people will say you should scatter wind pickups because it lowers capacitance. But I think you've demonstrated it probably doesn't make much difference. People that concerned with tone will either have an EQ pedal or have an EQ pedal in their amplifiers anyway. If you want to do another test I would urge you to get a picking machine, since there's probably a lot of confirmation bias.

I bought a Chibson Les Paul in Black Friday times and I've been very lucky. Nothing to regret. 230 dollars to get a sort of Standard sound. I own an Epiphone Les Paul Limited Edition, I can recognize a Gibson Standard sound, and nothing sounds kind of Standard in my Epiphone Les Paul. On the other hand, my Chibson really does. It is crafted with real mahogany wood body, rosewood fretboard. one piece body, one piece neck, decent machine tuners. The strings height is pretty decent and playable after a fret leveling. I installed Gibson's Burtbucker 2 and 3 pickups, switched pots, electronics and I can hear that Gib. Standard sound in my Chibson that's not present in my Epi. I think you need to invest more than 170 dollars to get much more from a Chibson. Have fun with you can get and keep rocking on!

I put a cap on a push-pull pot for one of my guitars with a bassy neck pickup. When I play solo, I like the extra bass, but when I play in a group, it's too much so I kick on the bass cut.

I had been playing Kramers and Ibanez guitars for years, and recently acquired a PRS 35th SE. I cannot afford a standard PRS, so the SE is right in my maximum affordability range. I run mine through a Marshall Code 50. I love the clean channel ability of this guitar, and you are right on with the commentary regarding that. I honestly have no issue with the humbuckers and running distortion. I don't expect a "crystal clear" distortion sound. But again, I was used to playing some really "cheap" guitars for years (barely over 300 bucks). I honestly think a lot of the issues you are citing can be alleviated by replacing the pickups, which at this price point is very do-able. As for build quality, I have nothing high end to compare it to, but for me this guitar is substantially nicer in build quality, playability, and overall beauty than any guitar I have ever owned. I have the blue burst, and it's just an amazing looking guitar. I am very happy with it, and love how light it is and comfortable to play.

I think the first one was enough, it starts getting too quiet. I would hook it up to a switch and have it selectable, even a Rotary with three or four of them. .003426uf sounds the best, it retains the body while losing the low.

Fascinating… it’s something I might have experimented with many decades ago, with my first guitar. The only thing I’ll suggest here though is that - to my ears - it’s making the sound thin and ‘brittle’… and is defeating the purpose of the neck pickup. I wouldn’t play those ‘cleaned-up’ tones for blues or jazz… just my taste.

Great video, thanks! Just wanted to note, that 60 Hz and below are not related to muddiness, it makes the sound "too big", "boomy", "overwhelming". Muddy tone, that steals clarity, lives in low mid, in vicinity of 200 Hz. If you normalize "no cap" and 47 cap graphs at 3 kHz you will see that cap cuts around 4 db at 100 Hz, couple of dB at 200 Hz, and then less and less until "no cut" at 3 kHz. This cut above 100 Hz is responsible for less muddy tone, and also explains why it is not super efficient if pickup is too muddy. But if go lower in cup values, we loose too much of the signal lows (around 100 Hz), which leads to a more and more "castrated" tone, that may work very well in the mix though.

Give me a straight neck,Cheap frets can suck, but easily remedied. All the rest is lying around doing nothing.I need to buy an FRX for my SG and that is going to be more than the cost of that whole guitar.I would like to get Gold top P90s one and experiment With tremolo routing.I can put the bridge location where it belongs and don't have to cut up my real 1986 Les Paul. But SGs are so thin FRT wont work, but I have 3 of them.Or at least TP-6 Bridge system to lock down everything. They have adjustable roller Bridges for offset systems like yours.I put everything that does not lock down out of tune.Give me anything I will put it out.Because some people have no idea how shitty they sound out of tune.I do not care how well you play.Know a guy and after I put his TP-6 he said he sounds better,I said you have no idea,to me it is like scratching a chalkboard.Trying to play with an out of tune guy is a trainwreck and makes your playing sound out.He bought a garbage 450$ SG epiphone ,but loves it now.Pretty stupid to run a whole production of bodies and them all not measured out correctly.Bought a 7 string Floyd,Great tremelo for a copy but the bridge screw location screwed up.I just use it for chugging low end stuff.Shame the dam neck is straight and 24 frets.Sounds great with a Invader in it.Ready to relocate the bridge next string change.

It is funny because 90% of the things you think are related just to Chibson actually happens with real Gibson not to far away, miss alignments of the tuners, dis intonation issues because the tuners are basically something that is better to replace or the bridge is not what you expect in a big brand, fretwork had improved over the time but you really will be surprised about how bad it could be specially on tribute models same thing about the binding work sometimes it is awful, the nut is something that you need to upgrade. I don't know man I basically had the same issues on two original Gibsons a tribute DC ans a Les Paul Studio, I think is something related with validation bias but the real value of a Gibson is the people given value, and with it I don't want to sound like a Gibson hater (because personally I own 2 Gibson guitars that really love and are not precisely entry level Gibsons as the Tribute and Studio I talked about both are reissues of high level models) but the brand have its opportunities, so I think is better to care about your playing before giving a lot of attention on the instrument, obviously a great guitar is more enjoyable, but the best guitarists I know can play greatly even with a toy guitar

I dont know why you say they can never be a great guitar. I laughed when i opened mine too... because how good it looked for how cheap it was. Fretboard is straight, body is solid and actually very resonant so if you polish all the frets, put all new electronics in it, set everything up right, you can make it better than a real one.. I just got one for $100. and ordered 350. worth or parts for it.. Comparing it to my $3k real one.. I like the thicker chunkier neck on the chibson better and i think it will be better when im done... than the stock gibson.. They are very good foundations to build on... I wouldnt expect it to be golden out of the box.. I did a comparison vid on a real one and this one.. these are not a bad deal at all.

I changed the 50s wiring of my SG and made a bass cut wiring. The humbuckers are wired to the 3 way button and then the tone pots are wired in series. One pot has 0.022uf for treble cut and the other 0.0015 for bass cut. But the bass cut is only relevant to the neck pickup. Ant the treble to the bridge.

The one with the nickel silver baseplate sounds more open, with more "air". Just goes to show that the original design was well thought out. I still haven't heard a PAF style pickup with a brass baseplate that sounded pleasant to my ears, except maybe the rather low wound & low output Dimarzio Eric Johnson model. In most brass bottomed ones the higher end of the frequency spectrum that gives articulation is missing, regardless of the kind of magnet they use.

I really enjoy people buying $100 guitars and complaining about fret ends, pickups etc. IMO they're pretty good for the money you pay. If it was an USA made guitar, you couldn't even buy a 2inch toy for that money, or if you buy a guitar for the price of a real Gibson from China, it will make real Gibson a joke compared to it. They can get parts very cheap and labor is cheap there. So it's dumb to complain what you get for that price.

I have these US 245's in an '08 Mccarty II (with the unloved MVC). I play them passive, without batteries to avoid them going dead, which they will at the worst time. The US 245's are far superior to the SE's IMO, much better definition, clarity, more like a PAF than a Super Distortion. Think Clapton with Cream. I think you're using way too much drive here. Dial it back a bit.
