    I think TMNT Tournament Fighter for the SNES was the first fighting game with a super move power meter. I'm aware of Art of Fighting, but the power bar there was used for more than super moves.

    Actually, the first fighting game was Heavyweight Champ, relesead by Sega back in 1976 and the first 3D fighting game wasn't Virtua Fighter. It was 4D Sports Boxing, released 2 years before Virtua Fighter.

    Depending on how inclusive the definition of platformer, the first two player co-op would be Joust (1982) To my knowledge the first one to do head stomping is Hopper Robo (1983). I think it was also to use pipes for traversal, and the first to use springs to launch the player character. EDIT: it appears that Springer (1982) was the first to do head stomping. I, Robot (1984) is arguably the first 3d platformer. Alpha Waves is probably the first to do it free movement and camera, however.

    Great video. I would like to know too which was the first platformer to feature double jump, water mechanics/levels, gliding mechanics and powerups. They are all staples of the genre in my opinion.

    You forgot to mention mk is the first to introduce juggle mechanic, one of the most important mechanic in not only fighting game, but in gaming at a whole. It really hard to imagine how action game like dmc or gow, or fighting game like tekken, vf would be without it. This should be considered the greatest thing mk ever invented, not fatality, but somehow be ignored.

    • @pppp-by1bq
      @pppp-by1bq 2 місяці тому

      The influence of mortal kombat is completely irrelevant. DMC is a 3D action game that was influenced by Ocarina of Time and evolved from Capcom's fighting games and belt scrolling, and the Juggle was born from a bug in Onimusha. (Capcom's belt scrolling, like those of other companies, were influenced by Technos' Kunio-kun and Double Dragon.) By the way, kof`s staff were involved in the main motion part of dmc. Samurai Shodown staff also played a big role in God Hand. Capcom and SNK are both Osaka companies and had a great influence on each other.

    • @pppp-by1bq
      @pppp-by1bq 2 місяці тому

      And Virtua Fighter was not influenced by MK either. Virtua Fighter was created to compete with Street Fighter 2, and its motions were inspired by the manga Kenji, and it also applied the experience gained from Virtua Racing. At the time, Sega executives even went to Capcom to do a lot of research. After Virtua Fighter was completed, Capcom staff also went to Sega and were amazed at how well-made it was. By the way, Tekken was created by someone who moved from Sega's AM2 to Namco. Mortal Kombat has had little influence on other action games in terms of game mechanics.

    Surprised Asuka 120% Burning Fest didn’t come up at all. It’s credited as the: -first fighting games with the clash (where two attacks hitting at the same time cause neither parties to get damaged) -first anime fighting game (many mechanics would go on to be used in Guilty Gear and Blazblue and the franchise’s existence kinda even led to French Bread forming) -first (non nsfw) all female fighter (there were others that likely predated it as an all female fighting game but they were all strip games like Variable Geo or Metal & Lace. Speaking of Metal & Lace might actually be the first all female fighting game period.) Metal & Lace first released in 1992 for PC 98 Variable Geo in 1993 also for PC 98 Asuka 120% in 1994 for FM Towns Marty Also Virtua Fighter wasn’t the only Sega game with “Virtua” in the name to pioneer a fighting game genre funny enough. “Virtual On: Cyber Troopers” is arguably the first fully 3D Arena fighting game first released in arcades in 1996. Though you could make the argument that it’s more an Action Hack and Slash and/or FPS than a fighting game. Unlike Virtua Fighter, Battle Arena Toshinden and even Fighting Vipers, Virtual On allowed you free roam in any direction in a 3D space instead of the occasional angle change from a move.

    And yet only four long running franchises dominate the fighting game industry consistently throughout all these years - MK, SF, KOF (aka one company crossover franchise, that ever since became it's own thing...) and Tekken...the rest are long since playing catch up...franchises like DOA, VF, KI, SC, SS, Injustice and GG and multi-company crossover franchises like MvC or CvS all deserve their respective nods, but none are as iconic as MK, SF, KOF and Tekken!...just look at their respective reserve rosters grown over the years to include over 70 different characters at very least each (i think KOF is the most insane one in that department bringing it's grand total close to a hundred if not going over even!...) that says a lot about longevity and popularity of those four fighting game industry juggernauts! I remember back in the day franchises like Battle Arena Toshinden or Bloody Roar were a thing! Everyone thought they were going to become really huge and will last for many decades like MK, SF, KOF or Tekken, needless to say that didn't age very well as barely anyone talk about those two anymore, heck many don't even know what those are...but back in late 90's trust me - they were huge! Especially Bloody Roar!...Some of the honorable mentions - Cardinal Syn (not good, not bad, just average, but stands out for having very memorable aesthetics, has terrible controls though, which requires a lot and i really mean A LOT of getting used to...), War Gods (many say it's a bad MK clone, but i beg to differ! I had lots of fun with that game, so it's my personal guilty pleasure! The fatalities surely could and should have been way better and way more creative though...), Mace: Dark Age (Now this one is by far the best MK clone ever and the one i wish turned into an actual franchise, but it is what it is...) and finally Thrill Kill (which for it's time introduced quite innovative gameplay, which allowed more than two characters in the same arena to fight simultaneously at the same time each with their own health bar in a chaotic brawl! this last "man" standing mechanics are still pretty underused these days in versus style fighting games and was used by Thrill Kill masterfully, which is not an easy feat to achieve with that kind of mechanics!) Damn i feel so old, and i'm only 37...LOL
