“Why why IQ?” - circuit bent Speak and Spell + DIY “King Tubby” Filter…
Circuit bent Speak and Spell (loop-function, speed/pitch, glitch) into DIY King Tubby Inductor filter, looped and then to delay pedals.
Just playing around. Feel free to use sounds, sample etc.
More information on glitch/bendpoints of the Speak and Spell (listing 4 different versions of the main board):

The secret of the passive-filter is the inductors. Here's the first test of just the inductors (and one capacitor).
ua-cam.com/video/VmGu8COb88k/v-deo.html
I had the inductors values and asked Chat GPT for capacitor values. They can also be calculated with e.g. online calculators, e.g. I didn't trust the AI but it turned out allright! :)

It's a passive second order high pass filter, L-C type (inductor-capacitor): • The celector center switch changes capacitors and connects more and more of the inductors in series. • The toggle switch changes which (inductor or capacitor) goes to earth and out respectively; making it either highpass or lowpass. • Resistors compensate for volume loss per frequency and for “Flat”. Pitch bend in the Speak and Spell can be made just connecting different pins on the board via a 1.0 Mohm potentiometer. This is the version I used: experimentalistsanonymous.com/diy/Schematics/Circuit%20Bending%20and%20Modifications/TI%20Speak%20and%20Spell%203.jpg

      Thank you so much. The secret was the enormous inductors. a total of almost 7-8 H. I got the inductors from a friend who collected electronic surplus and rare components for a long time. Apparently the larger ones originally were custom made for a very early voice synthesis experiment at a University. Here's a first test of just the inductors. ua-cam.com/video/VmGu8COb88k/v-deo.html

Experimenting like this often has me starting with way too much headroom (might be needed for the feedbacks), I wished UA-cam added Normalizing processing for audio -- especially since e.g. Instgram has had similar contrast boosting functions for ages… but you’re absolutely correct. It's based entirely on 741's LDR's and lighbulbs, it's Haible's board (more on his development here) jhaible.com/legacy/compact_clone/ As far as I've been able to compare the circuit designs the phasing parts is identical. elektrotanya.com/schulte_compact_phasing_a.pdf/download.html However, I haven't seen what's inside the remote to the Shulte - and the knob I added was for "Manual" (I also added an input for Expression pedal, e.g. av regular volume pedal (just takes the light of the bulbs up and down manually instead of by built in LFO). Here's how it sounds when this Expression input is controlled - via Vactrol (LED to LDR) by the trig out from a drum machine (that was more interesting than just an envelope follower) ua-cam.com/video/B2v5CDmOsLA/v-deo.html

    • @jacobsteel
      @jacobsteel 5 місяців тому

      Setup via an external mixer. One channel has the sine input, sending to the Nagra III via send 1. The Nagra III is in REC, recording via the Mic. input from external mixer send 1. A second channel on the external mixer takes Nagra audio from headphones, feedback controlled via send 1. Hope this makes it clearer. :) The proof of concept above was mainly "does the tape mechanism pull hard enough to pull a tape via an extra loop". It's a Nagra III, best machine for tape loops: it did. <3 NOTE: I tried to just loop it in the Nagra but it that didn't work. Most of the times external mixers give better feedback control anyway (even when working with regular delay pedals, you can add a limiter in the feedback loop and have much more control etc etc).
