Ice Dyeing Warp Yarn In the Muck vs Over a Grate
Join me for my second attempt at dyeing my own warp yarn. This time I compared ice dyeing over a grate to "in the muck" (the waste dye run off) to get two different looks.

    The "wire with the curly bit" gets pulled around so that it is as close to the handle you use for winding. Then it clicks into place. Also the farther away the ball of yarn is, the better.

    Very interesting dyeing technique. Do you think the colours would have been more vibrant is you had pre-washed/soaked the yarn and/or used a mordant? I very much like the finished effect but the yellow and orange seem to have disappeared.

    • @spindletreestudiovideos
      @spindletreestudiovideos 11 днів тому

      Good questions! I don't think a mordant works with procion dyes, unless you mean the soda ash. I could be wrong though. I did use soda ash. I think maybe washing it before soaking in the sofa ash and maybe adding a bit more soda ash powder during the dyeing. I could have also used more dye powder. It was much stronger last time. I don't think I washed it first then, but I did add more soda ash powder and I dyed it just in the muck, possibly with more dye powder 🤔

      Oh thank you, that's very kind of you ☺️ I am really pleased with how the colours came out. I'm releasing a second yarn dyeing video soon where the same dyes look very different! Great idea with the needle books. I did think about making journals from the fabric. The only thing is, if you only use small pieces, you can't see all the weft colours. I'm thinking on a future warp I might weave thinner weft stripes so you can see all the colours when using the fabric for smaller scale items. With this I thought a lamp shade, but it looks nicer when the light is not going through it 😂 my other thought is to use it to cover open shelves like I have in the background of this video, but elsewhere in the house. I'll definitely add needle books to my list of future projects though! My Mum makes fabric page journals for embroidery sampling and that would be great to go with a needle book!

    Which type of wool is best for a beginner to use for warp which would be strong enough to take the pressure?

    • @spindletreestudiovideos
      @spindletreestudiovideos Місяць тому

      That is a very good question! I think it partly depends what kind of loom you have (rigid heddles you don't have to worry as much about a textured yarn getting caught in the heddles). If you use a single ply (not wrapped with another yarn as in 2,3 or 4 ply) the finished fabric can be more uneven once washed (though you might like that). Superwash wool is often used for knitting, but it doesn't 'full' or mesh together during wet finishing. I think it's also worth considering what you want to use it for as some wool can be itchy. Strength wise you can give it a pull and see how easily it snaps, but I thought some of mine were only suitable for weft and my friend said they'd be okay. There are other differences between weaving wool and knitting wool, I haven't quite got my head around those yet. I'll ask my friend who is much more experienced if there is anything else to bear in mind. I know she very much likes Shetland wool.

    May I offer a suggestion about body mechanics as you are weaving? When you send the shuttle, it’s OK to send it. You don’t need to hand it to the other hand. So that when you take the shuttle out, you continue it in a straight line and don’t pull it back towards you until it has cleared the warp. as your cell line gets closer to the beater, you’ll find yourself compacting the woven cloth at the edges and you’ll end up getting a curved fell line. I’ve also been advised to always be in a neutral shed or the next shed as you’ll end up with less draw in with a neutral shed, and it will stay put better in the next shed, Weaver’s choice. I’m thrilled for your new weaving adventures, and I hope you have a blast.

    Your selvedges are getting really good! A tip when winding the cardboard pins or bobbins etc for on boat shuttles is to wind quite tightly to get a firm bundle and to leave an inch or so clear at each end, moving fractionally further towards the middle as you go, forming an ellipse. This prevents the yarn slipping off the edges and getting tangled.

      I’ve had the same problem with 1 of my shuttles but not the other so it wasn’t the actual winding in the cardboard bobbin. Hi Jane, thank you so much! ☺️ The fabric isn't dyed. I should probably have made that clearer. You could try soaking the reed in a tub and pour coke cola over the area and let it sit for a while that'll help to soften the rust then rinse it and get some yarn that isn't precious and weave a practise piece it'll rub the rust off and you can then wash the piece you made. I know you're a young person so you're probably still working, but if you get time, find your local spinner and weavers guild, you should be able to join for a nominal fee and get lessons at a reduced rate, and they may have other stuff like yarn etc a bit cheaper, just a thought you enjoy your explorations of the weaving craft, oh and maybe your loom was a proto type for a particular loom that the maker was testing so it could be quite old, its lovely it still works. There's an Australian Weaver who did classes on line, and prices were reasonable and she also does UA-cam videos on using the rigid headle loom. I have a few different looms so that I can do different types of weaving, the online workshops would be good you'll probably be able to work on them in your own time, which may fit in better with your working/family time. 😆😆I probably made it sound like everything was dripping wet, no its just the air is damp and I guess it has to settle somewhere, if you lived in a tropical area you'd have the same problem with the humidity, I tend to keep the reeds I'm not using wrapped up, I know a lady who stores hers in a box and covers it with rice!
