Bro, ist's Silnylon!
So around 6:10 the staking is wrong. You're meant to use the guy outs that are a little way down the side form the corner so that the inner is at a strange position relative to the outer rectangle shape between the 4 outer stakes. This means two extra stakes are needed for those two guy out points. It does work really well in creating a taut inner and ensures separation from the outer. That said - I'm curious about your modification and will try it as it's a nice idea to reduce the number of required pegs anyway!
What's important is that the staking is taught. The tent is designed as two separate rectangles. One bigger outer rectangle over a smaller inner rectangle. By my count, its a minimum of 8 stakes for each rectangle corner.
Hello, have you tried modifying the internal mesh? I find it unnecessarily loose and sinking into the sleeping area.
I haven't but should look into it. The issue is that the internal mesh needs to have separation from the outer fly or will leak if it rains.
Really good video. I've done similar with the Lanshan 2 Pro, and also put shockcord on my Yunchun 2 but never thought of using the shockcord to redesign it. It would definitely speed things up as I always get a little confused where I should put the inner!
Thanks! It took us a while to understand how it's supposed to be pitched. Once we figured that out, and realizing that the tent design is a rectangle within a rectangle, the inner needs to be placed at the same spot each time, so we thought we could use shock cord to help. We also like the feature that we still retained the original design if the ground doesn't like the 4 stake pitch. Let us know how you make out!
As a side note, we used the Lanshan 2 Pro a few weeks ago and while I adore the tent, I believe it's been replaced be Asta Gear Yun Chuan 2. We'll do a video on it soon.
You guys rock! Enjoy that Eastern canada vibe! Love the details in video!
Thank you! If you want to do a collaboration, let us know!
Are you guys managing to pitch the inner tent as tight as the outer, without the corners peeking out from under the outer tent? I can't seem to properly align the short sides of my inner tent, causing it to be quite baggy. It feels like its either too wide, or the space between the stick is too narrow.. Or I'm probably just botching it 😂
Yes. We have another video up where I should you how to pitch it properly. I also demonstrate how to pitch everything with just 4 stakes. It's located here ua-cam.com/video/6HaDaZmQtpc/v-deo.html
Hello, good video. Is there a way to set up the tent with a 125 cm pole? Greetings from Chile.
Hello! We have experimented with trekking poles at 125 cm and it does work. It may not be as taught as 135 cm trekking poles (Asta Gear's recommendation). Also, make sure the tent stakes are as deep in the ground as you can get them, and that the tent is as low as you can tension it with the guy lines. If it is still not taught, you'll also need to stake the tent out with a few more stakes and tension those guy lines too.
I can't believe you actually made a video of yourselves supporting a pirate company who copied this exact tent from Durston Gear. The original ones doesnt even cost too much for the effort it took them to design, and implement changes to improve the tent. Support the original makers!
I'm sorry you feel that way. We are simply evaluating a tent that we paid for with our own money. Since, it is our own money, we do feel that we can spend it where we want.
@@WrightsOutside Not everyone can afford to buy the xmid, especially if you don't live in the US. The cost is around $600 after shipping where I live. That's premium tent money right there. Thanks for sharing this, I'm going to try this mod on my tent too!
@@paulchec3243 Thank you! We were going to include similar comments in our post above. We live in Canada and paid about 40% of the cost of an X-Mid 2. I think we can all agree that hikers should have an option of good affordable gear. Let us know how the modification works for you!
Good review hope you both enjoy the tent. I always liked the original 2016 Sierra designs high route all these tents are similar too.
@@nathanielrose30 The 2016 Sierra Designs High Route tents was the *first* for this type of design. Thanks for pointing that out! And thank you for the comment!
Dude there's some weird graphics glitches for me when watching this video. Maybe the rendering process messed up? Just a heads up
Thanks! I took a look at the render and it's there too. I'll keep an eye out for it again in the future!
@@WrightsOutsideyou're welcome. I'd be interested in your experiments with the tent especially how it manages with uneven ground as that's my main concern that keeps my from pulling the trigger on it. Maybe you'll find the time to take some video of your testing. It would be mich appreciated. Cheers from germany
@@bruellaffenbaumd7159 Awesome! It's nice to meet you! I think we finally understand the design, so we're going to do a pretty interesting testing video here soon! We'll record our findings.
@@WrightsOutside looking forward to it :)
Superb tent, I love mine. What's your thoughts about which way up to put the poles, I'm concerned about putting the bottom end of my trekking pole pointing upwards into the eyelet on the inside as I feel it's going to cut through the flysheet fabric at some point. I've made a video if you want to watch it with the poles the other way up, with the handle at the top, I'm not convinced that's great either 😂
Thanks for the comment. This was our first time pitching the tent and we used the trekking pole handles with the eyelet. I've never thought about using the bottom of the trekking pole with the eyelet but my general feeling is that you'll puncture the tent fabric and also the tent would lose stability. From a physics point of view, I believe you want the weight of the tent on the trekking pole handles, which in turn drives the bottom of the trekking pole into the ground.
@@WrightsOutside I agree but I'm pretty sure when watching everyone else's videos they put the base of the pole in the eyelet, sounds wrong to me and when I did it it looked like a lot of pressure on a tiny area, again like you say the larger head of the pole spreads the pressure. Anyway, I look forward to more vids, I prefer your outside stuff than indoors, just some hopefully positive feedback. Cheers from the UK
@@camping_guru_uk Thanks for the feedback. We appreciate it! I did stumble upon an official Asta Gear Yun Chuan 2 video where they pitch the tent. Asta Gear pitches the tent with the handles up. It is located at ua-cam.com/video/22Zqqqo6mqk/v-deo.html
