Spelling reforms/changes and language policy development in the countries of the former Yugoslavia
I will present how four research dimensions - speakers’ attitudes, media coverage, methodology of orthographic codification, and socio-political context of Bosnian, Croatian, Montenegrin, and Serbian - can make a descriptive model of spelling reforms/changes in the 1990s and 2000s, providing a better understanding of the phenomena of orthographic conflicts.
This is the presentation I was given at the AILA 2021 congress in Groningen, NL, 15-20 August 2021 as part of the Symposium138 Language Policy: Theory, Method, and Advocacy for Contemporary Geopolitics.
