Idol History: From Motown to Ktown
I posted a video on Tiktok about idols recently and got a lot of comments saying that Kpop & Jpop are just copies of western pop groups. While this is somewhat true, history is never that simple and contemporary Kpop and Jpop have evolved into their own genres throughout the decades, as these industries have been around domestically long before it hit western markets.
But let me know if you agree or disagree & thanks for watching!

You can definitely live the cottage core life depending on location. I live in Sweden and have spent countless summers in different cottages around Sweden picking mushrooms and berries in the forest, swimming in lakes, eating dinner (usually grilled) in the garden or on the porch.

People change. So do styles and tastes. As you said, I think people should wear whatever they want. In my eyes, there’s nothing wrong with (ie) wearing « punk » inspired clothing without really following the punk mindset if you like the way it looks - or following a « punk » mindset without being dressed to show it (bc of many reasons like money, self-confidence, comfort, health issues, etc…). Some people just want to enjoy what they like without the feeling of « being labeled/thrown into a box », if that makes sense. However, that doesn’t mean there isn’t a limit, if I can say it like that, and these « aesthetics » can become disrespectful of the subcultures they are inspired by (and social media encourages this lack of respect by making trends where people just jump from one thing to another and throw everything out of the window in order to be trendy). We should never forget where those « aesthetics » come from, and respect each other. No hate or disrespect at all in this comment, just a personal opinion and (possibly) a language barrier, as English isn’t my first language. Thank you for this video :)

love your commentary on so many relevant (but also not widely discussed) topics. i think about cultural, generational differences and similarities quite a bit, and you touch on so many of the things i've reflected on but also with layers of research and insight that is novel. thank you for putting these video essays together. really beautifully done.

When a person brings up the “death of subcultures” it tells me that they either don’t go out to shows of that subculture and thus are the exact person they claim to be speaking out against, or that their local scene is dead and they don’t wanna venture out

I'm an older gen-z who grew up largely off the internet and (imo) experienced the tail end of punk culture. For me, at the time it, was definitely more of an ethos/life philosophy. The actions of individuals back then held more weight than their shared aesthetic or individual style, whereas among today's punks I feel it's inverse. My initial reaction to the mass-market commodification and popularization of punk aesthetic was at first somewhat morose, because to me it solidified the sense that punk was dead and never coming back. The commodification of punk is diametrically opposed to the idea of punk itself. This feeling was only further cemented through discussions with peers on this topic who, as your video highlights, don't think punk is dead, because they view it merely as an aesthetic or fashion trend. Although, I guess this could be a good thing, because as long as the aesthetic remains in popular culture, there will be curious people who spend time learning the history behind it, and in a sense that means punk is alive. Or, subcultures, and even larger cultures themselves, are in the rapidly accelerating process of dying through forced socio-technological amalgamation. I guess we have to wait and see. Cool video 👍

as an animator, I totally agree with you, but what happens with most companies, in my opinion, is that they're in a testing phase, like they don't want to spend too much on this until they're sure it's going to give them something big in return, at least the big companies. Small companies on the other hand simply don't have enough resources to do everything perfectly, this group superkind, the project they talk about is actually unlike anything I've seen in the kpop industry, but then again they are from a small company so not everything can be done yet, but looking at the details they are really trying something new.. it's interesting, but like you said they need to be more open to going crazy with the looks and the animations, yk or they won't stand out anyway

  • @SomeRandomPunk

Personally I see aesthetics as just a cover up for involvement in a subculture, I dress like a punk because I am a punk, I have leftist ideals and I like punk music. It’s very different to just wearing something because it looks cool. My clothes and music taste have diy roots, and that’s what makes a subculture, ideology, fashion and music. There are still youth today who follow that idea. Some however just follow trends, the complete opposite of what a subculture is. This is a really well made video btw :)

  • @Kotifilosofi

You're point on. The fundamental of subcultures is the community and the shared cause. Aesthetics lack both of these, they just literally copy the visual aspect of it and leaving everything else out. Call me old, but I find it sad that the photos taken today don't represent the real life anymore but rather they're like miniature advertisenments of one's personal life. We've lost the authenticity and we don't live our lives anymore irl but rather think we do trough the staged photos.

Aesthetic just takes subcultures and turns them into high school cool kid cliques. I’m not going to welcome you into goth or metal just because you look cute in black. Music based subcultures are also very much about the values expressed in the music. Punk is a great example. So is grunge. Both reject a lot of the mainstream culture. They reject caring about fashion, having to fit a beauty standard, being judged by buying the right brands and popularity, etc. I agree that you cannot kill a subculture. But every time trendy people have tried to co-opt this shit, it’s a bad time for the art and music, and the people in it. I work at an alt bar. The ‘aesthetic’ people truly think that they should be welcomed with open arms. A girl got mad that she couldn’t film people for her IG live, because they didn’t know her and didn’t care about her 200k followers. This same girl demanded we change the music for her. She was mad more people showing up were there for the local thrash band than to hang out listening ti Taylor Swift with her in the bar room, because she didn’t want to go in the event room and hear the music. She had several complaints about her just being entitled and was shocked when she was asked to leave for it. This has apparently happened a few times recently, not to this extent, but along the same lines. I’ve been there when the ‘aesthetic’ people have had little tantrums because they kept touching other bar goers clothing, and when they were asked to stop, they pulled the ‘why do people like you always have to be mean to hot people?’ Don’t even get me started on the guys who will come in and admit ‘I bought this outfit from a brand called black craft. You guys wear that, right? This is what goth chicks like guys ti wear, right? Do you think I’ll get laid?’ It may not be ‘killing’ the subcultures, but it’s annoying the people in them. Most of us either didn’t fit in, or didn’t want to fit in with the mainstream because of people like this and the unfortunate social power they often have. We don’t want you in our spaces. If you are not part of our scene, be respectful, be humble, and don’t act like a bar full of strangers should be honored by your presence. We aren’t impressed by popularity, money, looks, or what brand you wore, so try impressing us by being better people than these annoying examples.

Very well said but damn that's a hell of a story, especially the "why do you have to be mean to hot people?" Did she actually unironically say that because that's just... Wow lol But aside from that, I have seen this kinda mentality in the goth scene, they are the ones who usually call those of us within scene as "elitists" or "gatekeepers" when we explain that goth is a music-based scene and in order to be a goth, you have to have some likeness for the music. And the "gatekeeper" accusation is very annoying because most of the time we're not and if anything, we're happy to recommend bands to people genuinely interested in learning about the scene.

I'm glad that you acknowledge that K-pop got it's ideas from Motown and J-pop/Johnny's. I see a lot of K-pop fans say that black people have nothing to do with it's creation. Also, even though Johnny was a demon, if he didn't create Johnny's & Associates, then we might not have Asian idols today. I hate that I like some of his groups before knowing what a evil person he was. He better be burning in hell!
