Stop and Go Pocket Tire Plugger Vespa Repair
I'm looking for comparison between the dsports, and what a lot of people are saying are great for a DRZ400S which is the d606 rear and mt21 front. If anyone is aware of a comparison between these different tire combinations please let me know and maybe drop a link. That would be great.
How was the sound comparison on the road?
@@MrJcosenza79 I'd say the same - you can slightly hear the whine of the rear lugs at some speed.
Do you ever flip the dsport front? I realize it is directional but on road they cup more
@@666dynomax Nope, 4-6k out of a $50 tire is enough for me
@@mattbillenstein good point. I may look at dsport. That's phenomenal mileage for the money. They're on my radar. In reality the waypoint is prob more suited to my measured on / off-road use but man I'd give up a lot of road manners for that off-road tire when it's required. I'm super pleased with my d606 rear. Front I'll switch to something else.
D606 was wornnout in 2k miles. Not sure how yoh got 4k. Lol
just got platinum on PS5 from this thank you
Hey Matt you inspired to me to get one 2011 to leave it like your bike 🏍️ ❤
I was struggling as well with my brother until I saw this thank u this helped us all💜 People who thought this helped👇
Awesome overview, this is the dream!
Good stuff man, my dream dual sport trip right there 🍻
I have 4000 on a front Dsport. Love it!!
Do you need a state issued off-road permit to do any of the BDRs?
I didn't, it was covid tho, so ymmv.
Any chance you can share these GPX tracks?
They are not mine to distribute and the BDR tracks are out of date - you can find them at ridebdr.com - they just released Norcal yesterday and Oregon last year, so you could use those now instead of the gpsKevin Pacific Divide Route tracks if you like.
Nice gas tank!!!
What pressure di you run at on the highway? Your front was about the best one ive seen from both these tires.
Generally 18-20 psi, bike is light and I'm not carrying much. I'm able to avoid pinch-flats on the trails, not have too harsh a ride on the washboard, and it handles pretty decent on the pavement.
Good stuff, man. Keep it up, you're quite listenable.
I sit a lot when riding. I think it’s from when I started racing Moto Cross. I just lift my butt off the seat when obstacles appear. 😢
Thanks for the video
14:45 did anyone get three stars?
I hadn't noticed I'd only got two stars, but if you start with e6 instead of moving the bishop there is a solution where you promote that gives three stars...
9:26 In this room, if you also bring the second red cube from the previous red tree, you can just transform a red cube in yellow and take it out by the entrance doing infinite stairs with the 2 red cubes, so you don't have to go through the long way to bring back the green/yellow cube. I discovered this by myself and actually thought it was the only way. And I'm pretty sure it's faster than the 5/6 minutes you take to bring back the green/yellow cube
Ok I wrote before you said you needed the second green/yellow later, I'm only at 20:50 for now in my run I guess I'll understand the need of the second green/yellow cube later. I'll come back to this video if I'm stuck !
@@BakaLorehat Yeah, I think it'll become apparent at about 32:00, lmk if you find a faster way.
Thank you for taking your time to do this. Such a clever solution!
This looks like a GREAT time!
I had a good time - highly recommend one or two months a year riding in the back country if you can afford to do so!

Is any of this the BDRX3 ALT Harder - Bear Mountain
Nice video. I have run a D606 front before on one of my DS rides only to experience severe front end hunting (wandering) in sand. It would follow other tire tracks and start moving all over the trail. Tried different air pressures. No change. Other experienced riders I know and trust claim the same. This seems to be caused by the chevron tread pattern. I removed it after the first ride ride and mounted a more symmetrical (don't remember what) tire with knobs going straight across the profile. Straight tracking. No more D606 for me. It also seemed narrow for a 90/90. The Tusk D-Sport front also has the same chevron tread pattern. Does it respond with the same hunting in the sand? And it is as narrow as the D606? What about the D605 compared to the D606 and Tusk? Getting geared up for the UTBDR in September and need a good front tire. Will be running the D-Sport 140/80-18 rear. They work pretty good in most situation and mileage is great. Thanks
I guess I haven't ridden enough sand to really notice - or enough tires to know the difference? Maybe I'll try a different front next time.
@@mattbillenstein I highly suggest the MT21 for a front; bites like crazy and has good wear attributes. The D606 rear + MT21 front is legendary in the DS/Enduro scene for a reason!
I'm sold on the D606 due to the super stiff sidewalls. Had a pinch flat on the ftont and not aware until i checked air pressure late that day. Think i could ride out on a rear flat if i had too. Would just zip it to the wheel just in case.
The DSport sidewall is stiffer - actually makes mounting the tire a PITA imho
What was your off road vs on road percentage?
Roughly 80/20
@@mattbillenstein tyvm!
@@klxcountry The D606's fitted new did UTBDR, AZBDR, CABDR, and some slab connecting that together. The DSports got NMBDR, COBDR, and the continental divide tracks in both states - so pretty similar terrain.
@@mattbillenstein excellent info, much appreciated!
@@klxcountrySame here.... Still pondering my 650L next tire combo....
Matt: Great video. I'm looking at purchasing a 1988 Cat Capri as well. Anything I should look for when inspecting it?
They're simple boats only having an outboard - I'd just look it over, make sure the gelcoat is all sound and whatnot. This was a bit too small a boat for where I was in the SF bay imo; there gets to be a lot of wind out there coming under the bridge, but it was a pleasant little boat to sail on on less windy days.
@@mattbillenstein Understood. Anything to look for on the condition of the wing keel? Do you know if you can put perch seats on these Capri's?
@@pauldavidson2520 Inspect the bilge and keel bolts - I'd expect this to be very clean since there's really no way for water to get in there on this boat. Re perch seats, I'm not sure - the rear rails I wouldn't think are really good for supporting them. The cockpit is fairly narrow and the tiller low - I would sit on the combing in the rear corner if I wanted a higher vantage point.
@@mattbillenstein Do you know if you can replace the fiberglass hatch with a clear see-through hatch?
@@pauldavidson2520 I suppose you could find one that size without a lot of trouble, but I never looked into it.
any issues w oil migration?
Yes, a bit, imho if one wants to keep this bike, it should have a single sump conversion which I believe is basically drilling a hole between the two sides of the engine. I've since upgraded to a 2021 500 exc-f - and the new bikes don't have these problems as they're single sump. There's only 1.2L of oil in the entire engine.
For the rears would you say they are comparable in weight? One carcass seem stiffer than the other?
The DSport definitely has a stiffer sidewall; I found it significantly harder to mount by hand. I didn't weigh them though, so I wouldn't say it's significantly heavier - not sure.
Visions of Dark Souls.
thanks i was having so much trouble on the 4th queen one
Gr8 vid! !!! 👍
Matt, where'd ya park your truck to keep it safe?? Thanks for the post!👍
I staged out of the Santa Fe regional airport - I think it was $3/day, no problems. I've used regional airports a few times for this - they're pretty chill and not typically that expensive.
I've wondered this myself about riding BDRs. You leave your vehicle somewhere then ride the route one way and then back? Or do you make arrangements for someone to meet you at the end? My limited brain power hasn't been able to work this out ! 😂
Impressive! Oregon BDR route being released in early 2023. Did IDBDR last September and will do WABDR next Aug.
Good stuff, I'm looking forward to ORBDR and hopefully I get to do WYBDR this coming year.
Older post but hopeing you still answer... Would it be possible to get a gps file from you with this route? Thanks for any help.
Hey George, they're not my tracks to distribute - ridebdr.com and for norcal/OR gpsKevin's Pacific Divide Route: www.gpskevinadventurerides.com/self-guided-rides/pacific-divide-route
Hey Matt. Great video. Your video popped up in my feed and I really enjoyed the simple format you for your video. I also use Gaia and I saw that you had Gaia as your route. I am working on a route and your big loop was a great inspiration for me. Couple of Questions 1. Curious to know if or what exactly you used for navigation? Phone or a GPS unit. 2. Also what would you say your daily average was for your costs including Hotels, Food and fuel? 3. It would be cool to see a video of all of the items that you took on the route. Tools and equipment for example. Hope you have time to respond and I look forward to more videos in the future.
Hey Bill, I carry a couple older iphones I put on a mount on the bar running Gaia - I don't care if the camera gets destroyed in them due to the vibration, my current phone I carry in my pocket for taking pictures. Costs, it's not a cheap way to go; the hotel is expensive if you're by yourself probably averaging $120/day. Food and gas perhaps another $20-40 depending on what you do. I made a video on tools: ua-cam.com/video/VOVKwUbWe3k/v-deo.html I carry a front tube and tools to change that tube into either the front or rear. And gear, I carry just this yellow backpack on the tail, and the stuff in the red bag I'm wearing -- details here: ua-cam.com/video/3OJZdzofoCg/v-deo.html Most of my riding is in the summer, so I don't carry cold weather gear, just a light windbreaker I can pull over the rest of my gear should I get cold at elevation. And I don't carry much for rain gear - I've gotten wet a few times, and I've not gone riding once or twice because it was raining. In the west in the summer, it hasn't generally been a problem. Have fun on your adventure and hit me up if you have any other questions ;)
@@mattbillenstein Thanks for the input. I just watched a bunch of your other videos. Very helpful and keeps the juices flowing for an adventure this spring.
I have about 1k miles on the d sport on the rear,I hope I can get 4k out of it . I got about that much out of the original 605. Still running the 605 in front at 5k , no plans to replace it yet I expect it'll go to at least 6k.
'So I can sip my vanilla latte and listen to NPR' ,,,,,,,,CLASSIC! Thanks for keeping it real.
Curious if you've ever owned a GS, since you said you wouldn't want to ride that Section on a GS? Don't get me wrong, I would avoid that Section with my current experience level, but it doesn't look THAT bad.
I had an R1200R for a number of years, but never a GS. Of course, it all depends on the skill of the rider, if you look at 12m in, a fall there on a big bike might be tricky to recover. I ride mostly alone, so I like knowing I can muscle the bike out of almost anywhere by myself. And these challenge sections aren't as well traveled as the main route, so you don't always know what you're going to get into. Also, most cameras flatten out the terrain (esp GoPro's with the wide angle lenses) - anything you see in youtube, take with a grain of salt as to how difficult it looks.
It helps a lot to have someone talk through these problems, so thank you! I was stuck at the zwischenzug problems
I have the same tank on my 530. Seems that the petcocks are quite a bit lower than the fuel inlet on the carb. Gas will not flow below below that level. Have you noticed that? What did you do to fix? thx
I guess i never ran the tank that low - I've upgraded to the efi bike with a 4 gallon tank - similar 200+ mile range carrying much less gas. The ride i did today got almost 60mpg - easy mostly paved stuff at moderate speeds...
Good stuff dude!! You are riding some serious miles, good for you. Kum and Go - haha... My buddy in Wisconsin, where they have a bunch of these, said they were named by a Man, cuz if it was named by a Women, it would be Kum, and then snuggle a while !!! Hahaha I like your style
you need to get with the BDR guys to get north CA done.
They are very secretive about talking about future routes - I think ORBDR next year, have no idea when norcal might be released - 2024 perhaps?
On second set of D-Sports on a DRZ400. Love them. great on the street (a bit noisy and bumpy but not bad) and great on most surfaces, including sand. I have no idea about rocks or wet rocks as I live in Florida. But for the price, their wearability and great consistent performance have won me over. I run 18 psi rear, 22 up front on all surfaces (carcas seems still, could likely hold wear even with lower pressures) and get 4k miles at least with lots of dirt riding and street riding to get there. Prior, the most aggressive Ive run were pirelli scorpion pro. Very expensive, wore out quickly, very bumpy on road. Also, the traction on the D-sports are slightly less than pirelli in sand, but more consistent. Pirellis traction held on turns until they didn’t, then nothing. D-Sports hold a little less at extreme but slip gradually allowing me to recover extreme cases.
hello what is the PSI that you are riding with those tire....
~20, i think you're more likely to pinch flat lower
I have a set of D606 on my DR650 and I have maybe put 1500 to 1800 miles on them and the rear is half worn and the front has every other center knob gone, all the other center knobs are worn from back to front even though I put it facing the correct direction, its almost like I've been riding in reverse. The front also has the belt showing already. Now I'm buying the Trailmax Mission tires to see if I'm staying with Dunlop
odd, what tire pressure? more pavement or dirt?
@@mattbillenstein I think I was running 30 or 35 psi and I was on more road han dirt. Wasn't sure if my wheels weren't balanced right or what but it looked like I had been riding in reverse the entire time. I had them going in the right direction so I know it's not that I had them on backwards
@@austinsuman4090 yeah, I wouldn't expect them to wear great on mostly pavement - kinda the tradeoff running a dual sport tire
I'm currently running a set of D-Sport tires as well. They still have a lot of life left but even so I've kept an eye on what to get next. I'd like to try something different just to get some variety but when I consider the cost and performance of the D-Sport versus the other options on the market, I keep coming back the D-Sport. Rockymountain certainly did a good job with this tire.
Same, they're a very good value.
The problem with motels for this country-boy, is that they're in CITIES with PEOPLE. The forest is where I NEED to spend the night! I totally agree with your ride-times per day, the mornings and the evenings at camp are some of the best parts of any big ride for me.
