100% agree with your take on “fixing mistakes”..I don’t hesitate to take things back and feel much better in the end.
Yes! 🙌 You’ll enjoy whatever it is you’re making so much more if you go back and make changes when you see they need to happen.
Beautiful work! I live just outside Moncton NB and happy to see that you use a lot of Briggs and Little as well.
Hi neighbour!👋 It really is such a good yarn. My favourite socks are made with B&L.
I’d love to hear more about the techniques you tried on your 2x2 rib for the Hipster Hat!
Ooh yes! I usually do all my purls twisted to make ribbing in the round neater, but for this project I needed both sides to look the same since you flip it up to have the wrong side showing. I ended up going down a needle size, doing combination knitting in the round (Andrea Mowry has a good tutorial for this), paying closer attention to the angles that I do my knits and purls (have the needles perpendicular for knits and as parallel as possible for purls), and the one that made the most difference was having a smaller needle on the left side (right side if you’re a left-handed knitter)! I think I did a whole mm size less on the left side and it really tightened up the stitches and made them much more even.
Just come across you, thank you algorithm! Great video, subscribed straight away. You’re knits are gorgeous. I’ve had the sweater no 18 in my favourites for ages, seeing yours has convinced me I need to cast it on.
Thank you so much! Sweater No. 18 is such a cozy sweater and it’s pretty fun to knit with the texture happening all throughout it!
Love your knitting journey in 2024-thanks for sharing-amazing!
Thank you! It was a really fun year for me ☺️ 🧶
One of the issues with Arctic light might be lack of short rows, not only the yarn
Oh yes, I forgot that there aren’t any short rows in that pattern. That could definitely be contributing to the issues!
@@adriannamakes I frogged the whole yoke and I'm trying to figure out how to incorporate short rows in the chart.
Oh wow! That’s a huge project. I don’t think I’d be able to figure that out with all the cabling. Good luck!
Oh I absolutely LOVE your colour choice and fit on the sweater 18!!!
Thank you so much! ☺️
what techniques do you use to get your flat 2x2 ribbing to be neater? I'm making the Eun Sweater by NovemberKnits and it's got a really big 2x2 rib panel that I just can't seem to get as neat and even as my 2x2 in the round :(
Oh yeah that sweater has sooooo much ribbing! I was having more issues with my ribbing in the round but for the flat ribbing I used flat combination knitting (Andrea Mowry has a good tutorial for this) and also really paid attention to the angles that I did my knit and purl stitches at. I tried to get my knits to be done with the needles perpendicular to each other and I tried to get my purls to be done with the needles almost parallel to each other. Also going down a needle size helped with my flat ribbing! And of course blocking helped even things out. Good luck with your project and hopefully you can get your ribbing to look like how you want it!! 🤞
Happy new year from London,ON
Happy new year to a fellow Canadian! 🍁 I actually grew up a couple hours away from London ☺️
Me and my husbond are going to visit Canada about july 25. I would love to by some canadien Yarn during our visit. Can you recommended any brand ? In Denmark we have yarnshop selling only yarn. It is the same in Canada ?
Exciting! Where in Canada are you visiting? If it’s a bigger city, there will most likely be yarn shops for you to check out. Briggs & Little is a beloved Canadian yarn brand that I would recommend keeping your eye out for. They’re the oldest woolen mill in Canada and they use wool from Canadian sheep. Their yarns are quite rustic but so durable and you’ll be able to find them probably wherever you visit in Canada! There are lots of other Canadian yarn brands but most of them would be more localized to specific areas. I hope you enjoy your trip! 🍁
@ thanks a lot. I will be looking for Briggs & Little 👍🤩 Our trip is “Canada East and West, which means that we visit a lot around Toronto , Ottawa and Montreal and then fly to Vancouver and Calgary. Our trip is 17 days . I think I vil fall asleep knitting every evening 😆
Oh wow you’re getting to all the major cities here! You definitely won’t have a problem finding yarn shops in those places ☺️ You will visit Banff when you’re in Calgary right? It’s one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been to 😍
@@adriannamakes yes - I just lokkede at the travel plan and we are also visiting Banff 🤩
Jealous! You’re going to love it! 🏔️
Soak the socks in a solution of hydrogen peroxide baking powder and hot water 50 50 it might work
Thanks for the tip - I’ll try this!
If you can find a block of sunlight soap, yellow in color, it is wonderful for stains.
Ooh I will keep my eye out for this. Thank you!
Watching while I knit my Sweater No.18 after I saw yours😊 Love these red Christmassocks❤
No way that’s so cool! What colour did you choose for your Sweater No. 18? And isn’t that red the perfect Christmas red?!
Perfekt Christmas red❤ My Sweater is in a rusty red colour (hey Mama Wolf mokosh in Henna Red & pascuali manada in sahara). Love all the greens but wanted something different..
I love rusty red colours 😍 It’s going to be a beautiful sweater!
Oh I've favorited your cinema sweater on Raverly! Didn't even realize it was you 😁❤
No way! Small world ☺️ Have you made a Cinema Sweater yet?!
I am really enjoying this! Watching while I knit my mom a sweater. I'm just a couple minutes in but I have to tell you something kind of funny. I'm a Canadian too, from Manitoba, and I moved to Ohio in 2021. I was so surprised to find out that people here don't use the word touque, most of them haven't even heard the word before! They call them beanies! I like touque better personally. When I think of beanies I think of those old 90s crocheted hemp skull cap type things. You're probably too young to have seen them, but it's like exactly what the kids who played hackey sack at school would wear. I'm a kid of the 90s lol! Anyway I just subscribed! Happy New Year 🎉
Thank you ☺️ And thanks for sharing that story! Wow it really must be a Canadian word then hey? That’s totally what I think of when I hear the word “beanie” too 🙈😂 Also, that is quite the move you made! I was living in Sask before moving east and even though the winters are a “wet cold” instead of a “dry cold” here, I don’t miss those looooong prairie winters 🥶 What sweater are you knitting for your mom? I’ve only knit sweaters for myself and my kids so far but I’d like to try making some for other family members this year.
@adriannamakes I definitely don't miss 8 months of winter lol! Yes I moved here to marry my American husband. Ohio is BEAUTIFUL 😍 I've actually never been to the Canadian East Coast, do you like it there? I'm making my mom the Salcombe Sweater by Cheryl Mokhtari, then I'll be making my sister the Afra Sweater by Irene Lin! I'm actually more of a crocheter, but my 2025 goal is to level up my knitting skills because I do love knitting. So this is only the second sweater I've ever made! Wish me luck 😊 Your knits are beautiful, I'm sure the people you gift them to will cherish them forever 🙂
Congratulations on your marriage! 🎉 I’ve never been to Ohio but I’ve heard it’s beautiful 😍 Oh yes we love living out here! It still often feels like we’re on vacation when we drive somewhere. Such a beautiful part of Canada! Ooh I just looked up the Salcombe Sweater - I love how thick the stripes are! And I’ve been really drawn to Irene Lin’s designs lately. The Afra Sweater is so pretty with its balloon sleeves 😍 Good luck with your knitting goal this year! Have you seen those patterns that incorporate knitting and crocheting in the same piece? Sounds like something you could do since you have the skills for both!
I love your energy and project choices. Great episode, thank you! 🤎
Thank you so much! ☺️
For yarn management on that sweater - Is it possible for you to do your collar, cuffs and hem ribbing all in one color and the rest of the sweater in the other?
That’s the other option I was thinking of! I’m not sure I have enough of one colour to do the body and sleeves though… and I’m not sure how I would figure that out without trial and error 🙈
Okay I just weighed all the yarn in the lighter colour (the one I have the most of) and I have enough to knit 65% of the sweater with it. If I do the collar, cuffs, and hem in the darker colour and crop it, I think I will have enough to do what you suggested! I could also make the ribbing parts longer if I run out of the lighter yarn before it gets to the lengths I want. Thanks for making me rethink this option!
@@adriannamakes Perfect! Fingers crossed it works out for you. I think you could totally just do the ribbing longer if you run out and it would still suit the pattern, and the collar ribbing looks like it takes a lot of yarn too!
I completely agree! This is much nicer than trying use 3 different strands at the same time 🙈
Hello! I just randomly found you tonight and clicked on your video because I have seen the Hermione everyday socks before and was interested. Then I realized you are from the East Coast of Canada, which I also am (NB). Subscribed immediately ;). Off to watch a few more of your videos.
Hi neighbour!👋 I’m in NS ☺️ Have you visited the Briggs & Little mill? It’s on my list for next time we’re in NB!
@@adriannamakes Yes! I run the Metal Studio at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design. A couple of years ago we took a mix of Craft students (Metal, Ceramic, Textiles) on a tour of shops in the province and got to tour the Briggs and Little fibre mill. It was a very cool look into the process.
That is so cool! And what a neat job you have!
Good tip for making a more rounded heel. I have been using the provisional cast on and making one foot a smidge shorter. I agree the type of yarn makes all the difference. I’ve knit several pair and had a hard time felting two pair, ended up giving to size 8 grandsons instead of size 5 1/2 daughter. I’ve used a kitchen sink plunger and hot water, but still took several washes. I used Leithen Netherlands Voluma that I found in a thrift store and they almost felted too much in the first wash. They are still a favourite with the recipients, so worth it.
Crazy how some wool just doesn’t want to felt! Makes me think I could be too precious with my other knits that I don’t want to felt 🤔 It really is a nice pattern and such a good gift idea!
Finally a video on knitting including children ❤, love your channel, accent and how you explain .xxx
Thank you so much! I wasn't sure if people would appreciate discussions on children's knits as well as adult's so this is very encouraging ☺️
What yarn are you using for the felt slippers? …..edit…..I didn’t wait to watch long enough to hear what it was.😂
I just about forgot to mention it 😂 This yarn just really doesn't want to felt but with each wash it's slowly but surely getting there!
I do see a mottled look. Maybe not stripes per se but I do see the color difference. But it looks like it could be one skein of yarn and its made that way. Dunno.
That's what I'm seeing too. As long as it doesn't look like distinct stripes I'm okay with it!
I agree that I see no striping on your swatch but if you’re worried you can alternate skeins every row in the flat by using the same technique one uses for two colour brioche in the flat and just knit one row and then push the knitting back to the other side and knitting the row from the same side but with the other yarn. So you knit two right side rows and then two wrong side rows to create stockinette if that makes sense? I know there are videos showing how to do it which are definitely better than I am at explaining it 😅 Hope that helps in any way and good luck, I think it will look stunning!
Ooh yes I like this idea! And I totally get it from your explanation - thank you! Do you think this method would work while doing short rows or should I just stick to using 1 skein for the short rows and then start alternating after?
Do you have a top load washer? I have found that items don’t felt well in my front load machine vs my old top load washer, I believe there’s less agitation. If you know someone with a top loader, maybe they’ll let you try felting the slippers. I’ve also found Briggs and Little yarn very difficult to felt. Happy New Year!
I do have a top load washer but it was actually through trying to felt these slippers that I discovered the agitator was broken and not actually cleaning any of our clothes 😵💫 long story short I have a working top load washing machine again and slowly but surely the slippers are getting there. Which of the Briggs & Little yarns have you tried felting? I thought maybe it was just their Atlantic line that was difficult but maybe it’s more. Maybe it’s from the breeds of sheep that make up their yarns?
Happy New Year to you too! 🎉
@@adriannamakesI tried felting regal and Atlantic, both were difficult to felt, I guess that's what makes it a tough yarn.
Another happy Canadian! Yay!! Love the slippers and socks! I’ve got the wool now that I need to knit the Harlow sweater! Can’t wait to get started on it. Happy New Year!
Another happy Canadian! Yay!! Love the slippers and socks! I’ve got the wool now that I need to knit the Harlow sweater! Can’t wait to get started on it. Happy New Year!
Those Double Slippers are so cool! 🧶 Your uncle did a great job on your bowl. 👏🏾
Isn’t it so pretty 😍 And yeah the pattern is a really cool one. The end result must be super warm since it’s two layers of felted wool!
I see no striping whatsoever. It’s gonna be a great sweater
I’m crossing my fingers that it’ll blend nicely once I really get going on it!
Hi, please make tutorial arctic light sweater knitting in details.
I added a link in the description to Kutovakika's tutorial for the Arctic Light Sweater. It helped me a lot when I made mine!
Thank you.
I can't find perfect tutorial from beginning.
Hi, great. Can you share arctic light sweater schemes?
What lovely projects! Is the sweater you’re wearing also a handknit sweater? I would be so interested in this pattern if it happens to be a handknit garment ☺️🩷
It is! It’s the Cinema Sweater by Veronika Lindberg (Kutovakika). It’s really cozy!
@ Oh nice! Did you use a bouclee yarn??😍
I used Drops Flora (wool and alpaca blend) and Drops Brushed Alpaca Silk held together. The brushed alpaca is what’s really making it look fluffy!
@ Uhhh, i love the flora!!😍
It was really nice to work with! And they have so many colour options 😍
Hello from out west! I’m in British Columbia. Enjoyed this video. I too love wool. The first wool you showed, that is local, where did you buy it from? I’d like to look into it 🙂
I bought it at a market nearby. I know she sells on Etsy under the name “Old School Fibre Farm” and there’s a yarn store in Halifax called Fia Fia that sells her yarn as well! It really is quite nice yarn 🐑
@ ohhhhh thank you!
Harlow Sweater V Neck is so cozy and beautiful! Will be watching your progress 🥰
Thank you! I’m excited to start it ☺️
These are awesome plans. I really like the Sweater No. 20. 🧶
Me too! The more I look at it the more I think I’m going to prioritize it instead of the cardigan 🙈
Oh man, I can’t plan ahead that far in advance. But, I’d like to knit myself a fun jumper from this amazing green wool I thrifted, and I’m currently working on 3 pairs of socks, one for each of my daughters and we all wear the same size, and I’m finishing up a pair for me. I’ve got two sweaters on the needles, a shawl, a pair of arm warmers for my daughter too. Everytime I try to tidy my yarn corner I end up casting on something else. 😊
It sounds like you’ve got enough to keep you busy for a while! Are the socks for you and your daughters all the same so you match or different?
Great choices for winter! Look forward to seeing more …..
Thank you! Winter knitting is the best. So cozy!
Great job on your Cinema Sweater. 👏🏾The Sibling Sweaters and felted Double Slippers are adorable! 🧶🧶🧶
Thank you! ☺️
I really like the Calorimetry headband. 🧶
Thank you! Definitely a pattern I’ll be making again ☺️
Thanks for the help with the H Problem 😅 Love the headband ❤
Thank you ☺️ And I hope those tips can help you - that H problem is so frustrating!
I recent made the sibing sweater for my son in a very similar green and a beige. Have cast on a maroon/burgundy version for y daughter. Needless to say I love the colors you chose! 😊
Oh my goodness we’re totally on the same wavelength!! They really are nice colour combinations ☺️
I hate the algorithm for not showing me your video before❤You are lovely!! And your plans are brilliant, looking forward to seeing them come to life😊
You are so sweet, thank you so much! ☺️
Oooh look at that! It's finally done 😍😍 well done! Its beautiful! I can see why you'd want to use it yourself first haha :D Love the detail for the crocheted "sewing" section :D
Merja! So good to hear from you! I’ve been wondering where you’ve been - stalked your UA-cam page a few times this past week hoping you’d post something 🙈 But yes, finally done 🙌 It was quite the project!
@@adriannamakes hahah oh you are too sweet 😂😍 oh I can imagine! How long did it take you, you said you started with it when you took up knitting, was that 2 years ago or so? Maybe I’ve asked before and I think you said you didn’t but do you use instagram? If so, I’d like to connect with you there 🤗 but if not it’s okay! Are you using something else where we could connect? It’s a bit tricky to do that here in the comment sections 😂 I’ve have started to study so that’s why I’ve been gone for a while but I am planning on getting something out very soon :) (I’ve been saying that for moths now 😂). I hope you are all well and that you are having a nice fall season 🤗😍
Yes, it took about 2 years! I’m not on Instagram buuuuut I’ve been thinking of making a knitting one 🤔When I do I’ll find you there! Wow good luck with studying! What are you studying? I can imagine you must be busy with that these days.
For the ribbing, I've been knitting for only a year and I've never had any issue with uneven ribbing UNLESS I used the same needle size as the body and a cable that's too flush with the circonference of the project, collar cuff or hem. You have to go down a needle size (or more) than the rest of the body AND you have to use a cable of a shorter circonference than the project, collar cuff or hem. (Ex: for cuffs I use an 8" cable, instead of the 14" that I used for the arm). The rib stitches will be more close together and won't pull and look uneven. If it's not that, I believe it might be the angle with which you insert your needles while wrapping the yarn. I think you might be changing the angle on each stitch without noticing. I ALWAYS hold my needles on a 90° angle (perpendicular) on a knit, and then I hold it horizontally on a purl. The most important part is that I always keep those angles the same, which results in even stitches. The way the knit and purl cross each other is consistent. Try to notice the angles with which you naturally knit and purl, and then keep those angles consistent. Barring any other tension issues, I'm pretty sure that's the key 🙂
Thanks so much for taking the time to help me 🤗 I hadn’t paid attention to the angles before but after reading your comment I tried it out on some 2x2 ribbing and really noticed a difference! And with the Hipster Hat, I ended up trying it again on magic loop instead of stretching the stitches around a cable and having the stitches close together made a big difference too! Thanks again ☺️
No, it works in the round. Your right hand needle determines the gauge.
Cool! I will definitely try this out!
Have you ever tried to use 1 size smaller left hand needle? It could help with your rowing out.
Oh interesting! This would only work for flat knitting, not in the round knitting though, right?
Watch Andrea Mowry’s tutorial on Combination Knitting! She explains why our ribbing looks a little wonky and gives us a solution. It’s working for me!
Such a good technique! It’s helped me with other projects but doesn’t seem to be helping now. Although I might try the hipster hat again on 3.5mm needles with combination knitting on magic loop so the stitches are nice and close together all the time instead of stretched out around the cord. Might help 🤷♀️
Our hand knit ribbing will never look like a machine made product and I think that’s part of the appeal for me. I love your green sweater no 18 - it’s perfect!!
So true - thanks for the reminder! And thank you, I’m very happy with how it turned out ☺️
Maybe the problem with the ribbing is related to the twist of the yarn? But you would see the twisting in stockinette as well, so I'm unsure.
Yes, that definitely is a factor! I’ve had it both where if the twist of the yarn is too tight and also too loose (and now that I’m thinking of it, it’s probably also the direction of the twist!) it makes the one leg of knit stitches totally straight.
I think that the problem with uneven ribbing is actually the first purl after a knit has extra yarn between the stitches because it's travelling from back to front between the stitches to purl. That extra yarn travels into the knit stitch before it and makes the edge of it looser. There are probably some tutorials available on youtube for improving your ribbing, I know mine got neater over time but I'm not sure exactly what I do, maybe tug a bit to tighten the first purl?
Yes I think that’s exactly the problem! The little bit of extra yarn in between the last knit and first purl. I’ve tried a couple different techniques for lessening that bit of slack and some techniques have worked with some projects but not with others. I think I might just be overthinking it too because I looked back at previous projects with ribbing and don’t notice any big issues with it 🙈
Love your sweater n°18! 😍
Thank you! I’m so happy with how it turned out ☺️
I'm currently knitting a porcelain sweater with a rust colour. Not finished but I can send you pictures as it is now. :) The design looks gorgeous with the colour!
Oh that’s going to be gorgeous 😍 I guess it would look similar to her Terracotta Sweater sample photos right? Except with the Porcelain’s colourwork. Such a beautiful colour combination!
