After Retiring from Photography due to a Stroke in December 2018 I have had to undertake some massive changes in lifestyle and relearn some of the things I take for granted every day.
It’s been a long journey back but after five years I am getting there.
I closed my UA-cam channel after my stroke and thought I would never start another one.
But now two years later I decided to restart my channel from Scratch.
I won't be making as many videos but will aim to start building the channel slowly over the next few years.
My new Chanel will focus more on my journey back in to street photography, hopefully I will have time to make some interesting films as well as talk about trips and adventures in the future.
I might even talk about some of my favorite kit.
You can find my blog here matthewhartphotography.wordpress.com/
I am also still on Instagram @matthartstreet @matthart6t6

Join me on a Walk with Jake on the Blair Atholl Estate past hang man’s hill and a folly !
Join me on a 6.9 Mile walk with Jake, where I will share some of my thoughts and take a couple of photos with my Phone.
I thought I would just try a few ideas for UA-cam whilst we are away and yesterdays shorts Idea was complete waste of my time and effort !
So hopefully this walk with a couple of photos will be a bit more interesting.
Let me know what you think in the comments.
The folly and hang man’s hill will be in the Shorts !
I will try and make a couple more whilst we are here !

Photography Projects Part 3 ( last part)
As a photographer who started in 1987 on the practica TL 1000 fully manual camera and learn the craft later on Minolta film cameras and had the pleasure of shooting on Kodachrome 64, Fuji chrome and Agfachrome, where you shot the 36 frames on the roll put the roll into a small paper envelope put a stamp on it and wrote your address and put that into a postbox and waited for the images to return in a small oblong plastic box and then sat and held them up to the light in your bedroom witnessing the beauty of green and blues deep black deep red and light that was made up of pure magic. I was there at rise of digital photography and smart phone photography and I completely agree with you that immediate gratification laziness and bowing to the constraint of time has turned photography from an honourable art which needs an apprenticeship knowledge and muscle memory built over time to what it has become now the press of the button conjured from the cold dispassionate bowels of Ai. I was in Lancaster earlier this year and it warmed my heart to see a street photographer with a medium format camera taking street portraits. It was an absolute pleasure to know that the craft is still there is still alive and like vinyl hi-fi systems cassette tapes there is still a yearning for simpler times.
Thanks for watching, I was just looking at some prints a friend did from MF Camera in Black and White and Colour and the depth of colour and the detail in both prints is still superior to Digital ! It’s all quite astonishing how we have all gone down the easy digital path just because it’s easy but it’s no where near better !
@@MattHart I must confess to owning a digital camera, a Fuji xt2,it’s a way of affording to remain in the craft. I am saving towards a yashicamat 124g as a necessary indulgence.
Things our lords and masters got up to😂
I know ! Sneaky buggers lol
They would've been hugely expensive to run and maintain. People wanted and were buying cars.
Interesting
Sorry I've not been here lately, been doing so much overtime in work, I need to spend a while going through your videos. Is that squirrel woods in Formby that you're at? I'm trying to get out this weekend to do some macro, hopefully I can find some nice bugs and mushrooms
Welcome back! No it’s the trail at Blair Castle. We are in Speyside area now for a while.
@MattHart ah ok, I didn't realise you was still up in Scotland, I hope you're having a wonderful time. squirrel woods may be a good walk for you, although you may have to put your dog on a lead to walk around there (I think that's the rule so the squirrels don't get scared). I used to go when I was a kid with my family and there are loads of red squirrels roaming about.
@@Dixon-Photography unfortunately there are not many at Formby these days I think lots died out of some disease a few years back. Not sure if they have recovered as yet. Plenty up here.
@MattHart oh no, what a shame, I didn't realise that, used to be such an amazing place see them too. I was actually talking about it to my wife a couple weeks back and mentioned about going with my camera next time I'm up there
@@Dixon-Photographygive it a Google they might have recovered by now.
Greetings from Ireland Matt.. ive been an amateur photographer since early 1970s. Shooting 35mm film with my Canon EOS 650 - then digital arrived on the scene and I traded all my canon gear including a bunch of lenses for my first digital camera Olympus 2020Z and a the time it was £900 (Irish Pounds) a lot of dosh back then.. moved along the years with digital Canon 40d -- then when the Fuji X-Pro 1 came out I had to have it.. loved that camera until the XT-1 came out .. and then the XT2- and the XH-1 as I wanted IBIS for my old Pentax Tacumars .. but strangely I keep my XT-1 and its my go to and only Digital camera -- tempted to get back to XH-1 - but ? With regards too iPhones - I like my Mini 13 BUT that form factor smaller size has been discontinued by apple - so that phone will stay with me until its no longer usable -- thanks Apple but the 15 and 16 models just dont work for me --- apple rant over -- best of luck in your retirement and kinda regards, Paul
The Fujifilm cameras I have at the moment are XPro2, X100F and XT30 in all honesty if my name was not on the Serial numbers on the Pro2 and X100 I would have upgraded them to the latest versions mainly for the tilting screen and would not have the XT30 but in the long run because they are personalised it’s saved me a fortune ! As for iPhones I use mine to shoot all my UA-cam videos and take photos every day so this October will update to the iPhone 16 ProMax I will be able to trade my 14 ProMax in and buy the 16 for roughly half price with the trade in so it’s no brainer. I love the bigger phones as I put them in QuadLock cases and use them for photography, GPS, Mapping and all the other internet stuff and most of my editing unless it’s really complicated I then move to my iPad. I think Apple do take the piss but it will be interesting the iPhone 16 price as the 15 flopped! So if they want sales they will have to price it right. Thanks for watching and sharing.
@@MattHart Thanks for the reply Matt - I maybe tempted to upgrade to Iphone 16 next year .. depends on the deal - my mini 13 suits my needs for now -- might consider XH-1 as it has IBIS for my vintage lenses .. and yes I am a big supporter of MPB - peace of mind buying and keeps the circular economy healthy -- regards, Paul
For street my X- pro 1 with a 23mm lens. For my all around camear my Nikon z5 with 24-70 mm lens
Good choices
Good video matt.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it.
Where is this?
It’s in the description ! Blair Atholl estate.
@@MattHartapologies and thank you
@@itchy_gooch7933 no worries it’s behind Blair Castle on the estate ! Guess the Estate must have Hung their own staff !
What year , and who got hung ?
Quite a few people I expect it’s in the Description. You can probably google the history from that.
Nothing is wasted Matt, maybe not your favourites, but 18 minutes of shorts is work and 'we' appreciate it!
I won’t be doing that again though that’s for sure lol
What a nice video I really enjoyed this one
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for watching! Just a few thoughts whilst I walk. Just about to put out a short on the folly !
Absolutely beautiful views. Something id love to do . Unfortunately my disability doesn't allow .but watching theses bring a smile to my face .👍👍
Sorry you can’t do these trails. Glad you enjoy watching us do them it makes me want to do more ! I will however shoot them and edit them differently next time that was hard work.
Nice job
Cheers
Actual photographers who know this art have changed with the introduction of digital cameras in lieu of film which makes us real photographers scarce.
Yep
Nice to be outside should be less people about soon
We can only hope!
Good honest video Matt, i know what you are going through. I also hav my share of medical issues and i wish you the best of health. Have a great holliday and take loads of photos.

I like parks, nature reserves. Anywhere with trees, not too many people. I need to organise a trip to Scotland or Ireland for landscapes. Skye is brilliant if you like coloured mountains.
Anywhere with no people is bliss !
Sound advise sir.
Amazing how many people you see out in the hills with nothing these days ! Scary stuff.
Have a good time in Scotland.
Sure will buddy
Brilliant keep it up, unique and informative
Thanks, will do!
I hope you can get the treatment quickly, Matt. I'm deeply touched by your courage, and the realism that underpins it. I pray for your healed condition, and for you. You're so giving and you offer so much. Though I'm one of your (paltry) supporters, I haven't taken enough time to learn more from you. But oh how I want to, in the coming months and years.
(from Gary)
Cheers Gary
Great to see you, Matt! It's been a while. And glad to hear the developments in your health are being taken seriously. I would have made the same decision. Wise words indeed. If you find yourself just north of Glasgow in the near future then let me know... I'll get the kettle on and we can swap idiopathic stroke symptoms and 9V battery brain tingles till the cows come home. Best wishes, David.
Cheers buddy, hope all is good with you. I keep meaning to message you but the down side to short term memory issues is I forget !!
Glad to hear you are doing OK have a good trip I agree photography helps me a lot let's me turn off all the other stuff in life for a few hours all the best
Yes it’s a great escape from reality and the stresses and strains of life. Cheers
Wishing you all the best Matt, whatever you decide. Enjoy Scotland and get on top of this when you get back. Totally agree that Photography is Great for your Mental Health, been through it myself, not a Stroke but quite a few other issues, as for what your partner goes through I really have no ide how they do it, they’re all heroes in my eyes
Exactly she has had to learn to live with a new version of me and probably a worse less fun version ! I think they get the shit end of the stick for sure !
Best wishes Matt.. good luck for the future
Cheers buddy
Glad to hear you can still get away on your trip. Enjoy, and we need to catch up soon 👍🏼
We definitely do buddy ! Yes I need my Scotland trip this year more than ever !
Hope they get you sorted out, my wife had the same durung the pandemic, a piece came off her blocked cartoid, hers was found to be 90 percent blocked and had to have a piece replaced, she lost her speech due to it but it has mostly returned, her sense of humour is not the same either and she has lost a bit of confidence and also has stroke anxiety, it was tough times for us with me not being able to visit her in hospital and communicating over the phone when she couldn't speak properly, She still at 72 goes out to work 3 part days a week doing care in the community because it gives her something to do, i still work at 67 on building sites 4 days a week for the same reason so she says she won't fully retire till i do, i make sure we live life to the full with holidays, weekends away and days out because of her stroke as i thought i had lost her
It’s life changing for sure. Anxiety confidence and so many other issues ! I walk 5+ miles a day and my girlfriend took early retirement to help in my recovery at the time. We are always busy and that’s the way to be. It’s always a shock when these big medical issues affect you and your family. Lockdown was a pain in the arse. My Mum died during lockdown so the Funeral was limited numbers. Live life day by day but live it to the full. We only get one life ! Cheers
Bloody hell Matt, I hope all goes well.
I will put out updated video today
Wishing you the best whatever the decision Matt. I'm sure there are many others out here on your side.
Cheers find out tomorrow now !
Stay away from non-animal based foods, vegetable oils, seed oils and ultry-processed foods human beings are ment to eat meat, fish, eggs, milk, cheese and anything that comes from animals and these are fat and protein rich and they have all the nutrients you need to be healthy this is the carnivore lifestyle and it has worked miracles for thousands of people with health issus the mainstream doctors and hospital give the wrong advice like have a high carbohydrate diet wich can be the biggest contribution to becoming obese and or diabetic and getting heart disease and attacks and strokes it's the carbohydrates seed and veg oil and the suger that are the biggest things causing these and many many other chronic diseases. Checkout Anthony Chaffee MD on UA-cam and Ken Berry on UA-cam and there are many other carnivore experts on UA-cam its free and very well worth checking them out what's there to loose especially when our health is our real wealth because with out health we have nothing. I wish you all the very very best and I wish you a healthier long future MAY GOD BLESS YOU 👍
I never thought about Street musicians not liking to be photographed. But it makes sense, they’re technically working.
It’s worse when you are teaching and the group you are with all crowd around someone ! It’s stops people being able to drop a £1 in the pot so you cut off their revenue!
That does sound awful Matt, the positive side is that it's been found and you know what to expect from it. It's a hit and miss situation, get the surgery and come out better (abeit with a chance of having a stroke or death whilst under) or don't have it and risk having another stroke further down the line. I really do feel for you and your wife because God knows what she must be going through too with all this. I will continue to wish and pray for your health my friend 🙏
She has been through hell to be honest. My last stroke changed my personality so she had to get used to living with someone new ! Strokes are life changing for the whole family for sure. Cheers
In last 90s was a massive movement of every man & his dog was buying DSLR brand battle was Nikon & Canon. I couldn't afford then. Looked a both brands looked at Flicker and liked the Colours of most Canons. Didn't think that most of the photos on there have been colour corrected! Like the menu on Canon.
Cool, lots of people chose canon for for Landscape Photography
@@MattHart 😂 My Canon can take photos of other things then just Camura Landscape Photography.
@@SonofChurchill Lol
I was always with Canon, but I found that it was getting too heavy, so Sarah at Cambrian Photo suggested I try a Fujifilm XE-1 & try it on one off your walks! So now Fujifilm all the time.
@@BarrieMee I think weight is a huge issue in changing brands and Canon and Nikon were slow to change to Mirrorless and it cost them a few very loyal customers.
Fujifilm for me because of light weight, no faffing with menus, everything mostly on top plate, lenses etc. They look darn sexy.. strangely I'm not fussed by their film sims or recipes.
Good idea
@@JoeBrown-b7w Great for really Sunny days as well ;)
Hi Matt, I have only just come across your channel, brilliant !! It’s refreshing to watch someone who calls it as it is. I took up photography again when I retired and my leaving present was a Canon dslr. I have bought some kit from MPB and have been really pleased with it. I use an iPad Pro 12.9 and use a keyboard from ESR which is half the price of the apple product. I am looking forward to going through your videos, keep up the good work.
@@johndickenson8506 cheers, thanks for watching. Thanks for taking the time to make a comment as well.
I changed to a wrist strap years ago and I prefer it to anything else now.
I’m complicated lol I like to shoot my X100 from my neck strap but my others by hand so switch from neck to wrist.
Any old cheap neckstrap that's easily removed for when I fancy using a wriststrap (when I'm using a small and light setup).
