    Great idea. But who validate all these experiences and skills acquisitions? A teacher, an AQA Skills assessors, City & Guilds?

    Great concept - the traditional portfolio converted into a digital portfolio. A lot more work for pupils to compile and it will need a member of staff coordinating it all. But what about pupils - sanctuary seekers- who have newly arrived from abroad with English as a second language? How will this work for them? And will further education institutions put those students at a disadvantaged for having an incomplete Learner Profile?

  • @JulianGee
    @JulianGee 2 роки тому

    I was delighted to see the reveal of the Learner Profile a few weeks ago. It's a very strong concept and if adopted widely will get schools off the hook of the 'exam factory' system we have at present, which has few supporters it would seem (please let me know if you know of any organisation making a coherent argument for maintaining the status quo, as I would be genuinely be please to read it). The acid test of course is will sufficient schools, employers and young people whole-heatedly adopt the Profile to make it viable? However, those promoting it have my very best wishes for its success.

    I've been working with a school district to create the profile of a successful high school graduate in the year 2035. Why so far on the horizon? Because the graduate in 2035 begins Pre-K in 2021. Structural change takes a long time in public schools, but you can start now. The biggest challenge isn't the school administrators or teachers. It is building support for change in the community.

    There is nothing more powerful than a teacher saying to their students "don't believe everything people say, not even me". Find your own answers and question everything!

    I asked the question years ago. When my first child started into school. Has America gotten any better in the world in test scores since 1990's??? I was dismally disappointed. But just as I suspected deep down in my heart..... America's education system was still FAILING!!! And now that my kids are using a system called "common core" I'm even more disappointed in America. Simon and people that get behind ideas like this can change America. And they should. www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2017/02/15/u-s-students-internationally-math-science/

    Teaching is the result of a deep love and curiosity for a subject that results in discovery so exciting they have to be shared. What do you do when you learn something surprising about something you thought you knew? You tell everyone that will listen. That's teaching. We need to get away from the corporate-sponsored idea that education is about jobs. It's not. It's about life. I went to a parochial school as a child. The nuns didn't so much as teach me what to learn as how to learn and developed my curiosity by allowing me to explore connections between subjects. It never occurred to me that there might be kids who couldn't do what I did intellectually. I've always understood the need for and influence of great teachers for me, but Simon's story really illustrates the essential fact. Great teachers make learning accessible.

    Place in the life of students, each school day, the very best, the most buoyant, the most loving role models as teachers who are salient support people for their learning experiences and let these teachers ensure their students have LEARNING experiences that excite curiosity, ignite intellects and satisfy the need to BELONG and RELATE by this we will have in our midst a community who are more alive and further equipped for life. The fear factors around change sit as 'elephants in the room' change requires both humility and courage from all who desire to educate well.

    I think we are in a time of infinite possibilities, however, those possibilities are born from knowing that each person has a purpose in life. Education draws this out of communities and individuals and it can be awfully difficult and challenging at times
