Custom Built Temple Cycles | Crafting a dream bike for myself
Remember two years ago year I built a custom Temple Cycles for Wen. I enjoyed the process of building the wheels and learning the whole anatomy of a bike when I attempted to put all the components together. I couldn't stop staring at it now! It has been serving her so well through her commute everyday and all our little adventures the past years.
Last summer, I got in touch with Temple Cycles for another custom build and this time for is for myself! I had been riding on my old touring bike by Ridgeback for the past 12 years since I got it back in 2012 and it has come a long way! I longed for a minimalist adventure bike with disc brakes so the Temple's Adventure Disc was a good place to start!
I had the vision to pursuing the silver components with a hint of brass and brown/orange note which kinda makes it stand out a little. I am lucky to be able to source these quirky parts from my favourite retailer in Cambridge, Freshtripe. The end result is a robust, minimal flat bar modern steel bike that had been making me smile for the past 3 months and for a long time to come. I hope you enjoy the rest of the build video that I have put together. Enjoy!

Bikepacking in Cornwall 24' | Treen - Porthleven - Falmouth

Earlier this summer (August), we packed our Temple bikes and took the train down to Penzance in the late afternoon to embark on a 5 days 4 nights bikepacking trip in southern Cornwall. After a 4-hour train ride from Bristol, we set off from Newlyn towards Treen where we tried our luck for a spot at the campsite and we were lucky enough having showed up on two wheels. The little gem - Pedn Vound...

Last September, there was a rare window of high temperature and we decided to go for an impromptu overnight bikepacking trip in Cornwall. We set off without a tent in our cargo, hoping to find a wild spot to bivvy by the end of the day. After a 2-hour train ride from Bristol, we set off from Liskeard towards south where we discovered many quirky coastal towns including Looe and Fowey. Having sa...
Installing Honjo Mudguards | It was harder than I expected!

Since Wen's bike build last year, many of you had commented that it is missing a pair of fenders for the rainy days. Rest assured, I did manage to install one during late summer last year before the arrival of British wet autumn! It became a tad sophisticated as I went all out sourcing a very raw set of Honjo mudguards that came un-drilled (no holes), stays no pre-formed and no installation man...
Her First Bikepacking Adventure - Wild Camping at Dartmoor

I have longed to bring Wen on a bikepacking trip where we would camp in the wild. It was Wen's new bike first time out on a long-haul trip and we were excited to see how 'she' performed on the hills of Dartmoor. We managed to make the most of the 3x9 gear range for the absurd amount of hill climb and descent during this trip. Two years ago, I bike-packed along the south coast of UK where I disc...

Wen had longed for a bike that she can trust, a bike that can do it all, a companion on the road that can last a lifetime. So, I set out to build her dream bike from scratch, which I have not done before. Last Christmas, I bought a frameset from a local bike brand in Bristol (Temple Cycles), having admired their elegant and minimal design since they started back in 2014. I sourced the bike part...

Back in Summer 2022, Wen and I rented a Campervan from the Quirky Campers website for a short getaway towards Monmouthshire. 4 days, 3 nights as we spent the first two nights near the Wyncliff Quarry where we sport climbed. We went for a (5-6 hours) walk at the Symonds Yat Rock (Highmeadow Trail), got a little lost which was fun whilst descending some sketchy hill. It was my birthday week too a...

A microadventure with Wen from Bristol to Bath and onwards to Frome where we camped for the night. We arrived at the 'Camping in Nature at Veg Valley', which was beautiful! The campsite is raw as it can be, equipped with composting toilets, bucket for cold shower, fireplace and nature! The Bristol and Bath railway path is a very picturesque and chill ride! I highly recommend if you wish to expl...

We went for a short getaway to a fishing village off the coast of Malaysia, where they are known for their dried shrimp 虾米 and life on the island. My friend, Ming who lived in the Netherlands invited me to join a 13 km Spartan/Viking Run in April. Our highlight is the water slide! An experience not to forget! (Viking Run at Nijmegen, Netherlands)

      Yo Robin, the basket is Wald 137. They do even larger basket Wald 139 I believe. The basket bag is made from Wizard Works based in London and it is called the Alakazam, which comes with the two Wald basket sizes. Pretty cute setup! I have them on every single day and it is well seasoned 😇

      Hey, it is an interesting idea which I may consider if it's local project. The challenge for me would be the logistic of shipping a pre-assembled bike internationally and I may not be in a good position to be able to execute it. Temple Cycles have that figured with theirs so it may be worth shop from their website perhaps? 😊

      Yo! 🙂 Hope you didn't have too much of a tough time on your Honjo installation. I was so stressed out with the hole placement and stays bend. haha The rear rack is 'Pelago Commuter Rear Rack' - Stainless Steel version. A tad heavy but can take a ton of weight for commuting and touring!

    What a lovely bike you have there (your last bike was also nice) Are you self taught? You’ve done a great job on the build. I’m surprised that you use a multitool for the assembly, with the budget for the bike I would have thought you’d treat yourself to some workshop tools. But hey, if it does the job you’ve proved we don’t all need a mechanic’s workshop. We’ll done sir 👏❤

    • @tadwenture
      @tadwenture 10 днів тому

      Cheers, David! 🤗Yea I was self-taught for this build, mainly by watching tutorial videos from Park Tool's channel, especially the wheel build session! Perhaps my background in engineering and having built one for Wen two years ago gave me a bit of confidence too, knowing that I can still fire fight if I ever screw up. 🤭 And the multitool...I know right?! I don't know how I managed to pull it off without losing my patience haha....maybe I will treat myself with a proper set if I were to do another build in the future. 👍

    • @tadwenture
      @tadwenture 10 днів тому

      I learnt about this type of housing clip from my previous build video when someone totally despise cable ties and strongly suggested me to use the C-clips. I got these C-clips from Jagwire and so far they hold the cable housing very snug and doesn't come off. I'm a big fan of them now although they are on the expensive side, but you pay for what you get I supposed :) I'm spoiled this time 😅

      Hey Lee, I am 178cm tall and had built this with the Large frameset (57cm), whilst considering a swept back flat handlebar at the time. The seat tube at this size did catch me out though, with the top tube merely meeting my groin whilst I am standing. Otherwise I should have gone for the Medium size, which seems to be the recommended size based on my height. :)
