Would the Chicago White Sox look any different had they not drafted Andrew Vaughn?
The Chicago White Sox could have taken Riley Greene, CJ Abrams, or Josh Jung in the 2019 draft instead of Andrew Vaughn. Since Andrew Vaughn has been a replacement-level player in his four years on the Southside, it is worth looking into if the Sox would be on a different trajectory had they gone with those options instead of a first baseman.
Listen to host Todd Welter breakdown why the drafting of Vaughn over those three players was flawed and never produced a second wave of elite prospects during the competitive window.
Then Todd dives into why pitching legend Mark Buehrle will never get voted into the Hall of Fame by the BBWAA. Finally, it is a Minor League Monday. Todd discusses the latest MLB Pipeline Top 100 rankings involving six White Sox prospects getting listed.

Great content
They sold pretty high on Crochet. It would be a mistake to trade Robert when his value is at it's lowest.
My friends and I agree. For a #3 overall, Vaughn has been a bust. He's an average hitter, slower than Ed Herrmann and terrible defensively. I'd rather give Tim Elko a shot. Let's see if he can hit .250 with 17 HR at a fraction of the cost.
Vaughn was the best hitter on that draft
No need to convince me. His numbers are aging better, looking more special each year!
No me e to convince me. His numbers are aging better each year.
I don't know what to think about him anymore he looks like he's still coming along but it just took way to long. I think we are all depressed about the record and we need hits/runs. When you look at who was taken after him George Kirby Corbin Carroll Riley green its just depressing
No one drafted would of worked out the whitesox coaching would of killed all these players
Vaughn still acts and plays like a prospect. In basketball terms he like a 6 or 7 man of the bench.
@@aRgelis_playstation and in basketball terms you could have had a starter in Riley Greene plus a bonafide building piece for the next good team. Instead you got to hope he has a decent year to be flipped at the deadline
@LockedOnWhiteSox I definitely agree with you. Love your podcast I always tune in from New Jersey. Go White Sox..
Absolutely not. In my opinion, he has been one of the few positives on this team. He hasnt matured as fast as we had hoped (HE IS ONLY 26), but still a guy who shows up every day and gives you everything he has. Andrew has to stay at firstbase for now
@@maverick1956hk this one I am going to slightly disagree and hopefully it is laid out in the episode even though I battled through this cold. I also lay out that I was banging the hope drum on Andrew Vaughn but I just can’t do it anymore. Hope you are well, and we can continue to have fun baseball discussions
@@LockedOnWhiteSox Vaughn could be one of those people who needs a fresh start with another team. I doubt that much can be gotten from a trade for him but he does deserve a chance with another team since he has been through the TLR infected, disfunctional team. Elko should get a shot and who cares if we lose another 100 or 110 games. It's a Reinsdorf team that makes the GAP owned A's look very enticing.......But they are doomed here in LV.......
I’m hoping Bobby Dalbec has a great spring, and pushes Vaughn, and pushes and pushes. I’d be ok, if Vaughn and Dalbec trade off, DH and 1st base. I was probably more frustrated with Vaughn than anyone, he could have drove in the game winning run in probably 20-30 games. Never got untracked in the first half. The big leagues abound in talent, the strongest mental players, exceed and have long careers. Sox fail immensely in that department. I hope Venable can reach and read this group. Sox fan for 65 years. Please, put forth your best, it’s not too much to ask for!
@ I’ll live with Bobby’s K’s if he can hit 20-25 home runs again
Not looking forward to having Vargas at 3B Sosa at 2nd or Vaughn at 1st A G A I N
I say keep and see what he can bring to the team until the trade deadline
We have to Build around him !!!!
Who? What? The store is bare.
@@sergiosanchez5385 and he will be gone by the time the Sox are ready to compete and 30
@@LockedOnWhiteSoxI agree with you
@@LockedOnWhiteSox sad reality I’m just heartbroken to see my idol leave
Yeeet yeeet 🎉
Ya know, sometimes you just take what you can get for a cancer. He is a very bad example for a young fledgling team. He plays hard when he wants to. Alot of times he is dogging it on the field. GET HIM OUT OF HERE.
He is a great talent. The problem is they failed to capitalize on supplementing a great group of players . You got the Andrew twins and that is just terrible . TA was soft.. Eloy was just not that thump you thought you had. It all came apart bad.. Just remember he was encouraged by other players for different teams to participate in the ALL STAR home run Derby.. I called it a curse . But that environment was bad..
Great show friend
@@skipgadberry3275 thanks as did the show under the weather
@ well done sir! You really do put on informative show. The White Sox are an under appreciated franchise in MLB. The Red Sox broke their World Series drought in 2004 and got all the glory but the White Sox won the next year and you heard nothing of their accomplishment. Thank you for the content
Luis Robert Jr might bring a hefty return if he does something he rarely does and that is stay healthy. He is so highly muscled up that he continues to get injuries year after year. Legs are a big problem with him. If he does stay healthy there is always the past injuries that will be held against him preventing us from getting a potentially effective player in return. If we pay him 2 million to go away, then we had a potential 5 tool player who failed to live up to expectations except for 1 year. It would be the final step in ending the previous rebuild. It would also leave the CWS without a CF'er. Fletcher can't hit and he was scary in CF last year. Perhaps one of the "free agents" Getz signed can try to play a functional CF. I can only hope that Braden Montgomery is not a power hitter who is only a .220 hitter at the MLB level. Teel may be a fair to middlin' catcher who can hit above .250 maybe. Meidroth(sp?) looks to be an on-base machine but does he have any range at 2B? I have heard nothing said about that ability. And is there ANY team speed or is this a slow team........I hope LRJ has a great 1st half of 2025 so we can move him for another, healthier OF'er.........110 losses this coming year predicted.......
(aka Maverick1956) Probably a good idea to not trade Robert YET. Lets see if he decides to actually hustle and play with heart this year. If he decides to play hard this year, THEN TRADE THE BUM OUT OF HERE.
I'll wait. I've done it for a time , some might call it long , but time is subjective. We'll since more than 5 rebuilds and since the post red uniforms.. SHOW ME THE RESULTS. The only smart G.M's I've seen is Roland Hemond and Larry Himes, they knew talent. Managers ,many stinkers but a few good ones, but 1 great . We'll just have to wait and see. Don't spend your money , until they accomplish results
2 btw, this one and the last one.
@@mariocisneros911 by the way, Sox need to bring back the red uniforms to wear on Sunday’s or the late 80’s gear.
If the White Sox lose less than 100 Will Venable should be manager of the year
Plausible at best
@@michaelleroy9281 I get the sentiment but even a 20 win improvement is sort of the speculated feeling. He probably gets some votes though
@@michaelleroy9281you're right on that . I can't see anyone not losing 100, not even a hall of fame managers
I'm definitely optimistic, but I'm playing the long game. I want to see individual players sieze big league spots by merit of performance.
2024 = 41 wins..for 2025, i add 10 wins just to even the law of averages, which makes 2025 at 51 wins. Then subtract about 10 wins froom the Crochet starts, its back to 41 wins, then add 5 wins by new Sox pitchers. That makes my White Sox win total for 2025 at about 46 wins. I am feeling very generous this morning. Jerry was very disappointed by the results in 2024 and what is he going to do about it ? Cross his fingers this year.
Crochet won 6 starts btw
@@aidenawe9359 But were there wins after they pulled him from a short start?
MUCH GUARDED OPTIMISM!! I have experienced 44 seasons of Jerry Reinsdorf. Every year you try to be positive and hopeful, THEN Jerry finds a way to cut your legs off.
Of course the Sox could exceed expectations, but dont count on it. Its always good to remain positive and enthusiastic. However lets also remain REALISTIC. Unless 4 or 5 players catch fire, I really dont see the Sox avoiding 100+ losses again. FIRST, GET RID OF THE CANCER REMAINING ON THIS TEAM - LUIS ROBERT. We dont need a player, who makes huge money, that plays hard when he feels like it. ROBERT MUST LEAVE FOR US TO START A NEW ERA.
Sign Pete Alonso.
Shuster was the WaR leader in the pen last season.
Have a feeling it will be 65-97
I'll take it.
@henrykonkel5065 gotta have faith
Everyone always hopes to see exciting young talent play well. Looking at last years roster I'm glad to see Yoan Moncada gone. He got a big contract, yes he was injured (a lot!), but he just looked lazy and like he didn't care when he was at the plate. Quite honestly so did Robert Jr. taking half ass swings, a quick strike out and then back to the bench. See if Robert Jr. can have a good first half and trade him, it's better than getting next to nothing for him now. If he doesn't play well bench him most of the time and see what kind of contract he gets next year from another club.
Robert is under contract til 2027 assuming club options are picked up
THANK YOU!! I'm glad someone else see's the apathetic effort of Luis Robert. He is a bad influence that needs to go!!!
I think there is a 10% chance of for Wsox not losing 100 games. Of course they had low expectations but not a lot of things would have to go right to be the most improved team.
I believe anything is possible until it is proven that it isn't. The only real way to find out is to play the games. I don't believe finishing 63-99 is out of the question. Sure it's not a good record, but it would be a massive improvement over 2024.
Facts, not a lot of things would go right in order to be the most improved team.
They could possibly be the most improved team in baseball and still lose 100 games
I just have a gut feeling ( been there, seen that ) that even should guys like Thorpe, Cannon, Schultz all become stars, they’ll just trade them for prospects
RIP Jeff Torborg. I was on vacation in Montréal when Torborg replaced Felipe Alou. Neither I nor the Montréal press and fans were happy about that. I found out at the game (I think it was the Phillies at Olympic Stadium) from another visiting fan.
Are you a Washington Nationals fan now?
@bigb8115 No, just couldn't. I left baseball entirely for 15 years after the 2004 relocation. I follow the Marlins now.
Sox only have control of players for 6 years. This is why the rush-em-up strategy of so many commentators is insane.
Barring an extension.
I think Robert is incredibly talented and I’m a Mets fan. I am sure we are still interested in OF’s, especially in CF. Robert is undoubtedly an upgrade for us at CF. That being said, you can only count on him for at best, 120 games a season. I don’t know that I’d give up Ronny Mauricio for Robert. Since We need Mauricio, Acuna, and Baty for 2B, 3B, and as a super utility player on our MLB roster. So, as a Mets fan, I’d rather give up an OF prospect like Benge or Gilbert. If things change with Alonzo, and Vientos can play 3rd, then I would be more willing to give up an IF prospect like Mauricio.
EDIT = White Sox winning World Series by 2133
What Jeff Torborg did with that 1990 team was simply amazing!!! The greatest job of managing a pitching staff Ive ever seen. Of course THE JERRY fired him because he stood up to Him & Kenny.
He is injured. The Me is injured Mauricio.
