Daggerheart Actual Play | Episode 1: Stop! Hammer(ball) Time | Guardians of the Moon's Grace
A minor correction, and a bit of additional info, using the pre-made character sheet in your video: MINOR DMG = 1-8 (1 HP) MAJOR DMG = 9-16 (2 HP) [You mentioned "9-17" by mistake... 17 kicks to the next level] SEVERE DMG = 17+ (3 HP) MASSIVE DMG = 34+ (4 HP) [Double (x2) your severe threshold. This is an optional mechanic per your GM, but I find it an added layer of consequence and fun!] HP management is a super fun aspect of the game for "mathy" people like myself. Do I spend two armor slots in order to drop to the next threshold? ...or do I take Major DMG instead? Will I need those armor slots later in the fight? Strategy and complexity! All this said, the 2.0 (official release) version is supposed to change the armor system and thresholds, making it much simpler to use, but I don't want to give confusing info here for those playing in the 1.5 Closed Beta system. Great video! Y'all are entertaining and gave a great presentation!
We will ALWAYS take corrections on this channel, especially those related to math! Thanks so much for sharing the wisdom and checking out the video! And yes, the MASSIVE damage packs a punch. We cannot wait until the official release and to find out the fate of armor and damage thresholds!
Best warrior? Now I'm curious how it compares to Dungeon Crawl Classics' Mighty Deeds of Arms it's warriors have, which has been peak martial class design for a while.
Looks like we need to play s'more DCC! As a collective, we've only played once at a con (and loved it!).
DAGGERHEART!!!!!!! ™Seth
Short, sweet, and to the point! Outstanding video!!!!!! Thank you for your time and effort.
And thank YOU for this sweet comment! Glad you liked this one!
Nice to see update for the 1.5; not as many people have been updating with the rules! I'm so excited for the final release. Daggerheart has been so fun just make characters in: a perfect in between of narrative power and rewarding mechanics
YES! That is the perfect way to put what we love about this game into words!
👀
I love this and am grateful for the lesson!
Ok, so when are you going to play Daggerheart with us?
Need more than 2d12 so you can put the bad ones in dice jail. Clarification since you went by it super quick and people may have missed; Base physical game will have a rule book and cards for all the things (domains, ancestry, community, etc.). Digital places like Demiplane also have that digitally. (Since digitally was emphasized in the quick overview I didn't want people to think there weren't physical cards too.) (Also I guess important to note so when people like me break things with supplements, that would be physical only stuff.) Note for people who are feeling like noping out due to the armor math; at release you will just mark one armor slot, and it reduces the damage threshold by 1, so no complex math involved. One way I recommend people figure out Experiences is to consider a past job the character may have had, or a specific skill like. "Head Chef" or "Skilled Hunter". I think for a lot of people one of the tougher parts is narrowing things down. For me thinking along those lines pretty rapidly focuses thoughts. It's maybe not as flexible as something like "Former Pirate Captain", or "My reputation precedes me", but it's a pretty quick way to get something down.
You are so right, on ALL fronts but especially the Dice Jail one
Experiences are definitely the biggest shift from many other TTRPGs. Most of the games I've played (and I've played MANY from as far back as 1983) focus a character's expertise in explicitly-defined skills. Experiences, on the other hand, are *thematic* things a Daggerheart character is good at. To use AK's example, "I got your back" can apply to any roll where the character is attempting a tagteam attack, defending an ally, acting as a wingman in a social situation, or even offering emotional support - literally ANY action that fits the theme of having someone's back. Also: Your Daggerheart actual play streams really piqued my interest in Daggerheart and - honestly - I'm in love with the system.
Heck yes, we love you're in love! So are we! And, that's a great rundown of I Got Your Back, and the myriad of ways it can be applied.
Also, Fitz’s head on the Basic Rogue HAHAHAHAH
All credit to Matt for that!
You know what’s about to happen…
DAGGERHEEEEEART!!!!!
We were waiting! DAGGERHEEEEEART!!!!!
I love this game like WHOA
Me too me too! (Like that's not completely obvious!)
This is such a fun and engaging presentation! Where did you make it? Can you make it available for us to download?
Thanks so much! I (AK) just made the deck in Keynote! I'll have to check with the Community Gaming License and see what/how we can distribute physical things such as a deck before doing so, but it sure is cool to know there's some interest!
@ Oh no worries! I’d hate for you to get in trouble! Keep up the amazing work!
I'd subscribe to Bidets and Confused.
I missed this because the Dungeon Dudes were have casual livce chat Q&A at time, which stole my attention.
@@OpenWorldAddict0 We missed ya!
And we totally understand!
I'm curious what exactly are the feelings against Pirates. There's different kinds of pirates (having recently done a fair bit of research there are more 'good' than 'bad' in actual history), and since I'm working on a 2nd Daggerheart supplement called "Swashbuckler, Stoat, and more", there are different ways you could use a Swashbuckler class which aren't a type of pirate.
Hi, rabb! This is Matt, the anti-Pirate-lover of the group. To be perfectly honest, I'm just being kind of silly. I actually lived in Charleston, SC for 16 years, and had friends that lived in "the Pirate House", which had been a storage location with an underground tunnel that went all the way to the shore, so that the pirates (good and bad) could smuggle in some stuff. I think that I've just never been drawn to sea adventures, in general! and I can't really put a finger on why. But I would LOVE for you to change my mind about them all, with your upcoming Daggerheart supplement! Will you consider popping into our (free) Discord and keeping us posted on it?
@@EnterThePocketDimension Woowww so fancy. :) I can drop you the gods/patrons lore since teeecchnnically that's system agnostic stuff. I've only got notes on Swashbucker so far, abilities only go up to level 4, still working on the 3 foundations. (Yes, challenge accepted to make 3.) The rest is still mostly in my head. I reaally need to force the brain to finish the Dark Carnival stuff. I still have to work out the level 9 and 10 abilities for the class I have for that. Things get super nutty that high up so it's tough to narrow down.
Thanks for all the birthday wishes folks, sorry to anyone I missed in chat.
You're the best soul-snatching resident demon our realm could've ever hoped for, DT! Happy Birthday and thanks for today's shenanigans!
I had to take my meds one day when I was playing in a Warhammer 40k tournament and holy crap it made it much more enjoyable. I felt my mind wander less and I was able to focus on my tactics. Normally can focus for a 3-4 hour game but when you are doing 3-4 games in one day your brain can get pretty cooked by the end of the day. Don’t be afraid to take your meds to enjoy your hobbies (dnd included)!
Huzzah!! Go play a game with Kai! They run incredibly fun games!!
Aw thanks Seth!
Okay so 1) as someone who is deathly afraid of conflict because they weren't ever given examples of or training in healthy conflict as a kid this was STRESSFUL but also SUCH a good example of how to have these kinds of conversations. Huge kudos to you both! And 2) AK if ya want to learn to knit/crochet I will TOTALLY teach you, just say the word. :D
Yeeeeeessssssss! Let's start a Fiber Arts Club! Also, feel you on the being terrified of conflict front, but the older I get, the more I find myself surrounded by amazing humans. (My darling cohost at the top of that list, of course.) And the more you surround yourself with people who love the !#$!@* out of you, the more you realize the fear of the conflict is always worst than the dealing of the conflict itself.

My fav candy: Chunky bar (which I can only get at Cracker Barrel or online) Petalblossom Ironheart's fav (Daggerheart): It HAS to be... 3 Musketeers (those in AK's Halloween One-Shot understand)
I've been working on a spoopy supplement for Daggerheart (originally wanted to get it out in mid-September, but was told printed homebrew is forbidden until release) which is intended to add new elements on top of an existing campaign. But these spoopy ideas are pretty good. :) I may have to consider adding a new section on how to make the overall feel of the campaign the players are in more scary. :) (Or at the very least how to make the intended very scary encounters it contains more scary.) (Re: backstory / planned characters) Sometimes the unplanned thing is the more interesting path and story. (A big part of what can happen in my supplement is based on this.) Sure, let that player with a 20 page backstory play what they want, but I'd say next time you start a campaign challenge them to go in with no planning at all. See where they are taken in the moment. Maybe even go so far as after the others in the group have picked their choice (class, ancestry, community, etc.) pick something random from what is left. I have a similar feeling for criticals. Sure, they are great and sometimes just what they need, but consider that nat 1. The critical success takes you were you expected to go, but that nat 1 is going to take you somewhere unexpected, somewhere unfamiliar, and may lead to further story or adventure because of it. That crit that succeeds just, well, succeeds. It far less often will present new pathways or unexpected outcomes like a nat 1 can. I hope that Daggerheart players and GMs will see that with something like a high enough variance in a roll of Hope/Fear. If I ever get to GM I'd take a big difference, especially a failure, as an opportunity to introduce something new and unexpected in the player's path or the character's story.
I know that I am biased, but I love this episode. SPIDER BABY RULEZ
Thanks for your time and effort. This was a fun episode!
Particularly if you’re running a one shot, you can replace or add to the Hidden Agenda idea with a prophetic nightmare. Give them a twisted, or even wrong, clue to one of the encounters they’ll have. Share the clues around, either to a single big encounter or to different encounters. I’ve actually done a variation on this in a campaign a few times. It’s easier to do in some ways, because you know the characters and you can plant things weeks in advance. But the players then forget about them…
If you’d like to see Jester Villians, Tales of the Misfits had an arc in a carnival. It wasn’t played for horror particularly, but it was definitely weird, tonally.
For the loss of control and slow descent into darkness, the “roll with fear” mechanic gives you a lovely way to add a twist to features the players use so they do things more and more unexpected and dark.
Oh damn, co-GMing for Daggerheart could be really cool. You have a GM for hope and another for fear where you swap based on the result of the duality
@@EunoiaRPG Oh THAT’S a fun idea!
Expanding on the musical cue's One of the most fun sessions i have ever run was when i used the False Hydra. I set the audio to play white noise at 1% volume and very slowly increased the volume by tiny amounts. When something bad happens nearby, the white noise stops. Then after a little while i start it back from 1% Some of the players didnt realise how loud the audio was getting and when it shut off it was like it became *tooo* quiet
Be careful to check in with your players on things like that. Like I am sound sensitive, so something like that if I don't notice where the sound is coming from would cause me to pretty quickly become irritated, nervous, anxious, and violent feeling, without my knowing why I'm feeling that way. Which at the very least could ruin my ability to enjoy the game. (And things like that can take hours to 'calm down' from when you don't know the source and deal with it.)
No one else could make diapers this entertaining lol.
Biblically-accurate Fitz.
