Great tips! I’m going to try these in my garden this year. I hadn’t even thought of the slug eggs in cold compost! Thank you for mentioning the harm that slug pellets do to wildlife too - I’ve seen the effects of these pellets on hedgehogs and it’s devastating.
I'm so glad you found it helpful. Nematodes are really successful if you can afford the 3 applications and you get them down about a week or so before planting. Growing plants on until they're nice and big seems to discourage the worst of the munchers! Yes, I've been horrified to see a whole flock of crows eating pellets thinking they were slugs. Never again! And that stuff doesn't just affect one species but the entire ecosystem. At least nematodes are naturally occurring. The slugs will already be contending with them and the birds, frogs, hedgehogs, and slow worms!
Great tips. Would love if you had any advise to help protect against foxes/badgers. I love the wildlife but heartbreaking to have all the growing effort lost :'(
For badgers and foxes, grow precious crops higher! Hotbeds work wonderfully for this reason when they're cooked down into compost - because they're that bit off the ground. Grew amazing untouched sweetcorn and watermelons in them 😊 the badgers did go for my parsnip seedlings though - they just love the rich wormy soil!
I appreciate squirrels are a pain - I'm sorry you have to deal with them - I get issues with rats regularly with my hotbeds and in my polytunnel eating my grapes! But yes, squirrels are hard to protect against. Other than maybe putting rat proofing mesh around and on top of crops or growing inside a patioed greenhouse.
@@younggroundgrows they like getting into the fruit trees then picking the unripe fruit and tossing them to the ground, they will strip every single tree before the fruit even has a chance to ripen, they will destroy the sunflower before they even bloom, the damage never end. there worse then the evil groundhogs.
Some great tips 😊 👍
Thank you so much! I'm really hoping I can spread the word about nematodes especially, as a lot of people still don't know about them 😮

Our biggest pest are pheasants we have to net and cover everything
Oh wow! We don't get many around where i am but do they do what pigeons do a potter around pecking leaves??
i have to disagree as squirrels are the worst pest of the garden, they will destroy and eat everything
