    i have to disagree as squirrels are the worst pest of the garden, they will destroy and eat everything

    • @younggroundgrows
      @younggroundgrows 2 дні тому

      I appreciate squirrels are a pain - I'm sorry you have to deal with them - I get issues with rats regularly with my hotbeds and in my polytunnel eating my grapes! But yes, squirrels are hard to protect against. Other than maybe putting rat proofing mesh around and on top of crops or growing inside a patioed greenhouse.

      @@younggroundgrows they like getting into the fruit trees then picking the unripe fruit and tossing them to the ground, they will strip every single tree before the fruit even has a chance to ripen, they will destroy the sunflower before they even bloom, the damage never end. there worse then the evil groundhogs.

    Great tips! I’m going to try these in my garden this year. I hadn’t even thought of the slug eggs in cold compost! Thank you for mentioning the harm that slug pellets do to wildlife too - I’ve seen the effects of these pellets on hedgehogs and it’s devastating.

    • @younggroundgrows
      @younggroundgrows 3 дні тому

      I'm so glad you found it helpful. Nematodes are really successful if you can afford the 3 applications and you get them down about a week or so before planting. Growing plants on until they're nice and big seems to discourage the worst of the munchers! Yes, I've been horrified to see a whole flock of crows eating pellets thinking they were slugs. Never again! And that stuff doesn't just affect one species but the entire ecosystem. At least nematodes are naturally occurring. The slugs will already be contending with them and the birds, frogs, hedgehogs, and slow worms!

      For badgers and foxes, grow precious crops higher! Hotbeds work wonderfully for this reason when they're cooked down into compost - because they're that bit off the ground. Grew amazing untouched sweetcorn and watermelons in them 😊 the badgers did go for my parsnip seedlings though - they just love the rich wormy soil!

    Brambles have runner roots, which is even worse than tap roots because it means it doesn't stay where the plant was originally planted and you have to chase it all through the garden and paths 😅 I'm currently digging up bramble roots from my garden beds. I couldn't keep on top of the maintenance, and I hadn't expected that they'd get through my incredibly dense clay and sprawl further than just the slightly raised garden beds with friable compost and soil. Amateur gardener error, but we all live and learn. I'm determined to win the battle to get them out completely and stop them coming back, but it's slow going and exhausting to dig through sun-baked clay 😅

    I tried a hotbed this year and it far exceeded my expectations. I planted it with greens in mid February and in a months time I was harvesting. A small 4' x 4' bed has provided us with all the leafy greens we can eat for 4 months before my regular garden is ready.

    I am clearing brambles from Christmas trees I use shears and loppers , then rake them out twist the rake then tip straight into a large wheelbarrow a strimmer is no good because the brambles grow through the branches twisting this way and that so the brambles have to be cut carefully to avoid damage to the trees .

  • @davegill7614
    @davegill7614 9 місяців тому

    Mulching blabe on a strimmer...smash through all that...tiller the soil will rip the roots up..or a reciprocating saw round the root...will pop right out...save all the back breaking work 😊

    • @la196
      @la196 9 місяців тому

      Yes, I've been using a reciprocating saw with a 12 inch Diablo pruning blade which has made this job a lot easier. Been helping to remove huge overgrown bramble that's not been touched in 20+ yrs in new property. I've been starting by cutting at the base leaving about 6 inch of height. Which removes 95% of the risk of getting poked. The 12 inch blade easily plunges into soil angling it inward toward the plant. Work at it from 4 sides and many times you can pull the root ball right out. Any remaining stubborn roots just get after it again with the reciprocating saw. The real stubborn ones I learned after going around the perimeter I also go through the top of the plant right down through the root ball with the saw like a "tick" tack, toe" grid, which helps to section it's relenting grip in the ground. All of these little extra steps have been helping to ease the pain of this job as posed to digging it out from the beginning. It's all a lot of work that is gratifying once you clear your area and move on to the next:) This might help someone:) No matter what, you'll be working, tough on the lower back:)

    A lot of people don’t know that you don’t need heaps of compost on your garden beds what you need to do is make a highly fungal compost the way to do that is look up Johnson su bioreactor easiest way to make compost then when your done gardening for the year you clean your beds add a diverse cover crop add a thin layer of your fungal compost what that’s going to do is keep living roots in your soil holding your soil in place the roots of the divers cover crop with feed the fungi and bacteria keeping them alive and fed, in the spring 3weeks before you plant you cut your cover crops down leave all the biomass on the beds that will drastically reduce your weed and will slowly decompose feeding your bacteria and fungi the only way to build soil is to keep a living root in the ground at all times the thin layer of compost which will excite the roots giving you a thick mat of roots when they decompose that’s food for your fungi and worms if you just add heaps of compost the soil fungi and bacteria will eat your compost down to nothing then you have to add more best thing you can do for your garden is start adding cover crops and not just one type you need a diverse cover crop to get the best results

    Once dug out cover the ground with weed barrier for at least the summer season, the pull up turn the ground over rake off any roots, plant spuds this clears and cleans the ground up, other wise another method, but more slowly, cut end of bramble about to take another root, put into container filled with creosote, cover from rain, this goes baback to the root and kills it, if growing veg on this ground do not for at least a year or so, I did say its a slower method,

My kales are surviving and we have eaten some of them (specifically the Taunton Deane and Daubenton's perennial ones which I find reliable. The annual ones look a bit like yours! We have only just finished last year's potatoes-they did us for 7 months. I have sown a lot of cover crops for over this winter, so I am looking forward to seeing if they improve the soil.
