    Superman and Lois and Stargirl were fantastic shows. I think the CW was in BIG trouble and we just did not know it. It came out it never made any money its entire life as a network. The people that bought it clearly were uninterested in superhero shows and wanted cheap profitable content. That is why they did not promote them as much as they should, because by that point they knew they were being sold and their old content was most likely dead, so why put money into marketing shows that will be cancelled anyway?

    • @FilmsProphet
      @FilmsProphet Місяць тому

      I think that may have definitely played a role but I also find it odd that the other shows were still getting marketing when this wasn't. Especially as, as we've seen with Superman and Lois, if they were able to pull viewership the cw would justify keeping it on. idk if we'll ever get a specific reason why they didn't try pushing it more but i suspect there were multiple factors in management that lead to this.

    Just now finding out that disney is the conglomerate behind the show… makes me revisit some scenes through a different lens. Thanks for including the scene of Lorraine criticizing the goofy hat from new jazz. Feels kinda meta, like Glover using paperboi to express his disappointment in himself for watering down his art/identity through pressured product placement, but with enough control to incorporate it as a theme. I can only imagine how the goof who sat by the door may explore/poke fun at that dynamic on a symbolic level. Great job on this analysis by the way, really helps me to appreciate the show on a deeper level. You a real 1 for this 1, well done 👏

    • @FilmsProphet

      Thank you so much for this comment! And thank you for focusing on the disney element of it, because i didn't even actively think of it! One thing I really appreciate about this channel is the way it opens discussion with others and adds layers I didn't see myself. So, you pointing this out makes me look at it with yet another lense! Especially as FX wasn't Disney owned during the first two seasons of Atlanta, and the last 2 are when we really see a stronger acknowledgement of Disney.

    This is the best analysis of Atlanta I’ve seen. It’s true that this show is a masterpiece based on its exploration of capitalist system and its impact on 4 black people creating different arguments and perspectives of how one must live in the world of capitalism or battle to create an identity outside of it. The characters names are ‘priceless’..(pardon the pun) ‘paper boi’ and ‘earn’…I even think it’s interesting to explore white earn who committed suicide when he no longer had capital. I’ve seen others explore other themes like the Afro-surrealism which is definitely a vehicle used to communicate how surreal it can feel to navigate this capitalist world black people did not created by those privileged with delusion. But Afro surrealism is only the style they chose to express this system of capitalism we ALL must endure, overcome, and battle to find our TRUE SELVES AND VALUE. Again great job on this video script and analysis. I wonder your thoughts on ‘DAVE’.

      thank you so much for this beautiful comment. the most rewarding part of making these videos is getting to engage with thought provoking comments like this one. i think you're absolutely right when discussing the use of afro-surrealism in the show. it truly allows Glover & co to illustrate the absurd nature of the capitalist world we live in, especially for peoples who were not given power in shaping this world's political-economic identity. as you said, this affects us all and it truly feels surreal for all, even though the how can vary. i love the pun!!! i have not watched Dave yet but i have heard great things and do hope to look into it!

    I just realized. Barry is desperately longing for a normal life, while Sally is the opposite , not wanting to settle for anything but stardom for most of the show. In the end she goes with him to run away from the failure ( in her eyes, could have had a great paying job afterall) she doesn't want to live with.

      agreed!! it is a very interesting contrast within the relationship and really illustrates why they fundamentally cant work.

    This may seem like a strange suggestion but I've just finished watching The Devil's Plan on Netflix and it got me hooked all through. I feel like it suceeded in the reality game show genre and did things so much better than others do. This one stood out to me because I usually can't stand those shows but this one I loved. Maybe give it a watch and see if you can find the words to explain what makes it so different. What they did right.

      i havent spoken about reality shows here because of the nature of the channel, but i LOVE them. i will binge entire shows in one sitting. ill definitely check it out

    This was a great video. Awesome job. I loved this show. I was 19 going on 20 when it first came out and I was already terrified of working a regular job the rest of my life. I could relate to all these characters on so many levels. Such a shame that HBO cancelled this masterpiece. I mean, here we are almost 11 years after it’s last episode and it’s still talked about frequently.

      i think the fact that 11 years later there are people still relating to it really shows how timeless the show can be despite being so decidedly in its era. glad it could mean so much to so many and im glad it can bond people the way it can 🙏

    The early perspective on Al and Earn has one glaring error here: Al isn't financially stable from his music, he's financially stable because he sells weed. This is a conversation they have in the episode where Earn is trying to make money, as well as a plot point in the episode where Al gets robbed by his weed distributor. His relationship with capitalism isn't that it's working for him, it's that he's making it work by going outside the law.

      I'm sorry I have to ask, what does that change? He is still reliant on capitalism, it doesn't matter if it's legal or not the problem is still the same.

      @@FilmsProphet My dude you still did a good job, this "error" doesn't add or subtract from the overall message of the video. This is more of a smug "um actually" or a nit-pick. His addition would not make or break your analysation of the series. Like I said great video.

    • @gjhodson39
      @gjhodson39 8 місяців тому

      It's not about legality, it's about where they start out in their relationship with capitalism. The essay says Al is financially comfortable from his music and specifically says he's not trying to make more money (around 7:30) and that Al wants Earn to prove he's in it for more than money, neither of which fits their story arcs. Al wants more money, he just doesn't want to get ripped off. Al wants Earn to prove that he will center Al's financial interest and has the skills to do so; Earn's anxiety of the whole second season is that once PaperBoy starts to blow up, no one is sure whether Earn has what it takes to elevate Al's business further until the scene at airport security proves to Al that he does. I agree with the analysis beyond that point -- nobody's over here saying it was a bad video -- but it can affect how you read both characters' story arcs if you miss where they start from.

      @venomkratos7358 thank you so much for the support but please dont worry the comment was overall quite respectful. I put over 40h into a video like this one, theres bound to be a mistake here or there even if I try my best to not make any. Though i do not think it makes such a big difference that it delegitimizes anything, considering the starting point i was trying to establish was that Al's needs are being met, while Earn's needs are not, as well as the fact that Al does not know if he can trust his cousin, i do think @gjhodson39 's remark adds something i missed: Al was already trying to be self sufficient outside of what is considered "acceptable". His needs and devices are still established by the system but he does not fall quite in line with what is considered to be a "good worker". The overall stance I have from what is being established through this changes but not in a way that changes the overarching point of the essay. Al still has his needs met in a way that he certainly wants more, but he is comfortable enough to not jump at an opportunity for more if he cant trust it. Either way, he doesnt feel the need for substantially more. I've had to deal with nitpickers on previous essays, especially some who are wrong in their nitpick, and I didnt consider this comment to be that. To me it was a mistake worth pointing out and it added to the discussion. Thank you again though for the act of good will. It means a lot.
