Hi, editor Wingman from the future down here. As this series of videos is my first go at creating long form, heavily documented content, I frankly, sucked at the start of it. These first few episodes where I didn't really know what I was doing, wasn't comfortable on camera, and didn't know what kind of shots I needed... Suck. Turned it up to 17psi for one lap during practice. Unfortunately the Mazda 6spd transmission popped 4th gear off first timed lap later in the day, and day 2 the boost was turned down to wastegate on a replacement 5spd before I hit the wall at T7 and ended the weekend. Much, much more pace available, easy sub 1:30, possible 1:25 with some Hoosiers and a few more practice laps at this power level...

Spreading the ARP lube on the outside of the head nuts without doing the threads where its needed seems a major error.
@@v6pulsar studs got lube, just didn't film applying lube to 10 studs.
1000 hp, for how long? Removing the under piston oil coolers was an error. They are of sufficient benefit that considerable effort is afforded for fitting then to engines that don't have them as standard equipment. We have had people trying their very best to destroy out B16 units by force feeding then to 800 whp, pistons haven't melted, but the head gets so hot the valve guides have moved with a 3-4 thou interference fit. 2 thou is sufficient on a lightly boosted unit IE up to 1bar. Hardly anyone has ever giveen the full story in 47 years, when they have a problem😂 Good luck, 500 is enough in a MX5 and too much in the wet, even in the dry it's not hard to be facing where you came from, even with Avon's latest rubber which overheats after 2 laps of most circuits🙂
Came here to comment this, removing the squirters while doing an endurance build is a real mistake.
hillclimb isn't endurance. There's alost of really short hillclimb events that feel more like autocross up a hill.
Be careful about getting your thread lubricant on the bottom of your washers. Spinning your washer with the nut can cause all kinds of problems with your torque reading, and can get very expensive if you don’t pay attention.
Good video buddy i gonna subscribe for
I just found this video/your channel and I dig it (I have a NB2 with a rotrex). I'm getting heavy Turbo Tom personality vibes. Keep it up!
Man, i saw a review or two on this car a year or so ago ... thought it was rad , live how raw you hot it and how diy it is .... i daily my forged boosted round 400hp na miata , and it can be sketchy some times , but always fun ... but man, my brotha 1000hp in the miata chassis ... i am deff eager to see the end results .. I hope ya stay safe, brotha , because this is gonna be an epic and rad ride, fam ... peace and love, brotha, keep it rad stay safe , and build on ... l8r famz and keep having fun ✌🏽
@@mastercricket7626 Full disclaimer, motor's built to handle around ~900whp, but I only plan to run it around the 600whp mark(or wherever my turbo maxes out at). I'm already gonna have enough traction issues at that power level...
@wingman703 Right on , epic build regardless broski 👌🏽, hope it's everything you want it to be, bro .. 🤘🏽🤙🏽✌🏽

My dread was realised upon viewing... at least I had time to mentally prepare. The end of the video showed us hope though so back to excited! Not to say your motor had this happen, but Ive seen a few project cars go boom from "run away boost" for whatever silly reason - Boost controller malfunction, CO2 for boost control empty, wrong decimal point, etc... and Ive always wondered if we can engineer in a "burst disk" type thing. Put a T piece on intercooler piping with a disk on it that WILL rupture and let the pressure out if it raises above a certain point, i.e. 30PSI. Yes, might be a pain to change every now and then, but easy and cheap compared to an entire engine. They use it in all sorts of critical pressure applications like pressure cylinders and reactors etc, surely it can be done here.
@@Omeshan motor definitely went boom from too much boost, but not from an overboost. It hit the targets I requested, those targets were just to aggressive for the 3 season deep junkyard stock engine to handle. Runaway boost on a gas engine sounds absurd, any halfway decent ECU will allow you to set a maximum boost level, and above that it kills fuel and spark. No fuel+spark, no combustion, no turbo spool, no boost.
@@wingman703 Ah well, heres to soon seeing all your targets met! I agree that boost safety in your ECU should be everything and all you need. Wondering if maybe they just put a big number as a target and after motor went boom, then the box of excuses came out? Anyway, we will never know, but we appreciate you. Seeing the ups and downs makes the story great. Will be awaiting the next high!
Great videos! What was your tuning error specifically?
@@williamchandler6151 Too much boost to quickly combined with overly aggressive TC methods.

Hey! Have you considered running reverse flow cooling with that EWP? You might need to use Earl's coolant to avoid steam pockets, but it should reduce your knock threshold by quite a bit and cool the motor even more efficiently.
@@Doomburger7 I have not heard of this, what's the benefit of running the system in reverse? Any sources or solid information as to?
@@wingman703 So, Reverse Flow Cooling is something that Smokey Yunick worked on and that Pontiac used in 1955-1960. GM also used it in the 2nd gen LT1/4 and I've seen it used in some pretty unsuspecting engines more recently (Mercedes, I believe). The mechanism seems to be that the cylinder head conducts most of the combustion chamber and exhaust heat and exchanges that heat with the incoming intake charge. In addition, the exhaust valves and cylinder head are two primary sources of hotspots in the combustion chamber, so giving the head priority cooling alleviates these effects and raises the knock threshold of the engine, enabling higher compression or boost and/or timing advance. I still don't know the effect that reversing the coolant flow has on the cylinder walls, but that seems to be less significant for performance and the few folks I've seen online who've ventured use it have reported that it works.
@@wingman703 YT seems to be deleting my comments with the links in for some reason, so I'll throw them in separately, but lmk if they don't come through.
@@wingman703 www.researchgate.net/publication/266604652_Effect_of_cooling_water_flow_direction_on_performance_of_an_acetylene_fuelled_HCCI_engine www.sae.org/publications/technical-papers/content/841294/ www.miataturbo.net/general-miata-chat-9/reverse-flow-electric-water-pump-cooling-system-35609/
@@Doomburger7 Links didn't work, but you've given me enough terms to research and look into. Thanks!
I think one of the principal ideas of racecar design is "what do you want to do and how long do you want to do it for" - Cooling is limiting for so much, so this is the exact approach I wanted to do as well. Its amazing how many things Ive thought of and planned for that youre just... doing. Youre a role model. Thank you.
@@Omeshan Me from the future here. This cooling setup kicked ass. I struggled to get it to operating temps even in 90° ambient temps untill I halved my already small radiator inlet. The EWP's insane flow definitely helped, but the extra large triple pass radiator itself does serious work.
@@wingman703 Is it you from the future, or the vid is you front the past? Hmm NVM future you is cooler! So you couldnt get up to operating temps even with PWM at lowest so had to put more backpressure on pump to reduce flow? Would you have done anything differently? Like smaller Rad or smaller pump, or do you need the capacity when at full tilt? Space is a premium, so just asking. Also, do the NA headlights take up space and get in the way? They cool as hell... but space!
@@Omeshan Haha video me is past me for sure. Basically to get it to operating temp I leave the pump completely off until ~140°F, then run it at minimum duty until 190°, and start ramping up in flow rate from there. Trying to run it at minimum duty from 80° or lower ment warmup took 30-45min at idle. When moving and with some load in it, warm up is much quicker. Getting it warm in the winter(40°F and below temps) is definitely going to be a struggle, but that's future me problems! Definitely wouldn't reduce radiator size. Having the extra cooling capacity is going to allow me to upsize my intercooler, which you might notice is very much on the small side. I'd much, much rather have too much cooling capacity and need to downsize/block off inlets then not have enough and have overheating issues again. Popup headlights could probably be made to fit, but that's just weight and aero drag!
@@wingman703 I wish i could show you how much i appreciate your detail in replies. One day if we find ourselves in the same place in the world, drinks are on me. Your R&D is definitely worth it! My build is aimed at somewhat time attack but also street legal. If i land up building it in Australia, its harder - I need to then use an NA because its old enough to do a subframe swap (Aus rules are a headache), but i would like to use the NB... but i may try something weird with front end swaps... Problem for later me to look at space and rules and stuff.
@@Omeshan Just happy to bring everyone along for the highs(and lows) of building a fast Miata.
Not sure about the heat close to the tires but I hope it works. Good luck and have a great racing days.
